Rooney, Lee. "Prophecy in Shakespeare's English history cycles." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2014. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/2003748/.

Abstract:
Prophecy — that is, the action of foretelling or predicting the future, particularly a future thought to represent the will of God — is an ever-present aspect of Shakespeare’s historical dramaturgy. The purpose of this thesis is to offer a reading of the dramas of Shakespeare’s English history cycles — from 1 Henry VI to Henry V — that focuses exclusively upon the role played by prophecy in representing and reconstructing the past. It seeks to show how, through close attention to the moments when prophecy emerges in these historical dramas, we might arrive at a different understanding of them, both as dramatic narratives and as meditations on the nature of history itself. As this thesis seeks to demonstrate, moreover, Shakespeare’s treatment of prophecy in any one play can be viewed, in effect, as a key that can take us to the heart of that drama’s wider concerns. The comparatively recent conception of a body of historical plays that are individually distinct and no longer chained to the Tillyardian notion of a ‘Tudor myth’ (or any other ‘grand narrative’) has freed prophecy from effectively fulfilling the rather one-dimensional role of chorus. However, it has also raised as-yet-unanswered questions about the function of prophecy in Shakespeare’s English history cycles, which this thesis aims to consider. One of the key arguments presented here is that Shakespeare utilises prophecy not to emphasise the pervasiveness of divine truth and providential design, but to express the political, narratorial, and interpretative disorder of history itself. It is also argued that any conception of the English history plays that rejects homogeneity and even consistency must also acknowledge that prophecy, as a form of historical narrative in essence, cannot be expected to manifest itself in the same ways in each drama throughout Shakespeare’s career. In this sense, the purpose of this thesis is to show that Shakespeare not only uses ‘prophecy’ to construct ‘history’: as a dramatist, he also thinks through ‘prophecy’, in various ways and from multiple perspectives, in order to intensify and complicate our sense of the complexity and drama of history itself. This thesis treats the English chronicle plays in order of composition and performance. While the Introduction contextualizes concepts of prophecy in the early modern period, and its relationship to history in particular, chapters 1–3 address the Henry VI plays and Richard III, with chapters 4 and 5 examining Richard II and the two parts of Henry IV. Henry V is addressed in the Conclusion. The inclusion of the second cycle of histories, rarely interrogated by critics in relation to prophecy, is crucial to the approach taken by this thesis. Unlike previous studies, this thesis privileges prophecy in both the earlier and the later histories, not least because its perceived absence from the plays of the second cycle is capable of informing our understanding of Shakespeare’s historical dramaturgy more generally. What is at stake in this reading of prophecy in Shakespeare’s English histories, both locally in the plays themselves and more generally across the cycles, are questions of causality, identity (both personal and national), monarchy, and the art of theatre itself.

Abstract:
This study reassesses the relationship between the monumental collection of Henricus Isaac's mass-proper cycles published as the Choralis Constantinus and the composer's original massproper projects. The first section charts changing views of Isaac as a historical figure, from his time to ours. Following this, the second section pursues the implications of recent redatings of major Choralis sources with a detailed investigation of the transmission of the Choralis' s music from composer to print. This analysis suggests new views for the make-up of each of the projects known to have been compiled together in the print: the earlier theory of a Constance Common of Saints is dismissed, whilst a mass-ordinary that may have belonged to the Constance project is identified; it is suggested that Isaac's mass-propers for the Imperial court cannot easily be seen as a single project, and that some anonymous propercycles not found in the Choralis may be Isaac's and may have belonged to Imperial repertory. To shed further light on the original scopes of Isaac's mass-proper projects, the third section of this thesis investigates Isaac's non-Choralis mass-propers. Particular attention is given to the large collection of such items found in two related manuscripts from latersixteenth- century Augsburg. Examination of the context and function of these manuscripts suggests that the unica they preserve attributed to Isaac are spurious. On the other hand, consideration of the Choralis's transmission and the shape of Isaac's secure Imperial repertory suggests that some anonymous cycles in the manuscript WeimB A are Isaac's. The final part of this study re-examines the attributions and de-attributions made in the first two sections at a music-stylistic level. No conflicting evidence is found. On the contrary, all earlier suggestions are reinforced.

Cook, James Matthew. "Mid-fifteenth-century English mass cycles in continental sources." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2014. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/30778/.

