Abstract:
We show that the tachyonic kink solution on a pair of D-p-branes in the bosonic string theory can be identified with the D-(p-1)-brane of the same theory. We also speculate on the possibility of obtaining the D-(p-1)-brane as a tachyonic lump on a single D-p-brane. We suggest a possible reinterpretation of the first result which unifies these two apparently different descriptions of the D-(p-1)-brane.

In [12] Slaman and Steel posed the following problem:Assume ZF + DC + AD. Suppose we have a function assigning to each Turing degree d a linear order <d of d. Then must the rationals embed order preservingly in <d for a cone of d's?They had already obtained a partial answer to this question by showing that there is no such d ↦ <d with <d of order type ζ = ω* + ω on a cone. Already the possibility that <d has order type ζ · ζ was left open.We use here, ideas and methods associated with the concept of amenability (of groups, actions, equivalence relations, etc.) to prove some general results from which one can obtain a positive answer to the above problem.

Abstract:
This article analyzes gestural interactions between hearing and d/Deaf Nepalis to argue that local understandings of the consequences of these engagements make visible ways of ideologizing gesture that may be obscured by the gestural typologies widely used by scholars. In Nepal, d/Deafness is associated with ritual pollution that can be shared across persons. Consequently, the use of gesture in a communicative interaction can both presuppose the presence of a polluted d/Deaf body and creatively index the transmission of that pollution to a hearing interlocutor. By the same token, gesturally engaging with Deaf persons can index “modern” rejection of belief in ritual pollution on the part of the hearing participant. While many scholarly typologies of gesture focus on form and decontextualized reference, the pragmatic effects of gesture derived from and contributing to differently positioned personhoods are more significant in local ideologies in Nepal.

Abstract:
The paper Structure and Complexity of Bag Consistency by Albert Atserias and Phokion Kolaitis [1] studies fundamental structural and algorithmic questions on the global consistency of databases in the context of bag semantics. A collection D of relations is called globally consistent if there is a (so-called "universal") relation over all the attributes that appear in all the relations of D whose projections yield the relations in D. The basic algorithmic problem for consistency is: given a database D, determine whether D is globally consistent. An obvious necessary condition for global consistency is local (or pairwise) consistency: every pair of relations in D must be consistent. This condition is not sufficient however: It is possible that every pair is consistent, but there is no single global relation over all the attributes whose projections yield the relations in D. A natural structural question is: Which database schemas have the property that every locally consistent database over the schema is also globally consistent?

Abstract:
This article was inspired by the question: is there a definable equivalence relation on the field of complex numbers, each of whose equivalence classes has exactly two elements? The answer turned out to be no, as we now explain in greater detail.Let Κ be an algebraically closed field and let E be a definable equivalence relation on Κ. [Note: By “definable” we will always mean “definable with parameters”.] Either E has one cofinite class, or all classes are finite and there is a number d such that all but a finite set of classes have cardinality d. In the latter case let B be the finite set of elements of Κ which are not in a class of size d. We prove the following result.Theorem 1. a) If char(Κ) = 0 or char(Κ) = p > d, then ∣B∣ ≡ 1 (mod d).b) If char(Κ) = 2 and d = 2, then ∣B∣ ≡ 0 (mod 2).c) If char(Κ) = p > 2 and d = p + s, where 1 ≤ s ≤ p/2, then ∣B∣ ≡ p + 1 (mod d).Furthermore, a)−c) are the only restrictions on ≡B≡.If one is in the right mood, one can view this theorem as saying that the “algebraic cardinality” of the complex numbers is congruent to 1 (mod n) for every n.§1 contains a reduction of the problem to the special case where E is induced by a rational function in one variable. §2 contains the main calculations and the proofs of a)−c). §3 contains eight families of examples showing that all else is possible. In §4 we prove an analogous result for real closed fields.

AbstractLet π be a square integrable representation of G′ = SLn(D), with D a central division algebra of finite dimension over a local field F of non-zero characteristic. We prove that, on the elliptic set, the character of π equals the complex conjugate of the orbital integral of one of the pseudocoefficients of π. We prove also the orthogonality relations for characters of square integrable representations of G′. We prove the stable transfer of orbital integrals between SLn(F) and its inner forms.

