Abstract:
Purpose Organizational cynicism is a growing trend in contemporary organizations. However, its impact on employee performance remains understudied. The purpose of this study is to address this gap by investigating the effect of three dimensions of organizational cynicism (cognitive, affective and behavioral cynicisms) on employee performance. The study also investigates the moderating effect of employee engagement on the relationship between three types of organizational cynicism and employee performance. Design/methodology/approach Primary data are collected through questionnaire from employees (N = 200) of various health organizations in Pakistan by using a convenient sampling technique. Hierarchal multiple regression models are used by using SPSS. Findings The findings reveal that all three types of organizational cynicism (i.e. cognitive cynicism, affective cynicism and behavioral cynicism) have a significant negative relationship with employee performance, while employee engagement moderates this relationship. Moreover, the findings indicate that the majority of respondents are not happy with their organizations. They have the feeling that their organizations are not fulfilling their promises, in fact, are betraying them in different ways. This breach of contract becomes the reason for organizational cynicism among employees and negatively affects their performance at work. Research limitations/implications The study has a large population size and it is quite difficult to address the whole population and collect data from a large sample because of time and limited budget. Practical/implications The organizational culture can mitigate the negative effect of organizational cynicism and enhance performance by promoting employee engagement. The study helps psychologists to understand employees’ attitudes and improve personnel selection to ensure they recruit the right people. Openness, honesty and early communication can increase predictability and controllability of future events. Social implications The job insecurity and lack of adequate compensation are assertive factors towards low productivity and negative attitude toward organization. Originality/value According to the researchers’ best knowledge, only few studies tried to investigate the relationship between organizational cynicism and employee performance by using the moderating effect of employee engagement. Therefore, it will be a good contribution in existing literature to understand consequences of cynicisms.

Abstract:
Historically, cynicism as a philosophical movement started and soared in the Hellenistic period. Disquisition on cynicism concerning architecture and architectural philosophy has been relatively neglected. This article addresses cynicism, delving into the philosophy of the cynics’ lifestyle and beliefs vis-à-vis less is more (minimalism), which was an epigram adopted by Mies Van Der Rohe in his architectural designs and buildings. Standing on the shoulder of simplicity, as the common denominator between cynicism and minimalism, the authors create an intercourse between philosophy and architecture through the appraisal of the philosophy of the Cynics and the architectural works of Mies Van Der Rohe. This further buttresses the innate need for continual interdisciplinary research works to unearth and expound more interesting synergy in human architectural and philosophical experiences.

Abstract:
Cynicism styles itself as the answer to the mental suffering produced by disillusionment, disappointment, and despair. It seeks to avoid them by exposing to ridicule naive idealism or treacherous hope. Modern cynics avoid the vulnerability produced by high ideals, just as their ancient counterparts eschewed dependence on all but the most essential of material needs. The philosophical tradition of the Cynics begins with the Ancients, including Diogenes and Lucian, but has found contemporary valence in the work of cultural theorists such as Peter Sloterdijk. This article uses theories of cynicism to analyze postcolonial disappointment in Irish modernism. It argues that in the “ambi-colonial” conditions of early-twentieth-century Ireland, the metropolitan surety of and suaveness of a cynical attitude is available but precarious. We therefore find a recursive cynicism that often turns upon itself, finding the self-distancing and critical sure-footedness of modern, urbane cynicism a stance that itself should be treated with cynical scepticism. The essay detects this recursive cynicism in a number of literary works of post-independence Ireland, concluding with an extended consideration of W. B. Yeats’s great poem of civilizational precarity, “Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen.”

Abstract:
This article delves into the concept of cynicism, examining it as a philosophical movement and exploring its role in shaping a critically reflective worldview. It conducts a theoretical analysis of the historical origins of cynicism, focusing on the ancient Cynics and their core principles of life. Additionally, the article investigates the influence of cynicism on contemporary society. The article provides a comprehensive description of the fundamental concepts of cynicism. These include the rejection of material possessions, the pursuit of a simple lifestyle, and skepticism towards social hierarchies. Moreover, it underscores cynicism as a tool for critically questioning societal norms, cultural conventions, and moral values. By engaging in critical analysis and reflection, cynicism has the potential to facilitate the construction of a worldview rooted in skepticism and examination. The authors emphasize the significance of cynicism as a critically reflective form of worldview that encourages communities to ask probing questions, analyze various issues, and seek ways to address them. By challenging established norms, cynicism serves as a catalyst for societal progress. It inspires individuals and communities to engage in critical thinking, enabling them to explore alternative paths and foster a more equitable and inclusive society. In conclusion, the article highlights the transformative power of cynicism in driving societal advancements. By nurturing a critically reflective worldview that embraces continuous questioning, growth, and the pursuit of a better future, cynicism can contribute to positive social change. It encourages individuals and communities to challenge the status quo, critically evaluate existing systems, and actively seek improvements for a more just and inclusive society.

