Abstract:
Mr. Brown has tried to explore this heavy topic in his latest fictional work titled ‘Origin’. He is a modern American author famous for his titillating mystery thrillers. His iconic character, Mr. Langdon, a character that he repeats in most of his works, is a professor of Symbology at Harvard University, who always manages to strangely land in the middle of some unimaginable situation, the extrication from which needs an in-depth knowledge of religious symbols, arts, and mythologies. The respected professor is able to decode and decipher certain ciphers (which keeps the audience enthralled) leading the reader through an adventurous journey to a surprising end. Like always, from “Da Vinci Code” to “Angels and Demons”, Brown weaves his narrative very adeptly combining the ancient with the modern.

Abstract:
The antioxidant activity and polysaccharide composition of seaweed is influenced by species (red, green and brown seaweed), geographical conditions, extraction methods, solvents, temperature and the length of time of extraction. The purpose of this study was to known the total polysaccharide and antioxidant activity in red, green and brown seaweed extracts from Jangkar Situbondo beach. Method. The study was conducted on red, green and brown seaweed extracted with ethanol and water to determine total polysaccharides. Antioxidant analysis uses the method 2,2-diphenyl1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. Total polysaccharide and antioxidant activity were observed statistically using two-way ANOVA. The results of this study show that the polysaccharide content in seaweed water extract was significantly higher than ethanol extract, especially in brown seaweed. Seaweed water extracts showed higher antioxidant activity than ethanol extracts. The antioxidant activity of brown seaweed was significantly higher than that of green and red seaweed. Conclusion. Seaweeds have high antioxidant activity in water extracts. Brown seaweed water extract contains high polysaccharides than green and red seaweed. Antioxidant activity in brown seaweed is also higher than in green and red seaweed.

Abstract:
Background: The prevalence of stunting toddlers in Indonesia is still high. The causes of stunting include the low nutritional value of food consumed by infants. Foods that are rich in nutrients include cowpea and brown rice. Objective: to determine the acceptability and protein and calcium content of porridge with the addition of cowpea and rice through organoleptic testing. Method: this type ofresearch is quasi-experimental. Data collection through organoleptic test on the baby’s mother and acceptance test in baby. Addition of cowpea and brown rice are X1 cowpea 100% brown rice 50% and X2 cowpea 50% and brown rice 100% Analysis of organoleptic test data on porridge using Mann Whitney. Results: Statistical test results showed that the use of cowpea and brown rice affected the color of the porridge (p=0.00) and the taste of the porridge (p=0.04). The use of cowpea and brown rice had no effect on the aroma of porridge (p=0.06), texture (p=0.93) and preference level (p=0.94). Results acceptance porridge with formula X2 more acceptable than X1 because have a higher average and less limp. The highest content of pro-tein and calcium in porridge at X1 is 3.29% and 70.40 mg / kg. Conclusion: the use of cowpea and brown rice in MP-ASI baby porridge affected the organoleptic test results in the color category, and he taste of the porridge.Keywords: cowpea, brown rice, weaning food

Abstract:
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh lama penyimpanan terhadap kualitas telur ayam kampungdan ayam Lohman Brown. Rancangan acak lengkap (RAL) pola faktorial dengan 2 faktor perlakuan yaitu telur ayamkampung dan ayam Lohmnan Browm dengan 4 faktor lama penyimpanan 0, 7, 14, 21 hari pada suhu ruang dan 3kali ulangan dan setiap ulangan terdiri dari 10 butir telur digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Hasi penelitian berupatelur dengan kualitas yang baik dengan lama penyimpanan yang optimal dengan menguji eksterior telur dan interiortelur seperti indeks telur, warna kuning telur, pH, Haugh Unit telur serta kandungan atau populasi mikroba yangtumbuh selama penyimpanan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terjadi perbedaan yang nyata (P<0,05) pada eksterioryaitu pada kebersihan dan tekstur permukaan telur, dan pada interior juga berbeda nyata secara statistik pada HUtelur, sedangkan perlakuan yang lainya tidak berbeda (P>0,05). Dapat disimpulkan bahwa perlakuan penyimpanan0, 7, 14, 21 hari pada telur ayam kampung dan telur ayam Lohman Brown secara eksterior dan interior mengalamipenurunan kualitas namun masih layak dikonsumsi hingga lama penyimpanan 21 hari dalam suhu ruang serta masihmenunjukkan nilai grade A dan cemaran mikroba masih dibawah Standar Nasional Indonesia (SNI).Kata kunci: ayam Lohman Brown, Haugh Unit, kualitas telur, penyimpanan, telur ayam kampong

