Abstract:

In both field theories of high energy physics and field theories of condensed matter theories anomalies have been imposing constraints and bringing up new theories. While the perturbational and local anomalies from triangle diagrams are well-developed, we follow and review two works leading to non-perturbational global anomalies both related with Atiyah-Patogi-Sieger (APS) index theorem. In the context of topological fieldtheories the APS index theorem imposes an η-invariant which adds a global anomalous e−iπη/2 to the path integral from each fermions on the boundary. In the case of Pin+ (4) this will require a multiple of 16 Majorana fermions for the global anomaly to cancel. On the other hand with Dai-Freed theorem, global ’t Hooft anomalies concerned to G symmetry group on 4-dimensional spin manifold which is also classifying space BG are studied. The existence of anomalies are related to the triviality of spin bordismgroup Ω Spin5(BG), where examples with SU(2), GSM and Zn are studied with Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence method and representation of Z n rings. Further there are extensions of spin groups from Pin, SpinZ4 and Spinc , where the anomaly cancellationconstraint of 16 fermions per generation from Spin Z 4 (4) is related to that of Pin + (4) in topological superconductor. A possible candidate of Z4 charge named B − L charge or X charge from several commutative breaking patterns of Spin(10) GUT is briefly discussed with Pati-Salam model and R ⊗ C ⊗ H ⊗ O.

Abstract:

Dans la récente théorie des grounds, Prawitz développe ses investigations sémantiques dans la direction d’une analyse de l’origine et de la nature du pouvoir que les inférences valides exercent sur des agents engagés dans l’activité déductive ; à savoir, le pouvoir d’obliger épistémiquement à accepter les conclusions, si l’on en a accepté les prémisses. Un ground est ce dont on est en possession lorsqu’on est justifié à affirmer un certain énoncé. Les grounds peuvent être construits en accomplissant des opérations qui permettent le passage d’un état de justification à un autre. Un acte d’inférence consiste à l’application d’une opération sur les grounds. La théorie des grounds présente des avancements indubitables par rapport à la précédente approche de Prawitz, la proof-theoretic semantics. En particulier, la théorie des grounds offre une définition du concept d’inférence valide en vertu de laquelle il devient possible de faire dépendre la contrainte épistémique des démonstrations de celle des inférences valides dont ces démonstrations se composent. Mais théorie des grounds et proof-theoretic semantics partagent un problème ; dans l’une comme dans l’autre, inférences valides et démonstrations pourraient être telles qu’il est impossible, pour des agents qui les utilisent, de reconnaître le fait qu’elles justifient leur conclusion. Nous allons développer le cadre formel de la proposition de Prawitz en introduisant un « univers » de grounds et opérations sur grounds, ainsi que des langages et des systèmes formels de grounding. Ensuite, nous nous occupons de deux questions : celle de la complétude de la logique intuitionniste, et celle de la reconnaissabilité In his recent theory of grounds, Prawitz develops his semantic investigations towards an analysis of the epistemic power which valid inferences are endowed with to compel one to accept the conclusion, provided one is justified in holding the premises true. A ground is what one is in possession of when one is justified in asserting a sentence. Grounds are built by performing operations that allow to pass from an evidence state to another evidence state. An inferential act consists of an application of an operation on grounds. The theory of grounds allows for undoubted advancements with respect to Prawitz's previous proof-theoretic semantics. In particular, it provides a definition of the notion of valid inference which makes the epistemic power of proofs depend on the epistemic power of the valid inferences of which proofs are built up. But the two semantics also share a problem; in both of them, valid inferences and proofs might be such that it is impossible, for agents who perform them, to recognize that they justify their conclusions. We develop the formal framework of Prawitz's proposal, by introducing a "universe" of grounds and operations on grounds, as well as some formal languages and systems of grounds. Then, we focus on two issues: the completeness of intuitionistic logic, and the aforementioned recognizability problem

Abstract:

Nach einem ersten Fachtag im Jahr 2016, auf dem ehrenamtliche Deutschvermittlungspraxen sichtbar gemacht und Theorie und Praxis in einen Dialog gebracht wurden, ging der Austausch um die den Spracherwerb und die Vermittlung der Sprache von Anfang an betreffenden Herausforderungen in eine neue Phase. Hierbei galt, miteinander zu sprechen, einander zuzuhören statt übereinander zu urteilen. In gemeinsamer Trägerschaft mit dem Netzwerk Dresden für Alle (DfA), mit Unterstützung des Fachverbandes Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache (fadaf e.V.) und in Zusammenarbeit mit weiteren Kooperationspartnern fand im Herbst 2017, initiiert, organisiert und dokumentiert vom Zentrum für Integrationsstudien der TU Dresden (ZfI), der zweite Fachtag statt. Abstract:

This descriptive essay aims to develop constructivist Role theory. Specifically, it examines the potential of applying role analysis to a case of two types of actors; marginalized citizens and their state decision makers. There has previously been little role analysis applied to domestic political settings, as opposed to internationally between states. Therefore, research has been encouraged in this area. The selected empirical case is the controversial Bakun hydroelectric dam project in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. It involves the resettlement of the marginalized indigenous Orang Ulu people and is driven by the Sarawak state government. By analyzing the role conceptions and norms of these actors, together with the concept of power, a new perspective on their relationship is developed. The successful application of Role theory in this new setting and case is a contributing point of the study. The role analysis is conducted using a qualitative critical text analysis method; an analytical framework is established with which the actors’ roles are retrieved from the text material. The results are then analyzed, and the conclusion of the case study is that the actors have incoherent conceptions of their roles and norms, leading to a conflict between the two in which the government has the upper hand due to (illegitimate) power structures.

Abstract:

This dissertation uses a case study of the recently proposed dam on the Mary River at Traveston Crossing in South-East Queensland to consider how individuals can become empowered to effect change in the environmental decision-making processes of the state through citizen action in the public sphere. The theoretical framework chosen to guide the analysis is an adaptation of Judith Butler’s theory of performativity (1997) that I refer to as political performativity. I also draw on social movement theory and media theory to examine how the processes of performativity help explain the practices involved in the public sphere actions taken to stop the Queensland Government’s proposed dam. The case study demonstrates that the initial speech acts of the state government’s announcement, and the way in which these were carried out, impacted on the life worlds of people involved. The protesters’ actions were not only symbolic of their struggle but also part of the creation of an alternative life world vastly different to that imposed upon them through the various speech acts of the Queensland Government. Lessons for the future include the development of more conscious strategies for activists in public sphere actions. Potential research resulting from this study includes a closer examination of the relationship between speech acts, emotions and public sphere action. The usefulness of political performativity in understanding emotions, public sphere action and power may better be served through participatory research methodologies. Abstract:

Adult day care centres provide a means whereby frail or disabled older people can remain living at home particularly when their family care-givers engage in waged work. In Taiwan, adult day care services appear to meet the cultural needs of both older people and their families for whom filial care is vital. Little research attention has been paid to the use of day care services in Taiwan, the uptake rate of which is low. This grounded theory study explored the ways in which older people and family care-givers construct meanings around the use of day care services in Taiwan. Forty-four semi-structured interviews were undertaken with older people, care-givers and day care centre managers. The findings from grounded theory data analysis bring focus to the assumptions and structures that underpin the process of transition to day care services. A key feature of this process is the reconstruction of personal identity as both the older people and family care-givers work to make sense of the relationship between the self and a changing social structure. Reconstructing identity in a shifting world is the core category of the study and reflects a process of reframing whereby older people came to new definitions of social responsibility and independence within the context of the day care centre. Similarly, the family care-givers actively reformulated the concept of filial piety as they interacted with and interpreted the changes in economic and social conditions in Taiwan.

