Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is providing a possible methodological solution to the valuation of cyclical.assets. International Valuation Standards introduce a brand new definition of property: the cyclical asset (International Valuation Standards Council 2017, IVS 105, p. 39 and p. 41). Among different property valuation methods, normally this kind of properties is appraised using income approach. In this group of methodology, the opinion of value is based on a proportional relationship between property value and rent. In the past years, a group of methods called cyclical capitalization has been proposed (d’Amato, 2003; d’Amato, 2013;d’Amato, 2015; d’Amato, 2017a; d’Amato 2017 b; d’Amato, 2017c). This method proposes an integration between property valuation and property market cycle. Design/methodology/approach Cyclical capitalization method is applied using a time series of property market rent of offices in prime location in the South Bank area in London. It consists of the determination of more than one all-risk yield to reproduce the property market cycle. Findings A comparison between the cyclical capitalization and two traditional capitalization rate shows how the proposed model is able to provide a stable opinion of value. Research limitations/implications The method may represent a contribution for the determination of the value of cyclical assets or for the mortgage lending value. Practical implications This paper provides the possibility to have a property valuation method less sensitive to upturn and downturn of the property market. Social implications The valuation based on cyclical capitalization are less sensitive to the upturn and the downturn of the market. Originality/value It is one of the first scientific paper addressing the problem of the determination of the value of cyclical assets.

Abstract:
The current study explored whether individuals with certain relationship dispositions were more likely to be involved in on-again/off-again (on-off) relationships. A sample of 211 currently dating participants in either on-off or non-cyclical relationships completed an online survey about relationship dispositions (e.g., attachment, implicit beliefs) and positive and negative aspects of relational quality (e.g., satisfaction, commitment, disillusionment). Participants in on-off relationships did not differ from those in non-cyclical relationships with regard to relationship dispositions. Relationship type, however, moderated certain associations between relationship dispositions and relationship qualities showing that the dispositions played a weaker role in relational quality for on-off partners (e.g., the association between growth belief and disillusionment was strong and negative for non-cyclical partners but nonsignificant for on-off partners). Although it was theoretically and practically important to investigate individual differences, interaction dynamics within dyads could be a more prominent factor in explaining on-off relationships.

Abstract:
This article investigated the relationship between output, money and interest rate, using wavelet tools for the period 1972–2017. Application of such tools is helpful in answering particularly two questions: first, what the strength and direction of the causal relationships between money, output and interest rate is, and second, whether the relationship is cyclical or anti-cyclical in nature. Findings from this article show that output and money are highly coherent in low, middle and high frequencies, and coherence increases while controlling for interest rate, with money growth as the leading variable most of the time across frequencies. Output and interest rate are equally highly coherent, mostly at high frequency and some bits of middle frequency; coherence increases with the control for money, and interest rate often times leads the relationship. Also, money and interest rate are coherent at low, middle and high frequencies with interest rate leading the relationship, and controlling the effect of output increases the coherence at some times and decreases at other times. There are observable evidences of both cyclical and anti-cyclical relationships among the variables. Policy decisions should be cautious of shortrun moves in order not to trigger undesired long-run outcomes since no difference is observed in the direction of causation over time–frequency. Abstract:
Abstract This paper focuses on the sluggish growth of world trade relative to income growth in recent years. We use a simple empirical strategy based on an error correction model to assess whether the global trade slowdown is structural or cyclical. An estimate of the relationship between trade and income in the past four decades reveals that the long-term trade elasticity rose sharply in the 1990s, but declined significantly in the 2000s, even before the global financial crisis. These results suggest that trade is growing slowly not only because of slow GDP growth, but also because of a structural change in the trade-GDP relationship in recent years. The available evidence suggests that a key driver of structural change over the 2000s is the slowing pace of international vertical specialization, which accounts for between one-quarter and one-half of the decline in import growth from the 1990s to the 2000s.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to help us understand the real estate cycle and offers an analysis using a vector auto regression (VAR) model. The authors study the key international cities of Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The authors find four key outcomes. One, the real estate cycle is generally different from the underlying business cycle in local markets for the cities studies. Two, the real estate cycle is more exaggerated in the construction and development areas than in rents and vacancies. Three, the vacancy cycle tends to lead the rental cycle. And four, new construction completions tend to peak when vacancy is also peaking. The authors believe that future research should try to help understand the linkages that drive these outcomes. For example, are rigidities in the local permit and construction markets responsible for the link between construction peaks and vacancy peaks? Design/methodology/approach – Real estate market cyclical dynamics and its estimation via VAR model offers an insightful set of practical and empirical models. It affirms a comprehensive theoretical underpinning for analysing the prime office and residential sectors of the capitol cities of Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong in the fast developing Asia region. Its unrestricted form also provides an effective and insightful way of modelling real estate market cyclical dynamics utilising only real estate market indicators, furnished by real estate market data providers. Findings – The office rental VAR model for Singapore (SOR), KL (KOR) and HK (HOR) show good fits. In the HOR model, rents and vacancies are negatively signed and significant for certain lagged relationships with other variables and with rents themselves. The office CV VAR model for Singapore (SOCV), KL (KOCV) and HK (HOCV) show good fits. In the HOCV model, capital values (CVs) and initial yields are negatively signed and significant for certain lagged relationships with other variables and with CVs themselves. Impulse response functions specified for seven years to mirror a medium-term real estate market cycle “die out” to zero for the stationary VAR models that are estimated for the endogenous variables. The accumulated responses asymptote to some non-zero constant. Practical implications – The VAR model offers a complete and meaningful dynamic system of solely real estate variables for international real estate investors and policy makers in decision making. Its unrestricted form offers an effective and insightful way of modelling real estate market cyclical dynamics utilising only real estate market indicators, which can be reliably provided by a dedicated real estate information and consultancy provider of international standing. Originality/value – The theoretical model offers a complete dynamic model system of the real estate space market, comprising a unique system of six linked equations that denote the relationship among supply, demand, construction, vacancy and rent over time, inclusive of price response slopes and lags. The VAR model enables the investigation of the effect of the lagged values of all the variables concerned. It also enables the explicit and rigorous quantitative forecasts of say rents and CVs when the rest of the variable can be forecasted beforehand.