The technology of coconut sugar making in the area of research is still elementary. To increase the selling price of coconut sugar, needed product diversification, and packaging of processed coconut sugar. The target of a program is KWT Al Cholihah and KWT Al Fatah at District of Dungkek. One of processed coconut sugar offered in this program is the product of brown sugar. Packaging provided in this program is a plastic pouch packaging with the label image so that it can increase the shelf life and consumer appeal. Through the program science and technology to the Community on KWT Al Cholihah and KWT Al Fatah at District of Dungkek, the outcomes expected are as follows: (1) skilled members of KWT in the manufacture of brown sugar in attractive packaging, (2) Products is a product produced in brown sugar and coconut sugar in beautiful packaging and (3) increase in sales of coconut sugar and brown sugar. Based on the results of the implementation, the response of KWT members is apresiasif and positive. Positive response is seen from the desire of members to resume the manufacture of brown sugar for the domestic industry. After the members of the training, the participants are motivated to produce and begin to be marketed in the neighborhood. Results of print in packaging sugar production and brown sugar are now sold in some modern stores in Sumenep like Alfamart and outside of Sumenep.

This service aims to help provide community understanding to increase brown sugar productivity in Sungai Raya Village, Batang Tuaka District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau, to be more productive so that it can be competitive. This service is carried out through socialization and training. This socialization and training use mentoring, discussion, workshops, and interview methods. This service begins with identifying outreach and training that can increase the productivity and competitiveness of brown sugar. Socialization and training that can increase productivity and competitiveness are packaging design training, socialization of production factors, socialization of marketing strategies, and socialization of financial reporting. It is hoped that this socialization and training will include design training to increase purchasing power, socialization of production factors to provide an understanding of optimizing brown sugar production, socialization of marketing strategies to provide an understanding of strategies to increase income and sales, socialization of financial reporting design to provide an understanding of the importance of financial reporting. The training results were very positive because the participants felt that the socialization and training materials were beneficial and helped provide an understanding of improving the economy of the brown sugar business for artisans in the village.

Abstract:
Lignin is an organic polymer compound that is difficult to degrade in the environment because of its very complex structure consisting of an aromatic ring group and three carbons in the side chain. This exploratory study aims to determine whether white rot fungi isolated from wastewater from eucalypt pulp and weathered wood are lignolytic and the ability of the isolates to degrade tannins as an approach in the lignin degradation process. The experimental design is divided into two stages, namely: 1) Isolation of fungi that have the ability to degrade tannins quantitatively and qualitatively as well as characterization of fungi morphologically (macroscopic and microscopic). 2) Testing the ability of superior white rot fungus isolates in degrading tannins at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2% of tannins. The brown zone formed in white rot fungal isolates was measured the zone diameter and intensity of the brown color. The results of this study indicate that of the 29 isolates obtained, there were five superior isolates capable of degrading tannins, namely isolates LD06, LD07, BE01.3, BE01.4 and BE02.2. BE01.3 was isolated at 2% tannin concentration, the second largest diameter of the brown zone after LD06 isolate and the highest brown color intensity level three with a slightly dark brown color intensity, namely slightly blackish brown.

