Full text
Abstract:
The most prevalent cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are atherosclerotic, affecting all arterial territories. Epidemiologic studies such as the Framingham and INTERHEART studies have firmly established the commonest or ‘traditional’ risk factors for CVD; namely, smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolaemia, and a family history of CVD. The ‘risk-factors approach’ to CVD looks at these factors, individually and in combination, in the causation of disease. The complex causation pathways involve interplay of individual factors, whether genetic or environmental. More recently, there has been increasing interest in ‘epigenetics’ or the way in which the environment interacts with genes in the process underlying CVD. This chapter presents an analysis of the traditional and novel risk factors for CVD.

Wolters, Alexander, Ulf Ziemann, and Reiner Benecke. The cortical silent period. Edited by Charles M. Epstein, Eric M. Wassermann, and Ulf Ziemann. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198568926.013.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
The cortical silent period (cSP) refers to an interruption of voluntary muscle contraction by transcranial stimulation of the contralateral motor cortex. This article summarizes the physiology of cSP and gives guidelines as to how the cSP should be recorded and analysed, and refers to useful clinical applications. It describes the mechanisms at the spinal and supraspinal level can account for the cSP. It is currently thought that the cSP is mediated by gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors. cSP measurements are easy to obtain but require a standardized protocol to allow useful interpretation. Conditioning electrical stimulation of cutaneous nerves shortens the cSP. A conditioning transcranial magnetic stimulation pulse also affects cSP duration. The cSP duration is influenced by pathological conditions. cSP is an attractive probe to assess motor cortical inhibition in health and disease.

Abstract:
Political parties define the supply of policy choices for voters. This chapter uses the three Candidates to the European Parliament (CEP) studies to determine the political views of elites and thereby the policy positions of their respective parties. As for European citizens, CEPs’ issue opinions are structured by a two-dimensional space defined by the economic and cultural cleavages. The analyses also show that many of the demographic forces, such as social class or religious background, which reshaped public opinion, also influence the views of party elites on both cleavage dimensions. The chapter maps the distribution of national party elites on both cleavages. The analyses are based on CEP studies in 1979, 1994, and 2009.

Cadoppi, Alberto, and Mattia Celva. Competency to Stand Trial in Italy. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198788478.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter assesses competency to stand trial in Italian Criminal Procedure, using a two-pronged analysis. First, there is analysis of the relevant provisions of the Italian Code of Criminal Procedure (CCP). Pursuant to these provisions, the trial must be suspended in case the defendant is not capable of meaningful participation. The CCP also regulates various aspects connected to this incapacity. In particular, it sets forth the grounds on which the suspension must be granted and provides for the means through which the incompetency should be ascertained, if not immediately apparent. The picture painted by the Code is complex and many of these provisions have been challenged as unconstitutional in front of the Constitutional Court, with different results. The chapter focuses on such problems, in order to illustrate the approach of the Constitutional Court, as well as examining the solutions proposed by legal scholarship, including the definition of incapacity.