Abstract:
We call for a further appreciation of the versatility of concepts and methods that increase the breadth and diversity of work on law and social science. We make our point with a review of legal cynicism. Legal cynicism's value, like other important concepts, lies in its versatility as well as its capacity for replication. Several classic works introduced legal cynicism, but Sampson & Bartusch named it. Kirk & Papachristos used a cultural framework to broaden it and added essential measures of perceived unresponsiveness and incapacity of police to ensure neighborhood safety and security. A structural theory of legal cynicism explains minority residents’ skepticism of, and desperate reliance on, police in the absence of alternative sources of safety. Historical and ethnographic studies play especially important roles in broadening the versatility of legal cynicism for the study of crime and responses to it.

Abstract:
Pagrindiniai žodžiai: cinizmas, kasdienybė, demaskavimas, Sloterdijkas, Sverdiolas.EVERYDAY OBSCURE CYNICISMMintautas GutauskasSummaryThe article deals with the structures of contemporary everyday cynicism. It discusses the question of relevant approach to the cynicism as well. Historical and structural aspects are invoked in the analysis of cynicism. The investigation of historical aspect shows that cynical reduction of culture into nature and unmasking in the form of joke can be derived from the ancient Cynics, and the investigation of structural aspect, in turn, focuses on constitution of cynical realism. The author asserts that cynical realism is established in the perspective of two truths: the first truth is unrealistic nomos, the area of ideals and purposes, the second truth is purely realistic, that is to say, physis or reality which is constituted by means of reduction and unmasking. Closer examination of contemporary cynicism reveals that direct opposite of cynicism – the naivety – revived in contemporary everyday cynicism: contemporary cynic naively believes not in ideals or values and all that, but in procedure of unmasking itself. Finally, the analysis shows how the mocking cynicism turns into unhappy consciousness. Keywords: cynicism, everydayness, unmasking, Sloterdijk, Sverdiolas.

Smaligo, Nicholas. "Enlightenment and Cynicism." OpenSIUC, 2010. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/369.

Abstract:
The Enlightenment was funded by a utopian hope that increased knowledge of nature as a mechanism could create the conditions for lasting peace and widespread happiness. The twentieth century, however, has been marked by catastrophes hitherto beyond imagination. This thesis examines two critiques of enlightenment that suggest this development is not accidental either to the concept of enlightenment or to the course it has taken in modern Western societies. The development in question follows from tendencies within enlightenment itself. I provide an exegetical account of Horkheimer and Adorno's analysis, in their collaborative work Dialectic of Enlightenment, of the regressive moment in enlightenment, which, for them, is owed to the entanglement of rationality and domination. Next, I examine Peter Sloterdijk's analysis, in Critique of Cynical Reason, of the ambivalent social reception of enlightenment that results in the phenomenon of modern cynicism, which must be contrasted with its ancient namesake that I render, following the translation of Sloterdijk, as "kynicism". In each of these works the way forward for enlightenment hinges upon cultivating a relationship between nature and the subject that is not based on dominating opposition: nature as a mechanism for human purposes or as the suppressed inner nature of the subject. Horkheimer and Adorno's solution is the recovery of reflection on nature within the subject. I show that this is insufficient to meet the challenges posed by modern cynicism that Sloterdijk reveals to be a late development of enlightenment. It is for this reason that Sloterdijk asks us to recall the legacy of Diogenes of Sinope. Sloterdijk finds in Diogenes a critical consciousness that resists the "melancholic stagnation" of cynical society and retains the utopian spirit of enlightenment.

Abstract:
Stort Tack!
Purpose: The purpose with this study is to create an understanding in how widespread dissatisfaction is in worklife. By studying the psychological contract we want to understand how dissatisfaction appears when the contract has been broken. Methodology: The study has a qualitative and abductive approach. We have collected our empirical data through qualitative interviews and forms. Theoretical perspectives: Our theoretical material has been grounded in theories about the psychological contract, organizational cynicism and communication. These three areas have we connected with our empirical data. Empirical foundations: We have done three interviews with three people with leading position at different companies to get their view on the matter of dissatisfaction. As a complement to the interviews we have done questionnaire studies to understand the perspective of the employees. Conclusion: The result of the study has shown us that dissatisfaction is a widespread problem in the workplaces. We argue that the employer does not give enough attention to this type of matter and that they should. Our results show us that the employee have more expectations, so called psychological contracts, than the employer is aware of. Also we have seen that the employer’s way to act has been a strong contributor to the employee’s dissatisfaction, which therefor needs to be considered. Finally we can establish that the employers should work more active with psychological contract and give more attention to dissatisfaction.   Thank you!

Abstract:
In terms of the media, there are various means of influencing the audience by informing and conditioning its attitude or forming its mood. Amongst these means, attention should be paid to scepticism and cynicism, leading to destructive, critical attitude, doubt or denial. Cynicism is the questioning or denial of what is generally accepted or accepted by the majority and some particular group. The text emphasizes the dual possible moral evaluation of cynicism: on the one hand, the justifiability and usefulness of cynicism in one situation, on the other hand, its destructive and misleading effect in another, weakening support for social and moral order. The representation of the unveiling of the monument of Gunārs Astra in the media on 20 January 2022 is analysed here as a case of misleading strategic communication.

