Abstract:
In the course of its history, Prague has been the site of many significant cultural confrontations and conversations. From the medieval chronicle of Cosmas to the work of contemporary writers, the city has taken shape in literature as a multivalent space where identities are constructed and questioned. The evolution of Prague's literary significance has taken place in an intercultural context: both Czech-speaking and German-speaking writers have engaged with the city and its past, and their texts have interacted with each other. The city has played a central part in many collective narratives in which myth, history and literature intertwine. Looking at contemporary prose fiction written in both Czech and German, this thesis explores continuities and contrasts in the literary roles played by Prague. It analyses two German-speaking emigrant authors, Libuše Moníková (1945-1998) and Jan Faktor (1951- ), viewing them alongside three Czech writers, Jáchym Topol (1962- ), Daniela Hodrová (1946- ), and Michal Ajvaz (1949- ). Through close readings of eight texts, the thesis approaches the imagined city from four angles. It discusses how contemporary authors portray the search for meaning in the city by imagining Prague as two contrasting realms (the 'real' city and the 'other' city), how the discontinuities of the city are reflected by the fragmentation of the authorial stance, how these authors assemble new Prague myths from the vestiges of older topoi, and how they confront the contradictory urges to uphold the boundaries of the city and to transgress them. In post-1989 Prague, authors explore the unstable spaces between continuity and discontinuity, constructing an authorial ethos in these areas of tension.

Pallasvuo, K. I. "The formation of the female self in Czech literature, 1890-1945." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1429466/.

Full text
Abstract:
At the end of the nineteenth century, a debate about women’s position in society and cultural life evolved in Czech press, periodicals and literature. Woman’s sense of self had long been dependent on her marital status and her family’s social standing, and it is this dependency that Czech authors of the Fin de siècle began to reevaluate in their works. In my thesis, I study the concept of the female self in works of five Czech authors from the 1890s to the 1940s, namely Růžena Svobodová, Božena Viková Kunětická, Božena Benešová, Vítězslav Nezval and Jarmila Svatá. I argue that in the hands of these authors, the concept of female self transforms from a self that relies on outer stories (society) to a self that is formed by inner stories (mind). The female self of Svobodová and Viková is based on creativity, procreation and a sense of emancipation from man. Thus, there are connections to be drawn between fiction and the Czech women’s movement. By the 1910s, however, in the fiction of Benešová, the freedom of the female self is revealed to be only apparent, and the formation of female selfhood relies heavily on the relationship between individual and community. Finally, in the 1930s and 40s, Nezval and Svatá portray a self that is at its strongest when looking inward and harnessing strengths from within, rather than attempting to fulfil the expectations of others.

Williams, Sandra June. "An analysis of the readings of cultural indicators embedded in children's literature texts." Thesis, Coventry University, 1998. http://curve.coventry.ac.uk/open/items/e4118f36-c711-b0ef-03d9-c63be4781495/1.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis identifies cultural indicators of Englishness through an analysis of readings of children's literature texts. These were taught on a children's literature course to Czech student-teachers at the Pedagogical Faculty, Brno in the Czech Republic from 1992 to 1995. The aim has been to identify cultural indicators of Englishness embedded in the texts and to reveal myths of national identity. This has been achieved by using a cross-cultural perspective whereby the Czech readings have been used to identify taken-for-granted aspects of English culture. The outcome has been to provide a paradigm for the exploration of culture in and through children's literature texts and to argue that children's literature should be incorporated into the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language and cultural studies for non-native speakers of English. In addition the methodological implications for the teaching of children's literature texts in the EFL classroom are discussed. The theoretical position which underpins the work is phenomenological in that it is an investigation of meanings. The readings by the Czech students and then the researcher were considered from two theoretical positions. An ethnographic perspective has been employed using the work of Geerz and Cohen to investigate the readings of three cohorts of Czech students who are outsiders to English culture. The reactions of the Czech students to the texts significantly reveal the legacy of the totalitarian system which began to end with the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989. Literary theory has been applied by the researcher to investigate the texts from an insider's perspective. Reader response theories involving the notion of the implied reader (Iser) and horizons of expectations (Jauss) are adopted to reveal and interrogate a culture's notions of childhood. It is established in the thesis that hitherto a sociological perspective has been taken with children's literature texts in the investigation of ideology with reference to class, race and gender. These have been oppositional readings which locate English children's literature as a site for the socialisation of children into the norms, values and beliefs of dominant society. It is argued in this thesis that by a careful investigation of the texts from a literary perspective and using the cross-cultural information gained, another view might be taken which is that English children's literature texts are less than normalising.

