Parat-Clarke, Françoise. "Le monde rêvé de Cyrano de Bergerac." Poitiers, 1987. http://www.theses.fr/1987POIT5008.
Full textThis dissertation treats the circular metaphor in cyrano's works: the circular obsession in the journey's structure, the presence of the globular metaphor, the conspicuous presence of chateaufort in la comedie du pedant joue, and agrippine's obsession of absorbing satellite characters in her morbid vision of the world ( la tragedie de la mort d'agrippine). Cyrano mocks his heroes, whose efforts remain vain. Laughter, in bergerac's works, draws man closer to his death. This laughter indicates perversion. Here even imagination, - ordinarily pregnant with comic potential -, is dangerous. There is no harmony in laughter. In his intrinsic solitude, bergerac's protagonist lives with "monstruous chimera". Attmpting to escape from this illusory world, he searches for a concrete, intelligible one, only to find that to get there he must cynically transgress humanity's rigorous and chaste laws by destroying his father, annihilating women and, at the same time, by adulating the adolescent male looking for redemption. In the heliocentric universe that bergerac elaborates, the journey to the heart of the sun, the cosmic matrix, is a homecoming - a homecoming that only death or sleep permits. But blood is also present in this great moving body, the sun. As poison and yet vital substance, blood tarnishes birth. Only dreamy journeys liberate the poet through dazzling delivery - at last his body can float in a uterin sun. Through the art of written word, the poet sets out to rediscover this puerperal dawn

Full textThis thesis is a study of the contradictory nature of the thought of this 17th century libertine writer. It is a broad study covering the philosophical, moral, literary and psychological aspects of the question. Cyrano invokes rival epistemological principles: reason and imagination. These principles occasion philosophical duality, two radically opposed modes of expression: scientific thought and poetic spirit. We examine the makeup of these intellectual universes and we consider the question of their relationship. This epistemological conflict goes hand in hand with a double attitude: Cyrano can be accused of double dealing when he treats of social and political questions. We study the influence of this discriminatory attitude on his philosophy. In addition to this reading of duality and duplicity, we highlight the unstable character of Cyrano’s thought, as well as the personal factors which seem to bear upon it. A pronounced burlesque and playful tendency tones down the philosophical structures that we outlined, while character problems aggravate the author's divided view of knowledge and of life

Full textFor a few years now, Cyrano de Bergerac has been considered with renewed interest by literary scholars. However the many studies published recently have mainly focused on his two novels or on the collection of his letters, without really taking into account his body of works in its entirety. This study offers both to find, beyond generic variations, the coherence of his writing, and to analyse the idiosyncratic dimension of his style; the singularity of Cyrano’s writing deserves to be considered for itself, without linking it to any literary or ideological movement – be it the “Burlesques” or the “Libertines”.The combined perspectives of stylistics and of discourse analysis reveal a constant quest for linguistic virtuosity, writing conceits being its most used device. Cyrano writes to arouse admiration, as he confesses himself; his whole body of works bears the mark of this endeavour. However, aiming constantly for dazzling wit comes at a pragmatic cost; literary devices are necessary but risky – they bear witness to the fragility of the writer’s feat

Full textThis PhD dissertation queries the context in which Edmond Rostand wrote Cyrano de Bergerac. Since 1897, this play has been considered as the last French romantic drama, despite obvious chronological facts. Combining literature, history and sociology, this PhD dissertation throws light on this impression of anachronism by considering the entries of romanticism, cloak-and-dagger, heroic comedy and commedia dell'arte. Then, it shows that the work is deeply rooted in its time : first, because of its links with the "fin de siècle" idealism ; then, because it is an attempt of "total theatre" and because it includes arts that are often seen as "minor". Of course, we attach great importance to Cyrano's nose and panache which are key components of the play. Finally, studying how the newspapers, the dramatic critics, the artists and people apprehend the play and its heroe, this PhD dissertation considers Cyrano de Bergerac as a literary and cultural myth. Highlighting World War One as a turning point, we show that the play was used in a political way. Cyrano de Bergerac is supposed to be a national play but truly in a literary manner because of the alliance of "gauloiserie" and preciosity. Therefore, this dissertation shows how Rostand's work moves from a matter of literature to a matter of ethics, from an aesthetic aspect to an ideological one. Indeed, Cyrano de Bergerac is not just a play but a real social object

