Abstract:
The primary objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of subclinical gastroduodenal ulceration (GDU) in a population of Dachshunds undergoing decompressive surgery for acute intervertebral disc prolapse (IVDP). Secondary objectives included determining the extent to which treatment with ulcerogenic drugs, prior to admission, and the severity of spinal injury, would influence the prevalence of GDU. It aimed to further establish patient risk profile components (for example: age, weight, sex or concurrent disease conditions) that might influence the prevalence of GDU and make sugges

The purpose of this study was to determine whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) accurately predicts surgical findings in dachshund dogs with thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusions (TLDE). Sixteen dogs presenting with signs of acute TLDE took part in this investigation. MRI was performed on each dog. This was followed by decompressive surgery with the completion of an intra-operative questionnaire documenting the site of the extrusion and spatial distribution of the disc material for each dog. An independent veterinary radiologist evaluated each MRI study, measured and recorded the sa

The primary objectives of this study were to estimate normal values for the left atrium to aorta (LA/Ao) ratio and establish normal prediction intervals for left ventricular motion-mode (M-mode) transthoracic echocardiographic measurements in clinically normal adult Dachshunds. Abstract:
The dachshund, a chondrodystrophic dog breed, presents a unique challenge in the treatment of tibial fractures by having short and curvaceous tibiae, leading to high implant failure risk. In this study, intramedullary pins with full cerclage wires as an option in the treatment of oblique diaphyseal tibial fractures was studied in vitro. This fixation technique was biomechanically compared with the current gold standard in internal stabilization, namely bone plates and screws. Changes in the morphological character of appendages are essential to arthropod diversification and adaptation to a variety of living conditions. For instance, the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster possesses cylindrical, uniramous (unbranched) walking legs that are well suited for terrestrial life, while Triops longicaudatus possesses paddle-like, multiramous (multibranched) limbs adapted to aquatic life. Comparative studies of limb patterning between different species of arthropods suggest that most animals utilize a conserved set of genes to construct a limb. How is this common set of gen

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is a major health problem in Dachshunds. Of all the dog breeds they have the highest incidence of IVDD, owing to their chrondrodystrophy and subsequent accelerated intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. Degenerated IVDs are predisposed to herniation, resulting in spinal cord injury and commonly paralysis. Late-stage IVD degeneration can include dystrophic calcification, and this calcification may be detected on spinal radiographs (radiographically detectable intervertebral disc calcification [RDIDC]).
