Full textThe noun of Gervečiai dialect is analyzed in the project. While writing the project, a very rare and in none dialect recorded ending of the dative case of some singular nouns of the masculine gender, i.e. -au, was found. Not all the nouns possess it. Systemically this ending is present in the nouns of the stems a, ia, iia: vé jåu, kìšk’åu, laukáu. In the opinion of V. Mažiulis, it is the oldest Baltic ending of the dative case of singular nouns of the aforesaid stems. The inflexional diphthong au was made monophthong and turned into -ō: sūnau>sūnō. This ō naturally turned into -uo: sú nuo. We may wonder about V. Mažiulis’ perspicacity as then the forms with the ending -au were not known yet. However, very archaic forms often survive in isolated dialects. Such is the dialect of Gervečiai. The aforementioned ending of the singular dative case -uo (vilkuo, låũkuo) is also possessed by Gervečiai dialect as a parallel one. The postposition locative cases of Gervečiai dialect are also worth attention. The oldest locative has been preserved: laukúosu, ruñko.su. Near it all four postposition locatives are present though only the remains of the aliative and adesive are encountered. The locative case of by-place (aliative) is used in Gervečiai dialect, too, but the cases of use are already rare. It states that the character or action approaches (moves to) the place (person) which is expressed by the form of this case. The locative case of... [to full text]

Full textThe main purpose of this research was to set grammatical and semantic typology of six-word – length Lithuanian collocations. Collocations were extracted automatically from the „Corpus of Contemporary Lithuanian Language“ using statistical Gravity Counts method. The Source of this study concist of 100 million words. Six–words–length collocations are very rare, two, three, four–length-words collocations make 85% of all noun collocations. It was notified that as the phrase is longer, as more seldom it is used in Corpora. In this study collocations were researched grammatically and semantically. Grammatically researhed collocations were devided into six types, accourding to the number of nouns used in it. Those types are made of collocations which have one, two, three, four, five, six nouns. All those types were researched more deeply. Collocations were annotated using automatical marphology analysis program. In this way all possible grammatical collocation models concist of three nouns collocations – 255 models (31.33 %). Different collocations number is not equal to different grammatical models. 1560 different collocations were found. The most of different collocations have four nouns – 459 which makes 1/3 of all collocations. Despite the variaty of grammatical models, the models which are made of single collocations are the most frequent. The more noun collocation type has, the less single grammatical models can be made, for example, single one noun collocations make... [to full text]

Full textThere are many words in standard Lithuanian with unfixed stress. This is especially peculiar to nominal words. Thus this work will deal with such nominal words like simple nouns the stress of which has been corrected by the subcommittee dealing with the norms of stress of the State Committee on pronunciation and stress. These norms were presented in the recommendation called ‘Some simple noun stress’. The work will also deal with such simple nouns the stress of which hasn’t been specified by the State Committee on stress, but which are widely used in the existent language. Their variations of stress are not mentioned in any sources. The nouns having contiguity in standardization editions are also included in this work. The spread of standard stress of simple nouns was researched in three different locations: in Lazdynai and Moletai regions and in the town of Prienai. According to the first research based on the recommendations of the Lithuanian State Committee on language 500 respondents were questioned. During the second research 495 native speakers in the same regions were asked. The results were to show whether the real usage corresponds the standards of the State Committee on language. The results also had to show whether erratic stress variants are established in colloquial speech. Before carrying out both researches a lot of stuff on standardization had been studied and analysed. The method comparison had to help to define if the stress standards of the researched... [to full text]

Full textThis paper aims to provide a description of two main word-formation categories of Latvian nouns: agent names and action names. It was attempted to divide the collected data (suffix and ending derivatives) into clearly defined word-formation types, to determine the meaning of different word-formation types and productivity of word-formation types, analyse the semantics and structure of derivatives, and to provide a clear systematic description of the formation of the aforementioned Latvian language word-formation categories.

Full textIn the Lithuanian colloquial language, diminutives are mostly made from nouns, less frequently from adjectives, and rarely from numeral. Diminutives of nouns and adjectives are offen formed from common suffixes. Diminutives of numerals are made from three roots – šimt-, tūkstant-, milijon- and three mostly used suffixes -elis, -ėlis, -(i)ukas. Diminutives are suffixal derivatives and they are used in different meanings of formation. In accordance with to what you want to express using the same or diferent affix, diminutives of colloquial language usually denotes smallness and (or) positive/negative evaluation. Diminutive is one of the most distinct means of expressiveness, which shows the relation between the speaker and named object, reveals synonymy and individuality of speakers character.

In this work “Rendering of definite/indefinite noun category of the French language into the Lithuanian language” is analysed the translation of the French nouns and determiners into the Lithuanian, their possible transformations in the translation and which ways the translator chooses to transfer them to the translation. After the analyze it was discovered that the noun can be translate into verb, participle, half-participle, adjective or adverb. It was observed that the noun with the adverbs which express the smallness, the endearment, gets a diminutive form or a new sense. A one-word noun can be translated into word group. The proper noun can be the common noun to accentuate the type of the person. The translation of the determiners into Lithuanian is difficult, because the Lithuanian doesn’t have this category and a translator must find the other ways or leave out. It was observed that the determiners were change by adverb, pronoun, prepositional or case in the Lithuanian. Sometimes the definite article before adjective gets the pronominal form.
