Abstract:
The cumulative sum (CUSUM) control chart is one of the most dominant statistical process control schemes. Despite its simplicity, its performance deteriorates when the actual mean shift is unknown. In this paper, we present an effective alternative approach called the CUSUM chart with local signal amplification (LSA-CUSUM) by amplifying or weakening local signals to improve the power of the traditional CUSUM chart in detecting an unknown mean shift over a range. Additionally, we introduce a measure for evaluating the efficiency of the LSA-CUSUM chart to detect a pre-specified mean shift range and describe a procedure to find an approximately optimal LSA-CUSUM chart over a mean shift range. Comparisons of the simulation results show that the proposed approxmated optimal LAS-CUSUM chart outperforms its traditional counterpart.

Abstract:
Cumulative Sum (Cusum) Control Schemes are widely used in industry for process and measurement control. Most Cusum applications have been in monitoring shifts in the mean level of a process rather than process variability. In this paper, we study the use of Markov chain approach in calculating the average run length (ARL) of a Cusum scheme when controlling variability. Control statisticsSandS2, whereSis the standard deviation of a normal process are used. The optimal Cusum schemes to detect small and large increases in the variability of a normal process are designed. The control statisticS2is then used to show that the Cusum scheme is superior to the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) in terms of its ability to quickly detect any large or small increases in the variability of a normal process. It is also shown that Cusum with control statistics sample variance(S2)and sample standard deviation(S)perform uniformly better than those with control statisticlogS2. Fast initial response (FIR) Cusum properties are also presented.

We consider the local power of the cusum and cusum of squares tests for structural change in the linear regression model. We show that the local power of the cusum of squares test equals its size for a wide class of structural changes, as compared to a nontrivial local power for the cusum test. The conventional ranking of these procedures is thus reversed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The global navigation satellite system (GNSS), as a high-time resolution and high-precision measurement technology, has been widely used in the field of deformation monitoring. Owing to the influence of uncontrollable factors, there are inevitably some abnormal data in the GNSS monitoring series. Thus, it is necessary to detect and identify abnormal data in the GNSS monitoring series to improve the accuracy and reliability of the deformation disaster law analysis and warning. Many methods can be used to detect abnormal data, among which the statistical process control theory, represented by the cumulative sum (CUSUM), is widely used. CUSUM usually constructs statistics and determines control limits based on the threshold criteria of the average run length (ARL) and then uses the control limits to identify abnormal data in CUSUM statistics. However, different degrees of the ‘trailing’ phenomenon exist in the interval of abnormal data identified by the algorithm, leading to a higher false alarm rate. Therefore, we propose an improved CUSUM method that uses breaks for additive season and trend (BFAST) instead of ARL-based control limits to identify abnormal data in CUSUM statistics to improve the accuracy of identification. The improved CUSUM method is used to detect abnormal data in the GNSS coordinate series. The results show that compared with CUSUM, the improved CUSUM method shows stronger robustness, more accurate detection of abnormal data, and a significantly lower false alarm rate.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction The aim of the present study was to investigate the learning curves of 2 trainees with different experience levels to reach proficiency in preoperative planning of the cup size based on learning curve cumulative summation (LC-CUSUM) statistics and a cumulative summation (CUSUM) test. Materials and methods One-hundred-twenty patients who had undergone primary total hip arthroplasty with a cementless cup were selected. Preoperative planning was performed by an experienced orthopedic surgeon. Trainee 1 (student) and trainee 2 (resident) planned the cup size. The trainees were blinded to the preoperative plan and the definitive cup size. Only after a cup size was chosen, the trainees were unblinded to the preoperative plan of the surgeon. LC-CUSUM was applied to both trainees to determine when proficiency in determining the appropriate cup size was reached. A CUSUM test was applied to ensure retention of proficiency. Results With reference to the preoperative plan of the surgeon, LC-CUSUM indicated proficiency after 94 planning attempts for trainee 1 and proficiency after 66 attempts for trainee 2, respectively. Trainee 1 and 2 maintained proficiency thereafter. With reference to the definitive cup size, LC-CUSUM did not signal competency within the first 120 planning attempts for trainee 1. Trainee 2 was declared competent after 103 attempts and retained competency thereafter. Conclusions LC-CUSUM/CUSUM allow for an individualized, quantitative and continuous assessment of planning quality. Based on LC-CUSUM statistics, the two trainees of this study gain proficiency in planning of the acetabular cup size after 50–100 attempts when an immediate feedback is provided. Previous experience positively influences the performance. The study serves as basis for the medical education of students and residents in joint replacement procedures.

