Quelle est la contribution de cynthia ozick (1928), romanciere et nouvelliste juive americaine a la culture juive americaine contemporaine ? comment rend-elle compte de l'experience juive dans ses textes ? l'importance accordee a la memoire et a l'histoire justifie le choix de l'auteur de se presenter davantage comme un ecrivain juif qui ecrit en anglais que comme un ecrivain de la tradition anglo-saxonne possedant un heritage juif. Elle constitue une etape dans la quete de la verite qui est presente dans toute l'oeuvre, meme si elle emprunte des voies tout a fait divergentes, comme celle de la description de la realite la plus rposaique ou celle ou l'auteur donne libre cours a l'imagination, ce qui debouche souvent sur le fantastique. How does jewish-american novelist and short-story writer cynthia ozick (1928) contribute to contemporary jewish-americain literature ? how do her texts convey a jewish view of the world? that she gives so much importance to memory and history makes it legitimate for cynthia ozick to view herself as a jewish writer that writes in english rather than a writer belonging to the anglo-saxon tradition who also has a jewish background. That importance constitutes an aspect of the search for truth that informs ozick's whole work, taking numerous forms, as the description of the most down-to earth reality or giving free reins to the imagination - which often results in fantastic stories. This search examines the relationship between judaism and aesthetics (a major preoccupation of ozick) and justifies the use of specific narrative strategies. The thematic importance of memory and the search for truth lead to giving precedence to the written document, writing in general, over the oral message, shown to be less likely to convey the real values that cynthia ozick upholds throught her characters, who have the same obsessions as their creator

Abstract:
The aim of the research was to evaluate the premarital enrichment programme designed by Pretorius (1997) for couples who wish to remarry. The study was motivated by literature, which shows a high likelihood of divorce among divorcees who remarry. Three interested couples responded to advertisements placed in a local Potchefstroom newspaper and announcements made in churches. A qualitative (case study method) research design was used. The programme consisted of six two-hour sessions. The programme was conducted over two weekends. The first three sessions were held with all three couples and the last three sessions with each couple separately due to conflicting schedules. The effect of the programme was assessed by five measuring instruments, participants' metaphoric drawings of their relationships, semi-structured interviews, and the researcher's observations of the interaction between the participants. The assessment took place a week before and four weeks after the programme presentation. The results obtained indicated that two of the couples experienced changes whilst the other couple experienced minimal change. The change that occurred in the two couples were with regards to their communication and conflict management, their implementation of boundaries, intimacy, security in their relationship, growth, and dyadic adjustment. It was concluded that the premarital enrichment programme prepared two couples for remarriage, specifically with regards to their adjustment in the relationship.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the novels of a highly respected author of young adult literature and to summarize the plots, analyze the themes, and examine themotivations of the characters in a format that would be accessible and useful to the classroom teachers and students who read her novels. The bulk of the document will follow the format of the Twayne Series of Young Adult Writers, a serial publication of biographical information, plot summary, and critical commentary that is standard in many school libraries. Cynthia Voigt's novels are both popular with teachers and students and well-acclaimed by literary critics and scholars of young adult literature. The first chapter outlines Voigt's professional career and the events in her life that affected her writing. The four chapters that follow treat individual novels grouped as they relate to themes of defining a self, balancing commitment to self and family, learning to recognize and value individual differences, and finding the courage to challenge socially conventional expectations. The sixth chapter summarizes Voigt's philosophy of personal development as it is reflected in her writing, and the last chapter suggest strategies which could be applied to Voigt's novels in the classroom. Throughout the analses of Voigt's novels, critical Opinions and scholarly commentary have been summarized to provide a perspective that is informed by a variety of sources of information about this author's work in particular and about young adult novels in general.

