Abstract:

The theory of minor literature (based on Kafka’s hybrid identity in Prague) is applicable to the complex case of Czech and Slovak-Romani writing, including fictional portrayals of the Roma. The Irish-American writer Colum McCann’s Zoli, published in 2006, features a Slovak-Roma woman who becomes an acclaimed poet under the Communist regime, only to be cast out by her community and forced into exile. Two years later, Irena Eliášová (a Roma writer born in Slovakia who lives in the Czech Republic) published her novel Our Settlement (Naše osada), a far more affectionate view of the Roma society of her childhood. Both writers walk an uneasy balance in presenting Slovak-Roma culture from both insider and outsider perspectives. In McCann’s case the intention of bringing one of Europe’s most misunderstood minorities to anglophone readers struggles to avoid cultural appropriation, while Eliášová’s use of multilingualism negotiates the power dynamics between Czech, Slovak, and Romani.

Abstract:

Abstract In the netherlands regional novels have never been considered as real literary works. in Flanders regional literature had a better status, especially because several writers of the Van Nu en Straks movement such as Stijn Streuvels wrote about regional themes. in Czech literature since 1848 regional themes was viewed as important in novels and stories, mainly till the end of world war ii. in 1932 the Catholic writer Antonín Matula defined the so-called ruralism, which became a movement of mainly Catholic writers from the countryside. Most of them were severely persecuted in a constructed Stalinist show trial against the green international in 1951. in his work Hlasy země v evropských literaturách (The Voice of Earth in European Literatures, 1933) Matula discussed nearly all major european literatures, i.e. Flemish regional writers. it is no coincidence that especially Flemish writers such as ernest Claes, Stijn Streuvels and Felix timmermans, were translated into Czech during the second quarter of the 20th century.

Abstract:

The paper aims to introduce research in the field of the literary imagology and text semiotics. It focuses on the analysis of the creation of “autoimage”, or rather a self-image, and “hereroimage”, or a counter-mage, the image of otherness, as a means of shaping national identity, by interpreting the artistic texts written by the Czech writer Jáchym Topol and the Russian writer Vladimir Sorokin. It pays attention particularly to their novels from the first decade of the 21st century. The texts will be compared in a broader context of social discourse. Moreover, it will address the issue of the disproportion between the intensity of attention of one nation to another (Czech-Russian and Russian-Czech) and the differences in the perception of cultural distance.

Abstract:

The article is devoted to the assessment of the “Russian” aspect in Czech history and culture based on the prose of Jaroslav Rudiš. Jaroslav Rudiš, one of the most prominent contemporary Czech writers, was born in Turnov (1972). Since the publishing of “The Sky under Berlin” (2002), his work has positively attracted the attention of critics and has won a wider community of readers, which is evidenced by several reprints of his books and a considerable interest in the new one. Jaroslav Rudiš distinguishes himself from the other modern Czech authors by the ability to soberly, aptly and relevantly describe the problems of contemporaries. His characters are people who personally experienced the “whiff ” of the history and felt changes in Czech society over the second half of the 20th century. Despite the fact that Rudiš does not write explicitly about Russia, does not talk about the eternal themes of Russian philosophy and culture and does not discuss positive or negative aspects of Russian influence on international politics, he shows the impact of the “Russian” aspect on the course of the newest Czech history quite accurately and ironically, although infrequently. Russia and the “Russian” in the prose of the author are mentioned in connection with the events in the lives of individual heroes who perceive the Russian aspect as given and periodically interacting with their lives depending on the circumstances. The views of his characters are ambiguous: they are not strictly negative with regard to important events, but they are not thoughtlessly positive, when the breathtaking spirit and depriving rational thinking of the wonderful creative ability of the Russian soul are praised. The tonality of Rudiš’s prose is comparable to Dovlatov’s irony of the “Reserve” or to the poetry of the Yerofeyev’s “Moscow − Petushki”. The study of Rudish’s prose was carried out by the method of excerpt from the available Czech texts of the writer. Axiological characteristics (more than 120 citations from 7 works of the author) relevant for representing the image of the “Russian” in Czech literature were analyzed from the point of view of imagological criteria.the religious feeling.

