Souchen, R. Alexander. "Beyond D-Day: Maintaining morale in the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division June--July 1944." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28698.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis evaluates the "human dimension" of military history and focuses primarily on soldiers from the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division during the first half of the Normandy campaign, 6 June to early July 1944. This study concerns itself with the subject of morale and the individual's experience in war. Therefore, it couples an exploration of the challenging physical and psychological conditions that the infantry confronted in battle, with a discussion of how they coped with, and persevered through, the awful bloodbath beyond D-Day. Five critical and related themes are addressed 1) anticipation versus reality; 2) privation and hardship; 3) improvisation and adaption; 4) coping, culture, and comradeship; and 5) administration and morale. By placing the common soldier at the centre of attention, this thesis reveals an interesting and innovative perspective into a variety of important subjects that are virtually unknown in the relevant historiography.

Abstract:
In August, 1944, the Allies embarked on one of the "two supreme operations of 1944," Operation Anvil/Dragoon. It is an operation that almost did not happen. Envisioned as a direct supporting operation of Overlord, Anvil soon ran into troubles. Other operations taking away resources away from Anvil in addition to opposition from the highest levels of Allied command threatened Anvil. This thesis chronicles the evolution of this debate, as well as shed light on one of the most overlooked and successful operations the Allies embarked on in World War II.

Cheadle, Tanya. "Realizing a 'more than earthly paradise of love' : Scotland's sexual progressives, 1880-1914." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2014. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/5243/.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1889, the Edinburgh-based natural scientist Patrick Geddes predicted a future in which a ‘more than earthly paradise of love’, known previously only to poets and their muses, would be realized. Similar intimations of an imminent utopia of transformed sexual relations were being felt and articulated by other young, progressive men and women in cities across Britain, intent on eradicating what they perceived to be the hypocritical sexual and social conventions of their parents. Within the current historiography, the primary setting for this late-Victorian generational revolt is often considered to be London. This thesis shifts the focus to Scotland, exploring the progressive challenge to Victorian sexual attitudes and behaviour in Glasgow and Edinburgh. It looks in detail at two married couples, Bella and Charles Pearce, and Patrick and Anna Geddes. Both were broadly-speaking feminists and socialists, committed in differing ways to heralding in a new age of egalitarian, altruistic and fraternal relations between the sexes. Both were also responsible for some of the period’s key texts on the Woman Question and the Sex Question, Bella Pearce the editor of ‘Matrons and Maidens’, the first feminist column in a socialist newspaper, and Patrick Geddes the author of 'The Evolution of Sex', a popular science book on the cause of sexual differentiation. Utilizing the methodologies of gender history and the history of sexuality, this thesis analyzes the exact nature of their sexual and gendered discourse, situating it precisely within the wider discursive field of fin de siècle feminist, socialist, scientific, medical, sociological and religious thought. However, it also aims to reflect thoughtfully on the relationship between the couples’ discourse and their subjectivity, examining the ways in which their intimate and social lives affected their ideas about sex. Overall, the thesis argues that whilst in some aspects the sexual and gendered attitudes and behaviour of late-Victorian Scottish sexual progressives were similar to those of feminists and socialists elsewhere in Britain, in other important ways they were different and distinctive. An understanding of them is therefore vital to a full appreciation of the complexities of British progressivism during this period.

Moores, Christopher. "From civil liberties to human rights? : British civil liberties activism, 1934-1989." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2011. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/1760/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is about organizations working in the field of British civil liberties between 1934 and 1989. It examines the relationship between the concepts of civil liberties and human rights within a British context, and discusses the forms of political activism that have accompanied this subject. At the centre of this work is an examination of the politics of the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL), an organization that has played a key role in the protection and promotion of civil liberties from its formation in 1934. It also examines the activities of a range of other organizations that considered themselves to be active on such a subject. The thesis argues that thinking about civil liberties has been extended throughout the twentieth century to incorporate a more positive and broader conceptualization of rights. However, for all the increased importance of the politics of human rights, a tradition of civil liberties has remained crucial to organizations working within such a field. The thesis also seeks to demonstrate that concerns about civil liberties have often reflected the political ideologies of those acting on such issues. Whilst a large amount of conceptual agreement has existed over the importance of the subject within Britain, this has consistently been met with disagreement over what this means. NGOs have played crucial roles as mediators of such a conflict. In performing such a role, the civil liberties lobby has been characterised by a set of professional, expert activists that have, at times, been able and will to engage with radical political ideas.

Etheridge, Stephen. "'Slate-grey rain and polished euphoniums' : southern Pennine brass bands, the working class and the North, c. 1840-1914." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2014. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/24607/.

