Abstract:
"Easter in the Maramureş folklore Based on direct field investigations, our research is meant to investigate the repertoire rich in traditions, customs, beliefs and superstitions, most of which make up the pre-Christian background of this religious feast day. We dedicated the first part to the preparatory acts of this feast day, giving priority to important traditions and customs due to their age: ritual sweeping, ritual lamb sacrifice, the Holy Thursday custom “piezărit”, and then to broadly approach the eggs’ painting and decorating. Following the fusion of the repertoire of pre-Christian and Christian traditions, we dedicated due space to the use of red and decorated eggs in the feast day ceremony, and we also reserved an extended space for the traditions of using eggshells and egg-reddening legends. We have permanently paid attention to pre-Christian customs performed on this feast day, such as ritual fires, customs and traditions related to the cult of the dead. We have extensively approached the custom of the Easter forefathers, in the Land of Lăpuş, which is individualized as compared to other country areas by its novelty, complexity and ethnographic elements, at Easter taking place during two days. I have reviewed the rich repertoire of beliefs and superstitions and I have treated traditions related to premonitions and folk medicine. In our research, we have dedicated an extended space to customs and traditions that take place on the second day of this religious feast day, completing its rich pre-Christian background: girls’ watering, boys’ dance, but the emphasis falls on the custom of celebrating the most diligent housekeeper, the first one to plow, in the versions from Şurdeşti and Cufoaia, which include sequences with unique ceremonial acts and rituals. Abstract:
Consideration of ‘Urf by the Khulafla’ al Rashidun‘Urf (custom) and ‘adah (tradition) are very ancient and importantsomes of Islamic law. As the pre-Islamic Arabs had no written documentsor script, their social systems were regulated by custom and tradition.According to the available historical accounts, the khulafa' alrashidun retained many pre-Islamic social customs and traditions and alsoadopted and established some useful nonindigenous customs. Such borrowingwas quite acceptable in their eyes, for the Prophet himself hadacknowledged the validity of some pre-Islamic customs that were compatiblewith the letter and spirit of the revelation. At the time of the Prophet, the Arabian peninsula was the home ofmany different customs and traditions. The Arabs were mainly idol worshippets, and this outlook was reflected in their customs. However, theyhad also retained a pottion of the legacy of Ibrahim: ceremonies relatedto the Ka‘bah and circumcision. These ceremonies provided the basis forthe establishment of social traditions. Many pre-Islamic customs were still practiced during the period ofthe khulafa’ al rashidun. For instance, grain (i.e., wheat, barley) continuedto be regarded as kayli (measured by capacity) and gold and silverwere considered wazni (me asured by weight). The same custom andusage were followed in commercial transactions made by the Prophet andhis four immediate successors. The fuqaha’ later based many of the rulesconcerning zakah (poor due), sadaqah (charity), and kaffarah (expiation) ...

Matias, Lopez Carmen Maria. "Expressions cinématographiques de l'œuvre de Pedro Antonio de Alarcón y Ariza : représentations et anthropologie du Costumbrisme espagnol." Thesis, Artois, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017ARTO0003.