Swarms of people and lots of water – Czech people on the Dutch landscapeThe paper concerns the image of Dutch scenery in several travel messages of Czech people from the 17th through the 20th centuries. The paper starts with the presentation of two diaries written in the 17th century by the Counts Sternberg and the Protestant Hartmann. One of the first real Czech tourists of the 19th century Josef Štolba is the third author discussed in this study. Then, the paper focuses on the better-known writer Karel Čapek and ends with the discussion of two 20th-century travellers. The paper aims to show which elements are constant in the Czech picture of the Dutch landscape throughout the centuries.

Abstract:

Abstract The article studies the major stages in the life of the Czech journalist and writer Václav Hladík. This native of Prague died prematurely in 1913. In particular, the study tries to demonstrate his connections to another remarkable figure of cultural transfer – Hanuš Jelínek. In the first place, these included his work for the literary periodical Lumír, followed by his activities in the area of Czech-French relations. It was Hladík that introduced Jelínek to Parisian salons. The paper draws attention to personal continuity as well as a qualitative shift in Czech Francophilia at the turn of the 20th century.

Abstract:

This paper builds on the notion of crypto-languages, or hidden languages, to narrate the author’s coming to writing and translation. His novels are discussed as all including one aspect or another of crypto-language. For example, Russian becomes the key to salvation for Sonya, who doesn’t know how to speak it, in Sonya & Jack, and a clinical psychologist in the former Yugoslavia admits in The Speaking Cure to knowing that his patients lie to him, but that behind every lie lies the truth. The author himself learned the difference between “real” foreign languages—French, German or Spanish—and cryto-languages—Polish, Czech or Yiddish—during his childhood in Chicago. The experience of learning French forged in him the desire to write, which in turn created the desire to translate that is described here as a kind of voyeurism. The title of the paper refers to the feeling one has while reading some translated fiction: “I can do better than that!” Translation, as a form of writing, can improve the original by correcting various mistakes, in the logic of the plot, for instance. But there is a difference between writing and translating: the writer writes to find out how the story will end but the translator already knows. As a result, the best way for a writer to translate is to resist reading the book before starting the translation.