Full text
Abstract:
Brass Bands have become a clichéd representation of northern working-class culture. Hence, in 1974, Peter Hennessy described a band contest at the Albert Hall: A roll call of the bands is like an evocation of industrial history. From Wingates Temperance and Black Dyke Mills to more modern conglomerates [...]. Grown men, old bandsmen say, have been known to cry at the beauty of it all […]. Of all the manifestations of working-class culture, nothing is more certain than a brass band to bring on an attack of the George Orwells. Even the most hardened bourgeois cannot resist romanticizing the proletariat a little when faced with one. This stereotype, which emerged in the nineteenth century, generated the following research questions: What musical and social elements in the performance of brass band music strengthened working-class cultural identity in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries? How did bands, which thrived in large numbers in the Southern Pennines, emerge as a musical and cultural metonym of the industrial landscape? This thesis therefore examines internal and external reporting of elements of brass musicianship in brass bands that constructed working class and northern identities. An outline of music-making in the north shows how the region supported bands’ development when they began to emerge from the 1830s. Brass musicianship and musical performance strengthened working-class cultural identity. Explorations of musical performances, leisure, rational recreation, social networks, gender and region, all combine to produce a fuller understanding of the northern working class between c.1840 and 1914. Such influences – of class, gender and region – contributed to brass bands producing primary examples of working-class identity. Not only have brass bands been under-explored in the history of leisure, but they also add to the understanding of the origins of stereotypes about working-class culture and northern identity that emerged, and came under scrutiny, in this period.

McDowall, Colin John. "Personalities, politics and power : the British Chiefs of Staff Committee in the Phoney War, 1939-1940." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2017. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/9094/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the Chiefs of Staff Committee’s (COS) decision-making and policy-making influence on Britain during the September 1939 to May 1940 period of the Second World War, commonly known as the Phoney War. To date, the actions of the COS during the Phoney War have come under little scrutiny. Historians have included only passing reference to the committee’s actions during the Winter War and the Norway Campaign, and have argued that its conduct was mired in error and misjudgement. As a consequence there is both confusion and debate over the COS’s contribution to Britain’s conduct in the Phoney War. This thesis contains the first systematic analysis of the influence of the COS on Britain’s course during the Phoney War and it advances the argument that the inadequacies of the committee had a major impact on the planning and conduct of the Phoney War. This study places the COS in the context of Britain’s wider decision-making and policy-making machinery during the Phoney War, where it was answerable to the War Cabinet and responsible for Britain’s defence. It argues that the COS was inadequate as a committee and that it failed to recognise its own limitations and to acknowledge the wisdom of its advisers. While on some occasions the COS provided good advice to the War Cabinet, it failed to press its opinions with sufficient force, particularly when the War Cabinet overlooked its recommendations. Individually, the Chiefs were dominated by both Churchill and Ironside, a factor which consistently undermined the COS’s effectiveness in policy-making and decision-making; Chiefs of Staff Newall and Pound were too easily influenced by Ironside and were insufficiently forceful in exerting their positions. This thesis also proposes that Britain’s organisation for the higher management of the war was weak and that this hindered the effectiveness of the COS; the committee structure during the period September 1939 to May 1940 was overly bureaucratic and this occupied too much of the COS’s time. It concludes that the COS demonstrated inadequacies as a decision-making and policy-making committee, however, while found to be wanting, there were mitigating factors which impinged upon its ability to perform. This thesis’s examination of the COS provides a better understanding of a little documented committee, which, although often overlooked, had a profound influence on Britain’s course during the Phoney War. Through archival research of the COS and War Cabinet papers this study will appraise the COS’s contribution to the unfolding of events between September 1939 and May 1940.