Cyclical romantic relationships—those characterized by breaking up and getting back together or having on/off periods—are a frequent phenomenon in the emerging adult population. These dating relationships maintain some distinctions from other more stable relationships, including the ways that partners strive to sustain relationship health. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative inquiry was to increase in-depth understanding of how emerging adult dating partners’ relationship effort affects relationship transitions within cyclical dating relationships. Ten heterosexual emerging adult couples (10 men, 10 women) currently in cyclical dating relationships were interviewed about their experiences with relationship effort and maintenance. Participant interviews were analyzed according to the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method. Specific themes emerged from the data, focusing on how perceived individual effort in the relationship, perceived partner effort in the relationship, and specific maintenance behaviors couples used to sustain relational health affected couple decisions about relationship transitioning. Implications regarding relationship education and clinical intervention among cyclical emerging adult couples are discussed. Future research could focus on continued expansion of understanding when in relationship history cyclical patterns begin, and how partners navigate transitions when both perceive reduced relationship effort.

Cyclical relationships (where multiple break-ups and renewals have occurred) have been characterized as being in a state of “stable instability” (Vennum & Johnson, 2015), and emerging adulthood has been deemed a critical phase of relational development and learning, as well as a time marked by instability (Arnett 2000; 2007). While the research continues to expand on what we know about the concurrent and enduring risks for distress associated with relationship cycling, little is known about what change mechanisms/interventions may reduce these risks, or how helping professionals (therapists, relationship educators) can specifically assist young adults in cyclical relationships. After conducting five focus groups, researchers found specific factors that promote or detract from “decision-making resiliency”, or DMR. Specific points of intervention for professionals working with cyclical relationships to promote DMR are discussed, which included identity development, communication, power/control dynamics and intentionality. Building off of what is known about the nuances of cyclical relationships, this study aims to inform assessments and intervention(s) that would help bolster resilience and decision-making skills in cyclical couples (or couples who have slid into relationships and are, thus, at risk for cycling) in an effort to reduce further distress.