Perinova, Jitka. "The construction of contemporary reality in selected works of Czech fiction : Emil Hakl and Jan Balabán." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/5987/.

Full text
Abstract:
At the beginning of the 1990’s, after a period of momentary confusion, when Czech literature seems to have temporarily lost its way in the newly establishing democratic society which emerged after the fall of communism a number of rather interesting and important writers appeared. Holding the memories of recent communist past and experiencing the historical turning point when Czech society rejoined the capitalist West, they produced an image of cultural and political initiation. They bore witness to the arrival of chaos, associated with regime change, to a crisis of personal values and a search for new ways of existence. This thesis analyzes the literary work of two contemporary Czech writers, Emil Hakl and Jan Balabán. It explores the way the reality of their narratives is shaped. It investigates the reality these narratives reflect, the reality these narratives create and the reality that the reader of these narratives re-creates on the basis of his/her knowledge of the world. The thesis considers the value judgments which are being made by Czech society through its contemporary literature about its post-communist present. The thesis also examines the question to what extent these narratives construct an image of contemporary Czech society. The thesis deals with the complete fiction written by Emil Hakl (b. 1958) and Jan Balabán (1961-2010), two popular and critically acclaimed Czech writers. The first part of the thesis analyzes Hakl’s fiction, in particular his debut Konec světa (The End of the World), a work which opens the world of Jan Beneš (Hakl’s real name), the narrating character of this text and also the narrating character of almost all the other texts written by Emil Hakl. The second part of the thesis focuses on the constructed and deconstructed world of Jan Balabán’s fiction. It deals with themes and motifs that appear and re-appear in the lives of Balabán’s male and female characters and explores individual characters whose lives have been shaped by their own personal breakdowns as well as by changes in the social and political conditions of the external world. The thesis analyzes Hakl’s and Balabán’s narratives from a narratological point of view. The thesis uses the semiotic and narratological approach (H. Porter Abbott, Mieke Bal, Seymour Chatman, Tomáš Kubíček and Gerald Prince), the post-structuralist approach (Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva), the psychoanalytical approach (Jacques Lacan, Slavoj Žižek), the postmodern (Steven Connor), the theories dealing with the typology and the mythology of the novel and the city (Daniela Hodrová), the cultural approach (John Storey) and the approach of New Historicism (Louis A. Montrose, Hayden White).

McCauley, Christopher Michael. "Language, Memory, and Exile in the Writing of Milan Kundera." PDXScholar, 2016. http://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3047.

Full text
Abstract:
During the twentieth century, the former Czechoslovakia was at the forefront of Communist takeover and control. Soviet influence regulated all aspects of life in the country. As a result, many well-known political figures, writers, and artists were forced to flee the country in order to evade imprisonment or death. One of the more notable examples is the writer Milan Kundera, who fled to France in 1975. Once in France, the notion of exile became a prominent theme in his writing as he sought to expose the political situation of his country to the western world--one of the main reasons why he chose to publish his work in French rather than in Czech. This thesis analyzes the themes of language and memory in connection with exile in two of Kundera's novels, Le livre du rire et de l'oubli (1978) and L'Ignorance (2000). We contend that these concepts serve as anchors and tethers, stabilizing forces meant to help exiled characters recreate their identity outside of their homeland. By exploring notions of language and memory in these novels, Kundera demonstrates how the experience of exile affects the human condition during the latter half of the twentieth century.

