Abstract:
Czech and Polish Table Tennis Players of Jewish Origin in International Competition (1926-1957)The beginnings of the 18th century marked the birth of Jewish sport. The most famous athletes of those days were boxers, such as I. Bitton, S. Eklias, B. Aaron, D. Mendoga. Popular sports of this minority group included athletics, fencing and swimming. One of the first sport organizations was the gymnastic society Judische Turnverein Bar Kocha (Berlin - 1896).Ping-pong as a new game in Europe developed at the turn of the 20th century. Sport and organizational activities in England were covered by two associations: the Ping Pong Association and the Table Tennis Association; they differed, for example, in the regulations used for the game. In 1902, Czeski Sport (a Czech Sport magazine) and Kurier Warszawski (Warsaw's Courier magazine) published first information about this game. In Czech Republic, Ping-pong became popular as early as the first stage of development of this sport worldwide, in 1900-1907. This was confirmed by the Ping-pong clubs and sport competitions. In Poland, the first Ping-pong sections were established in the period 1925-1930. Czechs made their debut in the world championships in London (1926). Poles played for the first time as late as in the 8th world championships in Paris (1933). Competition for individual titles of Czech champions was started in 1927 (Prague) and in 1933 in Poland (Lviv). In the 1930s, Czechs employed an instructor of Jewish descent from Hungary, Istvan Kelen (world champion in the 1929 mixed games, studied in Prague). He contributed to the medal-winning success of Stanislaw Kolar at the world championships. Jewish players who made history in world table tennis included Trute Kleinowa (Makkabi Brno) - world champion in 1935-1937, who survived imprisonment in the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration camp, Alojzy Ehrlich (Hasmonea Lwów), the three-time world vice-champion (1936, 1937, 1939), also survivor of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and Ivan Andreadis (Sparta Praga), nine-time world champion, who was interned during World War II (camp in Kleinstein near Krapkowice).Table tennis was a sport discipline that was successfully played by female and male players of Jewish origins. They made powerful representations of Austria, Hungary, Romania and Czech Republic and provided the foundation of organizationally strong national federations.

Abstract:
The use of multidimensional scales for assessing fear of death among nursing students can assist in teaching and evaluating the effectiveness of targeted training in thanatology. Research has demonstrated good psychometric characteristics of the Czech version of the Collett–Lester Fear of Death Scale (CL-FODS). It was applied to nursing students ( N = 256), who reported as their biggest fear the process of their own dying. Greater fear of death and dying was found in students who had no experience of the dying and death of a loved one. Good internal consistency was achieved for the four subscales of the Czech CL-FODS.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of an analysis of the changes in the fragmentation and ecological stability of the floodplain forest geobiocoenoses in the Protected Landscape Area Litovelské Pomoraví, Czech Republic. Using GIS methods, it was determined that the fragmentation within the study area had increased slightly and the ecological stability of the landscape had decreased slightly between the years 1938 and 2006, although the latter remained on a fairly high level. The data reflect the anthropogenic conditionality of the floodplain forest ecosystem and show that an anthropogenically conditioned geobiocoenosis may attain a relatively high level of ecological stability, this being particularly characteristic of floodplain forest geobiocoenoses in Central Europe. The results of the study contribute to the documents that will be used in drawing up a management plan for the locality important at the European level which is a part of the Natura 2000 system.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of the study was to ascertain how preschool children consume media, which types of media content they are sensitive to and how children affect the shopping behavior of their parents. In other words, the study aimed at revealing whether distinctions occur among the selection of the media, among preferences of media products and forms, among concepts within advertising, among the attractiveness of media contents, among the types of influence by advertising products and among the means by which boys and girls have impact on their parents. Design/methodology/approach The paper is focused on the analyses of the perception of advertising messages and media consumption of children aged from two to seven years (N = 55) and their parents (N = 55) in the Czech Republic. The semi-structured interviews with the parents and children were used as the main research method. The children’s drawings focused on popular advertising were used as a supplementary method. The final findings were subjected to qualitative analyses – to thematic content analyses. Findings The analyzed interviews have revealed four key factors which frame and express the Czech preschool children’s reception and consumption of the media and their consumer behavior: media, media format and media content choice of preschool children; ritualization of the media consumption processes in preschool children; identification of advertising appeals within the media content in preschool children; and influence of media (and a social and cultural environment) on shopping behavior of preschool children. The findings are summarized in the table and visualized in thematic map. Research limitations/implications The sample size is small; therefore, it is not possible to generalize the results to all preschool children. Originality/value The study provides an explanation of the perception of media messages by preschool children from a broader perspective, from the children and their parents’ point of view.