This essay investigates the characteristics of Robert Langdon and his female helpers in Dan Brown’s novels Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The Lost symbol and Inferno.  In each of these novels, the quests are always solved by a male-female team. This essay is therefore going to focus on the character of Robert Langdon and his female helpers with the perspective of the Monomyth by Joseph Campbell. The protagonist Robert Langdon is a Harvard University professor specialised in religious iconology and symbology, but in these four novels he is thrown into breath-taking adventures with dangerous situations, however, with the help of several females he always manages to survive. The aim of this essay is to show how Langdon and his female helpers have the characteristics of a contemporary hero and helper, with the perspective of Campbell’s the Monomyth. Abstract:
The MA paper focuses on the problem of the genre of Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code. In the paper various concepts of the literary genre, especially the novel, in modern literary theory are presented and reviewed. All theories of the novel distinguish the following main genre constituents: plot, setting, character, thematic range, the narrator and point of view, intertextuality, and others. The analysis reveals that there are four subplots, apart from the main plot line; at some crucial moments, or in most dramatic scenes, the plotlines crisscross or merge. Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu are the protagonists of the novel; the Teacher-Teabing and Silas are the villains; and the minor characters are: Bezu Fache, Bishop Aringarosa, and others. The protagonists and the villains are psychological characters. The novel deals with a number of problems: love and family – the main problem is Christ’s marriage of Mary Magdalene and their posterity; the problem has been supposedly hidden in Leonardo da Vinci’s works, especially the fresco “The Last Supper”; the theme of art, the conflict between science and religion, etc. The research discovers that there is a fusion of several generic forms in The Da Vinci Code. It also shows that the novel can be placed in traditional and most recent literary culture.<br>Šis Deno Brauno romanas gali būti priskirtas daugiau nei vienam šiuolaikinės populiarios literatūros žanrui. Žanro teorijų apžvalga parodė, kad pati literatūrinio žanro sąvoka yra neryškiai apibrėžta, tačiau visos teorijos identifikuoja kelis žanrą formuojančius elementus – siužeto struktūra, veiksmo vieta ir laikas, charakteriai, plėtojamos temos (problemos), intertekstualumas ir kiti. Deno Brauno Da Vinčio kodas turi keleto klasikinės ir šiuolaikinės populiarios literatūros žanrų bruožų ir pilnai arba iš dalies atitinka tų žanrų reikalavimus. Siužeto analizė parodė, kad romanas parašytas pagal tradicinio detektyvo, arba trilerio schemą: romanas prasideda nuo žmogžudystės po kurios seka nužudytojo kuratoriaus mįslių išnarpliojimas ir tikrų nusikaltelių nubaudimas. Charakterių analizė atskleidė klasikinio detektyvo charakterių sistemą: kelios aukos, žudikas-įrankis, nusikaltimų organizatorius, detektyvai, policija. Nuolat pakartojama mintis apie Jėzaus Kristaus ir Marijos Magdalietės santuoką, bei romantiški romano herojų Roberto ir Sofi jausmai vienas kitam suteikia Da Vinčio kodui meilės romano žanro bruožų. Valdžios troškimo tema atskleista per vyskupo Aringarosos ir paslaptingojo Mokytojo charakterius, suteikia romanui trilerio bruožų ir paslaptingumo. Meno tema ir mįslės susijusios su Leonardo da Vinčio kūriniais, o taip pat aiškinami simboliai ir minimos slaptos draugijos suteikia romanui detektyvo, simbologinės ir sąmokslo literatūros bruožų. Abstract:
This essay investigates why the Myth of the Holy Grail continue to occur within popular culture. Myths, tales and legends from ancient times have inspired authors throughout the centuries. The readers are not only served with a spectacular adventure, but the myths also contain messages with a moral and ethical guidance for us as beholders. This particular myth can be found within different media in our time and the essay will attempt to give some answers as to why the myth reappears in new forms over and over again. An analysis is performed by using the methodology of aesthetic reception within reception theory. The material chosen for the analysis is the work of art; The Da Vinci Code by author Dan Brown, where two different media forms will be represented, the novel and the film. The findings in the analysis revealed that the key to understanding the reasons for the occurrence of this medieval myth is the element of a quest that is present within the myth. This ingredient, where you embark on an adventure, will create feelings of excitement for the beholder. A second aspect found is that we as humans have an interest in our history. Therefore, myths and legends from our historical past will be naturally alluring for beholders and especially if they are linked to philosophical questions and ideas that can be applied to our modern society. The success that has followed The Da Vinci Code has its explanation in the fact that Brown has managed to make the myth of the Holy Grail more contemporary, the myth has then been rejuvenated. A suggestion for further research is to perform a study on beholders in focus group interviews in order to validate the findings in the analysis.

De nos jours, les avatars et les réécritures du mythe du Graal puisent leur source d'inspiration dans la Littérature puisque la première mention littéraire de ce schème apparaît à la fin du XIIeme siècle dans Perceval ou le conte du Graal de Chrétien de Troyes. De par des origines ambivalentes (païennes et chrétiennes), le Graal s'est ancré dans l'imaginaire collectif comme un mythe rédempteur ou tout du moins, étant un idéal à atteindre. Si la quête médiévale chevaleresque demande une rigueur incomparable et une pureté d'âme et de corps pour mériter la révélation des mystères du Saint Calice aujourd'hui, les héros de la littérature populaire et de la culture de masse accèdent à ses secrets par le vecteur d'en-quêtes simplifiées. La dévaluation du mythe s'effectue à mesure des transferts qui s'opèrent dans différents genres, supports et médias mais également dans la réception que la société a du mythe du Graal. De Saint Graal à Graal, de Littérature à paralittérature, de la Bible à la télévision, ce travail cherche à mettre en évidence les différents aspects de ces transferts et tente de prouver qu'il existe des résonances et des points d'articulation entre ces domaines par l'interface du Graal. Dans ce sens, le motif sert aussi de porte-à-faux à une culture et à une littérature dites " mineures " qui peuvent toutefois, sous l'effet du Graal, devenir scientifiques et apporter de nouvelles pistes de réflexion sur le mythe, la société et la Littérature.

