Abstract:
The effects of porous sleeve properties on the flow stability in rotating cylinders are numerically investigated in this study. To this end, three-dimensional momentum equations for the porous and fluid layers are formulated separately in terms of velocity and vorticity. These equations are then numerically solved over a wide range of parameters (10−2 ≤ Da ≤ 10−5, 2000 ≤ Ta ≤ 5000) to determine the critical Taylor number for the onset of flow instability for various porous sleeve properties. Conventional manufacturing of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) tubes requires high energy consumption, long curing hours, large systems, and manual labor. In this study, we propose a design for an automated apparatus to continuously produce high performance CFRP composite tubes which leverage frontal polymerization chemistry, innovations in tooling, and oven design. Abstract:
This paper discusses a new type of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) suppression devices, the blade Henning device, named after one of the primary inventors, Dean Henning. It consists of four blades, 90-degree apart, on a circular shaped sleeve. Tests of these devices on a flexible cylinder in uniform flows have been conducted. The results indicate that the amount of suppression required with this type of apparatus to effectively mitigate VIV is significantly reduced.