Abstract:

Question:"Does the market possess perfect information as the efficient market hypothesis says?""Is there any significant relationship between the abnormal stock return on the ex – day and the dividend?" Purpose: The purpose of this study is to enlighten and find understanding about stock return versus dividend on the ex – day and try to figure out if abnormal returns occur on the portfolio during dividends.Methodology:The study was based in a quantitative nature and was derived with an event study and a hypothesis testing. The authors investigated the thirty most traded shares on the Stockholm stock exchange during a period of five years (2005 – 2009). They were analyzed during a total of nine days; the estimation window was set to sixty days. Theory: Leading theories in this field of study have been picked to enlighten and analysis the questions of the study. Theories used: Efficient market hypothesis, agent theory and the events of dividends.Empiricism / Results:The authors made an event study and hypothesis tested the information. From the data they could see a small abnormal return on every day except the day after the ex – day. However, they could not prove a significant relationship between the stocks return and the dividend.Conclusion / Discussion:The efficient market hypothesis was strengthened in the conclusion where all new information is reflected in the stock price because the null hypothesis was accepted in all nine cases. The authors also concluded that although they have a differentiated result compared to other studies, it could be a result of the recession. Another conclusion was that the relationship between shareholders and the management has been improved because of a better spread of information.

Neste trabalho estudamos um pouco de Teoria dos Grafos, abordando diversas definições e teoremas interessantes. Apresentamos o Teorema das Quatro Cores, desde o surgimento do problema com Francis Guthrie. Analisamos a demonstração do teorema realizada por Alfred Bray Kempe e sua refutação através do contraexemplo de Percy John Heawood. Analisamos também a demonstração do Teorema das Cinco Cores de Percy John Heawood. Porém, apresentamos a primeira demonstração válida do Teorema das Quatro Cores, como sua particularidade de ter sido feita com o auxílio de um computador. O trabalho é concluído com uma análise sobre os benefícios que o conhecimento de Teoria dos Grafos pode render aos alunos do Ensino Básico, e como professor o pode trabalhar este assunto em sala de aula, inclusive abordando o problema de coloração de mapas. In this paper we study Graph Theory, addressing various definitions and interesting theorems. We present the Four Color Theorem, since the origin of the problem with Francis Guthrie. We analyze the proof of the theorem presented by Alfred Bray Kempe, and its refutation by Percy John Heawood counter-example. We also analyze the Percy John Heawood demonstration of the Five Color Theorem. Finally, we present the first valid proof of the Four Colors Theorem, with its peculiarity of having been done with the aid of a computer. We conclude with an analysis of the beneficial that the knowledge of Graph Theory can render students of Basic Education, and how a teacher can work this topic in the classroom, including addressing the problem of map coloring.

Abstract:

From its infancy, environmental psychology [which concerns itself with the coinfluencing interface between people and places] has required attention to actual context, and attention to social relevance. There has always been an emphasis on research into real problems within a context of meaningful theory, and on results which have potential not only for individuals, but also for policy-makers and those who execute that policy. This environmental psychology study is about the potential role of green open space in contributing towards quality of life in the city generally. It is also about a specific, wellloved urban open space in Namibia's capital city, Windhoek, the Avis dam environment, which is often the contentious target of proposed commercial development. At the moment, the Windhoek Municipality has no well-structured urban open space policy, and possibly also no full understanding of the meanings of the Avis dam for its users. This study hopes to make contributions to both these areas of policy-making. As the applicability of research findings to the development of public policies and community interventions depends very much on the suitability of the methodology and theories chosen (Stokols, 19911), this study begins with a discussion of systemic and ecosystemic thinking [Chapter Two]. They were chosen as the guiding metatheory for this study, not only because of their recognition of the inescapable connectedness between person and environment, but because of their personal appeal too. Chapter Three examines theories and models which are compatible with systems thinking, and which help understand the potentially positive psycho-social and socio-economic roles of urban open space generally, and how the extent of that potential in a specific open space may be appreciated and described. The implications of systemic/ecosystemic metatheory for the study's methodology and research design are discussed in Chapter Four, and the data collection methods, which comprised observation and interviewing, in Chapter Five. Ecosystemic thinkers do not believe that facts can be "found" [they are not there objectively, but co-emerge subjectively from people's individual and collective experience in a place], so Chapter Six deals with a co-emergent interpretation of the data gathered. Based on that interpretation, recommendations for urban open space policy generally, and the Avis dam environment specifically, are made in Chapter Seven. Die toepaslikheid van navorsingsbevindings in die ontwikkeling van openbare beleid en gemeenskapsbemiddeling hang baie van die gepastheid van die metodologie en teorië (Stokols, 1991)2 af. Hierdie studie begin met ‘n bespreking oor sistemiese en ekosistemiese denke (Hoofstuk Twee). Hulle is as die leidende metateorieë gekies, nie alleen vir hul erkenning van die onontkombare verband tussen persone en hul omgewing nie, maar ook vir hulle persoonlike aantrekkingskrag. Abstract:

In this dissertation project, I examine the ways in which a grassroots environmental organization, the Upper French Broad Defense Association (UFBDA), was able to contribute knowledge and voice concerns regarding a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) proposal between 1961 and 1972. The TVA proposal included a plan for comprehensive water resource development in western North Carolina which would have required in the implementation of 14 dams, flooding of more than 18,000 fertile agricultural acres and displacing 600 families from their ancestral homes. Employing archival research methods, in this dissertation I analyze the UFBDA's everyday rhetorical tactics which contributed to their overall success in preventing the implementation of the TVA project. I situate archival sources alongside contemporary scholarship in democratic practice, environmental rhetoric, rhetorical citizenship, and ethos, as discussed in rhetoric and writing studies. Overall, this dissertation demonstrates the ways in which the UFBDA case study offers a generative model for future environmental controversies, providing specific techniques which can contribute to the success of grassroots organizations mired in environmental controversies and contentious decisions. The TVA proposal included a plan for comprehensive water resource development in western North Carolina which would have required in the implementation of 14 dams, flooding of more than 18,000 fertile agricultural acres and displacing 600 families from their ancestral homes. In order to complete this dissertation project, I explored two archival collections pertaining to the UFBDA. Based on my findings in the archives, I provide new understandings of how grassroots environmentalism works, particularly in terms of how environmentalists use language in order to participate in decisions about the environment. More specifically, this dissertation documents how members of the UFBDA were able to describe the western North Carolina landscape as a commons and not a wilderness, work together across counties to create new opportunities to share their concerns over the TVA project, and establish their own credibility as knowledgeable citizens about their local environment. By highlighting specific components of the UFBDA's work, this dissertation provides examples that can be used by future grassroots environmental organization facing similar challenges regarding environmental controversies.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to extend research findings on perceived equity into the context of the contingent workforce by examining employees' perceived fairness of a child-care subsidy (i.e., distributive justice perception) in a temporary employment agency. The variables of interest to the study were perceived fairness, comparison other, input importance, organizational responsibility and family-friendliness. The variables were examined on three levels of subsidy status (i.e., subsidy group, parents/no-subsidy group, and nonparents group). A cover letter and a questionnaire regarding perceived fairness of the child-care subsidy were mailed to all employees who had worked for the temporary agency in the last three years. In addition, a stamped self addressed envelope was attached, so respondents could mail the questionnaire directly to the researcher within 2 weeks. Respondents were instructed to anonymously answer the entire questionnaire, and to indicate the degree of their agreement or disagreement with respect to each of the statements in the questionnaire. Findings are based on 64 survey responses, which represented a return rate of 9.5%. The data were analyzed using separate analyses of variance and regression analyses. Results indicated significant differences among parents with subsidy, parents without subsidy and non-parents on their perceived importance of inputs such as level of education, hours per week and "other'' inputs (i.e., client satisfaction and work environment). Specifically, parents without subsidy perceived the level of education and the number of hours worked per week as more important inputs than did either the non-parents and the parents with subsidy. However, non-parents perceived the level of education and the number of hours worked per week as more important inputs than did the parents with subsidy. Furthermore, non-parents and parents without the subsidy perceived "other'' inputs as more important input than did the parents with subsidy. Significant differences were also found between the subsidy group and no-subsidy group and perceived fairness. Specifically, the subsidy group perceived the child care subsidy as more fair than the no-subsidy group (i.e., parents without subsidy and non-parents). A significant interaction of the effect of family-friendliness on the relationship between subsidy status and perceived fairness was also found.