Moss, Jonathan Thomas. "Women, workplace militancy and political subjectivity in Britain, 1968-1985." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7259/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the experiences and political subjectivity of women who engaged in workplace protest in Britain between 1968 and 1985. The study covers a period that has been identified with the ‘zenith’ of trade-union militancy in British labour history. The women’s liberation movement also emerged in this period, which produced a shift in public debates about gender roles and relations in the home and the workplace. Women’s trade union membership increased dramatically and trade unions increasingly committed themselves to supporting ‘women’s issues’. Industrial disputes involving working-class women have frequently been cited as evidence of women’s growing participation in the labour movement. However, the voices and experiences of female workers who engaged in workplace protest remain largely unexplored. This thesis addresses this space through an original analysis of the 1968 sewing-machinists’ strike at Ford, Dagenham; the 1976 equal pay strike at Trico, Brentford; the 1972 Sexton shoe factory occupation in Fakenham, Norfolk; the 1981 Lee Jeans factory occupation in Greenock, Inverclyde and the 1984-1985 sewing-machinists’ strike at Ford Dagenham. Drawing upon a combination of oral history and written sources, this study contributes a fresh understanding of the relationship between feminism, workplace activism and trade unionism during the years 1968-1985. In every dispute considered in this thesis, women’s behaviour was perceived by observers as novel, ‘historic’ or extraordinary. But the women did not think of themselves as extraordinary, and rather understood their behaviour as a legitimate and justified response to their everyday experiences of gender and class antagonism. The industrial disputes analysed in this thesis show that women’s workplace militancy was not simply a direct response to women’s heightened presence in trade unions. The women involved in these disputes were more likely to understand their experiences of workplace activism as an expression of the economic, social and subjective value of their work. Whilst they did not adopt a feminist identity or associate their action with the WLM, they spoke about themselves and their motivations in a manner that emphasised feminist values of equality, autonomy and self-worth.

Riley, David Daniel. "UK-US relations and the South Asian crisis, 1971." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2016. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/99792/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates UK-US relations with regard to the South Asian Crisis of 1971. Through a focus on an understudied point of disagreement within the relationship between Prime Minister Edward Heath and President Richard Nixon, the thesis sheds further light on Anglo-American relations in the early 1970s. Through analysis of archival documents on both sides of the Atlantic, this thesis contributes to the growing revisionist literature that has moved away from a focus upon Heath’s pro-Europeanism as the cause of problems in the Anglo-American relationship at the time. Rather, a more nuanced approach that also investigates the impact of the secretive foreign policymaking style of the Nixon White House is taken into account. The thesis reveals the issues in communication and differences of interests that, in December 1971, led the UK and US delegations at the UN Security Council to tacitly advocate for opposite sides of a hot war in South Asia. The thesis assesses the effect that these heated disagreements had upon the Anglo-American relationship going into 1972 and 1973.

This work was elaborated with the objective to show the propose of liberation included in Dussel s Pedagogic and Freire s comparatives elements. Thus, relationship of domination of I from center over the Other from periphery can be transformed through the critical attitude of dominated to not accept the system s impositions. People can only perceive themselves oppressed when learn to see themselves free. In fact, they must develop critical capability to see the world around them. There s the denouncement of oppression as Dussel as Freire and announcement of liberation. In addition, the pedagogic s principle is defended as a thinker as other one as only way that liberation can be obtained. People that seek liberation must, over all, emphasize own culture and critical capability to see the world. Work followed a demonstrative way. From Dussel s theory to practice, Pedagogic with elements of Freire s pedagogy that enrich the practice. Enrique Dussel seeks elements from Hellenic and Semite s culture to understand the latin-american s identity. Both culture base, respectively, domination and liberation. Dussel and Freire find in Semite s éthos the respect by Other, the main attitude to liberation

Europe went back to war in 1939 and on July 19 1940, the U.S. Congress passed the Two-Ocean Navy Act, the largest naval appropriation in American history, which expanded the U.S. Navy by more than seventy per cent in preparation for the United States entry into the war. ‘The two-ocean navy: the U.S. Navy in World War II (1939–1945)’ outlines the key battles fought by the U.S. Navy: in the Pacific from 1941–43, in the Mediterranean from 1943–44, the Central Pacific drive from 1943–44, the D-Day landings in 1944, and the ferocious battles with the Japanese at Iwo Jima and Okinawa that ended the war.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Based on the Object-Oriented Simulation System for 3-D Packing developed by Dai & Cha (1993a), this paper presents an effective heuristic algorithm using the Octree Data Structure for the three-dimensional packing problems of irregular components. It also describes in detail the Tri-Ring Method which is designed for the topology identification of the octree’s construction. For those problems where the total volume of packed items is smaller than that of container, the results of the theoretical analysis and numerical experiments show that the heuristic is excellent both in packing quality and calculation cost. For those problems where the total volume of packed items is larger than that of container, a variant of this method is expected to be also quite effective. The packing of arbitrarily shaped objects is achieved by packing their octrees generated from their EXTENTS or BOUNDING BOXES.

