Abstract:

The synthesis and chemistry of some new cyclic diesters were investigated. The first part of the thesis is concerned with the study of new cyclic diesters derived from thiosulfurous acid, namely cyclic dialkoxy disulfides and their structural thionosulfite isomers. The second part focuses on the development of a new methodology for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates (carbonic acid diesters).<br>The synthesis of new cyclic dialkoxy-disulfides is described in Chapter 3. The bis 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane (1,4,7-TTCN) complexes of iron, cobalt, nickel and copper are reported in this work. Their properties have been examined using computer-controlled electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques. These TTCN complexes form readily, are unusually symmetrical and support electron transfer reactions at the metal center. The cobalt(II) complex is octahedral, low spin and symmetrical. Mercury (Hg) is a toxic heavy metal that poses significant human and environmental health risks. Mineral-associated Hg is the largest reservoir of Hg in the environment where it can account for nearly 60% of the global Hg mass inventory. Massive sulfide deposits in the Noranda mining camp, northwestern Québec, are mainly associated with extensive footwall alteration defined by intense chloritization and sericitization. However, Fe-carbonate alteration also occurs in proximity to some deposits.