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the subject of the role of the teacher in low-threshold courses of Czech for foreigners provided by The Centre for Integration of Foreigners (CIC). The thesis is divided into a theoretical and empirical part. The theoretical part is divided into three main parts. The first chapter explains the term "low-threshold", which is later put into context of foreign language education organized by the state or non-profit organizations. We focus mainly on NPK CIC. We cover how the courses are built, what is their content and what are the specific of (large) heterogenous classes. The second chapter focuses on adult education in general. We cover the basic of adult education and introduce the key competencies that are developed at NPK. The third chapter covers the adult's teacher. It defines who the teacher is and what his competencies are. We also compare the demands that the teacher has to meet in schools or when they are a teacher at NPK. The chapter covers the role of the teacher and analyses the usage of these models in the environment of NPK. Attention is also paid to team teaching. The empiric part deals with the description of the results and implementation of qualitative research. The aim of this research was to find out how the teachers view their role at NPK that substantially...

The work gives a comprehensive overview of the education of students with severe visual impairment, focusing on teaching language education. Currently, more and more advancing the concept of integration / inclusion of pupils with special educational needs in mainstream education are the teachers in mainstream schools subject to requirements that the process of integration / inclusion of these pupils were able to cope. It is therefore necessary that the teachers have to orientate in this field, and especially to know who can work with, who to turn to. To create a homogeneous group within the class is very appropriate for the pupil with severe visual impairments to participate in any activities with their peers, under which, inter alia, the work also comes with teaching aids. To support such a common activity, I made a technical cooperation tactile teaching materials focusing on language education. You can also use the intact classmates in the classroom, which could eliminate the differentiation of students "without " and "with" special educational needs as much as possible.

Abstract:
v anglickém jazyce The present M.A. thesis deals with teaching the Czech for foreigners in the preschool education institution. The work with the preschool children is connected with lots of specifics and thus it requires teacherʼs special attitude towards their very young learners. Children- foreigners often come from families, where nobody speaks Czech and their vocabulary is very restricted. Therefore, their inclusion into the Czech educational environment is not easy. In the theoretical part, at first we will focus on analysis of curriculum documents for preschool education, particularly with regard to children-foreigners. Afterwards, we will pay oneʼs attention to possibilities of support of integration of children-foreigners during education in Czech preschool institutions. After that, we will outline the aspects accompanying foreigners' integration into teaching and theoretical ways for child-foreigners integration process. At the end of the theoretical part, we characterize group and individual courses. Two case studies are subject of the empirical part and they contain the complex analysis of situation of children-foreigners in selected preschool institutions.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the law on creditor claims in the Czech Republic. The Czech Insolvency Act appears to deal with creditors’ claims in a fairly standard manner, making pre-insolvency claims subject to the process of claims submission and verification, and dealing with claims arising during the proceedings as administration claims. But the Insolvency Act actually confers upon creditors the power to decide on numerous of issues in the course of particular proceedings, eg, whether the debtor should be liquidated or reorganized. Many of the difficulties surrounding the Act’s rules on the submission and verification of claims are thus related to the question of who gets to decide on the course of the insolvency proceedings. The chapter then examines insolvency claims, administration claims, and non-enforceable claims in turn. Each section covers: the definition and scope of the claim; rules for submission, verification, and satisfaction or admission of claims; ranking of claims; and voting and other participation rights in insolvency proceedings.