Abstract:

Patterns in, and quality of, early romantic relationships have been found to impact future relationship outcomes (Donnellan et al., 2005; Overbeek et al., 2007). Commitment and satisfaction with sacrifice have been cited as important constructs in relationship health and stability as they indicate investment in the relationship (Stanley & Markman, 1992; Rusbult, 1983). Little research has been done on the bi-directional relationship of these two constructs. Many authors indicate that commitment predicts sacrifice (e.g. Van Lange, Rusbult, et al., 1997), but others argue that sacrifice predicts subsequent commitment (e.g. Kelley, 1979). The purpose of this study was to explore the time-ordering of these constructs and whether a history of relationship breakup and renewal (termed cyclicality) moderated this relationship in an emerging adult population (n = 246). Using a cross-lagged model over three time points, the present study found support for a bi-directional relationship between commitment and satisfaction with sacrifice that was not moderated by a history of cyclicality. However, partners with a history of breakup and renewal did report lower dedication at Time 3, indicated by a group mean difference. Implications for theory, research, and intervention are discussed.

Drago, Valeria <1977&gt. "Cyclic alternating pattern in sleep and its relationship to creativity." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2011. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/4036/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background/Objectives: Sleep has been shown to enhance creativity, but the reason for this enhancement is not entirely known. There are several different physiological states associated with sleep. In addition to rapid (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, NREM sleep can be broken down into Stages (1-4) that are characterized by the degree of EEG slow wave activity. In addition, during NREM sleep there are transient but cyclic alternating patterns (CAP) of EEG activity and these CAPs can also be divided into three subtypes (A1-A3) according to speed of the EEG waves. Differences in CAP ratios have been previously linked to cognitive performances. The purpose of this study was to learn the relationship CAP activity during sleep and creativity. Methods: The participants were 8 healthy young adults (4 women), who underwent 3 consecutive nights of polysomnographic recording and took the Abbreviated Torrance Test for Adults (ATTA) on the 2 and 3rd mornings after the recordings. Results: There were positive correlations between Stage 1 of NREM sleep and some measures of creativity such as fluency (R= .797; p=.029) and flexibility ( R=.43; p=.002), between Stage 4 of Non-REM sleep and originality (R= .779; p=.034) and a global measure of figural creativity (R= .758; p=.040). There was also a negative correlation between REM sleep and originality (R= -.827; p= .042) . During NREM sleep the CAP rate, which in young people is primarily the A1 subtype, also correlated with originality (R= .765; p =.038). Conclusions: NREM sleep is associated with low levels of cortical arousal and low cortical arousal may enhance the ability of people to access to the remote associations that are critical for creative innovations. In addition, A1 CAP activity reflects frontal activity and the frontal lobes are important for divergent thinking, also a critical aspect of creativity.

MacDonell, Karen Loraine. "Relationship between cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase activation and smooth muscle relaxation by cyclic AMP and analogs." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30098.

Full text
Abstract:
It is generally held that adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) mediates smooth muscle relaxation by the activation of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA). This hypothesis was tested in two intact smooth muscle preparations, the rat vas deferens and the bovine coronary artery, using exogenously applied cAMP and cAMP analogs. After 30 minutes of incubation, N⁶,2'-0-dibutyryl-cAMP (dBu-cAMP) (1 - 100 μM) inhibited phenylephrine (PE)-induced tension generation in the rat vas deferens in a dose-dependent manner. This analog (10 μM) also activated the soluble fraction of PKA but did not activate the particulate fraction kinase. In contrast, 8-bromo-cAMP (8Br-cAMP) (10 -100 μM) did not have any significant effect on inhibition of PE-induced tension after 30 minutes of incubation but, at a concentration of 10 μM, significantly activated both the soluble and particulate fractions of PKA. The time course of activation of soluble PKA activation by 8Br-cAMP (10 μM) demonstrated that the kinase was significantly activated only after 30 minutes of exposure to the analog. In the bovine coronary artery, cAMP (10 - 100 μM) relaxed potassium-depolarized helical strips and significantly activated soluble PKA in a dose-dependent manner. dBu-cAMP (10 - 100 μM) affected neither tension nor soluble PKA activity. 8Br-cAMP (10 - 100 μM) did not affect the coronary artery tension but did activate soluble PKA. Both smooth muscle preparations were homogenized with charcoal prior to the determination of PKA activity in order to minimize artifactual assay results. As a further precaution, extracellularly associated cAMP and analogs were also washed from bovine coronary artery strips after the incubation period. These controls allowed for a valid assessment of PKA activity in the cyclic nucleotide-treated tissues. The results of the tension and kinase studies demonstrate a lack of correlation between activation of PKA and inhibition of rat vas deferens contraction or relaxation of bovine coronary artery. This does not support the hypothesis that the kinase is responsible for cAMP-induced relaxation of vascular and non-vascular smooth muscle. While the mechanism by which exogenous cAMP and specific analogs induce relaxation in some smooth muscle preparations remains unclear, it can be suggested that PKA activation is not necessarily required for the final functional effect.