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to understand how different fractions of Sweden’s left wing (the Social democrats, the Communists, the Syndicalists and the Socialist party) framed the end of the Spanish Civil War and the defeat of the republicans. To answer the purpose four newspapers Arbetaren (syndicalist), Folkets Dagblad (Socialist party), Ny Dag (communist) and Socialdemokraten (social democratic) have been analyzed qualitatively. The thesis has focused on how the different ideologies have framed the war, how they framed the other labour organizations and themselves plus how they relate to information about the war during the period of February 1st1939 till April 5th1939. The analysis shows that the Social democrats and the Communists framed the war as a conflict between fascism and socialism, whereas the Syndicalists and the Socialist party framed the war as a socialistic revolution. Because each side had their own view, their opinions on what threatened a republican victory differed. The Social democrats were most concerned that a non-democratic movement would win the war and the Communists feared that fragmentation within the republicans would threaten their chances to win. In contrast, the Syndicalists argued that the nonintervention policy would make the revolution impossible and the Socialist party framed the threat as the Communists, because of their non-revolutionary agenda.

Abstract:

We first provide a detailed background of a geometric projection methodology developed by Professor Roswitha Marz at Humboldt University in Berlin for showing uniqueness and existence of solutions for ordinary differential-algebraic equations (DAEs). Because of the geometric and operator-theoretic aspects of this particular method, it can be extended to the case of infinite-dimensional abstract DAEs. For example, partial differential equations (PDEs) are often formulated as abstract Cauchy or evolution problems which we label abstract ordinary differential equations or AODE. Using this abstract formulation, existence and uniqueness of the Cauchy problem has been studied. Similarly, we look at an AODE system with operator constraint equations to formulate an abstract differential-algebraic equation or ADAE problem. Existence and uniqueness of solutions is shown under certain conditions on the operators for both index-1 and index-2 abstract DAEs. These existence and uniqueness results are then applied to some index-1 DAEs in the area of thermodynamic modeling of a chemical vapor deposition reactor and to a structural dynamics problem. The application for the structural dynamics problem, in particular, provides a detailed construction of the model and development of the DAE framework. Existence and uniqueness are primarily demonstrated using a semigroup approach. Finally, an exploration of some issues which arise from discretizing the abstract DAE are discussed. Ph. D.

Nesta tese investigamos a integrabilidade quântica do modelo de Alday-Arutyunov-Frolov (AAF) através da diagonalização da Hamiltoniana do modelo transformado de AAF. O modelo transformado de AAF é obtido do modelo original após uma redefinição nos campos que tem o objetivo de transformar os parênteses de Dirac na estrutura canônicos padrão entre dois fêrmions. Para diagonalização da Hamiltoniana do modelo transformado nós usamos um método desenvolvido para o modelo de Landau-Lifshitz. Este método exige regularização do produto de operadores definidos no mesmo ponto bem como a construção de extensões auto-adjuntas. Mostramos que a função de onda e os estados do modelo transformado de AAF apresentam descontinuidades que devem ser tratadas cuidadosamente. Nós também investigamos a equivalência entre as matrizes S das duas formulações do modelo de AAF através do cálculo direto da matriz S em ambas as teorias. Também consideramos o teorema da equivalência para o modelo de AAF, para mostrar que a matriz S é invariante por redefinições dos campos da teoria. In this thesis we investigate the quantum integrability of the Alday-Arutyunov-Frolov model (AAF) by diagonalization of the Hamiltonian of the AAF transformed model. The AAF transformed model is obtained from original model after fields redefinition whose purpose is to transform the Dirac brackets in the standard canonical structure between two fermions. For the diagonalization of the Hamiltonian of the transformed model we use the method developed for the Landau-Lifshitz model. This method requires regularization of the singular product of operators at the same point as well as construction of the selfadjoint extensions. We show that the wave function and the states of the transformed AAF exhibit discontinuities. We also investigated the equivalence of the matrices S of the two formulations of the AAF model through direct calculation of the S-matrix in both theories. We also consider the equivalence theorem applied to AAF model. To shows that the S matrix is invariant under field redefinitions.

Apesar do grande interesse dos investigadores em compreender o processo de adaptação pelo qual passam pais e mães, aquando da chegada de uma criança com Perturbações do Espectro do Autismo (PEA), as investigações têm tido como foco primário as mães, deixando de parte a experiência individual do pai. O objetivo desta dissertação foi perceber como ocorre o processo adaptativo do pai a uma criança com PEA. A metodologia utilizada foi de natureza qualitativa, recorrendo-se à Grounded Theory. Os dados foram recolhidos através de entrevistas a 18 pais de crianças com PEA. Foram identificadas três categorias principais de análise (primeiros sinais, diagnóstico e vivências da parentalidade) que mostram o forte impacto e desafio da chegada de uma criança com PEA. Constatou-se que este é um processo contínuo que tem início no aparecimento dos primeiros sinais de alerta, que se reafirma na fase de diagnóstico e que continua pela vida fora, na expetativa de um futuro promissor e independente para a criança; "Paternal Adaptation to the Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder" Abstract: Despite the great interest on the part of researchers in understanding the adaptation process that fathers /mothers go through, upon the arrival of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), most of researches has focused primarily on mothers, leaving aside the part of the father's individual experience. The objective of this dissertation was to understand how the adaptive process of the father to a child with ASD is. The methodology used was of a qualitative nature, using the Grounded Theory. Data were collected through interviews from 18 parents of children with ASD. Three main categories of analysis were identified (first signs, diagnosis and parenting experiences) who shows the strong impact and challenge of the arrival of a child with ASD. It was found that it is a continuous process that begins with the appearance of the first warning signs, which is reaffirmed in the diagnosis phase and continues throughout life, hoping for a promising and independent future for the child.