Abstract:
The presented contribution analyses – in the context of Jan Zouhar’s research scope and also on the background of the professional interests of the immortalized František Kautman (1927–2016) – the ‘philosophy’ of T. G. Masaryk’s (1850–1937) work. At the beginning, there are new publications on his alleged origin from the family of the Austro-Hungarian monarch, further their fictionalization, the investigation of his late sexual life and, last but not least, the flow of his juvenile correspondence with Zdenka Šemberová (1841–1912). For her, this communication was full of erotic and intellectual hopes which were not fulfilled and led to her lifelong loneliness and resignation, especially after the death of her father Alois Vojtěch Šembera (1807–1882), professor of Vienna Slavonic studies, one of the first opponents of the medieval authenticity of the legendary Czech Manuscripts, all of this on the background of the life of the university and Czech Vienna, where they both lived, and the adjacent Moravia. Masaryk, with his weak knowledge of standard Czech, Šemberová, at that time already a mature lady, record in their correspondence the course of their lives, their opinions, readings, and document their intellectual maturing. Their correspondence represents evidence of the lives of both: Masaryk was gradually becoming a scholar and mainly a politician, and understood their correspondence, from which Zdenka expected also an amorous fulfilment, as a mere practical exercise in stylistics and a confrontation of opinions. Their correspondence throws a new, not always favourable light on the youth of the future Czechoslovak president. Already there, the elementary features of his personality were taking their shapes.

Abstract:
The 1870s marked the onset of an exceptionally fruitful and dynamic period in the development of chemistry in the Czech Lands. University education and research in chemistry was taking place at several universities and technical universities, where the structure of the main chemical subjects developed gradually into organic, inorganic, analytical, physical, fermentation, and medical chemistry, just to mention the main specialties. At the same time, the process of the Czech National Revival led to the cultural, linguistic, social, and political emancipation of the modern Czech nation and stepwise almost entirely separated the linguistically Czech and German scientific communities in all their representations, including university education. In Prague, the divided German and Czech Polytechnics (and later Technical Universities) existed since 1869, whereas the Charles-Ferdinand University split into its Czech and German counterparts only in the years 1882 and 1883. The chemical community was organized in several professional associations that also reflected the ethnic division of the scientific scene. The Society of Czech Chemists, founded in 1866, had almost exclusively Czech membership, while a specialized German chemical association has never been created in the Czech Lands. This study deals with two closely intertwined themes: the reception of the periodic system in the Czech Lands and in Europe and the crucial role of the Czech chemist Bohuslav Brauner in this process. I am going to demonstrate a specific set of conditions that shaped the process of appropriation of this new scientific idea by not only scholarly argumentation, but also particular circumstances, in this case Slavic nationalism and Russophilia in the Czech society at the turn of the nineteenth century. The course of dissemination and reception of the periodic system also showed linkage to the linguistic emancipation of the Czech nation as reflected in the controversy over the Czech chemical terminology, where the periodic system served as argument to one party of the dispute.

This chapter discusses The Jews of Bohemia and Moravia. It explains that this book is an important source of information about Jewish life in the Czech lands. The book offers a collection of carefully chosen fragments of memoirs, private and public documents, and literary selections (including poetry) supplemented by the editor's comments. These help the reader to understand the course of events. The chapter shows how this collection can present an excellent and exciting portrait of the life and death of Jewish society in the Czech lands. The book relates the troubles, failures, and achievements of individuals as well as small communities, and through these accounts depicts the fate of Czech Jewry and describes the changes of the past 200 years.

Abstract:
The study presents results of a survey concerning students with disabilities, their chances to study at universities, and accessibility of higher education in the Czech Republic. We conducted interviews of academic employees at Jan Evangelista Purkyne University in Ústínad Labem in the Czech Republic when I worked there. The chapter reveals the current state of accessible higher education. Further, it shares results from research conducted among existing faculty and administration about their attitudes towards students with disabilities as well as about their preparedness to accommodate candidates and to modify their own courses. We revealed intensive attitudinal barriers that existed among faculty. Some of the respondents even expressed an opinion that disabled students should be excluded from higher education. Professors and instructors were not aware of the needs of students with disabilities or how to include them in the learning process. They never thought about how inaccessible their courses were regarding representation, expression, engagement, or assessment.