Abstract:
This book studies how America's global financial power was created and shaped through its special relationship with Britain. The rise of global finance in the latter half of the twentieth century has long been understood as one chapter in a larger story about the postwar growth of the United States. This book challenges this popular narrative. Revealing the Anglo-American origins of financial globalization, the book sheds new light on Britain's hugely significant, but often overlooked, role in remaking international capitalism alongside America. Drawing from new archival research, the book questions the conventional view of international economic history as a series of cyclical transitions among hegemonic powers. Instead, it explores the longstanding interactive role of private and public financial institutions in Britain and the United States—most notably the close links between their financial markets, central banks, and monetary and fiscal policies. The book shows that America's unparalleled post-WWII financial power was facilitated, and in important ways constrained, by British capitalism, as the United States often had to work with and through British politicians, officials, and bankers to achieve its vision of a liberal economic order. Transatlantic integration and competition spurred the rise of the financial sector, an increased reliance on debt, a global easing of regulation, the ascendance of monetarism, and the transition to neoliberalism. From the gold standard to the recent global financial crisis and beyond, this book recasts the history of global finance through the prism of Anglo-American development.

Full text
Abstract:
The notion of ‘linguistic cycle’ has long been recognized as being relevant to the descriptions of many processes of language change. In a process known as grammaticalization, a given linguistic form loses its lexical meaning as well as some of its phonological content, and then gradually weakens, until it ultimately vanishes. This process of change becomes cyclic when the grammaticalized form is replaced by an innovative item, which can develop along exactly the same pathway. This volume unites thirteen chapters which address aspects of cyclical change from a wide variety of empirical perspectives. Couched in the generative framework, the contributions to this book bear witness to the rapidly growing interest among Chomskyan syntacticians in the phenomenon of grammaticalization. Topics touched upon include, but are not limited to, the diachrony of negation (in the context of, but also beyond, Jespersen’s Cycle), the syntax of determiners and pronominal clitics, the internal structure of wh-words and logical operators, cyclical changes in argument structure, and the relationship between morphology and syntax. One conclusion that transpires is that the correlation between cyclical change and grammaticalization—though undeniable—is perhaps less strong than sometimes assumed. Given its emphasis on empirical data description and theoretical analysis, Cycles in Language Change will be of interest to historical linguists working in formal and usage-based frameworks, and more broadly to scholars interested in language variation and change.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the collaborative, cyclical relationship between composition and instrument development as it follows the journey from technically extreme compositions, via the design and manufacture of the Howarth-Redgate oboe, to composers’ responses to this new instrument. The chapter takes as its starting point the extreme technical demands that result from the development of extended techniques—for example, the problems with the standard instrument’s keywork that stem from such compositional approaches. Then, through reference to Roger Redgate’s Ausgangspunkte and other works that sit at the limits of the playable, the chapter explores the idea of compositional risk-taking as a forum for collaboration. Following a discussion of the first compositional explorations of the redesigned oboe, the potential for further development of the instrument is considered.

Abstract:
The chapter shows that despite the adoption of Western norms in the official sphere, the populist criticism of this pro-European trajectory with its concomitant economic and administrative policies became increasingly central to domestic politics. The “culture wars” erupting in the late 1990s and early 2000s were rooted in the radicalization of conservativism, questioning the legitimacy of post-transition regimes. In turn, the left also underwent a profound reconfiguration, with the mainstream post-communists becoming fervent advocates of liberalization and the emerging new left, feminism, and environmentalism becoming increasingly anti-liberal. The book closes with an overview of the symbolic geographical debates on Europeanness, and also registers the growth of Euroskepticism after 2000. Critically engaging with the application of postcolonial theory in discussions on the region’s relationship to the West it also points to the cyclical occurrences of discourses on “catching up” and alienation which seem to indicate a longue durée regional pattern.