Abstract:
Examination of salaried workers' collective rights in the case of corporate restructuring requires both good knowledge of salaried workers' rights with regard to restructuring, and the effects of restructuring on workers' rights. Salaried workers have limited powers over corporate restructuring : staff representatives are merely informed and consulted as to the operations envisaged. Conversely, corporate restructuring can affect salaried workers' rights considerably : staff representation rights, financial rights and rights relating to labour agreements may hence be seriously undermined, rights originating from employers' standard practises and unilateral commitments. Only established rights in terms of pension schemes, contingency funds and workers representatives' patrimonial rights are able to resist restructuring

Malik, Hamdi. "Media, gender and domestic relations in post-Saddam Iraq." Thesis, Keele University, 2018. http://eprints.keele.ac.uk/5102/.

Full text
Abstract:
The regime change of 2003 transformed the media environment in Iraq from one that was strictly limited and monopolised by the state, to one without any restrictions imposed by state agencies. Gender culture and ‘family values’ have especially been contested as a consequence of the transformation of access to the media. The common assumption is that sexualised media content, and also the increasingly privatised nature of media technologies, are contributing towards the transformation of gender culture, with worries that Iraqi women in particular are turning into Western women and becoming estranged from their genuine Iraqi identity. The aim of this research is to investigate the nature of the evolving relationship between media and gender culture in post-Saddam Iraq. The importance of this investigation lies in the fact that since 2003, most research on Iraq has focused on war. This is also true of studies on gender relations. This research, however, focuses on other developments that happened as a result of the regime change, paving the way for struggles over many issues, including gender culture and Iraqi identity. The project was carried out using the qualitative method of semi-structured interviews. The interviews were carried out in Baghdad and Erbil, giving a perspective of the urban middle class Iraqi Arabs and Kurds on the subject. The research demonstrates that although the media provides windows for Iraqi women to distance themselves from prevalent patriarchal rules that control their sexuality, the ‘realities’ of local life have not allowed for the ‘Westernisation’ of gender relations in post-Saddam Iraq. Since the media is viewed as a threat to the sexual honour, an important element of Iraqi gender culture, there is a tendency to reassert this notion in the processes of the redefinition of the cultural identity of Iraqi people that was triggered by the 2003 war. This thesis offers new insights into gender relations in post-Saddam Iraq, focussing especially on the update on media in this period, and how this relates to the constitution of Iraqi identity and gender relations in families. It also offers a re-working of the concept of ‘honour’; one that embeds this into an analysis of Iraq’s hegemonic masculine system.

Abstract:
The first part consists in studying the origine of the terms "lixuan, daqin, fulin" and the relation between them. The second part analyses and introduces the exchange of ambassadors. The third part discusses the commercial relationship between ancient china and rome, and introduces the reciprocal exportation and importation. The fourth part describes the exange between the two countries on sciences and culture

Abstract:
Historians of American diplomatic history during the Roosevelt administration have long debated whether President Roosevelt tricked Americans into the Second World War. Historians have looked at the personalities of Roosevelt and his key advisors to see if a hidden agenda was followed. U.S.-French relations highlight this divide. Did Roosevelt conspire in the fall of France, as the conspiratorialists claim, or did he simply react? With most historians focusing on Roosevelt himself, few have examined the systemic causes of America's failure to aid France. This study investigates how Roosevelt's style of governance and administration affected American foreign policy toward France. It concludes that the system of foreign-policy-making Roosevelt established made the outcome of American policy toward France-in particular the fall of France in 1940-nearly inevitable.

Abstract:
AbstractChina and Russia are both keen to exploit cutting-edge technologies for military use. Most of these advanced technologies are embedded in the so-called fourth industrial revolution (4IR), such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, automation and robotics, quantum computing, big data, 5G networking, and the “Internet of Things” (IoT). At the same time, most research and development (R & D) taking place in the 4IR is occurring in the commercial realm. The usefulness of 4IR technologies to future military capabilities will depend on how well countries can leverage breakthroughs in commercial R & D, via military-civil fusion (MCF). China and Russia are pursuing concurrent and often intertwined R & D programs to develop and advance 4IR technologies in their respective countries—particularly AI—and to subsequently utilize these technologies (via MCF) in military applications. Their mutual interests in exploiting cutting-edge technologies to underwrite military modernization could motivate Beijing and Moscow to collaborate on future 4IR R & D. Nevertheless, such cooperation could be limited. In particular, Russia lacks the resources or overall technological capacities (money and manpower, plus an already low level of innovation in the national economy) to function as an equal to China, and it may not wish to play the junior partner in such a relationship.

