Abstract:
‘In 1986 we should no longer settle for books that present women as almost invisible entities.’(Charlayne Allan, 1986, p.6).Charlayne Allan's conclusion in her 1986 work, ‘Images of Women’ calls for a transformation in the inclusion and presentation of women in Classics educational materials. However, 33 years later, the presentation of women in educational textbooks remains a prevalent issue in many countries today with slow progress being made (BBC, 2017). The discipline of Classics has been criticised for being particularly slow in addressing the issue of gender bias in textbooks, both ensuring that there is a female voice in educational materials and also responding to female scholarship (Churchill, 2006, p.86). There has been some criticism of the popular and widely-used Cambridge Latin Course with the suggestion that ancient women are not equally or fairly represented through the characters and storylines used in the textbooks (Churchill, 2006; Upchurch, 2013). The course was first written in the 1970s and so, perhaps understandably, lacks strong female characters which might suit the engagement of students of the modern world. One solution which has been proposed by the critics mentioned above is the re-designing of the course with a more equal gender balance. However, I am unsure as to whether this is the best way forward. The re-designing of an entire textbook course (and all its online resources, etc.) is a complex undertaking, especially as the CLC has been carefully constructed around a continuous storyline. The creation of female characters, who would have a real significance to students’ learning and understanding of the Roman world, cannot simply be added into the stories without significantly changing the course (Joffe, 2019). Moreover, the way in which women are depicted in the CLC should not merely be a numerical matter. Consideration of how best to accurately present and teach students about the experiences of women in the Roman world, bearing in mind the Roman patriarchal way of thinking, could be endangered to achieve a mathematical solution for gender balance. The success of the CLC is largely down to its popular storylines and characters and so, for the purposes of my research, I will focus on the balance between the importance of an engaging storyline and at the same time, ensuring that the lives of ancient women are accurately presented through the female characters.

Abstract:
Carney’s complex (CNC) is an autosomal dominant disorder, which was described in 1985 as ‘the complex of myxomas, spotty pigmentation, and endocrine overactivity’ in 40 patients (1). Since then, more than 500 index cases have been reported, resulting in better definition of the disease and the establishment of diagnostic criteria (2, 3). As implied from the initial description, CNC is not only a multiple neoplasia syndrome, but also causes a variety of pigmented lesions of the skin and mucosae. (4) Several patients described in earlier years under the acronyms NAME (nevi, atrial myxomas, and ephelides) and LAMB (lentigines, atrial myxomas, and blue nevi) probably had CNC (5, 6). Thus, lentigines, blue nevi, café-au-lait spots, and cutaneous tumours, such as myxomas, fibromas, and others, are major features of the disease (4, 7–10). The clinical characteristics of CNC have been reviewed and are presented in Box 6.15.1 (2, 9). A definite diagnosis of CNC is given if two or more major manifestations are present (4, 9, 11, 12). A number of related manifestations may accompany or suggest the presence of CNC but are not considered diagnostic of the disease (Box 6.15.1). Cutaneous manifestations constitute three of the major disease manifestations: (1) spotty skin pigmentation with a typical distribution (lips, conjunctiva, and inner or outer canthi, genital mucosa); (2) cutaneous or mucosal myxoma; and (3) blue nevi (multiple) or epithelioid blue nevus. Suggestive or associated with CNC findings but not diagnostic are: (1) intense freckling (without darkly pigmented spots or typical distribution); (2) multiple blue nevi of common type; (3) café-au-lait spots or other ‘birthmarks’; and (4) multiple skin tags or other skin lesions, including lipomas and angiofibromas. The relationship between the cutaneous and noncutaneous manifestations of CNC appears to be an essential clue to the molecular aetiology of the disease. According to the latest reports, more than half of CNC patients present with both characteristic dermatological and endocrine signs; however, a significant number of patients present with skin lesions that are only ‘suggestive’ and not characteristic of CNC (9). A recent classification based on both dermatological and endocrine markers has subgrouped CNC patients as: multisymptomatic (with extensive endocrine and skin signs); intermediate (with few dermatological and endocrine manifestations); and, paucisymptomatic (with isolated primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease (PPNAD) alone and no cutaneous signs) (9).

Full text
Abstract:
Regenerative tissues such as the skin epidermis, the gastrointestinal mucosa, or the haematopoietic system are maintained by the activity of rare stem cells, which sit at the helm of the cellular hierarchy of these tissues. Moreover, in response to injury signals, the tissue stem cells are activated and become critical for tissue repair. In analogy to the normal situation, many haematopoietic malignancies and carcinomas are also hierarchically organized with a cancer stem cell (CSC) at the top which is responsible for tumour growth and progression. Dissemination of CSCs from the primary tumour into the blood circulation leads to colonization and metastasis formation in distant organs. CSCs show increased resistance to chemotherapy and radiation and surviving CSCs after therapy (minimal residual disease) are thought to be the cellular source for disease relapse and metastases. Targeting and elimination of the entire CSC pool is required for long-term cure from the disease.

Abstract:
Care planning is not merely another task on the checklist for providing children’s palliative care (CPC), but rather can be regarded as the foundation for accomplishing nearly all other CPC goals. Based on continuous communication and holistic assessment, care planning is a means to facilitating patient-family quality of life, not an end in and of itself. This CPC task is important because it enables practitioners to celebrate patient-family autonomy, improve the delivery of care according to their wishes and values, and avoid uncertainty. Care planning is also foundational to other activities which are pivotal to quality of life, including communication, acceptance, and trust.