With the past destiny of the Czech Republic, Czech writers have unique literary features due to the historical torrents, thus bring out the painful experiences of the Czechs with a sense of humor. Marx, the sociologist, believes that literature can truly reflect the societies and lives, including all kinds of difficulties. That’s why the works from Czech writers are able to portray the Czechs' responses to the various processes throughout lives. The love stories in Czech novels show the absurdity of life and are inseparable from societies and historical lives. How the works from Czech writers reveal the spirits of the Czechs and constructs the collective memory of the nation is an issue worth investigating. This thesis adopts textual analysis based on the theory of hermeneutics and Sociology of literature, choosing the literary works of three writers on behalf of the Czech contemporary literature: Ivan Klíma, who experienced concentration camp life, Bohumil Hrabal, who describes the life of the underlying Czechs, and Milan Kundera, the victim of Czech politics. To achieve a fusion of texts, this study explores the relationship among literature, commentary and society as well as memory.

Abstract:
- English Vítězslav Nezval's Bulgarian Romance, or Dora Gabe and V. Nezval in Czech-Bulgarian Literary Connections I first heard about the personal encounters and relationship between the poets Dora Gabe and Vítězslav Nezval in the 90s at the Bulgarian Embassy in Prague. And the information was indeed proven to be true - not only had the poets known each other, they even collaborated on translations and inspired one another. The epistolary correspondence between Nezval and Gabe still bears witness to this. Their real- life romance eventually transitioned to their literary work. A substantial and more important fact is that the romance inspired several works by both - Nezval and Gabe. Perhaps the most interesting footprint comes in form of their joint translation of Gabe's auto- biographical prose work Dávno (Once upon a time), which she had primarily written in 1932, and Nezval's novel Jak vejce vejci (Cut from the same cloth) from 1933, although this is merely an indirect illustration of the work and the creative personality of Dora Gabe, a reflection of sorts. Dora Gabe met Nezval in the Autumn of 1931 at a memorial evening held for the passing of Thomas Alva Edison at the Vinohrady Theatre in Prague, during which Nezval's poem Edison was recited. The poet left a direct written testimony about...

Primary aim of this diploma is characteristic of changes in official works of Czech literature in the period of "Normalization". The first chapter focuses on a general description of the social situation of the 1970s and 1980s from the economic, political and cultural point of view. In the second chapter we summarized the specific features of socialist realism as an artistic method and the basic censure requirements on the literature of commitment. The basic source of characteristic of the literary process are primarily critical articles and theoretical monographies about socialist realism of 70s and 80s. In the third chapter we analyzed the selected works applying requirements of engaged critic in the representation of the normalization context or directly a social situation of the 70s and 80s. The main aim of this thesis is narrative analysis of selected texts, not the general quality evaluation of officially published works.

Abstract:
The thesis documents and interprets the conflict between the literary discourses of the time on the one hand, and the specific approach of Karel Krejčí (1904-1979), comparatist, Slavist and Czech studies scholar, on the other hand. Based on the Krejčí's studies on literary history and comparative literature, as well as his participation in the methodological debates of his time, the thesis analyses the impact of this conflict on the author's literary theory method, and his work of a literary historian and comparatist in general. The analysis is based on the ambiguous reception of Krejčí's scientific work: while he is recognised as a great personality in the field of Slavic studies, he is considered an outsider in the general context of Czech literary science. The thesis describes how the author, with his methodological approach, was in opposition to the prevailing trend. As a Slavic studies scholar he criticised the 'influence science' and positivist methods employed in the field. In the period between the two world wars he inclined towards the sociology of literature, although this discipline did not become popular. While he was interested in phenomenology and formalism, he defended his 'historical-sociological' approach against structuralism, which was gaining ground. In the 1950s Krejčí wrote a...

Tomáš, Filip. "Holokaust jako fikce." Doctoral thesis, 2011. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-311335.

Full text
Abstract:
180 Abstract The English-language title of the work Holokaust jako fikce is not entirely unambiguous, because the equivalent, The Holocaust as a Fiction, due to its indefinite article, comes close to denial of the Holocaust as a historical phenomenon. That is of course utterly unacceptable nonsense; however, we encounter denial (concealment) of the Holocaust in history even during the course of the war. Here the author intends to emphasize the basic limits of his own theme. It is not the Holocaust as a historical event - the extermination of European Jewry by means of National Socialist politics in the years 1939-45 - but rather the literary works representing these events. The methodological point of departure is the theory of fictional worlds (Lubomír Doležel etc.), and what interests us is the transfer of actual events into possible and fictional worlds, the representation of the results of that crossover in literary works. The work is divided into four chapters. After delimiting the approaches terminologically and theoretically, each focuses on a functional approach to the given representation. The Holocaust is investigated in this manner in three main chapters: the Holocaust as testimony, the Holocaust as a limit situation and the Holocaust as a literary transduction. The Holocaust as testimony devotes...

