Hydraulic cylinder seal performance is studied experimentally and theoretically. The seal performance is discussed in terms of friction force and oil leakage, which are due to the oil film build-up in the seal contact. The theoretical analysis is based both on calculated and measured contact pressure distributions. The compressibility of seal materials is determined experimentally, and it is shown that the compressibility is a pressure dependent material property. Working with a three-dimensional shape that adjusts light seemed exciting. Venetian blinds became a basis and source of inspiration in my project. What is a Venetian blind? I arrived at the definition ”a surface of angleble pieces for sun adjustment”. From that simplified meaning I started making sketches of what an alternative model could look like. My sun shield consists of manual adjustable cylinders. The idea is that every adjustable piece, besides blocking sunlight, also can be a jig-saw-piece. Development of an algorithm to perform the structural analysis and optimal sizing of buckling resistant, imperfect, anisotropic ring-stiffened cylinders subjected to axial compression, torsion, and internal pressure is presented. The structure is modeled as a branched shell. A nonlinear axisymmetric prebuckling equilibrium state is assumed which is amenable to exact solution within each branch. Buckling displacements are represented by a Fourier series in the circumferential coordinate and finite elements in the axial or radial coordinate.