Mestrado em Economia Monetária e Financeira O estouro da bolha imobiliária nos EUA que culminou na crise financeira de 2008-09 reacendeu o interesse no estudo das vulnerabilidades que resultam de elevados níveis de alavancagem financeira. Para estudar a relação entre a alavancagem e os preços dos ativos, esta dissertação apresenta um modelo que replica uma economia com dois períodos, dois ativos diferentes, sendo um mais arriscado que o outro, onde dois estados da natureza podem ocorrer. As crenças heterogéneas dos agentes que pertencem a esta economia resultam em diferentes expectativas acerca do retorno esperado do ativo com risco. Esta heterogeneidade dita que apenas os agentes mais otimistas participam do mercado de ativos de risco. Assim, quando o crédito é introduzido nesta economia essa taxa de participação diminui em função do aumento do preço do ativo com risco. Do modelo apresentado retira-se que a taxa de retorno do ativo com risco depende positivamente do índice de alavancagem do agente (ou rácio Financiamento-Garantia). Esta dissertação realiza ainda uma análise de regressão multivariada, através de dados trimestrais do mercado de habitação que constam na base de dados do BCE, e descobre que a taxa de retorno da habitação na área euro reage negativamente ao aumento da alavancagem financeira das famílias observado no trimestre em análise, mas tem uma reação positiva e mais forte ao nível de alavancagem observado no trimestre anterior. Estes resultados sugerem que a taxa de retorno do mercado imobiliário pode demorar a responder a alterações nos requisitos dos financiamentos hipotecários. The housing bubble burst following the emergence of leverage-fuelled property booms observed in the US culminated in the financial crisis of 2008-09 did regain the interest on the vulnerabilities that result from higher levels of leverage. To capture the relation between leverage and its influence on asset bubbles, this paper presents a model to replicate an economy with two periods, two different assets, with one riskier than the other, where two states of nature can occur. The heterogeneous beliefs of agents belonging to this economy result in different assignments on the expected return of the risky asset which in turn dictates that only the more optimistic agents participate in the risky asset market. When agents have access to credit to purchase the risky asset, this participation rate diminishes as a result of the increasing price of the risky asset. One can also derive from this model that the rate of return of the risky asset depends positively on the agent?s leverage ratio (or Loan-to-Value ratio). By using quarterly housing data from the European Central Bank Data Warehouse, this paper does a multivariate regression analysis to find the housing return rate in the Euro area reacts negatively to increasing households? leverage observed in the current quarter, but has a higher positive reaction from the leverage level observed in the previous quarter. We choose the commercial program Microsoft Excel using its tools and internal formulations due to its ease of use, allowing multiple alternatives are analyzed to choose the one that best meets the design requirements. For ease of use, so Excel spreadsheets grouped into modules, thus aiming to develop the activities of data information in a simple, objective and integrated in order to achieve a friendly interface and reliable structural analysis. For the validation of this proposed tool for analytical calculation we used the commercial finite element program ANSYS, by analyzing some examples of gantry cranes

This paper applies New Growth Theory (NGT) to the economic development plan of the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) for the Dan River region. New Growth Theory is summarized into five concepts: knowledge and human capital, technology, flexible production and innovation, and the institutional environment. The IALR program demonstrates this NGT framework. The IALR program seeks to promote growth by attracting exogenous demand for innovation and high tech. Endogenously, the program plans to create an institutional support environment and human capital infrastructure. The New Growth Theory supports the IALR in developing a knowledge based economy. However, the New Growth Theory has limitations in application for economic development. It assumes that the targeted economy has some physical and social infrastructure. The Dan River region lacks transportation infrastructure and a history of valuing higher education. The New Growth Theory assumes that using knowledge as a factor will insure against diminishing returns. However, growth from high tech is risky and uneven. The IALR program is an example of an under-educated region trying to transform its economy by using high tech. What may happen is an increased gap between the lower and higher income population, with skilled knowledge labor being recruited and the existing human capital not able to keep up with the new skill requirements. Finally, while the Dan River region has a need to work on quality of life aspects, such as living conditions, equity, the environment, health and civic infrastructure, New Growth Theory does not consider these aspects. In deregulated electricity markets, profit driven electricity retailers compete to supply cheap reliable electricity to electricity consumers, and the electricity consumers have free will to switch between the electricity retailers. The need to maximize the profits of the electricity retailers while minimizing the electricity costs of the electricity consumers has therefore seen a drastic increase in the research of electricity markets. One of the factors that affect the profits of the electricity retailers and the energy cost of the consumers in electricity retail markets is the supply and demand. During high-supply and low-demand periods, the excess electricity if not managed, is wasted. During low-supply high-demand periods, the deficit supply can lead to electricity blackouts or costly electricity because of the volatile electricity wholesale spot market prices. Research studies have shown that electricity retailers can achieve significant profits and reduced electricity costs for their electricity consumers by minimizing the excess electricity and deficit electricity. Existing studies developed load forecasting models that aimed to match electricity supply and electricity demand. These models reached excellent accuracy levels, however due to the high volatility character of load demand and the rise of new electricity consumers, load forecasting alone is unable to mitigate excess and deficit electricity. In other studies, researchers proposed charging the electricity consumers’ batteries with excess electricity during high-supply low-demand periods and supplying their deficit electricity during low-supply high-demand periods. Electricity consumers’ incorporating batteries resulted in minimized excess and deficit electricity, in turn, maximizing the profits for the electricity retailers and minimizing the electricity costs for the electricity consumers. However, the batteries are consumer centric and only provide battery energy for the battery-owned consumer. Electricity consumers without battery energy during low-supply highdemand periods have electricity blackouts or require costly electricity from the electricity wholesale spot market. The peer-to-peer (P2P) energy sharing framework which allows electricity consumers to share their energy resources with one another is a viable solution to allow electricity consumers to share their battery energy. P2P energy sharing is a hot topic in research because of its potential to maximize the electricity retailers’ profits and minimize the electricity consumers’ electricity costs. Due to the increased profits for the electricity retailer and reduced electricity costs for the electricity consumers from implementing battery charging and P2P energy sharing, this dissertation proposes a day-ahead electricity retail market structure in which the electricity retailer supplies consumers’ batteries with excess electricity during high-supply low-demand periods, and during low-supply highdemand periods the electricity retailer discharges the consumers’ batteries to supply their deficit supply or supply their peers’ deficit supply. The electricity retailer aims to maximize its profits and minimize the electricity cost of the electricity consumers in its electricity retail market, by minimizing the excess and deficit electricity. The problem is formulated as a non-linear optimization model and solved using game theory. This dissertation compares the profits of the electricity retailer and electricity costs of the consumers that charge their batteries with excess electricity, discharge their batteries and purchase electricity from their peers to supply their deficit supply, with consumers that only charge their batteries with excess electricity but do not share their battery energy with their peers, consumers that only purchase electricity from their peers to supply their deficit supply but do not employ a battery, and consumers that neither employ a battery nor purchase electricity from their peers to supply their deficit supply. The results show that the consumers that charge their batteries with excess electricity, discharge their batteries and purchase electricity from their peers to supply their deficit supply achieved the lowest electricity cost and highest profits for the electricity retailer. In questo lavoro abbiamo studiato lo stato fondamentale e gli stati eccitati della molecola di formaldeide, che rappresenta il più semplice fra tutti i composti organici contenenti il gruppo carbonile. In particolare abbiamo analizzato l'accoppiamento fra le eccitazioni vibrazionali e le eccitazioni elettroniche. Lo studio è stato realizzato tramite Teoria del Funzionale-Densità (DFT) e Teoria del Funzionale-Densità Dipendente dal Tempo (TDDFT) nei regimi di Risposta Lineare (LR-TDDFT) e di propagazione in Tempo Reale (RT-TDDFT), nell'ambito dell'approssimazione di densità locale (LDA) per il funzionale di scambio e correlazione e dell'approssimazione di campo medio di Ehrenfest per la dinamica semiclassica in tempo reale del sistema accoppiato elettroni-nuclei. Nella prima parte sono state caratterizzate le superfici potenziali dello stato fondamentale e degli stati elettronici eccitati determinate da moti nucleari relativi all'attivazione di un singolo modo normale, nel contesto della dinamica dei nuclei quasi-statica di Born-Oppenheimer. Le superfici potenziali sono state ottenute per lo stato fondamentale tramite DFT e per gli stati eccitati tramite LR-TDDFT. Nella seconda parte del lavoro, tramite un'opportuna scelta di configurazioni iniziali distorte, sono state eseguite delle simulazioni di dinamica molecolare delle eccitazioni elettroniche-nucleari accoppiate. Queste simulazioni sono state svolte nell'ambito della RT-TDDFT/Ehrenfest. Per queste eccitazioni accoppiate sono state analizzate e caratterizzate le oscillazioni nucleari attivate e le configurazioni geometriche molecolari.