Abstract:
All plane curves can be described at an abstract level by a sequence of five primitive elemental shapes, called codons, which simply capture the relations between the extrema of curvature. The codon description provides a basis for enumerating all smooth 2-D curves. Let each of these smooth plane curves be considered as the silhouette of an opaque 3-D object. Clearly an infinity of 3-D objects can generate any one of our codon silhouettes. How then can we predict which 3-D object corresponds to a given 2-D silhouette? To restrict the infinity of choices, we impose two mathematical properties of smooth surfaces plus one simple viewing constraint. The constraint is an extension of the notion of general position and seems to drive our preferred inferences of 3-D shapes, given only the 2-D contour.

Cohen, Shabtai, Melvin Tyree, Amos Naor, Alan N. Lakso, Terence L. Robinson, and Yehezkiel Cohen. Influence of hydraulic properties of rootstocks and the rootstock-scion graft on water use and productivity of apple trees. United States Department of Agriculture, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2001.7587219.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
This one year exploratory project investigated hydraulic architecture of apple dwarfing rootstocks. The hypothesis was that hydraulic conductance is correlated with rootstock vigor. A previous study of trees on three rootstocks in Israel showed that dwarfed trees used less water than un-dwarfed trees. Analysis showed that if the tree maintains leaf water potentials above minimum values, then this implies that the dwarfed trees have lower leaf conductance, which may also be the cause of dwarfing. The current project studied small 2-year old unworked rootstock trees, and full sized trees bearing commercial yields. In both cases hydraulic conductance was determined with two methods - the non-destructive evaporative flux (EF)-leaf water potential (L WP) method, and a destructive method in which water was forced through the plant at known pressure using the "high pressure flow meter" (HPFM). Detailed work allowed measurement of conductance of the rootstock-scion union. This was achieved both with the HPFM and with the EF-LWP methods, the former in the US and the latter in Israel. Direct measurements of leaf conductance were made, and carbon isotope ratios ( d ¹³ C) were determined for leaves sampled at the end of the season. The latter can indicate sustained differences in leaf conductance behavior. HPFM and EF-LWP methods did not give the same results. In the small plants results were similar in magnitude, but not significantly correlated. In large trees, EF- L WP measurements were a fraction of those obtained with the HPFM. The latter indicates that some of the xylem is not normally functional but transports water when pressurized. Additional experimental work targeted this result. Xylem was stained before and after perfusion with water at high pressure. This showed that at least for one rootstock a significant amount of xylem was blocked before perfusion. The "air method" for determining xylem vessel properties was improved and employed. Length, radius and density of xylem vessels of different rootstocks were found to be similar, and significant differences found were not clearly related to rootstock vigor. Measurements in the commercial orchard in Israel showed that the graft union in a dwarfing rootstock was a large obstacle for water transport (i.e. had a high resistance). This apparently led to low leaf conductance to water vapor, as indicated by lower d ¹³ C, which implies low internal CO ₂ concentrations. In the US orchard, d ¹³ C in 2001 was correlated with rootstock vigor, and significant differences were found in leaf conductance. However, the d ¹³ C differences were not observed in 2002, were opposite to those found in the Israeli orchard, and measurements of the graft union with the HPFM did not find large resistances. We speculate that the graft union is not necessarily a large impediment to water transport unless the scion starts to separate from the rootstock. It was concluded that significant differences in hydraulic conductance exist between different dwarfing rootstocks. These differences may be caused by differences in xylem properties and in the degree of cavitation, as well as resistance in the graft union. However, no general relationship to rootstock vigor was found. Therefore, hydraulic conductance alone cannot explain dwarfing, but may be one of two or more factors that lead to dwarfing. Future work should integrate more factors with hydraulic relations, e.g. nutrient and solute transport and production of hormones.

