Abstract:
Poetry in the Age of the Arms Race: Ingrid Sjöstrand’s Poem “Otänkbart” (“Unthinkable”) on the NATO Rearmament Decisions of 1979 Within the popular movements poetry is used as a tool in the struggle for social and political change. The poetry cherished by the movements can thus be described as utilitarian, performing rhetorical functions in relevant contexts. The article deals with the poem “Otänkbart” (“Unthinkable”) by Ingrid Sjöstrand, which addresses a pertinent social problem from the perspective of the peace movement. The poem was published in Dagens Nyheter, Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, on 28 December, 1979. It is a response to the NATO decision made at a summit conference in Brussels on 12 December of that year to deploy nuclear weapons in Europe. A theoretical basis for the analysis is provided by Ron Eyerman and Andrew Jamison’s cognitive approach to social movements. In my study, I consider “Unthinkable” as part of the peace movement’s cognitive practice, exploring the explanation of the arms race formulated in the poem. I also investigate the relationship of the poem to articles published in Dagens Nyheter in December 1979 concerning the NATO decision, as well as to other texts dealing with related themes. Further, I scrutinize the poem’s uses of rhetorical devices and strategies to convince the reader to adopt the peace movement’s position on the issue and to create commitment and readiness to act. The analysis shows that “Unthinkable” was clearly a part of the peace movement’s knowledge production concerning the causes and consequences of the arms race, and of the movement’s values and alternative strategies for action. Structurally, “Unthinkable” offers creative opportunities for committed reception.

Abstract:
Installing the »I«. Editorials by Olof Lagercrantz in Dagens Nyheter 1960–1975 This study concerns the Swedish writer and critic Olof Lagercrantz who served as both editor in chief and cultural editor of Sweden’s major daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, between 1960 and 1975. The material upon which the article is based is a corpus of 300 editorials, mostly unsigned and hitherto unnoticed by scholars. By focusing on matters of style, it is shown that the texts by Lagercrantz distinctively break the laws of the editorial as traditional genre, which in short involved framing in the newspaper’s political standpoints in by speaking from the position of an editorial »we«. Lagercrantz’s editorials differ from this well-trodden mode by using styles of writing that resemble of everyday language and by using forms of letter-writing. To a wide extent, the editorials also play with intertextual allusions to the established literary canon, and often take literature and literary issues as their starting point. The article stresses how Lagercrantz finds strategies of installing »himself« in the text, i.e. how he constantly seeks ways of establishing an »I« in a type of text where this particular word is not allowed. The letter-forms seem to convey the sense of presence of a subject in the text. Metaphors of body and voice, and mentioning of everyday, mundane events create effects of intimacy. Attention is drawn to the fact that Lagercrantz even on the level of grammar conveys a sense of body in the text: the number of substantives is by comparison quite high with Lagercrantz – constantly avoiding the adjective, he prefers words which literally have matter, substance. Finally, it is suggested that the installation of the »I« in the editorials be considered a performance in both a linguistic and theatrical sense. By means of contrast, Lagercrantz’s figurative and literary writing make apparent the laws of the editorial as generally written and understood. The latter thereby also seems to be highlighted as text, as form of language.

Abstract:
This article examines reports of physical punishment at the national Swedish Boy Scout camp Åvatyr in 1950. The Swedish newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Expressen described the events in terms of bullying and violence, while the camp directors declared that the reports were merely exaggerated accounts of innocent pranks and practical jokes. This article draws information from newspaper articles, Scout magazines and archival sources to discuss how the incidents at the Åvatyr camp tapped into a debate on disciplinary measures against children in Sweden. The analysis also concerns how these acts of punishment related to the Boy Scouts’ scheme of citizenship instruction. Finally, the long-term effects of this purported scandal are evaluated, including a call for reform of masculinity and citizenship ideals within the Boy Scout movement during the following decade.

Abstract:
The conflict in Ukraine has prompted analyses about the return of cold war divisions to Europe. This study focusses on the role the news media plays in the conflict by examining how the visual and textual practices of news framing help constitute geopolitical rationality and legitimise foreign policy. We analyse how the framing of the conflict in Die Welt, Dagens Nyheter, Helsingin Sanomat and The Guardian developed through four key events between February 2014 and February 2015. The analysis indicates that by promoting particular news frames the newspapers contributed to the legitimation of European Union policies, which are premised upon supporting the Ukrainian government in its military campaign in eastern Ukraine and placing responsibility for the conflict onto Russia. Hence, we argue that the news framing eventually contributed to the naturalisation of the ‘new cold war’ as a geopolitical rationality, orienting and legitimising foreign policy in Europe.

