AbstractOne of the key roles of culture is to shape how human groups pursue personal and collective wellbeing, and thus each culture contains prescriptions and customs about how to achieve optimal functioning and wellbeing. This chapter identifies four fundamental differences in the conceptualizations of mental wellbeing across cultures. The identified differences are in the centrality of hedonic experience, self-enhancement, autonomy, and the relevance of contextual factors in determining wellbeing. These overlapping dynamics provide a framework for categorizing and making sense of existing cross-cultural findings on mental wellbeing. The chapter discusses the theoretical and empirical implications of the reviewed cross-cultural findings for international measurements of wellbeing. We argue that various measures of wellbeing may function differently in different global regions, with crucial implications for how countries are ranked based on wellbeing. Our review also highlights the relevance of cross-cultural variations in the concepts of wellbeing for designing interventions and policies and evaluating their effectiveness across cultures.

AbstractThis chapter explores the important question of whether, and under which conditions, children alternating between two distinct family dwellings can develop a sense of home that might nourish a sense of belonging to their sometimes, complex family configurations. We first present a theoretical framework to understand the various dimensions that influence children’s sense of home in shared custody arrangements, building on Hashemnezhad et al. (2013)’s work. We then show how this framework can be operationalized in quantitative research. For this purpose, we introduce the Sense of Home Instrument (SOHI), a new instrument for measuring the impact of material and behavioral-relational dimensions on teenagers’ sense of home at their mothers’ and fathers’. We then illustrate its relevance and value with supporting analyses of data collected through a survey conducted with Belgian adolescents aged between 11 and 18. In doing so, we propose new avenues for research on the consequences of divorce and separations for children’s identity construction and belonging, where the spatiality of family life is taken into-account.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the creation of the customs union to ensure free movement of goods within the European Union (EU), discusses the relevant provisions of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU). The chapter considers the significance of the common customs tariff applicable to all imported goods from outside the EU and explains the prohibition on customs duties and on discriminatory taxation. It also explains that the prohibition on discriminatory taxation serves to prevent Member States from circumventing the prohibition on customs duties by discriminating against imports via their internal taxation system. The chapter also highlights criticisms of the Court of Justice’s (CJ) approach to customs duties and measures having an equivalent effect.

Abstract:
The repayment and remission of customs duty and appeals against decisions of customs authorities are dealt with in different chapters of the UCC just as they were in the CCC. Repayment and remission is in the UCC Title III (‘Customs Debt and Guarantees’), Chapter 3, section 3 (‘Repayment and Remission’), which includes sections 116 to 123. The sections on decisions and appeals are in Title I (‘General Provisions’), Chapter 2 (‘Rights and Obligations of Persons with regard to the Customs Legislation’), section 3 (Articles 22 to 37) and section 6 (Articles 43 to 45). In the CCC, the relevant provisions were placed more closely together in Title VII, Chapter 5 and Title VIII. The reorganization of the UCC is intended to reflect the fact that the debt arises early in the commercial process. As repayment and remission is often a matter on which decisions and appeals are made, the provisions of the UCC relating to them are, very largely, dealt with together in this chapter.