Abstract:
Kritiken och verkligheten söker utröna skillnader datorspelskritik och litteraturkritik emellan. Mina tankar rörande de två områdena kretsade till en början kring att litteraturkritiken tilläts röra sig mer fritt mellan olika kulturella sfärer medan datorspelskritiken mer hängav sig åt en yngre målgrupp utan referenser till andra kulturyttringar.   För att undersöka detta har jag gjort en diskuskursanalytisk undersökning efter van Dijks modell. Undersökningen inkluderar tolv analysenheter; tre böcker och tre spel. Varje verk har analyserats två gånger då jag analyserat recensioner från två olika tidningar (DN och SvD) för att komma än djupare i mina analyser kring hur aktuella böcker och spel behandlats. För att få spelen och böckerna något sånär jämförbara har jag ställt upp ett antal kriterier, där ett av de mer centrala är att samtliga verk har varit ett av de mest sålda verken ett givet år (2007-2009). Det är alltså "storsäljare" jag tittar på, i hopp om att de representerar de mest populära verken inom sitt fält.   För att göra denna undersökning och göra dessa jämförelser har jag utgått från Pierre Bourdieus begrepp "sociala fält" för att kunna bedöma när en recension lämnar sitt eget fält och äntrar ett annat. Detta begrepp är flexibelt så till vida att litteratur exempelvis kan anses vara ett fält, medan en nedskalning kan innebära att svensk feministlitteratur är ett annat, "mindre" fält. För att ytterligare närma mig kritikens, recensionens och värderingens värld har jag använt mig av Tomas Forser redogörelser och forskning kring vad dessa begrepp innebär. Jag har plockat ut ett antal, för uppsatsen, intressanta termer ur hans forskning för att konkretisera vissa delar av min teoretiska ram. Mina föreställningar om att litteraturartiklarna skulle inkludera långt fler referenser till andra sociala fält stämde inte helt och hållet, då vissa datorspelsartiklar var fullproppade med desamma. Däremot kom jag fram till att samtliga böcker anses säga något om verkligheten eller samhället, medan datorspelen aldrig antogs göra det.

À partir de l’analyse d’un album très contemporain, Into the Forest d’Anthony Browne (2004), on se propose d’explorer en détail les multiples images qui se trouvent derrière celles de l’illustrateur anglais. Derrière ce qui pourrait sembler à première vue un mashup de contes parmi d’autres (Le Petit Chaperon rouge, Hansel et Gretel…), on peut en effet voir dans cet ouvrage d’une part l’aboutissement des recherches d’une grande partie de la carrière de l’artiste autour du motif de la forêt des contes (Hansel and Gretel illustré dès 1981, puis The Tunnel en 1989), et d’autre part une réflexion artistique sur la tradition iconographique en rapport avec ce motif : Kay Nielsen, Walter Crane, Gustave Doré, etc. En explorant le lieu commun de la forêt des contes, on tente ainsi de mettre en évidence ses racines iconographiques et textuelles, et de détailler le plus rigoureusement possible le cheminement historique et esthétique ayant pris place entre la « forêt des contes » de l’époque de Perrault et la nôtre. Ceci afin de mettre en évidence que ce cliché aujourd’hui très fécond n’existe pas de toute éternité, mais est une construction culturelle soumise à une évolution historique.