Abstract:
This book tells the story of William Blake’s literary reception in America and suggests that ideas about Blake’s poetry and personality helped shape mythopoeic visions of America from the abolitionists to the counterculture. It links high and low culture and covers poetry, music, theology, and the novel. American writers have turned to Blake in times of cataclysmic change, terror, and hope to rediscover the symbolic meaning of their country. Blake entered American society when slavery was rife and civil war threatened the fragile experiment of democracy. He found his moment in the mid-twentieth-century counterculture as left-wing Americans took refuge in the arts at a time of increasingly reactionary conservatism, vicious racism, pervasive sexism, dangerous nuclear competition, and an increasingly unpopular war in Vietnam, the fires of Orc raging against the systems of Urizen. Blake’s America, as a symbol of cyclical hope and despair, influenced many Americans who saw themselves as continuing the task of prophecy and vision. Blakean forms of bardic song, aphorism, prophecy, and lament became particularly relevant to a literary tradition which centralized the relationship between aspiration and experience. His interrogations of power and privilege, freedom and form resonated with Americans who repeatedly wrestled with the deep ironies of new world symbolism and sought to renew a Whitmanesque ideal of democracy through affection and openness towards alterity.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses use of the epic aristeia as a narrative element in Homer and the Cycle. At least four secure examples of aristeiai in the Cycle reveal a simpler structure than examples from Homer’s Iliad. This “cyclic” form of the aristeia typically features as champion a Trojan ally who eventually falls at the hands of a foremost Achaean warrior. Differences between cyclic and Iliadic aristeia-sequences reflect the persons and themes involved, but also bear an intimate relationship to the different narrative requirements of shorter poems. I argue further that the simpler cyclic form of the aristeia can be seen to underlie the more complicated and varied Homeric examples.

Abstract:
The latest climate change adaptation strategies adopted by local governments in Japan are discussed. A nationwide survey demonstrates several significant findings. While some prefectures and major cities have already begun to prepare adaptation strategies, most municipalities have yet to consider such strategies. This gap must be considered when studying the climate adaptation strategies of local governments in Japan, as municipal governments are crucial to the implementation of climate adaptation strategies due to high diversity in climate impacts and geographical conditions among municipalities within each prefecture in Japan. Key challenges for local governments in preparing adaptation strategies are the lack of expert knowledge and experience in the field of climate change adaptation, and compartmentalization of government bureaus. To address these issues, an interview study of six model prefectures in the SI-CAT (Social Implementation Program on Climate Change Adaptation Technology) project by the MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) was conducted in order to understand the details of challenges raised by adaptation among local governments in Japan. The survey results reveal that local government officials lack information regarding impact projections and tools for evaluating policy options, even though some of them recognize some of the impacts of climate change on rice crop, vegetable, and fruit production. In addition, different bureaus, such as agriculture, public health, and disaster prevention, focus on different outcomes of climate change due to their different missions. As this is the inherent nature of bureaucratic organizations, a new approach for encouraging collaboration among them is needed. The fact that most of the local governments in Japan have not yet assessed the local impacts of climate change, an effort that would lay the groundwork for preparing adaptation strategies, suggests the importance of cyclical co-design that facilitates the relationship between climatic technology such as climate models and impact assessment and local governments’ needs so that the technology developments clarify the needs of local government, while those needs in turn nurture the seeds of technology.

Abstract:
From a corpus of Greek epics known in antiquity as the “Epic Cycle,” six poems dealt with the same Trojan War mythology as the Homeric poems. Though they are now lost, these poems were much read and much discussed in ancient times, not only for their content but for their mysterious relationship with the more famous works attributed to Homer. This study shows that these lost poems belonged, compositionally, to essentially the same tradition as the Homeric poems. It demonstrates that various compositional devices well-known from the Homeric epics were also fundamental to the narrative construction of these later works. Yet while the “cyclic” poets constructed their works using the same traditional devices as Homer, they used these to different ends and with different results. The essential difference between cyclic and Homeric epics lies not in the fundamental building blocks from which they are constructed, but in the scale of these components relative to the overall construction of poems. This sheds important light on the early history of epic as a genre, since it is likely that these devices originally developed to provide large-scale structure to shorter poems and have been put to quite different use in the composition of the monumental Homeric epics. This study includes many new suggestions about the overall form of lost cyclic epics and about the meaning and context of the few surviving verse fragments.