Tais melhorias são obtidas por intermédio da redução dos níveis gerais de estoques e, ao mesmo tempo, pela minimização das oportunidades de vendas perdidas, ocasionadas devido à indisponibilidade de produtos nos pontos de consumo (clientes finais). Os principais conceitos da TOC, tais como, os processos de raciocínio, a programação tambor-pulmão-corda (TPC) e o TPC-simplificado, foram adaptados do ambiente de manufatura para a utilização prática numa cadeia de suprimentos, permitindo a emersão dos principais dilemas que afetam o desempenho do processo de distribuição. A compreensão deste contexto propicia um melhor balanceamento entre os ganhos globais da cadeia e os ganhos pontuais de cada parceiro. Salienta-se, ainda, que o processo de estoque gerenciado pelo fornecedor (vendor-managed inventory - VMI) e os recursos do business-to-business (B2B) são fortalecidos quando utilizados junto aos preceitos da TOC, robustecendo o desempenho do sistema e diminuindo, ainda mais, os níveis de estoques, através da minimização do efeito chicote (bullwhip effect). Uma aplicação prática é apresentada para evidenciar a viabilidade e os benefícios da proposta, em que o ERP CIS (Customer Integrated System) utiliza, em seu módulo logístico, o VMI integrado à TOC e a um B2B na internet. O modelo opera como um sistema de planejamento e programação avançados (advanced planning and scheduling – APS), realizando todo o compartilhamento de informações entre os ERPs, desde os fornecedores até os clientes. This research presents a real application of the theory of constraints (TOC) to the management of a supply chain, in order to demonstrate how this methodology can introduce important improvements in the entire supply system performance. These improvements are gained by decreasing the general inventory levels and, at the same time, reducing losses of sales opportunities due to the lack of goods at sales points (end-customers). The main concepts of TOC, as the thinking process, the drum-bufferrope schedule (DBR) and the simplified-DBR, were adapted from the manufacturing environment to a practical use in a supply chain, providing a better perception of the abstruse dilemmas that constrains the performance of the distribution system. The comprehension of this context enables a better balance between the global gains of the supply chain and each local earnings of each partner. Moreover, the vendor-managed inventory (VMI) and the business-to-business (B2B) are strengthened when related with the TOC conception, making a robust system performance and decreasing, even more, the inventory levels, by minimizing the bullwhip effect. A practical application is presented to evidence the feasibility and the benefits of this proposal, where the CIS ERP (Customer Integrated System) relates its logistic module the integrated VMI to TOC and B2B to the internet. This model operates as an advanced planning and scheduling system (APS), accomplishing all data sharing between the ERPs from the suppliers to the customers.

Sometimes they occur in a traditional way with a well-seen aspect and thus look like similar to the model we already have in mind, but also there are times in which waiting lines occur in di erent formats becoming unperceivable to the common observer not yet introduced to the Queuing Theory. The present study aims in demonstrating the applicability of Mathematics. Statistics and the Queuing Theory to real tasks such as the waiting line of a bank cashier in the City of Jataí-Goiás. In this regard we present a short history of the Queuing Theory embracing its advent, the rst task to be dealt with, the de nitions and the adopted terminology looking forward to subsidize a theoretical base in an introductory level. As our object of observation is a waiting line of a bank cashier we additionally present a short history of the National Financial System in which comprehends every bank, and also the municipal law that rules the maximum waiting time in a line. After the choice of a bank agency in the City of Jataí-Goiás we succeeded to get access to the detailing tape of the cashiers under managers authorization. The tape has all the data about daily transactions. The time of analysis refers to the month of November 2014. After appropriate organization and data cataloging, they were processed according to the Queuing Theory illustrating its applicability. Results allowed us to work a few mathematical concepts, specially the idea of average. However, more detailed results and analysis were not dealt with in this work due to its complexity but will be considered in future studies that might take the present work as a starting point. As las tem presença marcante em nossa sociedade e nos acompanham desde o início da civilização. Algumas vezes manifestam-se de forma tradicional e apresentam caráter bastante visual assemelhando-se assim ao modelo que temos em nossas mentes, mas às vezes manifestam-se de formas variadas e tornam-se imperceptíveis ao olhar não familiarizado com a Teoria das Filas. O presente texto teve como propósito mostrar a aplicabilidade da matemática, estatística e Teoria das Filas a problemas reais tal como a la de guichê de caixa de uma agência bancária da cidade de Jataí-Go. Para isso apresentamos um breve histórico da Teoria das Filas, contemplando o seu surgimento, o primeiro problema estudado, as de nições e os termos empregados visando subsidiar um embasamento teórico em nível básico. Por ter se pautado na análise da la do caixa de uma agência bancária complementarmente apresentamos um breve histórico do Sistema Financeiro Nacional - SFN no qual todos os bancos encontram-se inseridos e a lei municipal que normatiza o tempo máximo de espera em la. Após escolhido uma agência bancária na cidade de Jataí-Go conseguimos com a autorização do gerente a ta detalhe dos caixas, a qual nos apresenta os dados referentes a movimentação diária. O período de análise refere-se ao mês de novembro do ano de 2014. Após a devida organização e catalogação os dados foram tratados sob o olhar da Teoria das Filas ilustrando a aplicabilidade desta teoria. Os resultados possibilitaram trabalhar alguns conceitos básicos da matemática, em especí co o conceito de média. Contudo, resultados e análises mais elaboradas deixaram de ser tratadas no presente texto, devido a sua complexidade, mas serão analisados em textos futuros que poderão ter este como ponto de partida.

Abstract:

This essay investigates why the Myth of the Holy Grail continue to occur within popular culture. Myths, tales and legends from ancient times have inspired authors throughout the centuries. The readers are not only served with a spectacular adventure, but the myths also contain messages with a moral and ethical guidance for us as beholders. This particular myth can be found within different media in our time and the essay will attempt to give some answers as to why the myth reappears in new forms over and over again. An analysis is performed by using the methodology of aesthetic reception within reception theory. The material chosen for the analysis is the work of art; The Da Vinci Code by author Dan Brown, where two different media forms will be represented, the novel and the film. The findings in the analysis revealed that the key to understanding the reasons for the occurrence of this medieval myth is the element of a quest that is present within the myth. This ingredient, where you embark on an adventure, will create feelings of excitement for the beholder. A second aspect found is that we as humans have an interest in our history. Therefore, myths and legends from our historical past will be naturally alluring for beholders and especially if they are linked to philosophical questions and ideas that can be applied to our modern society. The success that has followed The Da Vinci Code has its explanation in the fact that Brown has managed to make the myth of the Holy Grail more contemporary, the myth has then been rejuvenated. A suggestion for further research is to perform a study on beholders in focus group interviews in order to validate the findings in the analysis.