Abstract:
Thus far in reporting the findings of our project “Fifty Years After: Black Employment in the United States Under the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission,” our analysis of what has happened to African American employment over the past half century has documented the importance of manufacturing employment to the upward socioeconomic mobility of Blacks in the 1960s and 1970s and the devastating impact of rationalization—the permanent elimination of blue-collar employment—on their socioeconomic mobility in the 1980s and beyond. The upward mobility of Blacks in the earlier decades was based on the Old Economy business model (OEBM) with its characteristic “career-with-one-company” (CWOC) employment relations. At its launching in 1965, the policy approach of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission assumed the existence of CWOC, providing corporate employees, Blacks included, with a potential path for upward socioeconomic mobility over the course of their working lives by gaining access to productive opportunities and higher pay through stable employment within companies. It was through these internal employment structures that Blacks could potentially overcome barriers to the long legacy of job and pay discrimination. In the 1960s and 1970s, the generally growing availability of unionized semiskilled jobs gave working people, including Blacks, the large measure of employment stability as well as rising wages and benefits characteristic of the lower levels of the middle class. The next stage in this process of upward socioeconomic mobility should have been—and in a nation as prosperous as the United States could have been—the entry of the offspring of the new Black blue-collar middle class into white-collar occupations requiring higher educations. Despite progress in the attainment of college degrees, however, Blacks have had very limited access to the best employment opportunities as professional, technical, and administrative personnel at U.S. technology companies. Since the 1980s, the barriers to African American upward socioeconomic mobility have occurred within the context of the marketization (the end of CWOC) and globalization (accessibility to transnational labor supplies) of high-tech employment relations in the United States. These new employment relations, which stress interfirm labor mobility instead of intrafirm employment structures in the building of careers, are characteristic of the rise of the New Economy business model (NEBM), as scrutinized in William Lazonick’s 2009 book, Sustainable Prosperity in the New Economy? Business Organization and High-Tech Employment in the United States (Upjohn Institute). In this paper, we analyze the exclusion of Blacks from STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) occupations, using EEO-1 employment data made public, voluntarily and exceptionally, for various years between 2014 and 2020 by major tech companies, including Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Apple, Cisco, Facebook (now Meta), Hewlett Packard Enterprise, HP Inc., Intel, Microsoft, PayPal, Salesforce, and Uber. These data document the vast over-representation of Asian Americans and vast under-representation of African Americans at these tech companies in recent years. The data also shine a light on the racial, ethnic, and gender composition of large masses of lower-paid labor in the United States at leading U.S. tech companies, including tens of thousands of sales workers at Apple and hundreds of thousands of laborers & helpers at Amazon. In the cases of Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Intel, we have access to EEO-1 data from earlier decades that permit in-depth accounts of the employment transitions that characterized the demise of OEBM and the rise of NEBM. Given our findings from the EEO-1 data analysis, our paper then seeks to explain the enormous presence of Asian Americans and the glaring absence of African Americans in well-paid employment under NEBM. A cogent answer to this question requires an understanding of the institutional conditions that have determined the availability of qualified Asians and Blacks to fill these employment opportunities as well as the access of qualified people by race, ethnicity, and gender to the employment opportunities that are available. Our analysis of the racial/ethnic determinants of STEM employment focuses on a) stark differences among racial and ethnic groups in educational attainment and performance relevant to accessing STEM occupations, b) the decline in the implementation of affirmative-action legislation from the early 1980s, c) changes in U.S. immigration policy that favored the entry of well-educated Asians, especially with the passage of the Immigration Act of 1990, and d) consequent social barriers that qualified Blacks have faced relative to Asians and whites in accessing tech employment as a result of a combination of statistical discrimination against African Americans and their exclusion from effective social networks.

Abstract:
Preliminary surficial geology studies, based on air photo interpretation and limited legacy field data in the Tammarvi River map area, provide an understanding of the nature of surficial materials and regional glacial history. The glaciated landscape records evidence of old southwestward ice flow, preserved in the extreme southwest, followed by younger dominant northwestward flow across the rest of the region, relating to the Dubawnt Lake Ice Stream. Northwest trending streamlined till and associated fluted landforms record the last flow event, but subsequent ice stagnation resulted in the widespread deposition of hummocky till and rare major moraine ridges in the north, accompanied by formation of ridged till and subglacial meltwater activity. The end of deglaciation is defined by the formation and demise of glacial Lake Thelon, whose extent in the southern and east-central map regions can be inferred from the elevation of deltas (230 to 160 m) and beaches (230 to 130 m).

Grand-Clément, Sarah. Assessing Technologies to Counter the Diversion of Small Arms and Light Weapons. UNIDIR, June 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.37559/caap/24/erc/09.