The extent to which history is determinative of, or even relevant to, the present is of course subject to an old and inconclusive debate. There seems to be no guarantee that great social traditions and achievements of the past will be preserved to the present day, no matter what the effort. Conversely, however, if a society works hard at destroying its institutions and persists with this programme for decades, it is quite likely to succeed, as evidenced by the sad story of private law in several jurisdictions in central Europe in the second half of the 20th century.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a framework for understanding the consequences of hard-right electoral breakthrough for the framing of homosexuality and LGBT rights. It begins by describing the extant framings of homosexuality under late communism in Poland and the Czech Republic. It then compares how the differing electoral success of hard-right political parties over the course of the EU accession process led to differing degrees of reframing homosexuality in both countries. In Poland, hard-right mobilization transformed the framing of LGBT rights by linking them with EU accession, which it portrayed as a threat to national identity. Because the Czech Republic did not experience hard-right backlash, the predominant framing of LGBT rights did not become as closely identified with the EU. The final part of the chapter moves from framing contests to frame resonance by presenting a quantitative content analysis of LGBT issues in both countries’ press from 1990 through 2012.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces a case study on the use of video summaries in a university setting. It presents a practical insight into a simple, yet complex and versatile activity that aims at improving the language and communication skills of students in authentic intercultural academic situations. This activity has been developed, implemented and used in language courses at Masaryk University (MU), Brno, Czech Republic, and Universidad Nacional del Sur (UNS), Bahía Blanca, Argentina, since February 2014. Students undertaking language courses at MU and UNS write texts and record video summaries outside of class. They then reflect and discuss linguistic, cultural and organisational topics in class or online discussion forums. The activity consists of a set of interconnected tasks that improve students' understanding of similarities and differences between written and spoken styles, encourage their learning autonomy and enhance the authenticity of their language development.

Abstract:
This chapter outlines the ways of seeing, experiencing, and moving through the world and the kinds of persons people become through them. It explains the process known as traversing, which was drawn from philosophical concepts developed by two phenomenological philosophers, Martin Heidegger and Jan Patocka. With the ethnographic analyses of the lives of contemporary Czechs, the chapter examines how embodiment is crucial for understanding “being-in-the-world.” Specifically, it focuses on three kinds of movements made as embodied actors in the world: how people move through time and space, how people move toward and away from one another, and how people move toward themselves and the earth they live on. It highlights the significance of both spatiality and temporality, considering how movement varies across different moments in the body's temporality or life course.

Abstract:
Hitchcock’s first talking film, Blackmail (1929), presented the Master with a dilemma when it came to the performance of his lead actress, Anny Ondra. Blackmail had been shot first as a silent film, but when it was decided to do a sound version, Ondra’s thick Czech accent was judged unacceptable because she was playing the part of a working-class London girl. Hitchcock did not want to replace Ondra, and so he got the young British actress Joan Barry to read the lines for her off-camera as Ondra mimed to them. The result is often awkward, of course, but it also says something about the difference between what an actor is like as an image and what an actor is like when they speak.

Full text
Abstract:
Students in the Czech Republic are increasingly interested in secondary school studies with a universal technical focus providing job security and a swift path to retraining according to existing labour market requirements. The aim of the paper is to find out how Czech students of secondary technical schools evaluate their professional development in the course of their secondary school studies. Qualitatively oriented research is focused on the quality of development of the secondary school studies as regarded by the secondary technical school students in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. The research outputs provide suggestions for students to improve their professional development throughout the secondary school studies, as well as suggestions for procedures that may help remove the occurrence of barriers in their educational paths to a technically oriented profession. A partial output of the research questionnaire survey is to describe, characterise and evaluate the idea of secondary technical schools’ students about their future profession and the level of their motivation to study at Czech technical secondary schools. Students consider the low number of teaching hours per week for teaching new modern technologies and computer-controlled machines to be a critical external barrier in their professional development. They admit low motivation to learn a large amount of theoretical information, without linking theory with practice. Practical work in workshops belongs among popular subjects.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper describes a new human-machine (HMI) interface of the VR-1 nuclear training reactor at the Czech Technical University in Prague. The VR-1 reactor is primarily used for training of university students and future nuclear power plant staff. The new HMI was designed to meet functional, ergonomic and aesthetic requirements. It contains a PC with two monitors. The first alphanumerical monitor presents text messages about the reactor operation and status; next, the operator can enter commands to control the reactor operation. The second graphical monitor provides parameters of reactor operation and shows the course of the reactor power and other parameters. Furthermore, it is able to display the core configuration, perform reactivity calculations, etc. The HMI is also equipped with an alarm annunciator. Due to a high number of foreign students and visitors at the reactor, the Czech and English language versions of the user interface are available. The HMI contains also a History server which provides a very detailed storage and future presentation of the reactor operation. The new HMI improves safety and comfort of the reactor utilization, facilitates experiments and training, and provides better support for foreign visitors.

Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to evaluate teachers´ competences and their self-reflection in the teaching process. The topicality of the research presented in the paper is given by the fact that teachers at university level must prove excellent competences regardless external factors which affect the teaching process any time. Competence is the key qualified and professional job performance in any sector. The paper focuses on the competences of university teachers which they acquire and develop throughout their career. Attention is given to professionally and personality cultivating competences, part of which is also self-reflection. Self-reflection refers to a person’s ability of introspection and willingness to learn more about own abilities and skills. This will lead to a better ability to identify changes that may be required. The methodology consists in a research based on a questionnaire survey and statistical evaluation of gathered information. The paper gives an outline of the evaluation process at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU), during which opinions of students and teachers about instruction were analysed, together with the fulfilment of selected university competences. The main body of the paper is dedicated to the statistical processing of selected data from the evaluation survey conducted by using the SPSS programme. The results indicate that there are significant deviations of teachers´ self-evaluation from the students´ opinion. The Institute of Education and Communication is going to offer courses in advanced competence development using techniques of self-reflection. This has a potential to enhance effectiveness of the teaching process at university level.

Abstract:
Regional climate changes impacts induce vegetation zones shift to higher altitudes in temperate landscape. This paper deals with applying of regional biogeography model of climate conditions for vegetation zones in Czechia to doctoral programme Regional Geography in Palacky University Olomouc. The model is based on general knowledge of landscape vegetation zonation. Climate data for model come from predicted validated climate database under RCP8.5 scenario since 2100. Ecological data are included in the Biogeography Register database (geobiocoenological data related to landscape for cadastral areas of the Czech Republic). Mathematical principles of modelling are based on set of software solutions with GIS. Students use the model in the frame of the course “Special Approaches to Landscape Research” not only for regional scenarios climate change impacts in landscape scale, but also for assessment of climate conditions for growing capability of agricultural crops or forest trees under climate change on regional level.

Abstract:
The paper deals with comparative analyses of the main competing transport modes in terms of the planned construction of high-speed rail / HSR. In the conditions of the Czech Republic, it is practically only bus transport and individual car transport (including relevant alternative types of transport). In this context, based on available data from traffic statistics, the existing traffic flows in passenger transport on the roads corresponding to the planned HSR routes are analysed. The main goal of the article is to present the results of comparative analyses of transport modes representing the most important potential competitors of the planned HSR and the subsequent synthesis of the obtained results. In accordance with the fact that the key destination is of course Prague, followed by Brno, especially their planned interconnection using HSR (assuming an adequate supply of a competitive solution) has greatest potential for shifting part of demand from bus but also from individual car transport to rail.

Abstract:
In women’s artistic gymnastics, the balance beam belongs among the disciplines with the heaviest lower limbs load. The aim of our research was to disclose a lower limbs weekly load volume regarding load asymmetry, and to determine the take-off and landing reaction forces between landing ground and foot in selected gymnastic elements. In 9 female artistic gymnasts of junior and senior category one training week was video-recorded and analysed. The reaction forces were measured using 5 Bertec force plates in one female Czech nation-al team member. Based on the training video recordings 12 jump and acrobatic elements were analysed. Among the total of 422 recorded take-offs and landings 41% were performed from both legs, (BL), 44.5% from one lower limb (HL) and 14.5% from the other lower limb (LL). The maximum reaction force of the landing ground during take-offs was 2.4 BW in av-erage, 3.1 BW in landings. In asymmetrical elements, one leg was loaded three times more (538.3 BW) than the other (174.1 BW) in one training day in total. We recommend to record the load asymmetry in the course of the gymnastic trainings in order to choose and person-alise the appropriate regeneration process and compensational exercise.
