Abstract:
Background  Occupation-focused and occupation-based interventions can potentially promote occupational engagement among community-dwelling older people, but there is limited evidence to identify the most effective and cost-effective interventions. For independent-living older people, there is a lack of evidence to determine if occupation-focused and occupation-based interventions have an effect on their occupational engagement. For older people who need assistance because of bathing disabilities, there is limited evidence of the effects of occupation-focused and occupation-based interventions

I–HOPE is an instrument that can be used to examine person–environment fit in the home. The instrument is developed in the United States and involves forty-four activity cards that are to be sorted by the client to address the activities that are problematic in his/her everyday life. The overall purpose of the study was the identification of factors which influence the freedom of physically disabled people, within South African society, to make choices that will enable them to conduct their daily lives independently. Many long-term wheelchair users find themselves unable to accomplish their former daily routines due to fatigue and weakness caused by cardiopulmonary decompensation (CPD). This study showed that long-term survivors of quadriplegia can improve stamina and strength, and therefore participation in daily life occupations, through participation in a regular exercise program using equipment specifically designed for them. Increased aerobic capacity, achieved through regular exercise, has proven with many populations to increase stamina and strength, thereby increasing participation in daily occupat