Abstract:
The media is a key institution in producing, legitimizing and disseminating cultural classifications. From this perspective, newspapers and their sections devoted to culture are particularly interesting. This article examines how the structures of quality European newspapers have changed over time and in different socio-historical contexts, especially regarding the amount of space allocated to and the placement of articles related to culture. We draw on data from Helsingin Sanomat (Finland), Le Monde (France), ABC/El País (Spain), Dagens Nyheter (Sweden) and The Guardian (United Kingdom) – covering the time frame from 1960 to 2010. We use three types of data: individual articles about culture (N = 11,775), data on all the issues (N = 585) and full editions of the newspapers (N = 30). We show that the amount of space dedicated to culture has increased but that the placement of articles on culture has shifted slightly. We detect only weak signs of the assumed crisis of cultural journalism.

Abstract:
Despite the fact that defense and apology have been studied thoroughly in rhetoric and communication research in recent decades, their counterpart; the accusation has received surprisingly limited attention from rhetorical criticism. This essay sets out to remedy parts of these shortcomings by suggesting to define the accusation as a situated act where somebody ascribes guilt to a group or individual. The definition ties the accusation to the representation of acts considered to be in violation of existing norms and the essay argues that the logic of narrative determines the forms and functions of an accusation. The essay tests the definition through close readings of accusations from the debate about the proper handling of the corona-virus, as this debate has played out in the Scandinavian countries during 2020. Two extreme examples of accusations – one situated in the formal legal system, one situated in an informal, private conversation – are briefly analyzed before the essay turns to its main case in the form of an article from Dagens Nyheter, in which Swedish scientists accuse the Swedish health authorities and the Swedish government for neglect

Abstract:
From an international perspective, media representations of population ageing have been described as apocalyptic in character. In this article, we analyse the way population ageing is represented in three Swedish newspapers: Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter and Västerbottens-Kuriren. The aim is to investigate Swedish news-press representations of population ageing and the old age identities that they offer. We conduct qualitative analyses of the articulations between the verbal content and the use of illustrations, metaphorical language, headlines and captions using the concepts offered by discourse theory. The analysis of the material shows that the studied newspapers firmly position population ageing within a wider discourse of political economy and as a threat to the concept of welfare. Growth is promoted as a self-evident means for adjusting to the expected threat. Illustrations and metaphorical language helped to constitute population ageing as a serious, dichotomised (e.g. young vs. Old) and emotive (e.g. addressing anxiety and ear) problem. The analyses also show how the representations of population ageing bear some populist features, and we argue that such features support a de-politicisation of the phenomenon population ageing.

AbstractOn 29 April 1994, the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter published a short report about the diplomatic contacts between Sweden and the United States concerning the activities of an American military ship in the Swedish economic zone.' According to the report, the USNS Kane had some three weeks previously carried out surveys in the Swedish economic zone somewhere between the islands of Gotland and Oland. The purpose had been to study currents and other water movements on the bottom of the sea. According to the report, the Swedish coastguard had suspected marine scientific research, which required prior notification.2 The staff on the Kane had responded that the activity was in fact survey, which is distinct from marine scientific research. The military status of the vessel was also invoked as a justification of the military nature of the activity. The coastguard reported the Kane's activity to the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, which had contacted the American authorities for explanation. The Kane had left the Swedish economic zone after the completion of her mission.

Maciej Zaremba Bielawski jest jednym z czołowych szwedzkich publicystów i literatów polskiego pochodzenia, reporterem znanego sztokholmskiego dziennika „Dagens Nyheter”, laureatem prestiżowych skandynawskich konkursów dziennikarskich i wyróżnień pokojowych. Maciej Zaremba’s Huset med de tva tornen as an “Arch-Polish Reportage Story Written in Swedish” Maciej Zaremba-Bielawski is one the leading Swedish publicists and writers of Polish origin, a reporter of the well-known Stockholm newspaper Dagens Nyheter, a prizewinner of prestigious Scandinavian journalist awards and peace prizes. He is a well-read and well-acknowledged author in Poland as well; all of his books are accessible to the Polish readership. The article investigates the influence of features characteristic for the Polish school of reportage on the oeuvre of the author of De rena och de andra: om tvangssteriliseringar, rashygien och arvsynd (On Eugenic Sterilisations in Sweden and elsewhere), in particular in connection with his latest book titled Huset med de tva tornen (A House with Two Turrets). Firstly, the article attempts to identify its genre traits, leaning towards the claim that it is a literary reportage woven around an autobiographic tale. Secondly, the article tries to highlight these traits of Huset med de tva tornen which confirm the thesis about the literary character of reportage and the use of patterns developed by the Polish authors of reportage books. The literary character of the discussed book is noticeable in the humanist approach of the author, understood as the reflection not only on the condition of humankind and world, but also on his own attitude towards the topic, as well as posing deliberate questions about the place and the role of values in the world. It is seen in the deliberation contained in Huset med de tva tornen, which is a multidimensional reflection on Polish history, fate of the Polish Jews, anti-Semitism as well as first and foremost memory.

