AbstractThe need for more sustainable production has led to an increased popularity of thermoplastic fibre reinforced composites over the last years. Typical production processes rely on autoclave and/or sequential processes, which lead to long cycle times, high energy consumption and high costs. One step in-situ production processes, like the thermoplastic laser assisted automated fibre placement, provide an ideal solution to these challenges while enabling the benefits of circular economy through improved recyclability. An essential part of the production process is to ensure full consolidation during layup. One of the main influences on consolidation is the applied pressure of the compaction roller. Increasingly complex part geometries with curved surfaces place special demands on the deformation and adaptability of these rollers. Here, current solutions quickly reach their limits. This paper investigates new concepts for the consolidation roller to enable successful use of in-situ placement technologies on complex part geometries. Different sheath thicknesses and materials were investigated in experiments, followed by simulative investigation of further compaction roller concepts.

Abstract:
Wake and sleep states are defined by behavioral and electrophysiological biomarkers such as the electroencephalogram and electromyogram. Studies using selective neuronal activation and inactivation in experimental animals show that the control of the wake–sleep cycle primarily depends on glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons distributed in the basal forebrain, hypothalamus, and brainstem. These neurons receive modulatory influence of cholinergic, monoaminergic, and peptidergic neurons. Whereas arousal depends on brainstem and basal forebrain mechanisms, the maintenance of the waking states and the transition from wakefulness to sleep depend on the hypothalamus. The sleep–wake cycle is primarily regulated by the circadian rhythm and homeostatic sleep pressure. Sleep has a critical role in memory consolidation, synaptic plasticity, and maintenance of homeostasis in CNS. Disturbances of circadian regulation and sleep architecture are major manifestations of genetic, neurodegenerative, and autoimmune disorders.

Abstract:
This chapter begins by acknowledging the differences in the economic growth mechanisms employed by advanced economies and latecomer economies at middle- or lower-income stages and by highlighting a very “narrow passage” between these countries. The chapter explains the nature of the narrow passage in terms of three detours. The first detour is promoting imitative innovations in the form of petit patents and trademarks instead of trying to promote a high level of IPR protection, including patent rights. The second detour is first promoting domestic value-added and reducing a country’s reliance on GVCs before an economy is fully coupled with GVCs. The third detour is specializing in short-cycle technology-based sectors instead of trying to directly enter long-cycle technology-based sectors/segments. While the consolidation of technological capabilities has long been suggested as a vital requirement for economic catch-up, this chapter shows that such consolidation must be carefully designed and implemented.

Abstract:
In a two-stage fresh food supply chain composed of a supplier who operates a single variety of fresh agricultural products, multiple retailers who are concentrated in the same distribution area are sensitive to the price and freshness of the products. In addition, the deterioration rate of fresh products can be reduced by effective fresh-keeping efforts to maintain the freshness of the products. A strategy of shipping consolidation is used to solve the high-cost problem of fresh cold chain transportation. The objective is to maximize the supplier’s long-term average profit while determining the optimal product price, shipment cycle length, and preservation technology investment. For a given fresh-keeping effort, it is first proved that there exists a unique optimal product price and optimal shipment cycle length. After that, it is proved that the long-term average profit is a strictly concave function of the fresh-keeping efforts and an efficient algorithm is designed to solve the joint problem. Finally, the numerical example analysis is carried out to study how each parameter affects the optimal solution of the model through the sensitivity analysis of parameters. The results show that there is a threshold for the investment decision of preservation technology under natural conditions. At the same time, the effect of preservation investment is more obvious, the profit of suppliers will significantly increase.

Abstract:
Honeycomb sandwich structures are co-cured to bond partially cured thermoset prepreg facesheets with an adhesive layer to both sides of the honeycomb core under a pre-defined pressure and temperature cycle in an autoclave. High dependency of the co-cure process on the materials and process parameters makes it susceptible to defect such as poorly consolidated facesheet and highly porous bondline which can cause premature failure of the structure. The temperature and pressure in the autoclave and pressure in the vacuum bag are the parameters that describe the cure cycle of the process. In this w

Abstract Composite repairing is an issue because of the size of the parts, the cost of the production equipment and the poor consolidation between the parent part and the repairing patches. In this study an out-of-autoclave procedure is proposed where the agglomeration pressure is provided by shape memory foams. These foams can be shaped in the desired form by means of a thermos-mechanical cycle, and provide additional pressure if constrained during recovery. Shape recovery is achieved by using the same thermal cycle which is necessary for the cure of the patches. In this study, thermoplastic

The fatigue assessment of safety relevant components is of importance for ageing management with regard to safety and reliability of nuclear power plants. Reactor internals are subjected to thermo-mechanical fatigue induced by operational temperature transients and to flow induced vibrations. The resulting complex loading collectives induce low cycle (LCF), high cycle (HCF) and even very high cycle (VHCF) fatigue and their interaction. The existing methodological gaps within the current fatigue assessment approach are to be closed. Design code fatigue analyses use defined loads and frequencies

Abstract Transition to a Circular Economy (CE) will be facilitated by information transfer between life cycle stages, and, particularly, the transition can be accelerated at the product design stage where the decisions have impact throughout the life cycle. Product design, which is often manual, subjective, and speculative, can be enhanced by data transfer from other stages of product, manufacturing, material, and supply chain life cycles. Mutually, the CE system can benefit from design systems that are real-time, designer-in-the-loop, and dynamic with respect to life cycle information streams

In this paper, a two-dimensional (2D) porous model is established to investigate the predication of the wave-induced pore pressure accumulations in marine sediments. In the new model, the VARANS equation is used as the governing equation for the wave motion, while the Biot’s consolidation theory is used for porous seabed. The present model is verified with the previous experimental data [1] and provides a better prediction of pore pressure accumulation than the previous solution [2]. With the new model, a 2D liquefied zone is formed at the beginning of the process, and then gradually move down

Abstract Sand control poses huge financial loses during production operations particularly in mature fields. It hinders economic oil production rates as well as damages downhole and surface equipment due to its abrasive action. Excessive sand production rates can plug the wellhead, flow lines, and separators which can result in detrimental well control situations. This paper will provide a comparative study on various sand control mechanisms by reviewing the latest advancements in sand management techniques. Bridges are critical components of transportation infrastructure. This research addresses the need to extend the service life of bridges by improving the safety and reliability of bridge abutments and reducing their life-cycle cost and footprints. Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) is a known strategy to enhance the economy and performance of bridge abutments. In addition, the application of rotary-kiln-manufactured lightweight aggregate backfills improves the performance of MSE bridge abutments with a leaner structural system. Such improvements include a reduction of structural demands due t

Tillage modifies soil structure, altering conditions for plant growth and transport processes through the soil. However, the resulting loose structure is unstable and susceptible to collapse due to aggregate fragmentation during wetting and drying cycles, and coalescense of moist aggregates by internal capillary forces and external compactive stresses. Presently, limited understanding of these complex processes often leads to consideration of the soil plow layer as a static porous medium.