Full textThis research studies Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac’s work from a philosophical point of view. The coherence of cyranian thought makes itself up in demanding to think reality as entirely material. The originality of cyranian process consists in offering several answers liable to fulfil such a demand. If everything can be explained by matter and its movements, there are several ways to think the nature of matter, and the nature of its activity. Cyranian questioning takes fully into account its contemporary science. Besides, Cyrano appropriates the path from a close world to an infinite universe, and means to think the infinite multiplicity of the worlds. Lastly, men are conceived as through and through material. So this research plays a part to the revaluation of the relationship between libertinism and science, through the way Cyrano uses physics in order to conceive the world without needing God

Full textThe aim of this research is to study the complex, mobile and fruitful relationship between a philosophy - epicurianism - and certain kinds of literary works in 17th century of France. In the first part, through a careful reading of p. Gassendi's still widely ignored and mostly untranslated works, we have tried to understand how and why it became a key reference for many writers, in particular as far as the very status of appearances, images and imagination is concerned. Cyrano's L'Autre monde, La Fontaine's fables, saint-Evremond's writings: in a second part, through three monographical studies, we tried to bring into focus the extreme mobility of epicurean or gassendian motives, the wide variety of levels on which they develop within each work, and to show how they "function", epistemologically and morally, in singular literary spaces where they often deviate from their original philosophical meaning

Full textIn a village, lost in a grey desert, a young boy following in a long tradition could not aspire for happiness. As we say in his country, "when born from a lion, a lion you become". He descended from rats and hence, according to the law, he would remain against the wall by day and scavenge for scraps by night. That is, until the Traveller arrived in the village. The mysterious wanderer could see beyond his condition and soon she uncovered a spark in him. Months went by and day after day she would sit next to the stoic boy and tell him about her life, about mathematics, forest survival, anything and everything. One morning, however, nobody came. The boy remained puzzled until he noticed the Traveller's most cherished possession lying on a table in front of him. At that point, he took the first decision of his life, namely returning it to the Traveller. In these pages, I explore the matter of human happiness, why some find it, why others do not and to what extent do we play a role in the result. In the essay, I discuss the subject of happiness with Rostand and Voltaire based on our work, more specifically Cyrano de Bergerac, Candide and Charif ou l'antipathie du bonheur. Therein I compare the destiny of bigger-than-life characters and wonder about their involvement in reaching their goal or not, that is, finding happiness.

Full textIt seems that libertinism has always been misread, distorted and regarded as a movement with a limited scale. However, even if the establishment of the notion of libertinism was based on the negative vision spread by its detractors, it was actually a strong ideology, philosophy and style that was often misunderstood because the libertins always denied all kind of dogma. Therefore, they do not propose a philosophical model but a way of thinking in which the reader has to figure one’s own vision of the world as well as an ideal model of life and wisdom. This continuity was revealed by the contemporary criticism of the libertins from the seventeenth century, that we name “Scholars” since the thesis developed by René Pintard in 1943. But the chronology divides the movement in two periods and denies the possibility of a continuity between the libertine authors from the seventeenth century and those from the eighteenth century, regarded as minors authors. Through the study of four libertine pieces from the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries (Les États et Empires de la Lune et du Soleil by Cyrano de Bergerac, Dom Juan by Molière, Thérèse philosophe by Boyer d’Argens and the three versions of Justine by Sade) and through their comparison with the stakes of libertinism defined by the theoretical texts and criticism, this continuity is highlighted and studied in five fundamental ways : refusal of beliefs, the promotion of a scientific approach, putting common values in perspective, the existence of a materialistic hermeneutics and the constitution of a political, social and philosophical ideal