Full text
Abstract:
The beginning of the realism expressed in Spain in the form of costumbrism, from the Spanish “costumbre”; custom, habit, tradition, an artistic trend which pretends to make the work of art a reflection faithful to the customs and social uses of a country or region. Pedro Antonio de Alarcón (1833 - 1891) undoubtedly represents the transition from the costumbrism to the Spanish realism itself. El sombrero de tres picos, El capitán veneno, El niño de la bola, El clavo, La pródiga and El escándalo represent the best aspects of the style of Alarcón. In the history of cinema, the realization of adaptations of literary texts appears as a constant. Indeed, between the 1920s and the 1960s these six novels, the most popular of the writer, prove to be the most well-received filmic adaptations of the public. These novels tell stories imbued with symbols and fantasies on a realistic background. Throughout the narratives, characters, descriptions and language reveal the personality of the author, his thought, his ideology and his temperament. The atmosphere and the scenery of the work are those of his native city, Guadix. The novels of Alarcón seem to find their inspiration in real stories past, lived, read, or told in the childhood of the author. In his novels, the narrative keeps spellbound by its illustrated and picturesque suggestions. His works have inspired musicians, directors and even film directors. The object of the study is the comparative analysis of six films. The main objective of this work is the verification and observation of the various costumbrist and anthropological correspondences and the differences between the six films and the homologous novels. In the analytical study of four sequences in each of these film projections, it seems logical and necessary to consider the testimony of traditions and the historical context of the period in the romanticized stories and the respective films. This study seeks to investigate the various social codes, the various customs of the author's time as well as the traditional folklore and the visual spaces or realities of the writer's environment present in his works and for some of them still existing today. The political and social context of the post-war years and the Francoism encouraged the dissemination of conservative traditional, religious, educational, values through cinema, which influenced the favorable reception of films with moralizing objectives. The various interpretations evoked by the analysis try to address problems, in particular: Does the cinematographic production in any way respect the traditions and folklore suggested in the nineteenth-century novels? Can cinema serve as a corpus of testimony to anthropological and multicultural studies ?

Bui, Ngoc Thi Quynh. "Accomodating traditions of hospitality in a tourist region : the Mekong Delta, Vietnam." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2018. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/8593/.

Full text
Abstract:
While there has been a significant focus on how hospitality was commodified, commercialised and standardised in the literature, less attention is given to the extent of which local traditions and hospitality change and adapt to the demand of tourists. Through an empirically grounded investigation, this thesis at micro-level gives an insight to how local hospitality and traditions in Mekong Delta (Vietnam) transform in homestay practice under the pressure of tourism development. Normally, the local traditions and hospitality are offered by the host and experienced by the guests. However by focusing on contact zone, the settings and decoration of homestays, this thesis shows this mechanism in Mekong Delta is not one way but a dynamic process. The guests do not only passively receive but also have influences on what the hosts can offer. In fact, the homestay providers have capitalised on what tourists want to see. As consequence, local traditions and hospitality are changing and subject to re-invention to adapt to legal requirements, tourists demands, and social context. Ironically, tourists are using homestay believing they are experiencing true Vietnamese culture, while actually the local Vietnamese people are changing their traditional home styles and behaviour to accommodate the tourists.

Abstract:
This thesis explores Afro-Peruvian identity vis-à-vis national republican identity through visual representations of black Peruvian subjects in the late colonial and post-independence period (1750s – 1890s). Its foundations lie in a detailed analysis of these representations, primarily in bringing to the surface the historical articulation of post-independence representations with their late colonial precedents as an interweaving of cultural discourses. Focal points are Léonce Angrand’s (1808 – 1886) images from his time as French Vice-consul in Lima during the 1830s, and the works of German artist Johann Moritz Rugendas (1802 – 1858) during his travels in 1840s Peru. An analysis of the ‘popular’ characters and types featured in the watercolours of Peruvian mulato Francisco ‘Pancho’ Fierro (1807 – 1879) lies at the heart of this examination of 19th century images. They are the most prolific and renowned examples of Peruvian costumbrismo and constitute the most significant body of images discussed in the thesis. Photographs from the Courret Hermanos Studio provide a final source of images. My analysis of these visual discourses is complemented by a study of contemporary literary and non-fiction texts that include representations or descriptions of black culture. My findings lead me to argue for the existence of a visual tradition in the depiction of black subjects in Peru, particularly during the formative years after independence. This tradition is almost entirely related to Lima, where the largest communities of slaves, free blacks and black colonial castas were located. These findings open up new interpretative possibilities and means of exploring the symbolic centrality of blackness in the formation of a creole subjectivity and national identity in 19th century Peru.