Abstract:
Work-from-home arrangements became the best response to the current world situation at the beginning of 2020; with the increase of employees partaking in this arrangement, along with this shift, inevitable effects on the workers’ perceived performance might be observed. This study was intended to make relevant and credible contributions in the analysis of work performance in the Philippine workforce. Thirty Filipino work-from-home online workers answered a self-administered online questionnaire with 73 questions (9 latent variables and 52 indicators). Structural equation modeling was utilized to analyze the variables and identified workload (W), employee well-being (EW), and organizational culture (OC) to have a substantial direct effect on job demands (JD), job resources significantly affected cynicism (C) and job demands directly affect both exhaustion (EX) and cynicism (C). Moreover, exhaustion was found to have a significant effect on perceived work performance (WP). Interestingly, job demands (JD) have no significant impact on job resources (JR). Recommendations provided in this study are expected to provide a reasonable scientific basis to improve the current work-from-home scheme in the Philippine workforce.

Abstract:
The paper investigates the effect of social axioms on the relationship between basic psychological needs and subjective well-being in two groups of adults residing in two different cultural contexts, Romania and the UK. Participants aged 18 to 60 completed an online survey between 22 May 2019 and 1 March 2021. A sample of 425 Romanian participants (M = 40.34, SD = 11.235) answered a questionnaire written in the Romanian language, and 137 English-speaking participants (M = 28.24, SD = 10.741) responded to the same questionnaire but written in the English language. In this study, we used the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale – General Measure (Chen et al., 2015), which measured the basic psychological needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence; the Social Axioms Survey II (Leung et al., 2012), which measured social axioms; the 5-item World Health Organization Well-Being Index, WHO-5 (1998), which measured the subjective well-being. Analyzing the relationships between social axioms, basic psychological needs, and well-being, we obtained significant results only for the variable social cynicism. We found that social cynicism mediates the relationship between basic psychological needs and subjective well-being for both participants. Also, we found that the reward for application acts as a mediator but only for English-speaking participants.

Abstract:
Burnout syndrome refers to exhaustion, cynicism and inefficiency. It can occur at work or in an academic environment. The stressful lifestyle of students and the risk of anxiety, depression and sleep disorders due to the high academic demand are risk factors for burnout syndrome. As a result of the high prevalence of burnout syndrome, there is a high risk of the use of psicoestimulantes or known as smart drugs in 13.1%. Among the most consumed psychostimulants without a medical prescription, modafinil and with a medical prescription, methylphenidate. Within the studied sample, 84.5% presented high or very high levels of exhaustion. 80% of the subjects who consume modafinil use it with the purpose to improve their academic performance and increase their concentration, however the drug is indicated in drowsiness, sleep disorders. About 100% of those who consume methylphenidate do so by medical prescription.

Abstract:
Despite evidence of their positive impacts, United Nations peacekeeping operations continue to face budget cuts, cynicism in the political arena and concern over personnel physical safety. This context underpins the global and regional trends in multilateral peace operations in 2019. This SIPRI Fact Sheet gives a snapshot of multilateral peace operations in 2019, with statistics on personnel, country contributions and fatalities for operations conducted by the UN, regional organizations or alliances, and ad hoc coalitions of states. Global and regional trends in 2019 follow developments from recent years, including the downward trends associated with the reductions and closures of many UN peace operations since 2015. Sub-Saharan Africa continues to host the majority of operations and personnel, although these numbers have decreased, while the Middle East and North Africa is drawing attention for increasing numbers of operations and personnel. Hostile death rates for 2019 are largely attributed to the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali, the deadliest operation since its establishment in 2013, with all other operations demonstrating relatively low numbers of fatalities.

Abstract:
In this article the author analyzes in detail the “holiday” speeches by the former president of the russian federation dmitry medvedev and the current president vladimir putin devoted to the day of national unity of russia on November 4, 2022, in which politicians justify the war, call it sacred, a struggle between Good and Evil and predict their own victory. With the help of methods of critical analysis, the refutation of historical myths, the denial, an exposure and the generalization, the falsity and cynicism of the statements made regarding the expediency and possibility of geopolitical changes are demonstrated. The civilizational war of the russian federation against the Western democratic world, which began with aggression against the disobedience of neighboring Ukraine, which chose the Western vector of development, is gaining momentum. It would seem that in the 21st century global conflicts over territories are almost impossible, it is the time for the fourth-generation of war, but we can see that russia has various means in its arsenal, including weapons of mass destruction: aerial bombs, artillery, aviation, missile attacks, nuclear blackmail, rewriting history and ordinary lies. An analysis of the kremlin leaders’ military-strategic narratives about Ukraine and the West, shows the inadequacy and detachment of moscow politicians at the highest echelon of power from reality. Their aggressive and false rhetoric based on historical manipulations and maniacal efforts to transform the world order suggests that the kremlin will not stop on its own. Someone must stop him just decisively: either Ukraine or Ukraine’s allies. Sanction policy against the russian federation, political statements and words of support for Ukraine, even assistance with military equipment and finances may not be enough, because all these are certain procedures, a waste of time, and time today is the greatest value. Key words: Ukraine, russian federation, russian aggression, dmitry medvedev, vladimir putin, geopolitics.