Abstract:
This thesis in its theoretical part deals with psychoanalytic and poststructural - ie posthumanistic views on the three interrelated, but in some aspects contradictory concepts of love, desire and jouissance. These concepts are examined as components (as will be pointed out) of not merely traditionally depicted heterosexual relationships. The above mentioned aspects considering the concept of love are mythology and constructedness, afterthat with respect to the concept of desire the aspect is the never-ending postponement, and in the view of jouissance the aspects are the loss and fragmentation of the self, its relationship to Freudian libido, and to the death instinct. This thesis traces the development of forms of the above concepts used by the psychoanalytic and poststructuralist authors such as Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Jacques Derrida, Judith Butler, Luce Irigaray, Hélène Cixous and Julia Kristeva, in their primary texts and also takes account of how they are received in the secondary literature. The theoretical part is therefore based on the scrutinization of primary texts and relevant secondary literature on these issues in the field of philosophy, gender and cultural studies and feminist and critical theory. Abstract:
This thesis examines the translation of stylization of orality in the context of linguistics, the development of language and literature as well as translation theory. Three contemporary Czech novels and their translations are analyzed in regard to their oral features. The statistical analysis applies selected elements, that are characterized in specialized literature as typical for orality. It explores their incidence using a corpus analysis method. As concerns the source texts, the results show differences regarding the levels of language and groups of lexemes, which indicates an individual stylization. This is, to a lesser extent, true of the target texts as well, notwithstanding the fact that they show a greater uniformity overall. A contrastive comparison leads to the conclusion, that oral features with more commonality in Czech tend to be neutralized to a greater extent. A functional analysis of orality is also carried out. Its aim is to characterize the impression (Wirkung) of orality in a given passage and distinguish between the so called adapted and mimetic kinds of orality. The analysis follows its own model and points to, amongst other things, a special role of Common Czech (obecná čeština) and of particles as well as adverbs devoid of meaning in German. It becomes clear, that the...

1 Abstract The main aim of the thesis is to introduce the problematics of Czech translations from Irish literature published in the Czech Lands in the period between 1945 - 2014. The author of the thesis provides the list of the authors that were translated in the Czech Lands in that period, and comments upon the literary tradition related to it. Due to the extensive amount of works, the thesis is divided into several chapters, introducing four specific periods: 1945 - 1948 (the end of WWII - the beginning of the Soviet control), 1949 - 1968 (Soviet control - the occupation of the Troops of Warsaw Pact), 1969 - 1989 (the occupation - Velvet Revolution) and 1989 - 2014 (Velvet Revolution - "Velvet Divorce" - the present day). In each chapter the historic introduction is provided mainly to foreshadow the context of the whole era. The discussion about the translations from Irish literature consists from general list of works by individual authors and comments upon their presence at the Czech literary market, the frequency of publishing, the reception of individual authors etc. The author also considers the socio-political occurences that might have influenced the final shape of the Irish-Czech literary canon, and, when possible, tries to demonstrate the extent of such influence.

Abstract:
ANNOTATION This submitted thesis is to record the picture of World War I in fiction comparing Czech and Austrian literature. Connections are supposed to be based on historical- cultural contacts and close geographical vicinity in both conceptions. A comparative study of the representative texts which relate to a specific key stage of common history should confirm or doubt these connections. In the introduction the reality of the war conflict, its main consequences and the concrete situation in Bohemian countries is outlined, which serves the purpose of depicting of the atmosphere of the period and simultaneously better understanding of the meaning of literature works. Subsequently the list of basic texts which became the firm part of the common knowledge of given problems is created and at the same time the aspect of the common thematic units is pointed out. And finally two key works of both national branches of literature were chosen and compared analytically. Both principal themes - the attitude towards war, and main motive complexes and the general way of narration are emphasized. The aim of the thesis is not to present the complete list of works dealing with war but to confront literature depiction of the war in Austria and Bohemia from comparable points of view.