Full text
Abstract:
Fifteenth-century English music had a profound impact on mainland Europe, with several important innovations (e.g. the cyclic cantus firmus Mass) credited as English in origin. However, the turbulent history of the Church in England has left few English sources for this deeply influential repertory. The developing narrative surrounding apparently English technical innovations has therefore often focussed on the recognition of English works in continental manuscripts, with these efforts most recently crystallised in Curtis and Wathey's 'Fifteenth-Century English Liturgical Music: A List of the Surviving Repertory'. The focus of discussion until now has generally been on a dichotomy between English and continental origin. However, as more details emerge of the opportunities for cultural cross-fertilisation, it becomes increasingly clear that this may be a false dichotomy. This thesis re-evaluates the complex issues of provenance and diffusion affecting the mid-fifteenth-century cyclic Mass. By breaking down the polarization between English and continental origins, it offers a new understanding of the provenance and subsequent use of many Mass cycles. Contact between England and the continent was frequent, multifarious and quite possibly reciprocal and, despite strong national trends, there exists a body of work that can best be understood in relation to international cultural exchange. This thesis helps to clarify the provenance of a number of Mass cycles, but also suggests that, for Masses such as the anonymous Thomas cesus and Du cuer je souspier, Le Rouge's So ys emprentid, and even perhaps Bedyngham's Sine nomine, cultural exchange is key to our understanding. This thesis also offers a more detailed overview of the chronology of fifteenth-century English Mass cycles and defines their various structural norms, as well as those Masses which depart from these.

O'Neill, Victoria Ruth Woodgate. "The role of the feminine in masculine cycles of death, rebirth and new life : Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Babel, Bulgakov and Pasternak." Thesis, Keele University, 2015. http://eprints.keele.ac.uk/2352/.

Abstract:
This thesis uses the narrative framework developed by Theresa de Lauretis’ essay ‘Desire in Narrative’ (1984) to shed new light on the development of male and female characters in texts by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, Isaac Babel, Mikhail Bulgakov and Boris Pasternak. De Lauretis’ narratological framework is based on work by Vladimir Propp and Yury Lotman. She draws attention to the inherently masculine identification of heroes, and argues that it is the development of these masculine heroes that drives narrative. I apply this insight to nineteenth-century texts including Crime and Punishment and The Idiot, War and Peace, Anna Karenina and a selection of Tolstoy’s short stories. From the twentieth century, I consider Red Cavalry, The Master and Margarita and Doctor Zhivago. This range of works, by five different writers spanning two centuries, draws out themes in the portrayal of male heroes changing and developing, spiritually and intellectually ‘moving’, throughout narratives. I show the variety of ways female characters act as helpers, or donors, to their male counterparts; and also as the prize awaiting them at the end of their successful quest. This re-reading highlights the significance of cycles of death, transformation and rebirth for the development of masculine heroes. While in texts by Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, male heroes strive for intellectual and rational mastery, in twentieth-century texts the focus shifts to male characters’ abilities to exercise artistic and creative freedom. In contrast to the cerebral and imaginative freedom associated with masculine heroes, I highlight portrayals of physical and sexual violence against women’s bodies, showing that female charcters are associated with their physical bodies to a far greater extent than male heroes experience embodiedness. The intellectual freedom and development of masculine heroes is privileged, while female characters remain in static positions, more defined by bodily limitations and vulnerabilities than male protagonists.

This monograph evaluates the role played by the credit to the private sector on the boom-bust cycle experienced by the Brazilian economy between 2003-2017. The study is motivated by recent theoretical and empirical contributions arriving after the Global Financial Crisis on the role played by financial accelerators and transmission channels in driving systemic financial fragility. It departs from a key insight from Adrian and Shin (2010) where factors affecting the equity base of financial intermediaries operate as a powerful transmission channel for shocks. The strong expansion of the financial activities during the period, coupled with the unprecedent growth of debt and leverage of the non-financial private sector, provide a promising scenario to test that insight. A Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) will be applied to identify common trends on financial and real variables to help to identify effects from shocks and causalities comprising variables related to debt, leverage, activity, collaterals, and funds supply. Thus, it aims at shedding new lights on the comprehension of that episode, so filling a gap on this debate polarized between those who see Brazil as a victim of a stressed global economy, and others who blame a long account of derailing economic policies in driving this fate.

O'Connell, William David. "Environmental timing and control of reproduction in the powan of Loch Lomond 'Coregonus lavaretus (L) (Teleostei)' in relation to its pineal organ." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2659.