Abstract:
This paper describes the Design, Engineering, Planning and Implementation activities that led up to an advanced, state of the art, optimum and economical solution for expanding an existing system to handle an increase of crude oil throughput from 80 to 117 mta metric tons per year (2.53 t/s to 3.71 t/s). The growing demand and reduced net imports of products will increase Western European crude oil requirements to 11 million b/d (barrel per day) equivalent to 20.24 m3/s by year 2000. SUMED (gulf of SUez - MEDiterranean) the Arab Petroleum Pipelines Company has historically secured about 40% of the market for middle Eastern crude oil movements to Europe. Given these market shares on incremental volume SUMED should achieve its maximum design throughput of 117 mta by year 2000. The SUMED pipelines system which is owned and operated by an Arab company having EGYPT, SAUDI ARABIA, KUWAIT, EMIRATES AND QATAR as share holders has been in operation since 1977. An expansion project has started to increase the throughput capacity of the system from 80 to 117 mta. The project completion is expected by mid 1994 with a total expenditure of 120 million dollars. This paper reviews the evaluation and selection of various electric motor and gas turbines for the main pumping station addition for this pipeline expansion.

Abstract:
Intracranial haemorrhage is the most serious complication of alloimmune neonatal thrombocytopenia (ANT). It has generally been assumed that this occurs during delivery, but evidence is accumulating that intracranial haemorrhage may have already occurred in utero. Management of the pregnancy at risk is therefore more exacting, and it has been suggested that intrauterine platelet transfusions may be of benefit (Daffos et al, Lancet, Li, 632. 1984). We have used this approach in two pregnancies in PlA1 negative mothers with PlA1 positive fetuses affected by ANT. Both were second pregnancies, the first in each case having produced a brain damaged infant due to CNS haemorrhage. First patient (CW): Ultrasound scans of the fetal head at 10,22,28 and 32 weeks were all normal. She was admitted at 35 weeks for fetal sampling and platelet transfusion. Ultrasonography showed dilated ventricles and a left anterior cerebral haematoma. The fetal platelet count was 12 × 109/1,rising after transfusion of PlA1negative platelets to 139 x 109/1. The baby was delivered by Caesarean section and the cord blood platelet count was 126 × 109/1.Subsequent clinical assessment by CT scanning and NMR indicated both recent (1-2 weeks) and older (>4weeks) cerebral haemorrhages (de Vries et al, in press). Second patient (CR): Platelet transfusions were started earlier in this pregnancy. At 26 weeks the fetal platelet count was 32 × 109/1, rising to 160 × 109/1 after platelet transfusion. This was repeated at 27 wk (25 to 280 × 109/1), 29 weeks (5 to 320 × 109/1) and regularly until birth. Before the third platelet transfusion, the mother received intravenous IgG 0.4 g/Kg/d for 5 days, which had no effect on the fetal platelet count. These cases illustrate the potential value of ultrasound-guided intravascular, umbilical cord transfusions of compatible platelets in raising the fetal platelet count in ANT, but emphasise the short duration of this effect (<1 week). As the procedure is so labour intensive, further studies are needed to identify the high risk pregnancies, to determine the optimal time for intervention and to assess the success of this approach.

Abstract:
The increasing advance of the new technologies applied in the retail market, make it common to sell products without the personal contact between seller and buyer, being the registration and payment of the products made in electronic equipment of self-checkout. The large-scale use of these devices forces the consumer to participate in the service process, which was previously done through interaction with the company's employees. The user of the self-checkout system thus performs all the steps of the purchase, from weighing the products, registering them and making the payment. This is seen as a partial employee, whose participation or performance in providing services can be used by the company to improve the quality of its operations (KELLEY, et al 1993). However this participation does not always satisfy the user, and may cause negative experiences related to usability failures. This article presents the results of the evaluation by the users of the self-checkout system. The data were collected in Portugal through a questionnaire to 400 users. The study analyzes the degree of satisfaction regarding the quality and usability of the system, the degree of motivation for its adoption, as well as the profile of the users. Analysis of the sample data reveals that users have basic or higher education and use new technologies very often. They also have a high domain of the system and an easy learning of its use. The reason for using self-checkout instead of the traditional checkout is mainly due to "queues at checkout with operator" and "at the small volume of products". In general, the sample reveals a high degree of satisfaction with the service and with quality, however, in comparative terms, self-checkout is not considered better than operator checkout. The evaluation of the interaction with the self-checkout was classified according to twenty-six attributes of the system. The analysis identifies five groups with similar characteristics, of which two have low scores. "Cancellation of registered articles", "search for articles without a bar code", "manual registration", "bagging area", "error messages", "weight sensor" and “invoice request "are seven critical attributes of the system. The results indicate that the usability analysis oriented to the self-checkout service can be determinant for the user-system interaction. The implications of empirical findings are discussed together with guidelines for future research. Keywords: Interaction Design, Self service, Self-checkout, User evaluation, UsabilityReferencias ABRAHÃO, J., et al (2013).