Abstract:
This research paper investigates the Congada\'s connection with the city and with the social-cultural background of the people who are participating in this party. The paper focuses on identifying current human practices, which originated from customs and traditions that assisted the community in attaining crucial victories concerning their rights within the city, while also establishing the foundation for the community\'s current way of life. The research paper also highlights the organization of people within this event, the strategies used to execute the event, and the structural division of the party, so as to finally study the contents of the manifestations and demonstrations of the black community in Uberlândia-MG. The sources of information are organized in such a way that it permits the reader to understand the big picture before jumping into the smaller elements that constitute the Congada. First the paper explains how the congadeiros established the minimum conditions to live in the city. Then it describes the customs and traditions used by the congadeiros, while also analyzing the social differences and the inequalities faced by these people. It is necessary to comprehend their origins, in order to understand the daily reality of these people; their religious, political and social practices. The daily reality of these people can be observed from many angles. For example, the congadeiros of Uberlândia have included deals in their manifestations that when realized, allow the community, to occupy specific parts of the city. This paper also discusses the relation kept between the congadeiro and various other institutions that are involved with the group. The study of this relationship reveals the agreements, deals, disputes, arguments, and debates which occur between social groups and institutions regarding the usage of space. By observing the Congada from many different angles, it was possible to profoundly understand the current way of life of the congadeiro, his structures, inheritances, ideas, which continue to influence and transform the consciousness of people and the processes that redefine them in relation to the neighborhoods, to the places, to the social networks and to the city

The present study introduces the subject âEducation and maroon community: EJAâs relationship with customs and African traditions in the maroon Communities Ãfrica and Laranjituba in Moju/PAâ, conducted in the CaetÃâs Maroon Territory. Antonio Olintoâs work, Alma da Ãfrica trilogy, a literary text that introduces an Africa with its customs and traditions, political, human and cultural issues since the independence of the ancient colonies grounds the customs and African traditions. The main goal is to research if the EJAâs educative process considers the customs and African traditions of Larajituba and Ãfrica communities. EJAâs study starts during the process of industrialization and concentration at downtown, nearly 30âs, when the Brazilian system of education gets finally consolided. The first stage of the research was realized with a great bibliographical review, by examining written texts about the black people in Parà and EJA searching out about if the educative process really considers those customs and African traditions. The second stage adopted a Collaborative Research, developed in reunions with 28 participants, among teachers, students and parents, who acted in a mutual supportive, with shared goals and agreed by the group involved. The study concluded that in spite of the effort in provide a curricular proposal for EJA, realized by the Mojuâs department of education, with a specific methodology for those remaining maroons, thereâs still such a lot of efforts so that the educational process in the Laranjituba e Ãfrica maroon communities practice the specific methodology of the curricular proposal. The research brings a relevant contribution to the EJAâs guidelines of Mojuâs county, as well as to the Enhancement and Specialization courses offered by IFPA training that develops in the county of Moju.

Hanzi, Roselyn. "Sexual abuse and exploitation of the girl child through cultural practices in Zimbabwe: a human rights perspective." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/1214.

Full text
Abstract:
"In Zimbabwe the sexual abuse and exploitation of the girl child remains high. Recently the state has acknowledged the problem of sexual abuse and exploitation of the girl child and has indicated the willingness to step up campaigns against it. This campaign, however, targets school children in primary and secondary schools. There has also been an increase of sexual abuse of children in schools by the teachers and other staff members. The family as an institution has facilitated child abuse and exploitation in Zimbabwe through cultural practices and customs as a survival tactic. Some commentators have directly linked the revival of these cultural practices to the economic crisis that has resulted in food shortages around the country. These traditional practices include the marriages of the child to older men in exchange for food or money known as kuzvarira, kuripa ngozi, or pledging a girl into marriage and virginity testing. Some of the practices are, however, not directly linked to the prevailing economic crisis, but are just practiced as a tradition like chiramu. These practices have become more common amongst the Shona, the largest tribe constituting at least 76% of the population, and predominantly patriarchal. Theorists of patriarchy have directed their attention to the subordinate status of women and found their explanation in the male need to dominate the female. Although Zimbabwe as a state has shown a commitment to protecting children against sexual abuse by enactment of laws criminalising involvement of the girl child in prostitution, incest and rape of girls, little has been done to ensure that forced and early marriages of the girl child are curtailed. Virginity testing is not criminalised and is also currently being practised in rural parts of the country on a wide scale. ... Chapter one introduces the problem of child sexual abuse and exploitation of the girl child as a universal problem and gives a structure of the study. Chapter two discusses the concept of a child, sexual abuse and exploitation as a human rights problem. It analyses the protection of children under international human rights law. Chapter three gives a broad overview of the relationship between culture and children's rights. The role of the family will also be discussed as articulated in the human rights instruments. Chapter four highlights and discusses the cultural practices that result in sexual abuse and exploitation of the girl child in Zimbabwe. The legal framework protecting children from sexual abuse and exploitation and the shortcomings will be highlighted. The impact of such sexual abuse and exploitation on the overall development of the child will also be discussed. Chapter five makes recommendations by looking at the developments from other countries on the rights of the girl child and cultural practises that result in sexual abuse." -- Introduction.