L’écrivain tchèque Jan Cep (1902-1974), qui compta au nombre des médiateurs importants des rapports culturels franco-tchèques dans l’entre-deux-guerres, fut, à la suite du Coup de Prague en 1948, contraint à quitter son pays. Ami et traducteur de Pourrat et de Bernanos, il choisit naturellement la France comme patrie d’adoption. L’exil parisien s’avère pour Cep une rude épreuve existentielle. Conditions matérielles dures, déracinement linguistique, manque d’écho favorable pour son oeuvre, tout cela fait que Cep vit en marge de la vie littéraire française. Il s’engage d’autant plus dans diverses structures de l’émigration tchèque, notamment dans la rédaction tchécoslovaque de Radio Free Europe où il déploie son art de l’essai dans des méditations imprégnées d’humanisme chrétien. L’essai autobiographique Ma soeur l’angoisse que Cep écrivit directement en français dans les années 1960, représente la somme de sa vie et de sa pensée<br>The Czech writer Jan Cep (1902-1974), one of important mediators of French-Czech cultural relations between the two World Wars, was forced to emigrate after the Communist coup in 1948. As Cep was the friend and translator of Pourrat and Bernanos, he naturally chose France as his adoptive homeland. Nevertheless, exile in Paris turned into a harsh existential ordeal for Cep. Difficult material conditions, linguistic disunity, and the fact that his writing was not accepted by a new audience made Cep an outsider in a French literary life. This status led to his increased involvement in the Czech émigré community, especially work on the Czechoslovak editorial staff of Radio Free Europe, where he developed his essay style in meditations infused with Christian humanism. The autobiographical essay My Sister Anxiety, written in French in the 1960s, repesents a summary of Cep’s life and ideas<br>Ceský spisovatel Jan Cep (1902-1974), jeden z významných prostredníku meziválecných cesko-francouzských kulturních vztahu, byl po komunistickém puci v roce 1948 prinucen k emigraci. Jako prítel a prekladatel Pourratuv a Bernanosuv si za svou adoptivní vlast zcela prirozene zvolil Francii. Parížský exil se však Cepovi stal drsnou existenciální zkouškou. Tvrdé materiální podmínky, jazyková rozpolcenost, neprijetí jeho díla novým publikem, to vše je prícinou, že Cepuv exil se odehrál na okraji francouzského literárního života. O to více se Cep zapojoval do ruzných struktur ceské emigrace. Zcela mimorádný byl jeho prínos v ceskoslovenské redakci Rádia Svobodná Evropa, kde rozvinul své umení eseje v meditacích skrz naskrz proniklých krestanským humanismem. Die „Wege zum Neutschechischen“, die Tat’ána Vykypělová nachverfolgt, haben ebenso innersprachliche wie äußere – gesellschaftliche, politische und im „langen 16. Jahrhundert“ (S. 57) vor allem konfessionelle – Ursachen. Vf. strebt in ihren kenntnisreichen und sprachgeschichtlich weitsichtigen „Studien zur Geschichte der tschechischen Schriftsprache“ deshalb eine neue „synthetische“ Darstellung der Sprachgeschichte an, die äußere und innere Faktoren aufeinander bezieht (S. 19f.). The master thesis František Šimáček (1834-1885), the Journalist and Publisher tries to introduce an important person of the Czech nationalistic movement of the 1850's-1880's from different aspects, i. e. concerning his activity in the fields of journalism, publishing, national movement, national economy and his family life. General research method used in the thesis is biographically focused analysis of the primary sources, mainly private correspondence and other documents from collections of the Literary Archive of the Museum of Czech Literature, the National Museum Library and the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures. Based on the method, the chronological construction of history of Šimáček's life, his public and professional activities was outlined. Sufficient literature concerning the topic which would analyse in detail scope of activities of František Šimáček in the context of the Czech intellectual milieu in the 19th century is unfortunately lacking in the meantime. Fragmentarily preserved archival documents do not allow us to follow Šimáček's public contacts with all important actors of the Czech cultural and political life in the 19th century. Abstract:

This master's thesis deals with the media response to the Writers Convention that took place on 5 and 6 June 2015 in Prague. This convention was the first meeting of that name in the post-communist era. By naming it such, the organizers claimed a clear succession to conventions that happened before the year 1989 - especially to those in 1956 and 1967, which became important turning points not only culturally, but also politically. The 2015 Convention was organized by Writers Association - a professional organization established in November 2014. One of the reasons why it was founded was the conviction that the organisation named Writers Union, existing from 1989, is not functional anymore and does not sufficiently represent authors' interests. The first two chapters inquiry into the history of both of these organizations with the aim to identify problematic aspects in their operations. Through their media reflection, the history, activities and themes with which they deal are introduced. The aim is to show the broader issue of official writers associations as well as the relevance of the Writers Association as an organization representing the literary public. TITLE: Morphological Variation in Spoken and Written Communication of Pupils from the Sixth to the Ninth Grade in the Central Bohemian Dialect Region AUTHOR: Pavel Sojka DEPARTMENT: Czech Language Department, Faculty of Education in Prague SUPERVISOR: PhDr. Ladislav Janovec, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation presents the results of the research in the morphological variation in the spoken and written expression of primary-school pupils (sixth-to-ninth graders) within the central Bohemian dialect region. The impetus behind this research is the long-standing requirement for linguistic examination to pay attention not only to the language of adults, but also to that of pupils and students. From the viewpoint of pedagogy, it establishes the extent to which the speech of children and youth features typical morphological tendencies of contemporary Czech, from the viewpoint of linguistics, it verifies the extent to which schooling manages to fulfill one of the crucial goals of linguistic education, i.e. appropriation of the standardized form of national language. The topic of the dissertation is the communication of the deaf in written Czech. The theoretical part presents the studies of written Czech for the deaf which have been carried out in the Czech Republic so far, considers the causes of difficulties the deaf encounter when making Czech written texts, and deals with the position of written Czech in the education of the deaf. The next part is devoted to the Czech sign language, the characteristics of its specifics and its role in the communication and education of deaf pupils, especially in connection with the currently valid legislation. Attention is also focused on the components and construction of narrative texts and on the acquisition of narrative competencies in spoken and sign languages. The research part is focused on the qualitative analysis of narrative texts in Czech, the authors of which are deaf pupils of two primary schools for the hearing impaired aged 14 to 16, and which were created on the basis of a picture story. As part of the analysis of written narratives, attention is focused on the specific features which make the written texts of the deaf different from the texts written by hearing Czechs. This thesis presents the personality of Vaclav Cerny and his personal library. First, the author turns the Černý's professional resume. The second part focuses on the critical activities readership portrait and popular heroes. Another part is defined Černý's personal library, general characteristics, its formation, the ways in which Černý harvested books, his work with books, literature review, and libraries that Černý visited during his life. in English: Keywords: literary analysis, imagology, Czech migrant writers, Dutch literature, Jana Beranová, Jan Stavinoha The diploma thesis aims to explore the portrayal of Czech characters and the Czechoslovakia in Dutch-language works written by authors of Czech origin, namely in selected novels by Jana Beranová and Jan Stavinoha. The principal research questions are: 1. What motifs typical of migrant literature might be identified in the analysed novels? 2. How are the Czech characters portrayed? 3. How is the Czechoslovakia portrayed? Is the portrayal of the country of origin contrasted with that of the country of arrival, i.e. the Netherlands? The theoretical framework of the diploma thesis focuses on Dutch migrant literature and socio-political environment in Czechoslovakia from 1945 until present. The method used in the thesis is based on imagology and structural analysis. The practical part provides an analysis of the novels Nu delen we een geheim (1992) by Jana Beranová and In goede handen (1984) by Jan Stavinoha. As the analysis illustrates, the two novels include features of migrant literature as described in critical sources, such as the depiction of oppression in one's homeland, the life between two cultures and the difficulty of overcoming the language barrier. TARTAKOVSKAYA, A., Conjunctions in spoken and written Czech Faculty of arts Charles University in Prague, 2012 Supervisor: Václav Cvrček, Ph.D. Number of pages: 74 + 6 attachments Key words: Conjunctions, written Czech language, spoken Czech language, word link, Czech National Corpus, secondary linking conjunctions, co-coordinating linking conjunctions Conjunctions in Czech language are still relatively poorly described in manuals and grammar books. The aim of the thesis is to investigate conjunctions in spoken and written language, their usage both in texts and in relations with neighboring words, further to compare their usage in written and spoken language. Theoretical background of this thesis is based on several works, which are devoted to this issue, either in whole or to some of its parts. However, the work itself is driven by the Czech National Corpus (hereafter CNC), namely the corpora SYN2005 and ORAL2008. First chapter deals with CNC and conjunctions in general, second investigates secondary linking conjunctions, their use in text types and surrounding words. The content of the third chapter incorporates the connecting conjunctions.

Proof of this was provided on the occasion of the celebrations for the fortieth anniversary of the events in Czechoslovakia in 1968, greeted all over Europe including Italy by a packed programme of conferences, exhibitions and publications. This book too stemmed from an initiative organised to mark the anniversary, the conference entitled Primavera di Praga, risveglio europeo. Through the reflections of twelve Italian and Czech writers, it aims to help in the recollection and reconstruction of what was, despite its limitations and contradictions, at once the most considered and the most generous attempt at reform of real socialism.

Abstract:

The text is a reflection of a well-researched professional publication by Tomáš Rataj České země ve stínu půlměsíce (Czech Lands in the Shadow of the Crescent, 2002). After a multilateral acknowledgement of the book, the author fills in relevant items written by some of the staff of the Faculty of Arts MU, some of which were published only after the publication of Rataj’s work. Additionally, she refines, with reference to the study of Jan Kumpera (1994), the existence of a translation of the Bible into Turkish initiated by Comenius, namely its printing in the 19th century. At the end, the author mentions her personal teaching activities on the topic in the context of the honoured person of Jan Zouhar’s personality as a pedagogical ideal.