Abstract:
Choroid plexus tumours (CPT) are relatively rare and include three pathological subtypes: papilloma (CPP) (benign); carcinoma (CPC) (malignant); atypical papilloma (ACPP) (intermediate). Most cases of CPT occur during early childhood and infancy; however, occurrence at all paediatric ages as well as adulthood has been documented. The main treatment of CPT is surgical, aiming for complete resection in all subtypes of CPT. The location and vascularity of CPT present a special surgical challenge. Surgical excision of CPP can be curative. In the malignant CPC form, adjuvant chemotherapy is indicated. The role of radiotherapy is controversial. A subset of patients with CPT harbour germline or somatic TP53 mutations characterized by greater tumour aggressiveness and decreased survival.

Abstract:
Children’s Palliative Care (CPC) is a relatively new and emerging field with great potential for helping children and families who are living with life-limiting conditions (LLC) globally. There is a growing recognition of the need to develop services for these children, but the overall picture remains one of huge variance in different parts of the world and even within countries. The evidence base is still small, there is a great need for more education, and considerable scope for further development. Broader awareness of the values and philosophy of CPC, its history and development, and its place in society will help promote CPC further. As the field increases, we will need to enhance the international roles of our own local children’s organizations, and continue to develop paediatric networks, as well as link into global priorities in healthcare such as public health, Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Abstract:
Whilst non-communicable diseases provided the impetus for the development of children’s palliative care (CPC) in the developed world, it was a single communicable illness human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) that was the catalyst for the development of many CPC programmes in the developing world. Whilst considerable gains have been made in preventing and controlling paediatric AIDS globally, there is still benefit to an integrated palliative care approach to the care of these children and especially for those living in countries without access to anti-retrovirals. Furthermore, there are many other communicable diseases associated with significant health-related suffering in children that could benefit from palliative care. This chapter proposes grouping these diseases using the well-known Association for Children with Terminal Conditions (ACT) categorization and discusses examples of important communicable diseases in each category. The need for improved CPC as part of the humanitarian response to acute communicable disease outbreaks such as Ebola virus disease is also explored.

Abstract:
Although chest X-ray (CXR) is a well-studied classic diagnostic tool, this easy-to-obtain, readily accessible imaging modality is still capable of giving physicians new information on patient conditions in an efficient manner. This chapter provides intensivists, cardiologists, cardiology fellows, and medical students with concise information on recent data on CXR imaging and interpretation and briefly reviews the most common medical conditions in which CXR is useful. It includes a brief review of a multistep approach to the evaluation of the quality of chest radiographs and the systematic description of imaged structures. This chapter covers water retention, air collection, and lung-related problems, gives information on monitoring of line and device placements (central venous catheters, tubes, pacemaker lead positions, etc.), and also focuses on the pitfalls of image interpretation in intensive care unit settings. In addition, the chapter reviews recent data on accuracy of other imaging modalities, in terms of describing certain abnormalities, as compared with regular chest radiographs.

Abstract:
This chapter explores ways to avoid plagiarism in digital textbooks' use and development. Traditionally, the plagiarism recommendation refers to books and articles. How about textbooks? However, to avoid plagiarism it is important to make sure that licensing in digital textbooks' use and development is properly used. For licensing to be a benefit for learning, it is important to note that it may impose additional costs. This chapter reflects and includes in discussion the issue on licensing, specifically the Creative Common (CC) license of open educational resources. Secondly, it considers how the Creative Common License could improve the proper use of digital textbooks. Finally, it explores how the use of digital tools can allow students to learn more effectively.

Abstract:
As reported by the UN, the COVID-19 pandemic has touched almost 1.5 billion students forcing school cessations in 191 countries, changing the daily-routine of over 63 million teachers. While UNESCO and partners launched the Global Educational Coalition to produce solutions to “make digital learning more inclusive,” aiming at helping countries to gather resources to implement “remote education through hi-tech, low-tech and no-tech approaches,” a lot of actors have been holding webinars on the educational challenges and dimension of the pandemic, with participants enrolled from all over the world, from East to West. The European Association for International Education, through its EAIE Community Moment and EAIE Webinar Academy organized virtual meetings on a range of subjects, COVID19 response, mobilities and international students’ recruitment, the regional Francophone center for Central and Eastern Europe organized webinars on how to teach online the Francophonie today, the Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe has constantly published updates on distant learning tools or MOOCs courses. While the webinars discuss strategies to maintain education continuity, considering children and young people in need, presenting to professors and educators a wide variety of tools, there are quite a few discussing the pedagogy of online education. Although educators have been sharing debates and exchanging opinions in reference to the e-learning platforms for more than ten years now, this very situation made them found themselves obliged to embrace, at last, the distant online learning. So, from hypothetical, theoretical, or, in some happy cases, complementary mode of e-learning platform teaching and learning, we quickly moved to the reality that imposed immediate response, within modern technology tools’ use in order to make our students carry on with their studies. And here comes the real challenge! Moving to the e-learning platforms does not mean relocating your lesson from the textbook to an educational e-learning platform, but rather translating pedagogy strategy into tool-adapted, computer-assisted online education that shall surely ease our task to reach the proposed objectives, if we are opened to change! In this paper, we will address these issues based on our teaching experience through the pandemic.