In the presented thesis I focused on the translations (specifically between Czech and German) of a particular literary movement, that appeared in the first half of the 20th century - of magic(al) realism. As for the topic and metodological directing of the thesis, it falls within the history of translation. The main aim is to present the original literary production of magical realism in the German speaking countries and in Bohemia and to demonstrate, to what extent the both cultural areas have connected during the existence of magical realism by means of translations. The research is led especially with quantitative respect - I primarily focus on collecting of the originals and their translations (if there are any). By the existing translations I studied mainly the cultural-historical context of their origin and their eventual integration into the literary tradition of the target culture. Finding out the number of existing translations proceeded in form of extensive searches in the national libraries. It shows itself that only ca. one third of the so called magical realist titles was translated from German into Czech so far. From the Czech titles around a half came out in German. It is based on the analysis and subsequent comparison diaries of Ivan Diviš and Pavel Juráček and the memory of Vaclav Černý and Ota Filip. Additionally, this paper examines how these writers created an image of the 1960s and early 1970s.mFurther exploration includes narrative elements, for example, by what means texts are constructed, character space time, composition, and relationship to the audience. Moreover, the meaning of writing autobiographical literature, specifically the selected works, will be explored. Lastly, these major themes set the stage for the comprehensive analysis of the authors' works, revealing the creative design, history, society and culture of their time.

Abstract:
This thesis concentrates on the capturing of the portrayal of the Czech prehistory in the German literature, by the German-speaking authors originating from the Czech countries as well as in the Czech literature. The term 'Czech prehistory' is approached in terms of the Czech tales, with emphasis laid on the character of Princess Libussa (Libuše). The span of the thesis reaches from the Englightenment to the argument about the authenticity of the Rukopis královédvorský (Manuscript from Dvůr Králové) and the Rukopis zelenohorský (Manuscript from Zelená hora) in the 1880s. The thesis is divided into two parts. First, the development trends of the representation of the Czech prehistory are chronologically presented. The literary-historical development is discussed in relation to the changes in the concepts of German and Czech patriotism and nationalism. There is also a focus on the development of poetics and the shifts in the reception of prehistory during the periods of Enlightenment, Romanticism and Biedermeier. The changes in the character of Princess Libussa are compared of the possibilities of literary portrayal of Rübezahl (Krakonoš), the mythical ruler of the Giant Mountains, in literary works claiming allegiance to German or Czech patriotism and nationalism. Abstract:
The key feature of realism in drama is capturing a person including all it's problems and flaws. Authors L. N. Tolstoj and Mrštík brothers in Government of darkness and Marysha congruently focused on life in countryside and the negative, almost destructive, way in which cities and their culture influence it. The aim of this thesis was to capture the main motives in the changes of life in Russian and Czech countryside. This analysis concludes that the most significant shifts are in peoples' morals, mostly due to the fact that both individuals as well as the whole society were intensively driven to earn and accumulate wealth, even at the cost of happiness, health or, sadly, human life. Tolstoj's drama also captures in more detail and depth abandonment of religion in pursuit of personal profit. Although the religious motive is an inherent part of rural mentality, it's mostly missing in the play by Mrštík brothers, who themselves were atheist. Significant space in those plays has been dedicated to female characters. They are described as either dominant, manipulative women with clear goals, or the authors emphasize their vulnerability and lack of experience. Matrjona and Lízalka are mature women whose main goal is to financially provide for their childs without any regard for their children's...

Full text
Abstract:
I situate Škvorecký’s novel as both a primary document in the historical record of transitional justice and as a literary creation in the author’s larger oeuvre. In creating this work of autobiographical fiction, Škvorecký deals with the ambiguities of a tumultuous historico-political moment and creates an appropriately complex work of art. I combine social science research with close-reading of the text in the tradition of new historicism. In the introduction I explain the historico-political background, specifically transitional justice and lustration in Czech Republic in the early 1990s, that engendered Two Murders. In my first chapter, I examine the book reviews, Czech and English, that appeared following the two language-respective publications of Two Murders. In the remaining three chapters I present my analysis of the novel based on close-reading and applied historical information. Chapters two and three discuss different but interconnected manifestations of distance. Chapter two examines memory as the temporal distance of the mind, while chapter three explores exile as spatial distance. Škvorecký invests memory and exile with enormous significance, and uses both concepts to depict his characters’ isolation. In the final chapter, I discuss rumor and reputation in the novel’s two distinct story-lines, demonstrating how they come together to create a cohesive artistic work. Approaching the novel as both a historical document and a work of art, I hope to critically examine this complicated historical moment and appraise Škvorecký’s contribution to the post-communist Czech dialogue.