Abstract:
Most children and families have not had direct contact with child psychological and psychiatric experts. Instead they encounter developmental theories, etiological explanations and depictions of childhood disorders through indirect channels such as newspapers. Drawing on actor–network theory, this article explores two child psychological and psychiatric modes of ordering children’s mental health discernible in Sweden’s largest morning newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, during the years 1980 to 2008: a psychodynamic mode and a neuro-centered mode. In the article I show how these two relatively contemporaneous modes greatly differed in how they enacted children’s mental health. The psychodynamic mode stressed the parents’ role in structuring and affecting the child’s unconscious and saw them as the primary cause of any mental illness. In contrast, the neuro-centered mode highlighted that mental issues were related to the child’s brain and proposed different solutions depending on whether the child’s brain functioned in a ‘normal’ or ‘atypical’ manner. Each mode moreover suggested differing contexts to their discussions, with the psychodynamic mode solely discussing the parental milieu while the neuro-centered mode mainly focused on how society affected children with ‘atypical’ brains. The two modes thus had significantly diverging implications for the reader on how to understand and manage children and their psychological well-being. I further argue in the article for the relevance of actor–network theory in historical studies of psychology and psychiatry.

Abstract:
Involvering set i gang prosessar ein ikkje har kontroll over. Det kan vere krevjande. Men vi treng å utsetje oss for kvarandre. God lesnad! 1 Lundby, Knut (2021). Religion i medienes grep. Abstract:
Per Jørgensen: Danish national identity and the media at the Olympic Games 1908-1960It has often been said that sport, and not least soccer, plays an important role in the construction of national identity. This is also the case in Denmark. This paper examines how the subject of Danish national consciousness, national feelings and nationalism, in the article collectively called »Danishness«, was culturally expressed through sport journalism in the period 1908-1960. The subject matter is the soccer- tournaments in those specific Olympic Games where Denmark took part. The discourse of the sport journalism in the paper »Politiken« has been hermeneutically analyzed. Research on how nationalism is expressed in one country requires international comparisons to allow theoretical generalizations. Therefore a minor study of the sport journalism of the Swedish newspaper »Dagens Nyheter« has been carried out regarding selected soccer-matches with Swedish participation in the Olympic Games in 1912, 1948 and 1952. Many of the characteristics of present day society referred to as »Danishness« are also explicit in the period 1908-1960 in the newspaper »Politiken«. A comparison between »Politiken« and »Dagens Nyheter« seems to show that the Danish discourse has distinctively Danish characteristics.

Abstract:
Compared to many other countries, Sweden has managed the COVID-19 pandemic with no lockdowns, less regulation and more voluntary action expected of citizens and organizations. In this article, the authors explore media representations of national preventative strategies and how they were anchored in broader discourses. The article aims to analyse the development of crisis narratives and struggles over legitimacy during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden. Employing a critical discourse analysis, the authors investigate the editorials and opinion articles in Sweden’s largest morning newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, during the spring of 2020. The authors combine descriptive analyses of the development of the crisis narratives with discursive analyses of conflicting ideologies in the debate. The study indicates that three crisis narratives dominated the debates: health, the economy and democracy. Within and between these narratives, struggles over legitimacy in the handling of COVID-19 were captured in several conflicting perspectives or paradoxes: Swedish exceptionalism versus the world, centralization versus decentralization and herd immunity versus herd humanism.

This study examines the media discourse on the 2002 coup d’état against the government of Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, with the aim of exploring how ideology in media discourse helps construct democracy in a Latin American political context. Critical discourse analysis is used to examine written pieces from Dagens Nyheter (Sweden), El País (Uruguay), and the New York Times (US). The study finds that the discourse on the overthrow and the events preceding it constructs the coup as a potential victory for democracy and as the definitive end of Chávez. However, after the failure of the coup and the reinstallation of Chávez one can perceive discursive renegotiations, such as the publishing of non-fundamental criticism of the overthrow. The study argues that the media discourse on the coup displays a highly relativistic attitude towards democracy, which serves the interests of the elite classes in Venezuela and of US hegemony in global politics. The article also argues that the flexibility of the discourse at hand shows the need for a detailed analysis of how ideology is (re)formed in media discourse.

Abstract:
Hver morgen flyr ravnene ut i verden for å samle ny viten.