Abstract:
Since the introduction of the deinstitutionalisation policy in 1997 in South Africa, many families have agreed or have felt forced to take full responsibility of the care of their mentally ill family members. This impacted the lives of families because they were not well prepared for caring for their mentally ill family members. As a result of this, families were burdened, mentally ill family members defaulted treatment and ultimately revolving door admissions occurred. In spite of these concerns, some families do seem to cope with supporting their mentally ill family members. This makes it vital to explore and describe the strengths of families who take care of mentally ill family members in Potchefstroom, in the North West Province in order to formulate guidelines to support these families. A qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual design was employed to understand what strengths families have to support their mentally ill family members. Purposive sampling was used to select potential participants. Unstructured individual interviews with an open-ended question were conducted with nine participants after ethical approval was granted under the RISE study (Strengthening the Resilience of Health Caregivers and Risk Groups), and the permission of the North-West Provincial Department of Health, the psychiatric hospital where the data was collected and the family members of the mentally ill family members were obtained. Data were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. A consensus meeting was held between the researcher and the co-coder after they had analysed data independently to identify themes that emerged from the data. Twelve themes emerged from the data namely the strengths of getting the necessary treatment for the mentally ill family member, utilizing external resources, spirituality or faith, social support, supervising the mentally ill family member, finding ways to calm the mentally ill family member, explaining the importance of treatment to the mentally ill family member, finding ways to keep the mentally ill family member busy, trying to keep the mentally ill family member away from negative outside influences, trying creative ways to communicate with or understand the mentally ill family member, giving the mentally ill family member praise for doing something good or right and accepting the situation. From the findings, it is clear that the families do have strengths to support their mentally ill family members, although they seem to rely more on external than on internal strengths. From the findings, literature and conclusions of this study, recommendations were made for nursing practice, nursing research and nursing education, including guidelines to support families in their support of a mentally ill family member.

Abstract:

Cynthia Voigt is a well-known author of children’s books. She deals mainly with contemporary issues, although she also has written some fantasy. The Tillerman saga consists of 7 books. This essay deals with the first two, Homecoming and Dicey´s Song. It is the story of four abandoned young children hiking their way through America, looking for a home to settle down in.

The phrase “The American Dream” was first coined in 1931 by J. T. Adams in The Epic of America. It is still used today for example by President Bush, although now users have new definitions and connotations to it.

The painter Norman Rockwell has been called “The Painter of the American Dream”. This essay investigates whether the idea of the American Dream as portrayed by Rockwell could be found in the aforementioned two books by Voigt. The author of this essay also used Nickel and Dimed. On (Not) Getting by in America by B. Ehrenreich and Friare kan ingen vara by G. Rosenberg to exemplify the reality behind the American Dream.

Abstract:
Recent literature has assessed the particular circumstances of Palestinian children, generally attempting to conceptualize them as either politically-charged and violent, or as marginalized citizens, victimized by dominating Israeli practices. This research attempts to broaden these conceptualizations, by exploring the relevance of Cynthia Enloe's (2000) concept of militarized maneuvering. Enloe postulates inter alia that militarization is a process which involves the obfuscation of the military's problematic nature for civil society and the almost taking for granted of military's (often violent) strategies; it occurs as societal conditions, discourses, definitions, attitudes, thoughts and expectations are produced (and re-produced). This thesis has employed an inductive qualitative study to explore the means through which Palestinian children may progress through the process of militarization, employing a coding approach to data analysis. It has studied Identity Card (1964), considered to be the "Palestinian national poem", written by "the Palestinian national poet", Mahmoud Darweish and has drawn reference to secondary literature detailing the impacts of the newly-constructed Israeli Separation Barrier on Palestinian populations. Palestinian populations may undergo the process of militarization through some of the available nationalist poetry, which offers discourses commemorating the historical connection of Palestinians with the land lost in 1948, and emphasizes the need for steadfastness, nationalism and resistance. This thesis has found that the barrier is a force which both directly and indirectly militarizes children's social conditions, exemplifying past (perceived) victimization, obstructing daily life, and oppressing Palestinians' future nation. It may also be interpreted to reinforce the desire for resistance, and therefore potentially garner support for militarized retaliatory acts against Israelis. This approach has illuminated an important and unexpected finding; the two seemingly disjoined realms of Palestinian society are undergirded by the abstract themes of collective memory and nationalism, suggesting that these are significant elements to the study of the militarization of Palestinian society, thereby offering a means to broaden the aforementioned traditional conceptualizations of Palestinian children.