Full text
Abstract:
Countering the Diversion of arms using TEChnology Tools (D-TECT) is a joint project by the Flemish Peace Institute (FPI) and the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR). The aim of Project D-TECT is to develop and test an approach to identifying and assessing the utility and feasibility of using specific technologies that could be used to support or strengthen existing initiatives aimed at detecting, preventing, and mitigating the diversion of conventional weapons. Project D-TECT consists of two consecutive phases. The first phase was to identify existing technologies that could be suited to countering the diversion of conventional weapon systems and develop a framework that makes it possible to identify and assess technologies used to counter diversion. The second phase is to assess, refine and validate the list of identified technologies in relation to specific types of conventional weapon systems. This current paper is a product of the second phase of the research. It focuses on examining the extent to which different technologies could help counter the diversion of small arms and light weapons and the barriers to their implementation. Based on a series of stakeholder engagements, this paper examines the relevance and applicability of 14 technologies to support or strengthen efforts to counter the diversion of small arms and light weapons (SALW). All 14 technologies were assessed by the stakeholders who took part in the research to have potential relevance in helping to counter SALW diversion. However, the relevance of the technologies did differ depending on the life cycle stage (i.e., pre-export, transfer or post-delivery) and whether they were most suitable to helping with prevention, detection or identification. The findings also show that the adoption of technology will also necessitate overcoming a number of systemic barriers. As a result, the paper provides a non-exhaustive overview of possible options which could be undertaken to overcome or mitigate these barriers.

Abstract:

Smith, Margaret, Nurit Katzir, Susan McCouch, and Yaakov Tadmor. Discovery and Transfer of Genes from Wild Zea Germplasm to Improve Grain Oil and Protein Composition of Temperate Maize. United States Department of Agriculture, 1998. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/1998.7580683.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Project Objectives 1. Develop and amplify two interspecific populations (annual and perennial teosintes x elite maize inbred) as the basis for genetic analysis of grain quality. 2. Identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) from teosinte that improve oil, protein, and essential amino acid composition of maize grain. 3. Develop near isogenic lines (NILs) to quantify QTL contributions to grain quality and as a resource for future breeding and gene cloning efforts. 4. Analyze the contribution of these QTLs to hybrid performance in both the US and Israel. 5. Measure the yield potential of improved grain quality hybrids. (NOTE: Yield potential could not be evaluated due to environmentally-caused failure of the breeding nursery where seed was produced for this evaluation.) Background: Maize is a significant agricultural commodity worldwide. As an open pollinated crop, variation within the species is large and, in most cases, sufficient to supply the demand for modem varieties and for new environments. In recent years there is a growing demand for maize varieties with special quality attributes. While domesticated sources of genetic variation for high oil and protein content are limited, useful alleles for these traits may remain in maize's wild relative, teosinte. We utilized advanced backcross (AB) analysis to search for QTLs contributing to oil and protein content from two teosinte accessions: Zea mays ssp. mexicana Race Chalco, an annual teosinte (referred to as Chalco), and Z diploperennis Race San Miguel, a perennial teosinte (referred to as Diplo). Major Conclusions and Achievements Two NILs targeting a Diplo introgression in bin 1.04 showed a significant increase in oil content in homozygous sib-pollinated seed when compared to sibbed seed of their counterpart non-introgressed controls. These BC4S2 NILs, referred to as D-RD29 and D-RD30, carry the Diplo allele in bin 1.04 and the introgression extends partially into bins 1.03 and 1.05. These NILs remain heterozygous in bins 4.01 and 8.02, but otherwise are homozygous for the recurrent parent (RD6502) alleles. NILs were developed also for the Chalco introgression in bin 1.04 but these do not show any improvement in oil content, suggesting that the Chalco alleles differ from the Diplo alleles in this region. Testcross Fl seed and sibbed grain from these Fl plants did not show any effect on oil content from this introgression, suggesting that it would need to be present in both parents of a maize hybrid to have an effect on oil content. Implications, both Scientific and Agricultural The Diplo region identified increases oil content by 12.5% (from 4.8% to 5.4% oil in the seed). Although this absolute difference is not large in agronomic terms, this locus could provide additive increases to oil content in combination with other maize-derived loci for high oil. To our knowledge, this is the first confirmed report of a QTL from teosinte for improved grain oil content in maize. It suggests that further research on grain quality alleles from maize wild relatives would be of both scientific and agricultural interest.