Abstract:

In January 2018, Masaryk University archives obtained an extensive written estate of Robert Konečný (1906–1981), an associate professor of philosophy and professor of psychology at Masaryk University, the pioneer of health-care psychology in Czechoslovakia, a poet and author, and a major figure of resistance to Nazism. Robert Konečný’s personal files, which belong among the best preserved items in the university archives, were organized and made accessible during 2018. Extensive correspondence mainly includes collections of letters from key figures of Czech literature, philosophy and psychology. A remarkable part of the estate consists of texts of Konečný’s lectures and speeches as well as documents on his educational activity in radio and television broadcasting. The files also represent a valuable source for the study of resistance to Nazism in Moravia. An extensive set of manuscripts, typescripts and prints from the fields of psychology, philosophy and literature can serve as a basis for the preparation of Konečný’s bibliography.

Abstract:

There are numerous national minorities in Croatia supported by the state in their maintenance of minority languages, cultures and traditions. And many of these minorities with songs, dance and customs cherish their own literature, meaning poetry, prose, and drama written by their members in minority languages or in Croatian. These works are mostly known among members of the minorities, but sometimes it is difficult to find the way to readers of the majority of the population. An example of such a minority literature with a long tradition is literary creation of the Czech, who have been living in today’s Croatia for over two hundred years. Nowadays regularly or occasionally there are about thirty authors who write mostly in Czech, but to come to the readership, some of them have been translating their work into the Croatian language lately or leaving their mother tongue and starting to create in Croatian. Are Croatia’s minority works known and to what extent? What are the possibilities of writers using minority languages to publish their works? Why are minority literary works important, what can they offer to a broader readership and in what way can they enrich Croatian literature? How could they reach the majority population and could they wake up the interest beyond Croatian borders? And what difficulties do minority writers encounter? In the presentation, we will use the example of Czech minority literary works in Croatia to answer these and other issues related to minority literature emerging in Croatia, but remaining unknown to the Croatian public.

Abstract:

This paper presents the findings of a frequency analysis of modal verbs and their complementation in 390 English school-leaving essays written by Czech secondary-school students in a high-stakes B1 level exam. These constitute a learner corpus, CZEMATELC 2017. The study reveals a very high proportion of correct complementation patterns, but predominantly with lexical verbs at A1 and A2 CEFR levels. The most frequent errors are the complementation of modal verbs by past-tense forms of lexical verbs and the absence of complementation.

Abstract:

During the second half of the 20th century, there was a shift in focus in second-language-acquisition research from linguistic competence to communicative and pragmatic competence (Hymes 1972, Canale & Swain 1980, Bachman 1990, Bachman & Palmer 1996, Usó-Juan & Martínez-Flor 2006). This resulted in a growing number of studies on speech acts in general. Motivated by a lack of studies on the speech acts of apology in conversations of Czech learners of English as a foreign language, my study aims to shed light on request and apology strategies used by Czech university students. The aim of this paper is to present the findings of a pilot investigation into the speech acts of apology and request. The first aim of the study is to compare two data collection techniques: the open-ended written discourse completion task (DCT) and the oral production task (OPT). The second aim is to investigate the use of request and apology strategies by Czech learners of English. The findings suggest that both of the data collection techniques produced very similar data. In terms of requests, most respondents opted for a conventional indirect strategy. In terms of apologies, respondents opted for statements of remorse, offers of repair and account.

Abstract:

The paper is a refl ection on the differences between the development of Czech, Croatian, and Polish literatures. Despite the jurisdiction of the Western Church, the Cyrillo-Methodian mission created conditions for the adoption of Slavonic writ-ing in Bohemia and Croatia. While in Croatia Slavonic writing gained traction, the Slavic-speaking community of Bohemia chose to adopt Latin as the sole literary language. The literary beginnings in Poland, which had most likely not been affect-ed by the Cyrillo-Methodian mission, represents yet another scenario. The study of different conditions leading to the adop-tion of a language of literacy and textual community presents an opportunity to ponder how we study and describe a literary process in general, as well as how we understand the concept of a “national literature” and whether this concept should apply only to literature in the vernacular.
