TITLE: Topic childhood in the Marina Tsvetaeva's poetry in the period till the emigration AUTHOR: Jana Bruněva SUPERVISOR: PaedDr. Antonín Hlaváček ABSTRACT: My thesis aims at presentation of the form of childhood in the poetry by Marina Tsvetaeva, namely by means of her poems, that I have carefully read through. I have aimed primarily at the poetry from the period of the authoress' earliest creative years up to her emigration. This period of her literary activity was very fruitful and very varied as to its topics, form, vocabulary or metrics. I should like to find out by my investigation, how her own childhood influenced her creative activity and whether these motives are present in the whole creative period of here, I have chosen, or only in its particular part. This master thesis is devoted to Jana Stroblova, the Czech poet, novelist and translator from Russian language. The thesis is aimed at several goals: 1) to summarize and unite the known facts about life of this author and try to capture her personality, 2) to describe the relationship of Jana Stroblova to the Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva, as the vast part of Stroblova's translations is dedicated to her, 3) to establish the similarities between the personalities of Stroblova and Tsvetaeva as well as to find the parallels in their poems, and, afterwards, to clarify the reasons that led Stroblova to decision to translate Tsvetaeva, 4) to summarize the reflections of Stroblova's translations while emphasizing the translations of Tsvetaeva's work and to use these reflections to define Stroblova's translation methodology, 5) to confront the findings of the thesis with opinions of Jana Stroblova during an interview with her. In my dissertation "Russian Exile and Inner Emigration An Irregular History of a Cultural Phenomenon" I attempt to examine the issue of the Russian mentality against the background of Russian literary and intellectual trends over the course of one hundred years - from the December Revolt in 1825 to the period after the October Revolution in 1917. The phenomenon of inner emigration and exile, which is characteristic for this period of time, is examined through the use of authentic sources, that is solely literary and epistolary records, as well as through the Czech reflection of the Russian soul, as it was perceived and presented from the time of Masaryk and Slavík and after them by many Czech and foreign scholars up to the present. Examining authentic testimonies, the aim of the work is to make the point that despite the confrontation with European rationalist influences, the Russian world and the so- called Russian soul essentially always retained a spiritual dimension from the Eastern civilizations, based not on rationality but on sensation, not on scholastic argumentation of the external existence of God but on a realization of the unity and the inner interconnection of the material and spiritual world.

Czech translations of six essays by Marina Tsvetaeva that focus on poetry writing and on the work of fellow-poets were examined, following a detailed analysis of Tsvetaeva's style and the historical and biographical context of her prose. The evaluation criteria for the translations were: accuracy in reproducing the author's meaning, the ability to distinguish the characteristic features of Tsveateva's style from the systemic features of Russian and the translators' creative input in reproducing especially the lexical and euphonic intricacies of the original. In addition to providing a general overview of translation problems posed by the author's style the work attempted to trace differences between the approaches of two translators of Tsvetaeva's princi pal essays on art: Jana Štroblová (Art in the Light oj Conscience) and Jan Zábrana (Poet and Time, The Epic and Lyric ofContemporary Russia). All Czech translations were found seriously lacking in accuracy; the errors in the reproduction of meaning are partly due to the idiosyncrasies of Tsvetaeva's style (e.g. punctuation), but sometimes to sheer carelessness. The thesis focuses on the rendering of the poetics of Anna Akhmatova and Marina Tsvetaeva in Czech translations. The first part deals with the phenomenon of poetesses in the Russian literature and subsequently with Akhmatova's and Tsvetaeva's life, works, style and reception. The second part is focused on contrastive translatological analysis of different approaches to their poetry and detailed analysis of existing Czech translations of Akhmatova's poem Rekviem and Tsvetaeva's work Popytka revnosti. It defines the approach of all translators to translation and evaluates the quality and adequacy of individual translation solutions in relation to the author's style and intention.