Full textComplex and mysterious, utopia has undoubtedly been one of the concepts whose long career in the history of human thinking and culture has been undeniable. Having in view this conceptual legacy our analysis of utopia in the French literature from the beginning of Classicism to the beginning of the Enlightment starts with the description of the theoretical background of utopia, with the word, as such, and the various significances that it has received along the time and with the presentation of the two paradigms characterizing it, the theoretical and the literary paradigm. From the origin and the metamorphoses of the concept of utopia down to its evolution towards a literary genre in itself we have approached a corpus of texts that demonstrate once and again the consecration, the maturity and the elasticity of the utopian genre, in the two novels of Cyrano de Bergerac, Les États et Empires de la Lune et du Soleil, the novel of Gabriel de Foigny, La Terre australe connue, the Aventures de Télémaque by Fénelon and the three plays by Marivaux, L’île des esclaves, L’île de la raison et La Colonie. In the light of the dual significance of the term created by More, that of a place of nowhere (« ou-Topos »), but also that of a place of happiness (« eu-Topos »), we have divided the paper into two big parts, one devoted to the analysis of the utopian space and the other to the analysis of the utopian society. Plurivalent and heterogeneous, the utopian space pursues, in every work analyzed, some general principles such as the insularity, the otherness and the isolation, and, at the same time, all of them acquire special configurations which proves both the particular identity of the work chosen and the web of significances that binds them. The analysis of the utopian society is in itself a rich source of observations and conclusions and relies on three major coordinates: the otherness of the utopian society, its ideal nature and its implicit scrutiny of the human society. Behind these theoretical pillars we discover the actual description of the utopian society, with the portrait of the Utopian being, the trial of the human being, and the numerous economic, political and organizational aspects that characterize the entire community

The research of this thesis is about the contemporary Japanese theatre director Suzuki Tadashi, who has devoted himself to theatre practice for many years, constantly trying to make a breakthrough in the framework of traditional theatre. Not only did he form a set of mature performance training methods, but he also made some important contributions in cross-cultural theatre, and created a bridge for the exchange and communication between eastern and western theatres. However, in the current theatre environment in Taiwan, the understanding of Suzuki Tadashi is very limited, and the research on him is simply insufficient. This thesis takes the development of contemporary Japan as its background, and is based on the development process of Suzuki Tadashis drama, then carries on the analysis and comparison of some specific works to study the characteristics and styles of Suzukis pieces. Suzuki has been involved in the small theater movement since the 1960s. He pays attention to the discovery of actors inner energy and the development of his or her body, and constantly combines multi-language and multi-culture to create a series of cross-cultural dramas. Suzukis works, such as "King Lear," "Trojan Women," "Dionysus," "Sacred Nose," "Lady Camellia" and "Ivanov," have all been branded with strong personal styles. Thus, his works are often controversial. This thesis chooses Suzuki Tadashis intercultural adapted works, "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "La dame aux camelias," for interpretation of the original works, analysis of text adaptation and stage presentation, and then compares the two works to show Suzukis dramatic creation styles. It is hoped that through this study, more theatre enthusiasts will be able to understand this important director of the contemporary Japanese theatre, and more dramatists will try to create cross-cultural adaptation, so as to broaden the stage for the development of contemporary theatre.
Jama, Sophie. "Cyrano de Bergerac héros d’une mythologie de la France : la pièce d’Edmond Rostand passée au crible de la sociocritique." Thèse, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/8772.
Full textEdmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac has undergone innumerable adaptations and interpretations on the stage and on the screen. Since its premiere on December 28, 1897, its success in France and internationally has been considerable. The play’s eponymous hero is based freely on the 18th-century writer Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac. But while today’s audiences tenderly admire the large-nosed dueller who, through his love letters, helps the handsome Christian conquor Roxana’s heart, few read the author on whom the fictional character is based. Though recognized for its wit, emotion, characters, and poetry, the play’s literary merit does not seem sufficient to explain its instant and enduring success. This paper argues instead that Edmond Rostand formed Cyrano de Bergerac into a literary myth, filled with symbols of an identity with which the French were able to identify themselves. To this and to the sociopolitical context that informs Rostand’s work can be attributed the piece’s overwhelming triumph. Rostand created a swashbuckling gospel against the background of the Dreyfus Affair for a theatrical universe that integrates symbols in which the French willingly located themselves: gastronomy, elegance, eloquence, gallantry, fidelity, honor, patriotism, and of course, panache.
