Baker, Simon Charles. "The biogeochemical cycling of sulphur compounds." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1992. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/110339/.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of a particular atom, compound or group of compounds being transformed by geochemical, anthropogenic and biological processes on a global scale is not new: the cycling of water and carbon and nitrogen have been recognised in biology and geography. A similar cycle can be constructed for sulphur, which at the most basic level is much like that of carbon. The primary difference is that unlike carbon dioxide (C02) and photosynthesis, biological agents do not play as great a part in the removal of sulphur compounds from the atmosphere to a terrestrial form.

In the final decade of the nineteenth-century, when New Zealand women began riding the bicycle, they excited intense public debate about contemporary middle-class ideals of femininity. The research question posed is: "why did women's cycling provoke such a strong outcry?" In the 1880s, two cycling clubs formed in New Orleans—the New Orleans Bicycle Club in 1881 and the Louisiana Cycling Club in 1887. These clubs were institutions of Victorian middle class culture that, like other athletic clubs, arose from the conditions of urban modernity and Victorian class anxieties. The NOBC, like other American cycling clubs, conformed to Victorian values of order and respectability. The attitudes and activities of the LCC, whose membership was younger, reflected instead a counter-Victorian ethos. This paper examines these two clubs in the context of late Victorian culture

The effective stress ratio at the initiation of contractive deformation (CSR) in extension is less than that in compression.