Full text
Abstract:
The reproductive cycle of Coregonus lavaretus (L. ) in Loch Lomond was investigated by monthly sampling. The stages of the cycle occurred at the same time each year and were precisely timed. The environment followed a regular pattern which varied seasonally and was repeated annually. Spawning synchrony within the population during the short breeding period may be in response to lunar phases. A qualitative echosounding survey was made. The spatial distribution of the fish is probably related to their feeding behaviour and was mainly pelagic in summer and benthic in winter. Diel vertical migrations were recorded at dawn and dusk and appeared to be related to negative solar altitudes. The fish occurred at the surface during the night and persisted with their diel vertical migrations when feeding behaviour was benthic. The regulation of the reproductive cycle in the common sole Solea solea was investigated. The timing of spawning is ultimately determined by sea temperature, and spawning synchrony within the population is probably achieved in the initiation of exogenous vitellogenesis by a unified response within the breeding population to a stimulatory photoperiod. In both Solea solea and Coregonus lavaretus, initiation of exogenous vitellogenesis occurred during a rapid rise in the condition of the fish. The photosensitivity of the reproductive system may possibly be linked to a threshold condition. The pineal organ of Coregonus lavaretus is typically salmonid and the convoluted epithelium contained photoreceptors, interstitial cells, and neurones. The interstitial cells gave rise to processes which extended into the perivascular space. Photoreceptor cells synapsed with neurones, photoreceptor cells (lateral processes) and possibly other cell types. The results suggest that the pineal organ functions as a photoreceptor.

Kealey, Josephene. "The Mythology of the Small Community in Eight American and Canadian Short Story Cycles." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/19938.

Full text
Abstract:
Scholarship has firmly established that the short story cycle is well-suited to representations of community. This study considers eight North American examples of the genre: four by Canadian authors Stephen Leacock, Duncan Campbell Scott, George Elliott, and Alice Munro; and four by American authors Sarah Orne Jewett, Sherwood Anderson, John Cheever, and Joyce Carol Oates. My original idea was to discover whether there were significant differences between the Canadian and American cycles, but ultimately I became far more interested in the way that all of the cycles address community formation and disintegration. The focus of each cycle is a small community, whether a small town, a village, or a suburb. In all of the examples, the authors address the small community as the focus of anxiety, concern, criticism, and praise, with special attention to the way in which, despite its manifold failings, the small community continues to inspire longings for the ideal home and source of identity. The narrative feature that ultimately provided the critical framework for the study is the recurring presence of the metropolis in all of the eight cycles. The city, set on the horizons of these small communities, consistently provides a backdrop against which author and characters seem to measure and understand their lives. Always an influence (whether for good or bad), the city’s presence is constructed as the other against which the small community’s identity is formulated and understood. The relationship between small community and city led me to an investigation into the mythology of the small community, a mythology that sets the small community in opposition to the city, portraying the former as the keeper of virtue and the latter as the disseminator of vice. The cycles themselves, as I increasingly discovered, challenge the mythology by identifying how the small community depends, in large part, on the city for self-understanding. The small community, however, as an idea, and a mythic ideal, is never dismissed as obsolete or irrelevant.

Conrad, Thomas.

Full text
Abstract:

Soper, Harriet Clementine. "A count of days : the life course in Old English poetry." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/277493.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the representation of the human life course in Old English poetry. It attends to constructions of the lifespan as a durational unit, as well as the ‘stages’ or discrete age-related experiences which together form patterns for life development, shared across a diverse range of texts. Throughout this study, the importance of close-reading is emphasised; the bulk of the analysis is concerned with issues of style, lexis and narrative. By these means, it becomes possible to perceive how concepts of the human life course shade into other networks of meaning: these include ideas of ensoulment and embodiment, life experiences of non-human entities, wider narrative patterns which impact representations of life progression, mechanisms and hierarchies of social role and communal existence, and systems of memory collection and the nurturing of ‘wisdom’. The introductory chapter addresses various possible modes of ‘life course’ structuring, in both Anglo-Saxon writings and modern scholarly traditions. Latin and Old English vocabularies of ageing are summarised and an overview is given of previous scholarship attendant on the Anglo-Saxon material. The following three chapters of the thesis then assess representations of different parts of the life course in different groups of texts. The second chapter is concerned with depictions of early life in the Exeter Book Riddles; it contends that these texts have been unduly passed over in discussions of ageing in Old English, seemingly due to their (mostly) non-human subjects. The third chapter addresses the treatment of early and late adulthood in the verse holy lives Andreas, Guthlac A, Juliana and Judith: it is in this chapter that concepts of the life course most clearly intersect with issues of social organisation. The fourth chapter is concerned with the characterisation of old age in Beowulf and Cynewulf’s epilogue to Elene, alongside other texts; the concept of ‘wisdom’ acquired through experience is closely scrutinised, and the verbal and poetic elements of good judgment are elucidated. This thesis concludes that Old English poetry presents human ageing in a manner which encompasses a diverse range of experiences and interrelates with a multitude of wider conceptual frameworks. As such, the texts do not subscribe neatly to an ‘ages of man’ idea. Nonetheless, attention paid to the patterns of human ageing which do emerge from the poems can facilitate more sensitive and productive readings of the texts themselves. The thesis closes with some examples of passages which may be newly interpreted and appreciated in the light of how the life course is conceived across the Old English poetic corpus.