Thesis (MA)-- Stellenbosch University, 2013. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The following thesis aims to contribute to the field of teaching German as a foreign language. It investigates the evolutionary history of Suggestopaedia, an alternative teaching method which originated during the late 1970s. The Bulgarian psychiatrist, Dr. Georgi Lozanov, discovered that relaxation and a stress-free environment promote both accelerated learning and memory retention. Further research proves that the combined elements and techniques of this method play a significant role to positively manipulate brain activity as well as individual perceptions, which could eventually result in the development of the personality. The author of this study analyses both the contributions and shortcomings of Suggestopaedia, reporting from personal experience gathered while teaching at a university in South Africa, and subsequently suggests an altered version of the suggestopaedic teaching ways. Various foreign language teaching methodologies are examined and evaluated while the main focus remains on Suggestopaedia and its principle of holistic learning. By exploiting the eclectic aspects of the suggestopaedic teaching method, this thesis investigates to what extent selected elements of different conventional methods can be integrated into Suggestopaedic teaching. Thereby the author ultimately proposes a holistic, enriched and modernized variant of Lozanovs Suggestopaedia for the teaching of German at schools in South Africa, by demonstrating practical examples executed at a private school. Abstract:

Two questions are addressed: 1) whether a dream is meaningful as a whole, or whether the scenes are separate and unconnected, and 2) whether dream images are an epiphenomenon of a functional physiologicaL process of REM sleep, or whether they are akin to waking thought. Theories of REM sleep as a period of information-processing are reviewed. This is Linked with work on the relationship between dreaming and creativity, and between memory and imagery. Because of the persuasive evidence that REM sleep is implicated in the consolidation of memories there is a review of recent work on neural associative network models of memory. Two theories of dreams based on these models are described, and predictions with regard to the above two questions are made. Psychological evidence of relevance to the neural network theories is extensively reviewed. These predictions are compared with those of the recent application of structuralism to the study of dreams, which is an extension from its usual field of mythology and anthropology. The different theories are tested against four nights of dreams recorded in a sleep Lab. The analysis shows that not only do dreams concretise waking concerns as metaphors but that these concerns are depicted in oppositional terms, such as, for example, inside/outside or revolving/static. These oppositions are then permuted from one dream to the next until a resolution of the initial concern is achieved at the end of the night. An account of the use of the single case-study methodology in psychology is given, in addition to a replication of the analysis of one night's dreams by five independent judges. There is an examination of objections to the structuralist methodology, and of objections to the paradigm of multiple dream awakenings. The conclusion is drawn that dreams involve the unconscious dialectical step-by-step resolution of conflicts which to a great extent are consciously known to the subject. The similarity of dreams to day-dreams is explored, with the conclusion that the content of dreams is better explained by an account of metaphors we use when awake and by our daily concerns, than by reference to the physiology of REM sleep. It is emphasised that dreams can be meaningful even if they do not have a function.

O objetivo principal deste trabalho é apresentar uma associação dos cálculos elástico e plástico, para análise de lajes-cogumelo. Foram considerados painéis retangulares, com carregamento uniformemente distribuído. O cálculo elástico é utilizado como pré-dimensionamento, fornecendo a razão entre os momentos de vão e permitindo a fixação dos momentos de plastificação negativos. O cálculo plástico é feito através da Teoria das Charneiras Plásticas, que é utilizada na obtenção dos momentos de plastificação, com os quais é feito o dimensionamento. Também se apresentam dois exemplos completos, para comparar os resultados do cálculo elástico com aqueles relativos ao procedimento ora proposto. O cálculo elástico foi feito através do Processo dos Pórticos Equivalentes. Não houve diferença significativa entre os resultados obtidos com os dois processos, para os exemplos considerados. Novas pesquisas são sugeridas para aprimorar o procedimento proposto. The main aim of this work is to present an association of elastic plate theory and plastic analysis, to beamless slabs (flat slabs and flat plates) analysis. Rectangular panels uniformly loaded were considered. Elastic plate theory is used to predimensioning, determining the relation between positive bending moments and permiting to fix the ultimate negative moments of resistance. Plastic analysis is made by Yield Line Theory, that is used to obtain ultimate moments of resistance, which are used in dimensioning. Two complete examples are also presented, to compare results of elastic plate theory with those relative to proposed proceeding. Elastic calculus is made by Equivalent Frame Method. There was not significant difference between results obtained with the two processes in the considered examples. New researches are suggested in order to perfect proposed proceeding.

Orientador: Fernando Augusto Silva Marins Banca: Fernando Bernardi de Souza Banca: Renato da Silva Lima Resumo: Este trabalho apresenta uma aplicação real da teoria das restrições (theory of constraints - TOC) no gerenciamento de uma cadeia de suprimentos, demonstrando como esta metodologia pode trazer importantes melhorias no desempenho global do sistema de abastecimento. Tais melhorias são obtidas por intermédio da redução dos níveis gerais de estoques e, ao mesmo tempo, pela minimização das oportunidades de vendas perdidas, ocasionadas devido à indisponibilidade de produtos nos pontos de consumo (clientes finais). Os principais conceitos da TOC, tais como, os processos de raciocínio, a programação tambor-pulmão-corda (TPC) e o TPC-simplificado, foram adaptados do ambiente de manufatura para a utilização prática numa cadeia de suprimentos, permitindo a emersão dos principais dilemas que afetam o desempenho do processo de distribuição. A compreensão deste contexto propicia um melhor balanceamento entre os ganhos globais da cadeia e os ganhos pontuais de cada parceiro. Salienta-se, ainda, que o processo de estoque gerenciado pelo fornecedor (vendor-managed inventory - VMI) e os recursos do business-to-business (B2B) são fortalecidos quando utilizados junto aos preceitos da TOC, robustecendo o desempenho do sistema e diminuindo, ainda mais, os níveis de estoques, através da minimização do efeito chicote (bullwhip effect). Uma aplicação prática é apresentada para evidenciar a viabilidade e os benefícios da proposta, em que o ERP CIS (Customer Integrated System) utiliza, em seu módulo logístico, o VMI integrado à TOC e a um B2B na internet. O modelo opera como um sistema de planejamento e programação avançados (advanced planning and scheduling - APS), realizando todo o compartilhamento de informações entre os ERPs, desde os fornecedores até os clientes. Abstract: This research presents a real application of the theory of constraints (TOC) to the management of a supply chain, in order to demonstrate how this methodology can introduce important improvements in the entire supply system performance. These improvements are gained by decreasing the general inventory levels and, at the same time, reducing losses of sales opportunities due to the lack of goods at sales points (end-customers). The main concepts of TOC, as the thinking process, the drum-bufferrope schedule (DBR) and the simplified-DBR, were adapted from the manufacturing environment to a practical use in a supply chain, providing a better perception of the abstruse dilemmas that constrains the performance of the distribution system. The comprehension of this context enables a better balance between the global gains of the supply chain and each local earnings of each partner. Moreover, the vendor-managed inventory (VMI) and the business-to-business (B2B) are strengthened when related with the TOC conception, making a robust system performance and decreasing, even more, the inventory levels, by minimizing the bullwhip effect. A practical application is presented to evidence the feasibility and the benefits of this proposal, where the CIS ERP (Customer Integrated System) relates its logistic module the integrated VMI to TOC and B2B to the internet. Nesses sistemas pode haver flutuação do desempenho ao longo do dia devido, por exemplo, a mudança no número de servidores e nas taxas de chegada, levando à necessidade de considerar explicitamente tais variações em uma extensão ao modelo hipercubo ainda não explorada na literatura. Como ocorre em alguns SAE's, as ambulâncias melhor equipadas são reservadas para o atendimento exclusivo de chamados com risco de vida. Dessa maneira, a política de despacho pode ser diferenciada com a finalidade de reservar totalmente o atendimento de alguns servidores para certas gravidades de ocorrências. Além disso, somam-se à natureza aleatória desses sistemas, como por exemplo, as incertezas da disponibilidade das ambulâncias, a chegada de um novo chamado e sua localização. Nesse contexto, os objetivos do presente estudo são: (i) estender o modelo hipercubo de filas para reserva total de capacidade, dependendo do tipo do chamado; (ii) estender o modelo hipercubo de filas para torná-lo mais eficiente computacionalmente, sem haver perda de precisão durante a modelagem e resolução; e (iii) propor uma abordagem baseada no modelo hipercubo não-estacionário para organização do trabalho das ambulâncias em qualquer momento do dia. These systems may suffer, for example, performance fluctuations throughout the day, changes on the number of servers and on arrival rates, leading to the need to explicitly consider such variations in a hypercube model extension not yet explored in the literature. As occurs in some SAMU's, which reserve their best equipped ambulances to exclusively serve life-threating requests. Therefore, the dispatch policy can be differentiated in order to completely reserve the service of some ambulances to more severe requests. These problems add up to the random nature of these systems with uncertainties upon ambulance availability or the arrival of a new request and its location. Thus, this study aims to: (i) extend the hypercube queueing model to be able to capture the complete capacity reservation of advanced ambulances, depending on the request classification; (ii) extend the hypercube model in order to make it more computationally efficient, without losing any information during modeling and resolution. (iii) propose an approach based on nonstationary hypercube queueing model to organize the operation of ambulances at any time of the day. To verify the feasibility of these approaches, a case study is carried out on the SAMU from Bauru city (SAMU-Bauru), which, in addition to the advanced ambulance reservation for life-threating requests, is affected by daily variations in demand and ambulance availability. Abstract:

On Christmas Day in 1841, Fanny Hensel presented her husband with a Christmas gift—Das Jahr—a piano cycle comprised of twelve pieces, each one depicting a month of The Year. Not long thereafter, Fanny and husband Wilhelm would collaborate to create a Gesamtkunstwerk, reworking Das Jahr and expanding it by two additional expressions: vignettes drawn into the score by Wilhelm, and epigrams, snippets of poetry by master German poets. This dissertation seeks to answer the question: “What meaning is achieved by the intersection of the three modalities present in Das Jahr: textual (epigram), visual (vignette), and aural (music)?” The methodology considers the broader texts from which the epigrams are drawn in conjunction with Wilhelm’s vignettes and Hensel’s sonic landscape to arrive at an emergent meaning. An informed musical analysis drawing on formal considerations, contour, metaphor in music, topic theory, and harmonic function has been employed to arrive at the interpretation that will be presented. By analyzing these three modalities in conjunction with one another, a compelling narrative emerges, whereby the words of poets, the artwork of Wilhelm, and the aural world of Fanny conjoin to tell a story, one that relies upon the relationship between text, art, and music.

Abstract:

Abstract This thesis investigates a set of equity market phenomena associated with investors' trading activity, using a comprehensive Finnish Central Securities Depository (FCSD) database that records practically all trades by Finnish investors. This database enables us to classify a large number of heterogeneous investors using both economic and institutional characteristics. The first essay classifies investors by trading activity. It analyzes trading styles of active and passive investors during the boom in technology stocks 1997–2000. We find that the herding tendency of active investors grew monotonically, year by year. Particularly large active investors used momentum and growth strategies. Moreover, buy pressures of active investors were positively related to contemporaneous daily returns. Passive investors, on the other hand, herd very strongly and their trading exhibited a contrarian style throughout the sample period. The second essay focuses on the relation between day trading of individual investors and intraday stock price volatility. I find a strong positive relation between the individual investors' day trades and volatility for actively day traded stocks. This finding suggests that day trading tends to increase volatility and/or day traders tend to become more active on the days of high volatility. The third essay tests the theoretical proposition of Amihud and Mendelson (1986) that investors hold assets with higher bid-ask spreads for longer periods. We measure holding periods of individual investors directly and find that they are positively related to spreads. The models control for a variety of other stock characteristics (e.g. value vs. growth orientation) and investors' attributes (e.g. gender) affecting holding periods. The fourth essay studies how both individual and institutional investors with different levels of capital gains and losses react to earnings announcements. I find that both sign and magnitude of capital gains affect individual investors' abnormal trading volumes. Individual investors are less prone to sell when they are carrying loses rather than gains. Furthermore, they react less to earnings announcements when capital gains or losses are large (over 20%). Taken together these findings provide support for prospect theory. Institutional investors appear to be less affected by psychological factors underlying prospect theory.

Esta análise e as reflexõe que a seguiram foram baseadas principalmente nos estudos realizados por Piaget (1975, 1975b, 1977), Piaget & Inhelder (1975, 1977), Jun (2000) e Fischbein (1975). Utilizamos como documentos as transcrições das entrevistas (pré e pós-testes) realizadas individualmente com cada aluno. Inicialmente os estudantes foram entrevistados (pré-testes) com o intuito de identificar a familiaridade com a noção de evento probabilístico ou aleatório. Numa segunda etapa (pós-testes) esse conhecimento (ou a ausência parcial/total dele) foi posto à prova numa tentativa de estabelecer relações com um conteúdo específico da Química (Teoria das Colisões). Os resultados obtidos apontam para grandes discrepâncias entre o modelo cinético de colisões elaborado pelos estudantes e o cientificamente aceito. The purpose of this work is to contribute for Science teaching making analysis and reflections on the way high school students appropriate the concepts and models related to Chemical Kinetics, mainly particles collisions' kinetics model in chemical reaction (Collision Theory Model). This investigation was based on Piaget and Inhelder' studies (1975), and also on Piaget (1975, 1977), Jun (2000), and Fischbein (1975) works, which have studied the connection between the young students and the probabilistic thinking. The analysis of the document evidences had the aim to evaluate if the students would be able to achieve generalization and develop concepts about Probability Theory. In the second part these concepts or its partial/total lacks were linked with chemical kinetics in attempt to establish relationships between correct explanation of collision kinetic model and the students' failure models. The obtained result points to great misconceptions related to the correct and scientific model and the student's.