Abstract:
Magister Philosophiae - MPhil
The Arabic language is a means by which the culture, beliefs and myths of Arabic speaking communities in the world can be understood. The ability to communicate, read and write in the Arabic language, can be used to research, read and write about the customs, traditions, folklore, habits, poetry, music, history and literature of the people where Arabic is considered the mother tongue The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (act 200 of 1993) states that 11 every person shall have the right to use the language and to participate in the cultural life of his or her choice" (p 16 (31)). The Constitution further states that " no person shall be unfairly discriminated against, directly or indirectly, and, without derogating from the The existence, respect and promotion of the Arabic language has been enshrined in the South African Constitution. Arabic is recognised as a language used by communities in South Africa even though it is mainly used for religious and ceremonial functions at this point in time. In 1993 I started teaching at Cravenby Secondary School, (Sub. A to Std. 10). During that year I did not teach the Arabic language. I, however, enquired from teachers regarding their teaching approach of the Arabic language. I also questioned the pupils about their opinion towards the language and the approach used by teachers. The overwhelming response by the pupils was that they had to learn the meaning of words in isolation and out of context.

Abstract:
Capital formation is crucial to increase output volume and quality in agricultural production activity of households. This study examines factors affecting capital formation of smallholder farmers in Kyrgyzstan ranging from household characteristics to location of farmers. Along with other traditional potential constraints that may have impact on capital formation, we examine the role of social network activities. These expenditures on customs and traditions may have both negative and positive effects on the capital formation in agriculture. Our empirical analysis is based on the cross-sectional household survey data for 2013. According to our findings, the amount of physical assets of households in Kyrgyzstan mainly depends on the share of expenses on customs and traditions, the total income, gender differences and the ethnicity of the head of household.

Abstract:
The most relevant and useful for today's Russia and its historical heritage is, first of all, the tradition of the organic unity of our peoples, which was developed and postponed in the course of our history as a result of everyday exercises in justice, mutual respect and harmony. Despite the fact that every Russian people has its own traditions, customs, languages, and heroic past – together they make up a common heritage. To revive it, to always remember it – and not lose sight of it – is the urgent task of time. We must believe that the troubled times, poverty and disenfranchisement of ordinary people-workers, disrespect for the moral and legal norms of human society are a temporary phenomenon. Its elimination consists in a good, comprehensive preparation of every young person entering an independent life. Our research has confirmed the assumption that in the conditions of today's acute ideological struggle for the minds and hearts of young people, it is necessary to turn to the her

Abstract:
Competitiveness, which is inextricably linked to the notion of competition, remains the aim pursued by companies and countries because everyone wants to outsource others and, over time, enjoy the benefits. A successfully competing community based by providing of services has more opportunities to attract and retain visitors, the same time implementing and meeting the needs of community members and ensuring community stability. With the rapid development of innovations and technologies, reveals the necessary to analyse the determinants of competitiveness. The competitiveness of the rural area is reflected by factors such as investment attractiveness, living conditions, attractiveness for the population, geographical location, heritage, culture, the fostering of customs and traditions. In order to assess the factors determining the competitiveness of rural communities, an investigation was organized. Methods chosen for the study: document analysis, SWOT and interviews.

