Abstract:
Inspired by the concept of “transpersonality” in contemporary psychology, this study seeks to expand its possible meanings – not only in relation to the sometimes overly mystical current ecocritical strands of thought, but even more significantly, in relation to contemporary trends in essayistic or experimental cinema. The study achieves this by analysing the films of three Czech and Slovak female directors, who are united by their ecological concerns stemming from the theme of (the planet as) home. Compared to more traditional examples of ecocriticism in these two local cinemas, the films ana

The article identifies five recurrent themes through which older men construct their identities and discusses these outcomes in relation to the debate concerning the nature of gender order in the contemporary Czech Republic. First language attrition has been shown to affect many areas of linguistic performance in immigrants to other countries. In phonetics, there is often a shift towards the majority language phonetic features, and, in some cases, the speakers may cease to be perceived as native altogether. This article presents the results of a foreign accent rating study, showing that even Anglophone expatriates are not immune to L1 attrition despite the (relative) lack of pressure to linguistically assimilate due to the status of their mother tongue as a prestigious and desirable-to-master language. Raised in Polička’s St. James Church tower, in the Bohemian-Moravian highlands, Martinů’s isolated upbringing had profound effects on his composition style, emphasizing “space and nature” over human elements. His exposure to Czech folk songs influenced his musical lexicon, and despite his struggle at the Prague Conservatory, the cultural life there shaped his creative identity. The second part analyzes texts that treat Jerusalem as a destination for personal pilgrimage. The closing section deals with texts that rethink the city as an imagined entity.
