Cyrtomenus includes seven species arranged in two subgenera and belongs to the most diverse subfamily of burrower bugs, Cydninae. The species present polyphagous habits, and at least two species are considered crop pests. We conduct a phylogenetic analysis based on morphological characters and two weighting schemes to test its monophyly and the validation of the included subgenera, providing for the first time a phylogenetic hypothesis for the genus. This burrower bug resembles species of two Sehirinae genera, i.e. Ochetostethus Fieber, 1860 and Ochetostethomorpha Schumacher, 1913, in its dorsal body habitus. Cydninae is the largest subfamily among burrower bugs all around the world and for Brazil the genera Cyrtomenus, Dallasiellus, Ectinopus, Melanaethus, Onalips, Pangaeus, Prolobodes and Tominotus were reported with a total of 39 species, so far. Basing on the material of nine entomological collections, we updated the list to 47 species including new records and a new species, Tominotus ondulatus sp. nov. described from Restinga, Rio Grande do Sul. Distribution maps and photos of dorsal habits for several species are also provided.

Abstract:
The adult exocrine gland secretions of three cydnid species, Rhytidoporus indentatus Uhler, Pangaeus bilineatus (Say), and Cyrtomenus ciliatus (Palisot de Beauvois), were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. All species produced E-2-octenal and n-tridecane as major secretory components. Only C. ciliatus yielded 4-oxo-E-2-hexenal whereas n-undecane was unique to R. indentatus. 2-Decenal, pentadecane, and hexadecane were also identified from these cydnids.