Estudamos a localização de férmions não-massivos em paredes de domnio (3-brana) imersa no espaço de 4+1 dimensões em cenários Randall-Sundrum (espaço warped), e Rubakov-Shaposhnikov (espaço plano), respectivamente. Abordamos a localização do campo fermiônico, acoplando os férmions com uma função de campo escalar, cuja solução tipo kink simples é deformada a uma solução tipo kink duplo. No contexto de nosso estudo, este tipo de configuração kink duplo permite ilustrar o fenômeno da separação das branas. Construímos novos modelos não-lineares em teoria de campos que forneçam configurações do tipo kink duplo. Estes modelos são construídos a partir da deformação do modo-zero associado `a equação de estabilidade de outros modelos bem estabelecidos. Por sua vez, estes modelos são aplicáveis na descrição de fenômenos críticos e em cenários de mundos-brana. Além disso, temos conhecimento de que não ´e possível a localiza¸c˜ao de campo de gauge por meio unicamente da curvatura (warped). Propomos um mecanismo que leve à localização do modo-zero do campo de gauge abeliano em branas espessas por meio de uma função suave e contínua que torna a ação normalizável. Esta função suave funcionaria como uma função dielétrica. Neste mesmo contexto, aplicamos este mecanismo para a localização do modo-zero do campo de Kalb-Ramond em branas espessas In this thesis we analyze the localization of matter field in double branes. We study the localization of massless fermions in domain wall (3-branes) immerse in a space 4+1 dimensions in Randall-Sundrum (warped space), and Rubakov-Shaposhnikov (flat space) scenarios, respectively. We approach the fermions localization, coupling the fermions to a scalar field functional, whose kink-like solutions are deformed to double kink solutions. In the context of our study, this double kink (two-kink) allows to illustrate the brane splitting phenomenon. We construct new non-linear models in field theory which provides double kink configurations. These models are constructed from the deformation of the zero mode associated to the stability equations of well-established models. In turn, these models are applicable in the description of critical phenomena and brane-worlds scenarios. Moreover, we know that it is not possible to achieve gauge fields localization on brane by means of only the warped curvature. We propose a mechanism that leads to the localization of zero mode of Abelian gauge field in thick branes by means of a smooth and continuous function which turns out the action normalizable. This smooth function would work as a dielectric function. In this same context we apply this mechanism for the localization of zero mode of Kalb-Ramond field in thick branes

Abstract:

Situational crisis communication theory (SCCT), experimentally created by W. Timothy Coombs in 2007, is designed to help crisis managers evaluate a crisis situation and craft an effective response strategy based on the organization's crisis history, the crisis type, and prior reputation with stakeholders.This thesis examined the November 2015 controversial handbook policy update from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which ruled same-sex marriage as grounds for excommunication. Exploring the policy change as a crisis in the context of SCCT and comparing the Church's crisis response strategies with the recommended strategies of SCCT exposes a gap in current SCCT literature—the theory does not lend itself well to crises where an organization's values or guiding morals are under attack. In these scenarios, the organization is unlikely to apologize for or acknowledge the crisis. The study results demonstrate substantial shifts in stakeholder attitudes following certain strategic statements from the Church even though the Church did not strictly adhere to SCCT's guidelines. According to SCCT's guidelines, because the stakeholder groups framed the handbook change as a crisis of organizational misdeed with injuries the majority of the time, the Church should have responded with third-tier strategies that bolstered its reputation and apologized or compensated those harmed by the policy. Instead, the Church has never apologized for the policy change and specifically reminded stakeholders of its past policies regarding same-sex marriage. Although the Church used the same strategies throughout the entire crisis, the Church's relatively larger use of crisis basics, justification, and protection in its second wave of statements on November 13, 2015 shifted the crisis framing and sentiment of bloggers and John Dehlin from negative sentiment with frames of high-level crisis responsibility to neutral and positive sentiment with a majority of blogs and social media posts not framing the policy change as a crisis.

A presente pesquisa pretende analisar o período do pensamento filosófico de B. Russell e L. Wittgenstein entre os anos de 1905 e 1914 descrevendo o desenvolvimento da filosofia do atomismo lógico presente no Tractatus logico-philosophicus de Wittgenstein. Para tanto, será observada a crítica deste à teoria do juízo desenvolvida por Russell, a qual seria fundamento para a teoria do conhecimento que o último elaborava. Reconhecemos, com base nas críticas, que Russell sofria uma forte influência do empirismo de sua época, o que tornou sua epistemologia frágil. Essa fragilidade é evidenciada por Wittgenstein, que, ao criticar alguns pontos fundamentais da teoria do juízo, fez com que Russell assumisse essa característica de suas teses e inevitavelmente parasse a produção de seu segundo projeto filosófico depois de Principia mathematica, intitulado atualmente Theory of knowledge e geralmente conhecido como \"o manuscrito de 1913\". Wittgenstein, por outro lado, produz nesse mesmo período sua primeira e única obra publicada em vida, o Tractatus logico-philosophicus, em que inaugura e propõe um novo entendimento da lógica da linguagem por meio de uma radicalização da teoria russelliana das descrições. Essa radicalização é feita mediante a postulação de nomes logicamente simples que designam objetos simples. Essa postulação é justificada pela teoria da figuração elaborada no Tractatus, a qual sustenta o elo necessário entre lógica e mundo e contribui para que o sentido de todo e qualquer pensamento seja mostrado sem a exigência de explicações atreladas ao empirismo. This research aims to analyze the period of philosophical thought of B. Russell and L. Wittgenstein between the years of 1905 and 1914 describing the development of the philosophy of logical atomism present in the Tractatus logico-philosophicus of Wittgenstein. For this aim, will be observed the criticism of Wittgenstein to the theory of judgment developed by Russell and which would be grounds for the theory of knowledge that Russell was elaborating. We recognize, from the criticism, that Russell had a strong influence of the empiricism of his day, which made his epistemology fragile. This weakness is evidenced by Wittgenstein that, by criticizing some key points of the theory of judgment, made Russell take the fragility of his own arguments and inevitably stopped with the production of his second philosophical project after Principia mathematica, as currently entitled Theory of knowledge and usually known as \"the 1913 manuscript.\" Wittgenstein, on the other hand, produces in the same period his first and only book published in life, the Tractatus logico-philosophicus, which opens and proposes a new understanding of the logic of language through a radicalization of Russell\'s theory of descriptions. This radicalization is done through the postulation of logically simple names that designate simple objects. The postulation is justified by the picture theory drafted in the Tractatus, which maintains the necessary link between logic and world and contributes that the sense of any thought be shown without the requirement of explanations linked to empiricism.

Atualmente, a simulação por computador é usada nas mais diversificadas áreas, como previsão meteorológica, dimensionamento de centrais telefônicas, e estudos aerodinâmicos. A presente dissertação valida e comprova a eficácia de modelos de simulação construídos no software Mathematica 10 por meio do software Arena 14.50. Para isso, foi construído um modelo que, sem focar nas condições reais do sistema, simula de forma hipotética (levando em conta apenas o número de canais de comunicação disponíveis e o tempo de médio duração das chamadas) o tráfego oferecido por chamadas de áudio e vídeo em uma ERB (Estação Rádio-Base) CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) ou GSM (Global System for Mobile) que nesse trabalho, é representada por um sistema de fila. Diversos cenários de tráfego foram analisados utilizando diferentes parâmetros como a quantidade de chamadas ingressantes, tempo de duração da chamada e o número de canais disponíveis. Os resultados finais comprovaram que os modelos de simulação criados no Mathematica 10 são equivalentes aos modelos de simulação construídos no Arena 14.50 Abstract: The constant evolution of power of computers together with their low cost of aquisition, make them indispensable in building of simulation models. Nowadays, computer simulation is used in a variety of areas such weather forecasting, sizing of telephone stations and in aerodynamic studies. This essay validate and proves the effectiveness of these simulation models built on The Mathematica 10 software with the Arena 14.50. In order to do that, a model was built and without focusing on System s real condition, it simulates in a hypothetical way (considering only the number of communication channels available and average length of the calls) The traffic offered by audio and vídeo calls through a RBS (Radio Base Station) CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) or GSM (Global System for Mobile) which herein is shown through a queue system. Various traffic scenarios were analyzed using different setups, like quantity of incoming calls, length of calls and number of available channels.