Studi kasus ini dilakukan di CV Makmur Jaya Lumajang. Studi kasus ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kelayakan usaha pada CV Makmur Jaya Lumajang ditinjau dari segi analisis finansial. Studi ini dilaksanakan pada tanggal 10 Agustus sampai dengan 13 September 2020 di peternakan ayam ras petelur CV Makmur Jaya Lumajang. Pada studi kasus menggunakan bahan yaitu ayam ras petelur strain Hysex Brown sebanyak 30.000 ekor. Parameter pengamatan menggunakan analisis penerimaan atas biaya, dan analisis titik impas. Hasil pengamatan ini menunjukkan bahwa hasil penerimaan sebesar Rp9.223.780.000,00 dan angka pendapatan sebesar Rp1.603.955.000,00. Sehingga dengan hasil tersebut dapat menentukan analisis penerimaan atas biaya 1,210. Hasil pada analisis BEP harga memperoleh hasil Rp14.615,845 dan pada BEP produksi 448.225 kg. Dengan demikian peternakan ayam ras petelur CV Makmur Jaya Lumajang usahanya memperoleh keuntungan dan layak untuk dijalankan.

Errors of alignment cause the shift of the bearing contact and transmission errors. Abstract:
Monilinia fructicola causes brown rot blossom blight and fruit rot in stone fruits. Immature fruit are highly resistant to brown rot but can become infected. These infections typically remain superficial and quiescent until they become active upon maturation of the fruit. High levels of chlorogenic acid (CGA) and related compounds occur in the peel of immature fruit but these levels decline during ripening. CGA inhibits cutinase expression, a putative virulence factor, with little or no effect on spore germination or hyphal growth. To better understand the regulation of cutinase expression by fruit phenolics, we examined the effect of CGA, caffeic acid (CA) and related compounds on the redox potential of the growth medium and intracellular glutathione (GSH) levels. The presence of CA in the medium initially lowered the electrochemical redox potential of the medium, increased GSH levels and inhibited cutinase expression. Conidia germinated in the presence of CA, CGA, or GSH produced fewer appressoria and had elongated germ tubes compared to the controls. These results suggest that host redox compounds can regulate fungal infectivity. In order to genetically manipulate this fungus, a transformation system using Agrobacterium was developed. The binary transformation vector, pPTGFPH, was constructed from the plasmid pCT74, carrying green fluorescent protein (GFP) driven by the ToxA promoter of Pyrenophora tritici-repentis and hygromycin B phosphotransferase (hph) under control of the trpC promoter of from Aspergillus nidulans, and the binary vector pCB403.2, carrying neomycin phosphotransferase (nptII) between the T-DNA borders. Macroconidia of M. fructicola were coincubated with A. tumefaciens strain LBA 4404(pPTGFPH) on media containing acetosyringone for two days. Hygromycin- and G418-resistant M. fructicola transformants were selected while inhibiting A. tumefaciens with cefotaxime. Transformants expressing GFP fluoresced brightly, and were formed with high efficiency and frequency of T-DNA integration frequency. The use of these transformants for in situ studies on stone fruit tissues is discussed.

This paper traces the origins of today’s campaigns for school vouchers and other modes of public funding for private education to efforts by Milton Friedman beginning in 1955. It reveals that the endgame of the “school choice” enterprise for libertarians was not then—and is not now--to enhance education for all children; it was a strategy, ultimately, to offload the full cost of schooling onto parents as part of a larger quest to privatize public services and resources. Based on extensive original archival research, this paper shows how Friedman’s case for vouchers to promote “educational freedom” buttressed the case of Southern advocates of the policy of massive resistance to Brown v. Board of Education. His approach—supported by many other Mont Pelerin Society members and leading libertarians of the day --taught white supremacists a more sophisticated, and for more than a decade, court-proof way to preserve Jim Crow. All they had to do was cease overt focus on race and instead deploy a neoliberal language of personal liberty, government failure and the need for market competition in the provision of public education.

Because of the great value of cordyceps (Ophiocordyceps sinensis, syn. Cordyceps sinensis), its rarity in the wild, and the difficulty of cultivating it, adulteration and substitution frequently occurs. The authenticity of any cordyceps raw material or finished product to be used in dietary or food supplements, or in products falling into another regulatory category, should be determined, if appropriate, by both DNA and chemical analysis. This is the case even when the mycelium is grown on nutritive substrates such as brown rice (Oryza sativa, Poaceae) and the species and strain of the fungal culture used as inoculum is confirmed, because other contaminating fungal species have been observed growing out preferentially over the intended species. Traditional Chinese medical practitioners and consumers familiar with the material known by the Chinese dong chong xiao cao (冬虫夏草) may continue to judge identity and quality morphologically but with the understanding that due to its expense, it is a highly adulterated material. This bulletin provides a summary on issues regarding the adulteration of products labeled to contain cordyceps for the herbal products industry, and those with interest in the quality of cordyceps in general. In addition to data on adulteration, the bulletin contains information about the taxonomy, importance in the market, analytical methods to detect adulteration, and consequences for the consumer and the industry.

