During 2017, the Cassini fluxgate magnetometer made in situ measurements of Saturn’s magnetic field at distances ~2550 ± 1290 kilometers above the 1-bar surface during 22 highly inclined Grand Finale orbits. These observations refine the extreme axisymmetry of Saturn’s internal magnetic field and show displacement of the magnetic equator northward from the planet’s physical equator. Persistent small-scale magnetic structures, corresponding to high-degree (>3) axisymmetric magnetic moments, were observed. This suggests secondary shallow dynamo action in the semiconducting region of Saturn’s

This paper concerns a mechanics of interactions of helical structures in proteins. Helices are the most important secondary structures of proteins and contribute the formation of a more complex 3-D structure, and so the analysis of interactions of helices is quite critical. We examine 1290 protein structures that have 2.0 Å or better resolutions and less than 20 percent of their sequences in common. Interactions between helices are represented by two parameters: the distance and angle. Assuming that helices are slender rigid rods with finite length, we define three different mechanisms of inte

Rashid al-Din Tabib (d. 1318) was born into a Jewish medical family and raised between waves of Mongol conquest in Iran. By 1297, he rose to the highest level of administration in the new Mongol state. This chapter traces the first half century of Rashid al-Din’s life through the societies in which it unfolded. These include the Jewish community of Hamadan, the Ismaʿili fortresses of northern Iran, and ultimately the new concentration of professional and political elites at the Mongol court. Rashid al-Din’s family struck a close alliance with a particular branch of the Mongol ruling family. When one member of that family, Ghazan Khan (1295-1304) came to the throne, Rashid al-Din was situated to assume a position of authority.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the cult of Margaret of Cortona (d. 1297). Although the Roman church would not canonize Margaret of Cortona until 1728, both the community of lay penitents with whom she had lived at the church of San Basilio and Cortona's commune wasted no time in establishing, managing, and developing her cult in the generation after her death in 1297. The source that offers the most extensive account of Margaret's life in Cortona and the beginnings of her cult is the Legenda de vita et miraculis Beatae Margaritae de Cortona. This account of Margaret's life from the time she arrived in Cortona until her 1297 death was written by her Franciscan guardian and confessor, Giunta da Bevegnati, and survives in only three medieval copies. One result of Giunta's complex agenda in writing the Legenda—moving from checking Margaret's sincerity and orthodoxy to celebrating her Franciscan-identified sanctity—was the creation of a new model of an ideal lay life: the lay visionary. Giunta stakes his most powerful claims for Margaret's sanctity on the content, fervor, and results of her internal religious life.

Abstract:
Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) above US EPA standards is associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) risk, while Mn toxicity induces parkinsonism. Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA) children have pre- and postnatal sustained and high exposures to PM2.5, O3, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and metals. Young MCMA residents exhibit frontal tau hyperphosphorylation and amyloid-β (Aβ)1–42 diffuse plaques, and aggregated and hyperphosphorylated α-synuclein in olfactory nerves and key brainstem nuclei. We measured total prion protein (TPrP), total tau (T-tau), tau phosphorylated at threonine 181 (P-Tau), Aβ1–42, α-synuclein (t-α-syn and d-α-synuclein), BDNF, insulin, leptin, and/or inflammatory mediators, in 129 normal CSF samples from MCMA and clean air controls. Aβ1–42 and BDNF concentrations were significantly lower in MCMA children versus controls (p = 0.005 and 0.02, respectively). TPrP increased with cumulative PM2.5 up to 5 μg/m3 and then decreased, regardless of cumulative value or age (R2 = 0.56). TPrP strongly correlated with T-Tau and P-Tau, while d-α-synuclein showed a significant correlation with TNFα, IL10, and IL6 in MCMA children. Total synuclein showed an increment in childhood years related to cumulated PM2.5, followed by a decrease after age 12 years R2 = 0.47), while d-α-synuclein exhibited a tendency to increase with cumulated PM2.5 (R2 = 0.30). CSF Aβ1–42, BDNF, α-synuclein, and TPrP changes are evolving in young MCMA urbanites historically showing underperformance in cognitive processes, odor identification deficits, downregulation of frontal cellular PrP, and neuropathological AD and PD hallmarks. Neuroprotection of young MCMA residents ought to be a public health priority.