Abstract:
The “urban mysteries” make use of repetition as a much-developed narrative strategy: they intend to differentiate themselves while repeating. Our thesis shines light on the manners in which clichés and agreed scenarios are used and modified to fictionalize the big city, according to an acute awareness to new realities, first of which are the discovery of the proletariat, the fascination with modernity, and the fear of urban criminality. Our thesis presents a panoramic shot of the cultural horizons convened by the urban mysteries, a typology of the criminal characters, and the scrutiny of the construction of the reader by the novel – and of the novel by the reader. Abstract:
The present study proposes that there is an intrinsic relationship between the contemporary American short story cycle and the myth and ideology of the United States. I argue that the contemporary form of the story cycle has become the genre of choice for certain authors whose work explicitly challenges the dominant ideological discourses of Euroamerica and its underpinning mythologies. The five authors and the texts I discuss are Tim O’Brien and The Things They Carried, Julia Alvarez and How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, Gerald Vizenor and Landfill Meditation, Sherman Alexie and Ten Little Indians, and Thomas King and Green Grass, Running Water. In the thesis I address the interrelationship between ideology and mythology and this is the foundation for my examination of the way that these five disparate writers each uses the story cycle in his or her own distinctive way to challenge a dominant ideology and the mythology that underpins it.

Abstract:
Walter M. Miller, Jr.’s A Canticle for Leibowitz is a timeless story about apocalyptic cycles, conflicts and similarities between religion and science, religious ethics and secular ethics, sin and redemption, myth and preternatural innocence. Canticle is a very religious story about a monastery dedicated to preserving scientific knowledge from the time before nuclear war which devastated the world and reduced humanity to a pre-technological civilization. The Catholic Church and this monastery are portrayed as a bastion of civilization amidst barbarians and a light of faith amidst atheism. Unfortunately, humanity destroys the Earth once again, but Miller ends with two beacons of hope: a starship headed for the unknown to help humanity begin again and the preternaturally innocent Rachel who portends a future for similarly innocent human beings repopulating the Earth. Thus, faith ultimately triumphs over atheism even in the midst of almost total catastrophe.

Abstract:
Technologies that use cloud computing have increased considerably in the last decades. Computer services that we had in local devices have evolved to cloud services, resulting in applications such as online shopping stores, streaming platforms, or databases of large companies. In order to store and manage all the information that these types of services create, data centers were built and have been increasing in number and size in the last years. A big part of these databases is formed by server infrastructures, which are the devices that are responsible for storing and managing the data. Considerable research has been carried out to analyze the quantity of energy that servers consume and reduce it. What has been less considered is the environmental impact that servers have, not when they are operational but in the production phase (material gathering, transportation, assembly, etc.). A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) has been carried out to answer the research question that has been defined. The environmental impact of different stages is presented confirming the idea that other life cycle phases also have a big importance in the total environmental impact. Methods to reduce that impact are also explained.

Abstract:
The intention of this study was to investigate what are second cycle secondary students' favorite teaching techniques regarding learning reading comprehension in a second language inside the classroom. Another aim was to find out what was their favorite competency to practice during class hours. The best available method to pursue this study was a quantitative survey method. The questionnaire focused on different reading comprehension teaching techniques that are often used inside classrooms. Students had to position themselves in terms or enjoyment of certain teaching techniques used inside the classroom. Out of the 600 questionnaires sent out to the second cycle students of La Magdeleine High School, 227 responses were received. The results of the study indicated that students understand the values of doing the majority of reading exercises proposed inside the classroom, but were sometimes experiencing some form of anxiety, laziness and resistance with some of those activities. The principal conclusion is that teachers need to combine some of the students' favorite teaching ESL reading comprehension techniques and also use some techniques that aren't enjoyed as much by students and attempt to adapt them in a manner that would keep students motivated throughout those classes.<br>Le but de cette étude était de faire une analyse concernant les techniques d'enseignements favorites des étudiants fréquentant le deuxième cycle du secondaire dans le volet de compréhension de lecture de leur cours d'anglais langue seconde.