Abstract:
This chapter systematically surveys conceptual frameworks (models) that have been suggested to identify similarities between World Englishes and to classify them accordingly. The earliest suggestions along these lines were static models, which either worked out historically based relationships between national varieties, having branched off in a family-tree-like manner, or classified countries based on whether English is used as a native, second or foreign language in them. Other early categorizations emphasized the global, national or regional outreach of varieties (in “hub-and-spoke” models) or variety types based on sociolinguistic settings in communities and their resulting linguistic properties. In contrast, recent models emphasize the evolutionary or even cyclic character of varieties; these include Trudgill’s deterministic theory and, very widely accepted nowadays, Schneider’s Dynamic Model, which is broadly outlined, including a brief discussion of some applications of and reactions to it.

The construction process employs design, theory and building into a seamless relationship. Construction is a creative act. Technology is a tool used to reinforce design ideas- not weaken them. Our studio offers challenging social issues expressed through the reality of construction. There is a long legacy of learning through building- from the cathedral guilds to Taliesin, Arcosanti and the Jersey Devil. Learning through building offers a cyclical way to view technology and design simultaneously. This leads to a practical approach where theory is vital for it informs the entire process.

Abstract:
The Whole Skin Locomotion (WSL) robotic platform is a novel biologically inspired robot that uses a fundamentally different locomotion strategy than other robots. Its motion is similar to the cytoplasmic streaming action seen in single celled organisms such as the amoeba. The robot is composed of a closed volume, fluid filled skin which generally takes the shape of an elongated torus. When in motion the outer skin is used as the traction surface. It is actuated by embedded smart material rings which undergo cyclical contractions and relaxations, generating an everting motion in the torroidially shaped skin. To better understand, design, and optimize this mechanism, it is necessary to have a model of the skin, fluid, and actuators and their interactions with the environment. This paper details the first steps in the development of a non-linear finite element (FE) model which will allow us to study these interactions and predict the shape and motion of the robot under various actuation strategies. A simple membrane element model is introduced from literature and is modified such that an incremental loading strategy can be employed. Finally, an underlying physical mechanism is introduced which could possibly describe the relationship between the shape of and pressure within the membrane skin and motion of the whole skin locomotion robot.

Abstract:
Ecology is proving to be an innovative source for design principles. Studies have examined how ecological principles can enhance sustainability in industrial networks. Ecologically-inspired manufacturing networks tend to focus on supporting symbiotic relationship formation, creating a cyclical flow structure that has been shown to result in efficiency and resource consumption improvements. Despite successes, bio-inspired manufacturing networks still fail to accurately mimic ecosystem cycling. The roles of exclusive actors and specialized predators in achieving the high cycling characteristic of ecosystems is investigated here. Exclusive actors participate in the network as either only a consumer (predator) or only a producer (prey). Specialized predators consume only one producer inside the system boundary. The populations of these special actors in manufacturing networks versus ecological food webs speaks to the potential influence these roles have on the cycling the network achieves. The trends shown here suggest less exclusivity is necessary for achieving ecologically-strong network cycling.