Abstract:
The paper alludes to the study of how humans relocate themselves with cultural practice and its particular axiom, which embrace the meaning and value of how material and intellectual resource are embedded in culture. The study stimulates the cultural anthropology of the Bengali (Indo-Aryan, Eastern India) diaspora in Kerala (South India) that is dynamic and which keeps changing with the environment, keeping in mind a constant examination of group rituals, traditions, eating habits and communication. Languages are always in a state of flux, as are societies, and society contains customs and practices, beliefs, attitudes, way of life and the way people organize themselves as a group. The study scrutinizes the relationship between language and culture of Bengali people while fraternizing with Malayalee which encapsulates cultural knowledge and locates this in the interactions among members of varied cultural groups across time and space. This is influenced by that Bengali diasporic people change across generations owing to cultural gaps and remodeling of language and culture. The study investigates how a social group, having different cultural habits, manages time and space of a new and diverse sociopolitical situation. Moreover, it also investigates the language behaviour of the Bengali diaspora in Kerala by analyzing the linguistic features of Malayalam (Dravidian) spoken, such as how they express their cultural codes in different spatiotemporal conditions and their lexical choice in those situations.

Full text
Abstract:
A lack or limited availability for parking may have multiple consequences, not the least of which is driver frustration, congestion, and air pollution. However, there is a greater problem that is not widely recognized by the public, namely the negative effect on the use of transit systems due to insufficient parking spaces close to key transit stations. Automated parking management systems, which have been successfully deployed in several European and Japanese cities, can manage parking needs at transit stations more effectively than other alternatives. Numerous studies have confirmed that quick and convenient automobile access to park-and-ride lots can be essential to making public transit competitive with the automobile in suburban areas. Automated parking systems use a robotic platform that carries each vehicle to one of the locations in a custom designed structure. Each location is designed compactly so that considerably more vehicles can be parked in the automated garages than the traditional parking lots. Central to the design of these systems are three key technologies, namely: 1. Mechanical design and the operation of vehicle transfer, i.e., the robotic platform 2. Structural and architectural requirements to meet safety and earthquake standards, among other design imperatives, 3. Automation and intelligent control issues as related to the overall operation and system engineering. This article concerns the first technology, and more specifically the design of the robotic platform for vehicle transfers. We will outline the overall design of the robot and the shuttle, followed by a description of the prototype that was developed in our laboratories. Subsequently, performance related issues and scalability of the current design will be analyzed.

Abstract:
Public transit ridership in California declined in the five years before the pandemic of 2020–21 and dropped significantly further after the pandemic began. A sharp downward step in the level of transit boarding occurred after February 2020, and continues to the date of this report as a result of the public-health guidance on social distancing, expanded work-at-home, and a travel mode shift from public transit to private cars. A critical issue has come to the foreground of public transportation policy, namely, how to increase the quality and geographic reach of transit service to better serve the essential trips of mobility disadvantaged citizens who do not have access to private vehicle travel. The research focus of this report is an examination of the circumstances where fixed route bus route service could cost-effectively be replaced by on-demand microtransit, with equivalent overall zone-level efficiency and a higher quality of complete trip service. Research methods were reviews of documented agency experience, execution of simple simulations, and sketch-level analysis of 2019 performance reported in the National Transit Database. Available evidence is encouraging and suggestive, but not conclusive. The research found that substitutions of flexible microtransit for fixed route buses are already being piloted across the U.S., with promising performance results. The findings imply that action steps could be taken in California to expand and refine an emphasis on general purpose microtransit in corridors and zones with a relatively high fraction of potential travelers who are mobility disadvantaged, and where traditional bus routes are capturing fewer than 15 boardings per vehicle hour. To be sufficiently productive as fixed route replacements, microtransit service technologies in the same or larger zones need to be capable of achieving vehicle boardings of five per hour, a challenge worth addressing with technology applications. Delivery of microtransit service can be undertaken through contracts with a growing set of private sector firms, which are developing processes to merge general purpose customers with those now assigned to ADA-required paratransit and Medi-Cal-supported non-emergency medical transport.