Nanduru, Pavan Kumar. "Non-Functional Requirement Modeling in the Early-Phase Software Product Life Cycle : A Systematic Literature Review and a Meta Model." Thesis, Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Institutionen för programvaruteknik, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:bth-13986.

Full text
Abstract:
Context. Non-functional requirements (NFRs) are important aspects which directly or indirectly determine whether a product is a success or a failure. It becomes essential to incorporate and understand them, before the software product enters the development phase. Despite the increasing emphasis put into NFR studies (namely; models and frameworks etc.) over the past few years, most industries prefer not use these techniques or to deal with NFRs later, in simpler manners. This could limit the efficiency of the development process. Integration of the existing NFR models/frameworks into the earlier phases of the product life cycle can provide a systematic approach to plan and anticipate NFRs for any software product. Objectives. This study aims to provide a generic meta model which acts as a compilation of the best NFR models/frameworks integrated into the early phases of the software product life cycle. This study also provides a real-world example which applies the conceptual meta model. Lastly, the meta model undergoes some limited validation to determine its relevance to what is being used and the extent of its practical use. Methods. Initially, a systematic literature review (snowballing) was conducted, to identify the different types of NFR models/frameworks. A comparative pro-con analysis was performed on the results of the SLR, which was the basis of the inclusion criteria for the meta model. The conceptual meta model was developed based on the International Software Product Management Association’s (ISPMA) definition of a product life cycle. Each phase of this meta model was imbedded with an NFR model/framework associated to the purpose of that phase and the results from the SLR. The application of the meta model was then demonstrated using a mobile phone example. Finally, the meta model was validated limitedly via an exploratory survey and the results were analyzed. Results. The meta model introduced can be used for the constructive inclusion of NFRs from product inception to product development. All phases required for the fulfillment of an NFR, are included. The overall positive feedback of the meta model is at 67%. Validations and assessments by practitioners helped determine to some extent that some industries are open to using the approach. Keeping in mind most of the available models on NFRs have not been validated, the NFR works used in this research have gone through some preliminary validation in this study. Conclusions. The study promotes the use of NFR models in the early phases of the software product life cycle. Some of the best modeling techniques were included based on results of literature analysis and their capability to fit into each phase. This study also analyzed the various insights of practitioners and researchers, justifying the significance of modeling, and the proposed technique. Possible extensions to this research were also mentioned.

Estrada, Gabriel S. "In nahui ollin, a cycle of four indigenous movements: Mexican Indian rights, oral traditions, sexualities, and new media." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/280008.

Full text
Abstract:
Pre-existing more hegemonic theories of Cultural Studies, Hispanic Studies, Media Arts, and Queer Studies, Nahuatl cosmologies offers an evolving political grounding for Native scholars. A Nahuatl cosmology of four directions represents a circle of masculinity, elders, femininity, and youth and forms the epistemology by which one can view Nahuatl and Xicana/o culture. In the east, Indigenous Rights directly relate to the hegemonic oppressions such as war, prison, and heterosexism that many Indigenous men face. Indigenous peoples fight those hegemonies with international legal concepts and through expressing their different epistemologies. In the north, the Caxcan oral tradition of my family contrasts with the homophobic and genocidal narratives more common in Chicano histories. I show how contemporary writers can rely more upon oral traditions and revisions to colonial records for their historical treatments of Indigenous peoples. To the west, postmodernism and feminism offer partial but incomplete analysis of Nahuatl cultures that Nahuatl women articulate in their own literatures and cosmological relations. In particular, Leslie Silko's stories are more than capable of critiquing postmodernism and ethnography, including those that describe Raramuri peoples. To the south, I demonstrate that gay Nahuatl and Xicano men can embody the social Malinche in keeping with Nahuatl beliefs. I use the idea of the gay social Malinche to critique Troyano's film, Latin Boys Go to Hell. Alternative internet sources tend to facilitate the ideas of the Social Malinche more. Together, all four movements comprise ollin, a social and cosmic movement that embraces different sexualities and generational changes in evolving aspects of dynamic social movements. Interweaving Western thought into the basic cosmology of Indigenous peoples, two-spirit social Malinches can open a path to political and social movement to improve their various relations.