1 Mgr. Alena Fry Dissertation Abstract Edgar Allan Poe in Czech Reception: Translation and Interpretation History The doctoral thesis investigates the history of Edgar Allan Poe's reception in Czech culture from the 1850s to the present. Its aim is to scrutinize how the author's image has been shaped and reshaped over the course of time by various book editions, interpretive approaches and key translations, and what socio-cultural, literary or individual factors contributed to these transformations. The thesis is intended to contribute to the understanding of the history of Czech literary translation and of Czech literature's intercultural affinities. Chapter 1 defines the research goal, presents the theoretical background and outlines the structure of the thesis. It reveals the inseparableness of Poe's image as the author and the man, i.e. the Poe "myth" that started developing during Poe's lifetime, and the necessity to also account for it when studying his Czech reception. Chapter 2 focuses on the period up to the early 1890s and examines the earliest interpretations. These were strongly influenced by R. W. Griswold's infamous "Memoir" and dwelt mainly on the circumstances of Poe's life. Furthermore, the chapter provides an overview of the first prose and poetry translations which were occasionally...

This thesis deals with the reception of a German-language elucidarium in the Czech and subsequently Ukrainian literary environments. It acquaints the reader with the history of the work, which originates from the Latin theological tract Elucidarium by Honorius Augustodunensis from the end of the 11th century. It deals with the conception of the German Lucidarius, which was created as one of the first medieval works in the national language at the end of the 12th century and is considered to be the first German-language encyclopedia. This thesis presents the Lucidarius as an originally produced compilation created via the translation and adaptation of several Latin treatises from the fields of theology, philosophy, cosmology, geography, and history. In the Czech environment, Lucidář, translated from German, appears at the latest in the mid-15th century and is a work that enjoyed the interest of lower classes of readers until as late as the early 19th century. The Czech Lucidář carries significance in terms of inter-Slavic literary ties - via translation, a Croatian elucidarium (15th century) and Ukranian elucidarium (16th -17th century) were created. Abstract:
The goal of the work advanced is to examine the problems of the Czech literary decadence, the term itself and the possible limits of its use. As a basic material we investigate a corpus of texts belonging mainly to the short story genre, also paying attention to the model of a decadent novel and being interested in the most significant decadent features. The problems of literary decadence do not belong to profoundly explored topics in the history of the Czech literature, incidentally conditioned by the preference of the symbolist and decadent poetry. That is why this work was to present some texts themselves, potentially representative for the model of a decadent short story genre and of certain artistic value. The text of this work consists of three main parts. The first presents the possibilities of progressive insight into the topic, its cultural and philosophical context, showing two model novels (Huysmans{\crq} A Rebours and Wilde{\crq}s The Picture of Dorian Gray) as different but relevant types of the decadent living scheme, the specific conception of life and the role of art in it. The second part applies several theoretical questions onto the topic, constructing the form. In the final part more than two tens of original Czech short stories are concerned and the thematic composition analysed, that at least some questions asked in the previous parts could be answered and certain theses postulated proved.

For this reason, the first part of the work deals with the definition of young adult literature and the presentation of common genres, as well as the brief history and its influence on adolescents. Through interviews with the representatives from the three selected publishers that publish the young adult titles, we have found out which place this literary sector occupies in the Czech book market. The main achievement we have learned is the fact that although the young adult is a relatively new term for the Czech environment, even in the few years that we have encountered, it has become a relatively well-established concept. Young people choose titles with lighter motives, but books that solve more demanding themes are often searched by readers in the long term for several years after their release. Even though the number of Czech young adult titles is still increasing, it is often translated literature....