Abstract:
We demonstrate a harvest control rule based on the self-starting cumulative sum (SS-CUSUM) control chart that can maintain a fish stock at its starting (status-quo) level. The SS-CUSUM is an indicator monitoring tool commonly used in quality control engineering and does not require a long time series or predefined reference point for detecting temporal trends. The reference points in SS-CUSUM are calibrated in the form of running means that are updated on an ongoing basis when new observations become available. The SS-CUSUM can be initiated with as few as two observations in the time series and can be applied long before many other methods, soon after initial data become available. A wide range of stock indicators can be monitored, but in this study, we demonstrate the method using an equally weighted sum of two indicators: a recruitment indicator and a large fish indicator from a simulated fishery. We assume that no life history data are available other than 2 years of both indicator data and current harvest levels when the SS-CUSUM initiates. The signals generated from SS-CUSUM trigger a harvest control rule (SS-CUSUM-HCR), where the shift that occurs in the indicator time series is computed and is used as an adjustment factor for updating the total allowable catch. Our study shows that the SS-CUSUM-HCR can maintain the fish stock at its starting status-quo level (even for overfished initial states) but has limited scope if the fishery is already in an undesirable state such as a stock collapse. We discuss how the SS-CUSUM approach could be adapted to move beyond a status-quo management strategy, if additional information on the desirable state of the fishery is available.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper deals with CUSUM tests based on grouped or classified observations. The computation of average run length is reduced to that of solving of a system of simultaneous linear equations. Moreover a corresponding approximation based on the Wald approximations for characteristics of sequential likelihood ratio tests is presented. The effect of grouping is investigated with a CUSUM test for the mean of a normal distribution based on F-optimal grouping schemes. The considered example demonstrates that hight efficient CUSUM tests can be obtained for F-optimal grouping schemes already with a small number of groups.

Abstract:
The cumulative sum (CUSUM) technique is well-established in theory and practice of process control. A comprehensive exposition of the method is given, e.g., by Wetherill and Brown (1991). A question that is seldom treated in the literature is that on the effect of serial correlation of the control variable. Johnson and Bagshaw (1974) investigate the effect of correlation on the run length distribution when the control variable follows a first order autoregressive or moving average process. They also give an approximate expression for the average run length of the CUSUM- technique for correlated control variables. In this paper we derive an exact expression for the average run length of a discretized CUSUM-technique, i.e., a technique that uses a scoring system for the observations of the control variable. The scoring system is that suggested by Munford (1980). Our results are derived for a control variable that is assumed to follow a first order autoregressive process and with normally distributed disturbances. After deriving in Section 2 the expression for the average run length we discuss its dependence on the process parameter and give a numerical illustration. In Section 3 we discuss corrections for the CUSUM-technique in order to keep the nominal risk for an out-of-control decision and compare our results with those given by Johnson and Bagshaw (1974). Abstract:
Firstly rather accurate approximations to the p value functions of the common Standard CUSUM test and the OLS-based CUSUM test for structural change are derived. Secondly alternative boundaries for both tests are suggested and their properties are examined by simulation of expected p values. It turns out that the power of the OLS-based CUSUM test for early and late structural changes can be improved, whereas this weakness of the Standard CUSUM test cannot be repaired by the new boundaries.

Abstract:
Over the past several years, improvements in clamp-on ultrasonic meter technology have caused increased interest in applying this technology within the natural gas industry. Clamp-on ultrasonic meters (CUSMs), which are mounted on the outside of a pipe, send and receive ultrasonic waveforms through the pipe wall. This configuration offers several potential advantages over in-line meters, including portability and the ability to be installed without shutdown and disassembly of the pipeline. CUSMs, like their in-line counterparts, use sophisticated electronics to control the meter operation and to monitor parameters such as transducer signal strength, path velocities, and speed of sound. Because of these features, CUSMs are being considered for their potential as in-situ verification and as diagnostic tools. Having such portable tools to quickly verify meter performance would save considerable time in troubleshooting causes of lost and unaccounted-for (LAUF) gas, thus, minimizing overall LAUF totals. The ability to validate meter performance in-situ would also significantly reduce operating and maintenance costs of metering stations, particularly costs of unnecessary recalibrations. This project specifically addressed the ability of a CUSM to measure distorted profiles with sufficient resolution to determine if the flow is properly conditioned for flow measurement by other meter types. It also addressed the accuracy with which CUSM measurements, performed with sufficient spatial fidelity, can be used to provide a reference flow rate for in-situ meter proving. The test approach was to traverse a single ultrasonic transducer pair around the perimeter of the pipe in sufficiently small increments to measure the flow field at a given pipe cross section independent of the amount of flow distortion present. Velocity profile measurements performed at the same locations were used as an independent check of the CUSMs profile sensitivity.