Thesis, University of Kent, 2015. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/52949/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines interactions between science and the supernatural in Huysmans’s Durtal tetralogy. The protagonist, whose aesthetic and philosophical starting point is naturalism, converts to Catholicism. This unusual conversion reflects social upheavals contemporary with Huysmans’s cycle of novels. In the late nineteenth century, science, emerging as symbol of new hope and salvation for humanity, has in a sense replaced religion. The Durtal cycle catalogues the disorders generated by this replacement, and represents the creation of a new order more suited to Durtal’s persona, through deconstruction of existing codes and beliefs. Thus is shaped the intellectual and aesthetic matrix of the four novels. Pathology is at the intersection of the interactions between science and the supernatural, the various components of which constitute the subject of the three substantive chapters of the thesis. Figuring social degeneration and the creation of imaginary medical worlds founded on contamination, Huysmans’s text explores the boundaries between science and religion, thus offering a new cosmogony constructed around a concept of mystic substitution associated with Catholicism. Analysis of these textual explorations is followed by a study of the body and the soul as the two primary principles contributing to the conflicts articulated in Huysmans’s work. The conversion processes to which the body and the soul are subjected help to build renewed relationships between the material and the spiritual, the visible and the invisible. Writing thus appears as the result of an alchemical quest in which opposites can ultimately be reunited. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the development of the novel form, subject to so many contradictory influences. The pharmaceutical quality – in Derridean terms – of writing ends this crisis and restores the author’s authority, making of the Durtal tetralogy a work that is characterised at one and the same time by its naturalism and by its mysticism.

Abstract:
This study is a systematic review, with the objective of collecting evidences in the scientific literature, on the efficacy of the chemical integrators in the monitoring of the steam sterilization cycles. The search strategies were carried out in the MEDLINE, LILACS, CINAHL, DEDALUS, OVID, Cochrane and Academic Google data bases, through the combination of the terms sterilization (esterilização), chemical integrator (integrador químico), chemical indicator (indicador químico), biological indicator (indicador biológico), monitoring (monitoramento), and reagent (reagente). A search in the references tree of the selected articles was also carried out. The studies were selected without restrictions concerning publication date and language, with inclusion criteria of basic experimental comparative studies as for the performance of chemical indicators concerning the kinetics of the microbial death or the results obtained by means of biological indicators in steam sterilization cycles and, the exclusion of studies carried out with non–steam sterilization methods and studies that show the use of chemical indicators classes 1, 2, 3 and 4. A total of 7 studies were selected, the oldest from 1975 and the most recent from 2006; 6 of these studies compared chemical indicators to biological indicators and 1 study compared chemical indicators facing the microbial death kinetics curve of the stearothermophilus Bacillus. In relation to the origin of the studies, 1 is European and 6 are American, 1 of them being Brazilian. For the analyses and assessment of the studies, the following categorization was used: purpose, kind of study, sample units, sample, sterilizer used, procedures, data analyses, limitations, results, conclusions and comments. It was observed a trend of utilization of temperatures between 132º and 121º Celsius for the carrying out of the experiments was observed. The sample size varied from 1 to 47 indicators per cycle and the number of cycles reproduced from 1 to 12. There was no trend concerning the sterilizers used and the exposure time periods adopted. Four studies used chemical integrators in the experiments, and 2 of them used non-classified indicators, concurrently. By analyzing the results of the studies, we came to the conclusion that neither class 5 integrators nor biological indicators present 100% sensitive or 100% specific answers, as for the expected performance, and the class 5 chemical integrators and the biological indicators present variations of sensibility and resistance very close to each other, thus, at the moment they should not be classified in a effective to non-effective scale. The results obtained from integrators class 6 show a 100% turning inside the estimated time, suggesting that these integrators are effective for the monitoring of the steam cycles

From the conception that the strikes have a cyclical character, determination of complex and changeable, this study shows the weight that the variable pay - traditionally seen as the main determinant of strikes - has in determining the conflict at different times given. The salary issue is in Brazil and the world's central theme of labor relations, but is not, in most cases, the main determinant of the phenomenon striker. In the theories of collective action and strikes a set of variables competes in explanatory power. In Brazil, for example, from the inaugural 1978 strikes, most of the demands of national strikes have been directly or indirectly pay, it does not presume that only wages could explain the reduction or expansion in the number of strikes. Through a mapping of national and international discussion of the topic and theoretical and methodological assumptions that guide this work, we try to compare the weight given to variable pay relative to other explanatory variables such as inflation and unemployment in determining the conflict industrial. To achieve this purpose, is part of the main explanations of cycles European, American, Latin American and national strikes, the authors grouped according to year and location of the debate. But this general observation hides different approaches that establish causal relationships or no causation between the variables considered. Thus, the American model said the strikes fall when unemployment is rising which is not shown to be true for Europe. On this continent, the wages seem to figure in the background, sometimes as a result of unemployment, as shown by the Danish case. In Brazil noted that the wages figured in the foreground and led to the outbreak of strikes in 1978 does not mean that they explain, by itself, the expansion or reduction of labor.<br>Esta pesquisa visa aos estudos de greves e ação coletiva no Brasil.