Abstract:
This project was developed as an attempt to assess the relationship between different morphogenetic processes, in particular, those of fringe belt formation as described by M.R.G. Conzen (1960) and Whitehand (2001), and of centrality and compactness as described by Hillier (1999; 2002). Different approaches’ focus on different elements of the city has made it difficult to establish exactly how these processes interact or whether they are simply different facets of development reflecting wider socio-economic factors. To address this issue, a visual, chronological timeline of Limassol’s development was constructed along with a narrative of the socio-economic context of its development. The complexity of cities, however, makes static visualisations across time difficult to read and assess alongside textual narratives. We therefore took the step of developing an animation of land use and configurational analyses of Limassol, in order bring to life the diachronic analysis of the city and shed light on its generative mechanisms. The video presented here shows that the relationship between the processes mentioned above is much stronger and more complex than previously thought. The related paper explores in more detail the links between fringe belt formation as a cyclical process of peripheral development and centrality as a recurring process of minimisation of gains in distance. The project’s outcomes clearly show that composite methods of visualisations are an analytical opportunity still little exploited within urban morphology. References Conzen, M.R.G., 1960. Abstract:
Abstract The Nigeria oil and gas industry is a highly capital intensive market. with possibility of high profit or great losses. Oil price trends over the last 3 decades shows cyclical and relatively high volatility. This is due to geopolitical and economic factors including dollar value, governments and organizations (like OPEC's actions), that influence global supply and demand. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 crises, public health became a key factor influencing oil price (due to its severe adverse impact on demand). Studies have shown that even an increase in production volumes will not be able to bring about profitability in the industry. Clearly, management of costs including a lean supply chain that ensures that material/services for production are available at the right price and time is critical for the profitability of future oil and gas supply. Oil producing firms require an optimum supply level of material and services to competitively deliver its end-product. This paper discusses the effect of LEAN supply chain management on the profitability of oil & gas firms in Nigeria. It also appraises the relationship between lean processes and operational efficiency of oil and gas producing companies. Using quantitative and descriptive research design methods, an online survey has been used to gather information from respondents from different oil and gas companies. Secondary data was also obtained from annual reports of relevant companies to show their crude oil production levels vis-à-vis profitability over a five-year period. Based on analysis of information received from the research conducted, it has been recommended that better supply related collaboration between the organizations in the industry is necessary for sustained profitability. Companies need to link upstream and downstream flows of products, services and information to help reduce costs, wastages and ensure profitability. In, line with this, steps have been proferred to establish lean processes for organization. The researcher concludes that established industry-wide lean supply chain management processes and practices and collaboration e critical to competiveness and sustainable profitability in the oil and gas industry.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the practical and theoretical issue of the formation and realization of a system of conscious self-regulation of professional activity. The purpose of the study is to identify patterns of development of the procedural subsystem of self-regulation of the surgeon’s activities at different stages of his professionalization. The choice of goal is due to the fact that the study of the patterns the formation of a system of self-regulation of professional activity is given insufficient attention against the background of a large number of psychological works devoted to the study of various aspects of self-regulation. The methodological basis of this research is the psychological theory of conscious self-regulation, developed by O. A. Konopkin, his students and followers. Self-regulation is defined as a structurallevel metasystem, reflecting the level of formation of general and special regulatory resources and capabilities. The research is identified the qualitative, quantitative and structural patterns of development of the procedural subsystem of self-regulation of activity. It is shown that structural transformations determine the essence of the development of the procedural subsystem of self-regulation. The cyclical development of the procedural subsystem of self-regulation is revealed, which indicates a change in the leading trends in its formation and realization. A critical or transitional point in the development of the procedural subsystem of self-regulation of the surgeon’s activity, which falls on the professional experience of 20 years, is determined. The constructive, stagnation and destructive trends in the development of the procedural subsystem of self-regulation of the surgeon’s activity are analyzed. It is defined that in the course of constructive development there is an active growth of the components of the procedural subsystem of self-regulation and the formation of its effective structure. In the course of stagnation and destructive development, the growth of the components of the self-regulation subsystem stabilizes and decreases, their differentiation increases and the destruction of its structure begins. The relationship between the development of the procedural subsystem of self-regulation and the effectiveness of the surgeon’s professional activity is fixed.

Full text
Abstract:
The support structure beneath railroad tracks may appear to be a simple layering of various materials, but rather, it is a complex system working together to distribute the load of passing trains. It is paramount that this structure maintain its designed support properties not only to preserve component life expectancy but to maintain the safety of the trains traveling over the rails. During normal operations, track geometry, as evaluated through the standard deviation of various track geometry channels, tends to degrade over time. This is a byproduct of the cyclical loading applied to the track structure by passing trains causing the slow compacting and settling of the ballast and sub-structure. Assuming all variables are held constant, a regular maintenance schedule should bring track geometry back into acceptable limits, but this is generally not the case in real life. In the event that the subgrade cannot support and distribute the pressure caused from the passing train successfully, accelerated track geometry degradation can take place. This accelerated degradation can be further increased when there exists a transition between support strengths which can lead to increased dynamic loading. A case study in sub-structure pressure management has been devised and applied to a high speed rail line. During a recent track renewal operation where track was maintained down to the subgrade, pressure transducers were placed within the sub-grade layer under both the left and right rails, inside and outside of track regions where sub-structure management has been applied. This test segment was monitored over a period of one year with both pressure and track geometry data being recorded at regular intervals. This paper will explore the relationship between sub-structure pressure and local track geometry measurements as it relates to the monitored test segment with a region of known subgrade management transition. Numerous numerical techniques will be applied to understand the change over time of the subgrade pressure distribution capability (measured as pressure beneath the rail) and the degradation of various track geometry channels individually over time. Correlation of the pressure data to track geometry data will also be done using both raw data and data processed using numerical techniques. This will lead to an understanding of how the quality of the track support structure, specifically the track support structure’s ability to distribute pressure, can affect the magnitude and degradation rates of various track geometry channels.