Une série de vignettes illustre et décrit une série d'habitats benthiques dans le golfe du Maine. Les habitats benthiques actuels sont l'héritage de l'histoire géologique de la région de l'ère mésozoïque (il y a 252 à 66 millions d'années) à l'ère cénozoïque (il y a 66 millions d'années à aujourd'hui). La plate-forme de marge continentale peu profonde abritant le golfe du Maine s'est formée lors de l'ouverture de l'océan Atlantique Nord par le rifting des plaques nord-américaine et africaine au niveau d'un centre d'expansion au cours de l'ère mésozoïque. Des roches sédimentaires non marines et marines se sont déposées sur la nouvelle marge continentale. Au cours de l'ère cénozoïque, une série de transgressions et de régressions du niveau de la mer, associées à de multiples avancées et retraits des calottes glaciaires continentales nord-américaines, se sont accompagnées de dépôts et d'érosions de sédiments et de substrat rocheux sous-jacent. Certains de ces événements d’érosion ont été profonds et se reflètent aujourd’hui dans la géomorphologie à grande échelle de la région. Au cours du dernier maximum glaciaire (il y a environ 24 à 20 14 000 ans) de l'époque du Pléistocène (il y a 2,58 millions à 11 700 ans), la marge sud-est de l'inlandsis laurentidien (LIS) occupait le golfe du Maine. La cartographie de la géomorphologie sous-marine fournit la preuve qu'un courant de glace marine à écoulement rapide occupait le golfe. La LIS s'est retirée vers le nord par étapes. Des sédiments superficiels se sont déposés dans le golfe pendant et après la glaciation. La géomorphologie glaciaire en vue en plan est interprétée à partir de la bathymétrie sonar multifaisceaux haute résolution définie dans des données bathymétriques à l'échelle régionale. L'interprétation des profils de sismique réflexion fournit la structure transversale des caractéristiques glaciaires et les modèles de sédimentation dans le golfe du Maine. Les bassins du golfe présentent des dépôts épais (des dizaines de mètres) de sédiments glaciaires et post-glaciaires à grains fins. Les crêtes séparant les bassins sont dominées par des dépôts à grains filants (till) et ces crêtes constituent une série de moraines de récession majeures. Au cours de l'époque de l'Holocène (il y a 11,7 mille ans jusqu'à aujourd'hui), l'interaction de l'élévation du niveau de la mer avec le rebond post-glaciaire de la croûte a entraîné une exposition subaérienne, pendant un certain temps, des bancs Georges et Browns, limitant ainsi le golfe du Maine de l'Atlantique. Océan. L'interprétation de la bathymétrie du sonar multifaisceau met en évidence une érosion fluviale sur les berges durant cette période. Les inondations ultérieures se sont accompagnées du développement de vastes champs de vagues de sable formés sous le régime actuel des courants.