The brähmaëa woman (priestess) in Ancient India is the main and intermediate agent between men and gods; being indispensable in rituals (fire sacrifices, both public and solemn). In the interactions between men, women of all social divisions are privileged as the agents of hospitality rites, i.e., in the exchange of gifts. Moreover, women are the object of most life-cycle rites, since they are performed before birth, during pregnancy, which involves the mother directly. Besides, women adapt the ideals of social and ritual actions, varying the norms, according to circumstances, and personal choices. The objective of this dissertation is to depict the ritual and social roles which are assigned to women in the society of Ancient India as they are culturally thought and created. In order to do so, we selected, presented and commented about the rites in which women are included, describing their functions, duties and rights; observing their socially and culturally established position in relation to the ritual and social realms, in the terms presented by the ritual and religious/law literature, divided in two major categories in the Indian tradition: Çruti e Småti, i.e., what has been heard and what is recalled. In this religious-historical attempt of analysis, we aim to answer, or at least, to point at and think over, the main problem we acknowledge: what is womens domain in Ancient India when it comes to ritual and social ideals as represented in the Sanskrit Literature.

Abstract:
Abstract The yellow stingray, Urobatis jamaicensis (Cuvier, 1816) is the most common elasmobranch encountered in the coastal waters of Southeast Florida. The objectives of the present research were to characterize the reproductive biology of a stable population distributed near the northern extent of the species range. Morphological analyses were conducted to determine the seasonal variation of macroscopic and microscopic development and structural organization of reproductive organs of male and female rays (excluding ovarian histology) during all stages of reproduction. This is the first study to document a seasonal biannual cycle for any elasmobranch, as well as, sexual synchrony with a protracted and overlapping periodicity of both reproductive cycles. In male rays, spermatogenesis corresponded with bimodal patterns of genital duct structure, sperm density and linear sperm aggregate formation and disaggregation. Combining data from individual females on: follicle development, ovulation, embryonic growth, and parturition identified the periodicities of the repetitive cycles with ovulation and parturition coinciding from January through April (Feb-Mar peak), and July through October (Aug-Sep peak). Basal crypts were continuously present and supplied the pre-ovulatory synthesis and secretion of histotroph. The basic structure of U. jamaicensis trophonemata was similar to other myliobatiform rays, however, two consecutive endometrial cycles of regeneration and regression were completed with extensive remodeling of glandular and vascular tissues that supplied nourishment and accommodated the respiratory demands of developing offspring. Additional support for concluding there is a biannual cycle was provided by differences in both fecundity and lateralization of uterine function between each reproductive cycle. Oviducal gland structure was reduced and modified with several zone-equivalents, however, secretory products were continuously available and a delicate encapsulating membrane was produced. The uterus was identified as a potential site of fertilization. Extensive levels of matrotrophic input were provided by a modified form of lipid histotrophy with an estimated increase in organic weight from uterine ova to term stage embryos of 4490%. This dissertation is separated into six chapters with (Chapter 1) representing a general introduction and (Chapter 2) describing the materials and methods used throughout the study. The following three chapters represent the bulk of the study, and are divided to characterize the reproductive biology of U. jamaicensis; (Chapter 3) periodicity of reproductive cycles, male anatomy and spermatogenesis, and fecundity patterns; (Chapter 4) uterine morphology, glandular and vascular patterns during the endometrial cycle, and matrotrophic relationships; and (Chapter 5) oviducal gland morphology, sperm distribution throughout the female reproductive tract, determine the occurrence of sperm storage, and describe alternative sites of fertilization. Extensively detailed text and figures further supporting the conclusion of a biannual cycle of reproduction in this animal is provided throughout this dissertation as well as condensed in summary form in the final section (Chapter 6).

Grubbs, Morris Allen. "Wendell Berry’s Cyclic Vision: Traditional Farming as Metaphor." TopSCHOLAR®, 1990. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1552.