Abstract:
By 1938, Hitler “had taken over and was dictating the narrative of European history,” Rosenfeld notes. Virginia Woolf's books—including her diary—offer a counter narrative. In March, as Hitler marches into Austria, Woolf finishes Three Guineas. Through her acute sensitivity, she captures the precise world state with a haunting diary image: Hitler and Stalin are “like drops of dirty water mixing” (D 5: 129). Her challenge from 1938 onwards becomes how to keep moving—how to escape being drawn into the mud. In August, as the world waits, suspended, as Hitler pauses at Czechoslovakia’s door, she takes heart from the newly found Diary of the Reverend Francis Kilvert, the Victorian vicar (and poet) from the river Wye. His diary's “gipsy beauty” lives again in the character Mrs. Manresa in Woolf's final novel Between the Acts—as do his amusing cows. Kilvert gives Woolf a lush natural human voice amid the welter of war.

Gregory C. Fu of MIT has devised (J. Am. Chem. Ed. 2007, 46, 6521) reported that Fe salts will catalyze the coupling of sp2 -hybridized Grignard reagents such as 17 with alkyl halides. John Montgomery of the University of Michigan has described (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 9568) the Ni-mediated regio- and enantioselective addition of an alkynes 20 to an aldehyde 19 to give the allylic alcohol 21. In a third example of sp2 - sp3 coupling, Troels Skrydstrup of the University of Aarhus has established (J. Org. Chem. 2007, 72, 6464) that Negishi coupling with alkenyl phosponates such as 23 proceeded efficiently.

Abstract:
Petrobras developed projects with European companies and Brazilian universities in order to study different configurations of steel risers using flexibilization elements. For the bow turret-moored FPSOs the lazy-wave configuration was considered the most adequate due to its structural behaviour and costs when compared to other configurations. A detailed study was performed by the Petrobras R&D Center to verify the structural integrity of a lazy-wave SCR (SLWR) attached to a turret-moored FPSO at a water depth of 1290 m. The results for the installed riser showed its feasibility. Petrobras

Abstract:
Petrobras R&D Center developed feasibility studies of the lazy-wave configuration of steel catenary risers (SLWR) connected to a turret-moored FPSO and to the border of a spread-moored FSO, in Campos Basin, at water depths of 1290m and 1800m, respectively. In both projects the fatigue analysis considered the bimodal/bidirectional characteristics of sea-states. Special methodologies for environmental data statistical treatment and riser fatigue analysis were developed. This paper presents the study performed to evaluate the importance of considering the bimodal/bidirectional characteristic

Abstract:
The critical heat fluxes (CHFs) of subcooled water flow boiling are systematically measured for the flow velocities (u = 4.0 to 13.3 m/s), the outlet subcoolings (ΔTsub, out = 3 to 129 K) and the outlet pressure (Pout = 800 kPa). The SUS304 test tubes of 3, 6, 9 and 12 mm in inner-diameter, d, and 33, 66, 99 and 133 mm in length, L, respectively for L/d = 11 are used. The CHFs first become lower and then become higher with the increase in subcooling. The CHFs for four different inner-diameters with L/d = 11 measured here become higher with the decrease in the diameter. CHF correlation for the l

Abstract:
This paper discusses the impact of the parameter values used for the transport of radionuclides from high-level radioactive waste to the far-field on the long-term safety of a proposed geological disposal in the Boom Clay formation in Belgium. The methodology of the Safety Assessment is explained, and the results of the Safety Assessment for vitrified high-level waste and spent fuel are presented. The radionuclides having the strongest impact on the dose-to-man for both HLW glass and spent fuel are 79Se, 129I, 126Sn, 36Cl, and 99Tc. Some of them are volatile during the vitrification process, o

A number of the key inhibitors of coagulation and fibrinolysis have recently been shown to be members of the same superfamily of serine protease inhibitors, the serpins. The archetypes of the group are alpha-l-antitrypsin and antithrombin and it includes antiplasmin, C1-inhibitor, heparin cofactor II and the newly recognised inhibitors of plasminogen activators and activated Protein C. Alignment of their structures shows that they have the same skeletal three-dimensional conformation and, by inference, the same general function mechanisms. The serpins have a reactive centre, primarily dependent