The whistleblower has emerged as a relevant player in today's shifting economic and corporate landscape. Using a critical-historical methodology, this thesis explores the dimensions and boundaries of the concept of the “whistleblower”. The specific case studies of WorldCom, the Madoff Ponzi scheme, and WikiLeaks are examined. En inscrivant au cœur du livre IV et de la Rome virgilienne le tombeau de Cynthia, Properce détourne, au profit d’une femme légère, le motif traditionnel de l’immortalisation par la poésie et renverse la dialectique romaine du poète et du grand homme. Le recueil est l’épilogue d’une œuvre qui repose sur une poétique de la recusatio, refus dramatisé du grand genre, et affirme la légitimité de la subjectivité littéraire, incarnée par Cynthia. Dénouement emblématique de cette recusatio, l’apothéose de Cynthia est l’ultime fragment d’une déclaration amoureuse qui est authentique sans être sincère : elle n’obéit pas au code moderne de l’effusion spontanée d’une subjectivité idéalement transparente mais, dans un rapport dramatisé à une réalité problématique, est l’expression d’un sujet qui s’avance masqué derrière les formes et les rôles littéraires stéréotypés que sont la recusatio, le paraclausithyron, le fallax seruus de la comédie ou l’épigramme - dont le genre élégiaque est une mise en scène. By placing Cynthia’s tomb at the centre of book IV and of Virgilian Rome, Propertius perverts, for a woman of small virtue, the traditional motif of immortalisation through poetry, and turns the Roman dialectics of the poet and great man upside down. The collection of poems comes as the epilogue to a work based on the poetics of recusatio, the marked refusal of the lofty style, and asserts the legitimacy of literary subjectivity embodied by Cynthia. Emblematical outcome of this recusatio, Cynthia’s apotheosis is the last fragment of a declaration of love which is authentic without being sincere. It does not follow the modern code of a spontaneous emotional demonstration poured forth from ideally transparent subjectivity. It is rather, in a staged reaction to a problematical reality, the expression of a subjectivity sheltered behind the persona of stereotyped literary forms and parts such as the recusatio, the paraclausithyron and the fallax seruus of the Comedy or epigrams, staged in the elegiac genre. At the end of this paradoxical epic written by an amorous poet who must fight to assert the legitimacy of his love and poetry, the drama is projected into the fantazied memory of Rome. The etiological explanations reveal the founding tale’s contingency, heir to a history created by the heroic acts of a few, and also the relativity of ethical norms, proof of the irony of History and the Gods. Book IV, the symbolical churchyard where the tombs of Cynthia and Mamurius, the artist who had been exiled for sculpting a dangerously equivocal work of art, stand side by side, is the response of the poeta caelator to the horatian Vates, useful to Rome and its princes

A Shoá (calamidade, em hebraico) é um dos temas mais pesquisados de todos os tempos, seja por seu caráter perverso, seja por ter modificado a maneira segundo a qual a sociedade lida com a violência. Diante disso, há um tópico especial que chama a atenção: as vítimas e as conseqüências sofridas por elas. É nesse universo que surge The Shawl (1989), o aclamado livro da norte-americana Cynthia Ozick. Tendo em vista a grande complexidade do livro, o presente trabalho examinará a maneira que a autora encontrou para representar tal condição de quem foi exposto à loucura e à violência, e que acabou por criar novas relações entre o seu passado e seu presente, principalmente através de símbolos já conhecidos e de imagens que vão além da cristalização. Nossa hipótese é de verificar, através do estudo dos elementos do texto que vão desde as relações entre os elementos lingüísticos, até a composição das personagens como, no caos aparente, a narrativa encontra sua especificidade estética, por meio do caminho inverso que vai do símbolo às imagens na construção do Real.
The Shoah (which means calamity in Hebrew) is one of the most researched topics of all times, either by its perverse character, either because it has modified the way in which society deals with violence. Therefore, there is a special topic that draws societys attention: the victims and the consequences suffered by them. It is in this atmosphere that The Shawl (1989), Cynthia Ozicks acclaimed book, arises. Having in mind the complexity of the book, this work will examine the way the author found to represent the condition of who was exposed to madness and violence, and eventually create new relations between their past and their present, mainly through known symbols and images that go beyond crystallization. Our hypothesis is to verify, through the study of the text elements - from the relationship between the linguistic elements to the composition of the characters - how the narrative finds its aesthetic specificity through the reverse path that goes from symbol to images in the construction of the Real, in the apparent chaos.

As the first detailed study of the Southern Rhodesian romantic. novels of Cynthia Stockley (Lilian Julia Webb) and Gertrude Page (Gertrude Dobbin), this dissertation presents biographical information about the two writers as well as an analysis of the historical reception and discursive context of the novels - focusing primarily on the novels as rewritings of the gendered discourses of the British "New Imperialism" and of a nascent Rhodesian nationalism. Their novels reveal ambivalences about and conflicts between feminism and maternalism, heroic and bourgeois versions of the romance genre, and bourgeois imperialism and the representation of feminine sexuality.