Abstract:
Although Wendell Berry’s first book, a novel, appeared in 1960, he did not gain significant national attention until the publication of his nonfiction manifesto, The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture, in 1977. Since its publication, Berry has moved increasingly toward the prose of persuasion as he continues to sharpen his argument in support of a practical, continuous harmony between the human economy and Nature. His canon as a whole – the poems, essays, and novels – is an ongoing and thorough exploration of man’s use of and relationship to the land. Arguing that the health of a culture is linked to the health of its land, Berry focuses on agriculture, particularly the growing conflict between traditional farming (which espouses a harmonious cyclic vision) and modern agribusiness (which espouses a discordant linear vision). As a traditional farmer wedded to the land, Berry derives his ideas and images largely from his practical experiences and form his devotion to careful and responsible land stewardship. He also, in his nonfiction, turns to several agricultural (as well as a few literary) writers of the past and present to lend support to his arguments. Berry’s strong sense of Nature’s cycle is the basis for his imagery of departures and returns. As a crucial part of the cycle, death is prerequisite to life, and Berry shows the importance of understanding “that the land we live on and the lives we live are the gifts of death” (Home Economics 62). The power of Nature’s cycle is at once destructive and restorative; Berry teaches that by allying our human economy more with natural cyclic processes rather than with man-made linear – and ultimately destructive – ones, we and future generations can live with hope and assurance through the possibility of renewal. Traditional farming has taught Berry the concepts which inform his poems and essays (as well as his novels and short stories, which merit a separate study beyond the scope of this paper.) For example, he has learned, and continues to learn, the importance of understanding and acknowledging the primal, and ruling, character of a “place”; of looking to Nature for guidance, instruction, and justice; and of allying farming practices to Nature’s “Wheel” of birth, growth, maturity, death, and decay. This cycle and related motifs unify and connect his central themes, particularly death as a means of renewal. In Berry’s view, one of the cruxes in the agricultural crisis is that, whereas traditional farming seeks a natural balance between growth and decay, industrial farming, because of its pull toward mass production, stresses growth only (a linear inclination), which wears out the land and leads inevitably to infertility. Tracing our modern crisis to our past and to our present character and culture, Berry shows the ramifications of our abuse of Nature’s “gifts.”

In this thesis, the subject of interest is in treating, in an integrated way, two wellknown problems in the literature. This integration is referred in the literature as the integrated lot-sizing and cutting stock problem. The basic idea is to consider, simultaneously, the decisions related to both problems so as to capture the interdependency between these decisions in order to obtain a better global solution. We propose a mathematical model for a general integrated lot-sizing and cutting stock (GILSCS) problem. This model considers multiple dimensions of integration and enables us to classify the current literature, in terms of mathematical models, in this field. The main classification of the literature is organized around two types of integration. In a planning horizon which consists of multiple periods, the inventory provides a link between the periods. This integration across time periods constitutes the first type of integration. The general problem also considers the production in different levels: objects are fabricated or purchased and then, they are cut to produce the pieces which are then assembled as components in the production of final products. The integration between these production levels constitutes the second type of integration. The literature review also enables us to point out interesting areas for future research. The behavior of a solution to this type of problem, with three levels of production and several time periods, is studied considering the development of solution approaches that overcome the difficulties of the problem, which are the high number of cutting patterns, multi-level structures and the binary values of the setup variables. The solution methods proposed to the GILSCS problem are based on two known strategies from the literature which are used successfully to solve the problems separately, which are the column generation procedure and decomposition heuristics based on relax-and-fix procedure. These strategies and their variations are combined into an optimization package in a computational study with randomly generated data. A literature review, in terms of solution methods, to the integrated problem, is also presented. Other contributions of this thesis consist of proposing different mathematical models for the integrated problem combining alternative models for each one of the problems separately. In this study, the aim is to compare and evaluate, with an extensive computational study, the quality and the impact of these dfifferent formulations. Another study is an application of the integrated problem in a small furniture factory, in which specific constraints related to the industrial environment are addressed, such as, safety stock level constraints and saw cycles constraints. The solution obtained from the proposed model is compared to a simulation of the common practice in the company.<br>FAPESP: 2012/20631-2

Abstract:
This story cycle focuses on the members of the Ordoñez family of Castroville, California from the time of the first generation’s migration from Mexico in the 1950s to the most recent generation who moves out of the town in the 2000s. “The Ordoñez Pride” shows the entire family as they experience a miracle. Cecilia, the matriarch, receives a belated wedding ring that bursts into flame that doesn’t burn her, but everything else it comes into contact with. The flame also magically sparks hers and her husband’s sex life into overdrive and, late in life, they produce three more children, for a total of nine. Following this framing story, we see snapshots of all the other family members at life-changing moments. In “After the Revolution” we see Ray Ordoñez , the family patriarch, grow from a boy into a man, as he defends his sister from what he perceives to be the American ranch owner practicing the right to first night—a custom that was still practiced in rural Mexico in the twentieth century. Eventually, Ray migrates to California and begins his family, becomes assimilated into American culture, and reluctantly welcomes an American boy—his oldest daughter’s boyfriend—into his household.

Abstract:
Was ist momentan unbefriedigend erforscht?