In 2007 the National Park Service (NPS) Southeast Coast Network (SECN) began collecting water-quality data in the estuarine waters of Canaveral National Seashore as part the NPS Vital Signs monitoring program. The scope of the monitoring program includes Mosquito Lagoon and is comprised of continuous water-quality monitoring conducted by the SECN at one site and is augmented with monthly data collected at five stations by St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD). The continuous-monitoring data station is located at the Canaveral National Seashore visitor center dock and collects pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity, turbidity and water-level data every 30 minutes. The five stations located throughout Mosquito Lagoon are sampled by Volusia County for the SJRWMD as part of the District’s Indian River Lagoon Water-Quality Monitoring Network; data at these five stations include monthly measurements of water-clarity conditions, nutrients, and chlorophyll a levels. Both the SECN and the SJRWMD programs use methods adapted from, or compatible with, the water-quality monitoring program established by the National Estuarine Research Reserve Program. The Canaveral National Seashore fixed-station water-quality monitoring site is part of the SECN estuarine water- and sediment-quality monitoring efforts, which routinely collects data in the vicinity of seven park units along the southeastern U.S. coast. Information collected by this monitoring program will be used to help managers make better-informed decisions by understanding trends and variability related to water-quality conditions in park waters. A summary of 2012 data is presented below. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) was mostly good throughout the year, with a few fair readings occurring most commonly in June. Three of the five sites had a fair reading for dissolved inorganic phosphorous (DIP) in November. DIP for the remaining sites, and the rest of the year, was rated as good. There were no poor readings for DIN or DIP at any of the sites throughout the year. Some values for DIN and DIP were below the detection limit of the laboratory instrumentation. Chlorophyll a readings were widely variable throughout the year and throughout Mosquito Lagoon. There were 17 good, 17 fair, and 20 poor readings. A majority of the poor readings occurred in the summer and early autumn months. Water clarity conditions ranged from poor to good across most sites with a majority of the poor observations occurring during late summer and fall. Poor and fair water clarity conditions tended to occur during periods with elevated chlorophyll a levels. Mean daily turbidity readings at the continuous recording station were less than 18 NTUs. Salinity ranged from 31.03 to 45.41 parts per thousand (ppt) with the higher values occurring during the spring months. Monthly averages ranged from 35.1 ppt in September to 41.5 ppt in April. pH values ranged between 7.53 and 8.74 throughout the year with monthly averages ranging from 7.8 in September to 8.2 in January, April and November. Dissolved oxygen concentrations measured during monthly sampling were rated good at all sites throughout the year except at two stations in October. Although continuous data indicated a period between April and October when mean daily values commonly dropped below 5 mg/L (fair), with one daily average below 2 mg/L (poor) in September. Approximately 24% of data collected in 2012 were excluded from reporting because it was considered anomalous. Most anomalous data occurred between June 28 and September 11 due to unknown sonde malfunctions. Short periods of missing data in April and August were due to sonde mount replacement. Data collected at the fixed station as well as discrete nutrient data from SJRWMD are consistent with the ideal growing conditions for brown tide, which was observed between July and September 2012.

Abstract:
The Cascades frog (Rana cascadae) is one of two frog species known to occur historically in Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO) in Northern California. However, no Cascades frogs have been documented in LAVO for several decades, despite repeated surveys. Threats to the species include natural predators, introduction of fish into historically fishless habitats, diseases like fungal pathogens, airborne drift of pesticides from nearby agricultural areas, ultraviolet (UV-B) radiation, wildfires, and habitat loss from human development and climate change. Objectives of this project were to conduct surveys for Cascades frogs at LAVO using both visual encounter surveys (VES) and environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys at locations with potential for reintroduction, conduct VES and eDNA surveys for potential predators (rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout, and leeches) to determine locations unsuitable for reintroduction, and to develop a suitability model to assess reintroduction potential within LAVO for Cascades frogs. Fifty locations around LAVO were sampled during this study. Suitability for Cascades frogs was ranked according to suitable vegetation availability, elevation, climatic factors, and perennial water availability. Projected climate data was used to derive future climate suitability for Cascades frogs within and around LAVO. No Cascades frog egg masses, larvae, or adults were detected during VES or eDNA sampling within LAVO in 2021. Pacific tree frogs were observed at 18 sites, indicating suitable larval frog habitat at these sites. At 12 of these 18 sites, trout were not detected with either VES or eDNA sampling and leeches were only detected in two locations. The eDNA survey did not appear to be an effective way to detect leeches, but this method was effective for trout species and Cascades frogs. Climate, vegetation, elevation, and perennial water availability were summarized and combined to identify suitable locations within and around LAVO. Climate data for known locations of Cascades frogs in California were used to define a range of suitable climate conditions for the species and then extrapolated across the Cascade frog?s range in California. Within LAVO, occurrence data were not available and, thus, known habitat preferences were combined with spatial data to establish the location and density of suitable vegetation communities and the availability of perennial water. The most suitable areas within the park were identified to occur along the outer boundary and eastern side of the Park. These locations had optimal climate conditions, suitable vegetation communities and available perennial water sources. Many of the areas with high suitability in LAVO were impacted in recent burns (2021), which will reduce their current overall suitability until the vegetation recovers. Projected climate scenarios suggest that, in general, areas surrounding LAVO will decline in temperature suitability while areas within LAVO will increase. Using all available information, sites (based on sub-watersheds) were determined to be of high, medium, or low reintroduction potential. Sites of high reproduction potential included the Cluster Lakes area; Feather Lake and nearby pond; Horseshoe Lake, Snag Lake and Grassy Creek, and vernal pool near Snag Lake trail; and Willow Lake. All the sites with high reproduction potential will require active management to prepare them for Cascades frogs and to maintain them as suitable habitat into the future.
