Este artigo apresenta uma pesquisa sobre os Cucumbis Carnavalescos. Esses grupos alcançaram a sua maior notoriedade na segunda metade da década de 1880, aparecendo cada vez mais nos jornais e conquistando seu espaço nas ruas durante os dias de carnaval. Eles foram reconhecidos, por jornalistas e outros observadores contemporâneos, como "africanos" - "danças africanas", "instrumentos africanos" e "trajes africanos" - desfilando pelas ruas da cidade. Abstract:
New Orleans at year ten was a black majority town with slave labor. The 1724 Code Noir aligned Louisiana slave law to that of the French Caribbean colonies. Slave owners pragmatically let Africans carry weapons, hire out for jobs, farm, hunt, fish, and sell the products of their labor. Africans traded goods at a growing African marketplace, and gathered to resurrect the burial choreographies and ceremonial dances of their mother culture. The Bamana belief in the transmigration of souls was a powerful sense of cultural continuity. In 1743, when Bienville departed, the town had survived financial convulsions, floods, food shortages, a slave revolt, Indian tensions, maroons—fugitive slaves—and smugglers in a black market. After Spain assumed control of New Orleans in 1765, Code Noir transitioned to Spanish slave law, giving slaves more rights. By 1781, the maroon village Ville Gaillard was a significant force led by the fugitive Creole Juan Maló. After many conflicts with the authorities, Maló was captured and executed on June 12, 1784. St. Maló’s resistance burrowed into the memory of African Americans, his legacy influenced by funeral dances and voodoo, his memory preserved through oral culture, and his impact still felt to this day.

African dance has become a distinct genre that traces its lineage across a worldwide Diaspora to the dances of Africa. Thereby, African dances are found on six of seven continents: Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America; however, our concern here is the “American African Diaspora,” which ultimately extends from Canada to Chile, the Caribbean to the Hawaiian Islands. Abstract:
Chapter 3 pursues the thesis that commodity and gift forms of exchange are interconnected and inseparable. It does this through an examination of three case studies: hip-hop, private dance studio instruction, and powwow. The recent histories of these three examples is examined alongside some of their antecedents at the beginning of the twentieth century. Hip-hop is located along a continuum with the early twentieth-century African American social dances that fueled a dance craze taking place in the urban United States. Private studio instruction is traced back to the social and modern dance instruction offered by entrepreneurial teachers who codified and sold those dances. Powwows are connected to the Wild West shows and other exhibitions of Native dances that brought Native peoples into greater contact with one another and with white audiences. Analyzing the development of these dance practices over time enables a more focused inquiry into the values and belief systems that infuse dance in a given historical moment and the ways that these connect to larger systems of shared values. Each example also calls attention to the way that commodification yields values that collude with forms of social and political domination including racialization and racist ideologies, Orientalism and exoticism, and colonial settler logics.

In early modern Spain, raza (race) signified the stain of Blackness, while casta (chaste, caste) signified purity of blood—Whiteness. But with its empire in decline, eighteenth-century Spain enacted its dreams of sovereignty and autonomy by impersonating a dark Other, whose Semitic and south-Saharan African antecedents were now wrapped within an imaginary Gitano. Majismo, emulating the fashions of the urban underclass, adopted the fandango, an American dance of slaves and outlaws, as an emblem of pure-blooded Spanishness. Adopting fandango dances such as the profane Mexican panaderos, an Africanist belly-to-belly dance incorporated into the bolero school repertoire, majismo figured the deeply political dissonance between the determinism of Christian blood purity and the possibility of redemption implicit in the bobo’s equivocal confusion. Ironically, the fandango was adopted throughout the Western world as a symbol of freedom and class mobility, a metaphor that soon inflected every aspect of the world’s perception of Spain.

Saarikoski (Finland) bases the core of her article on ethnological archive material produced in the course of an inquiry in 1991 about the dancing on so-called pavilions or at outdoor dancing venues in the middle of the twentieth century. Accounts of the post-World-War-II period predominate, and Saarikoski finds nostalgia to be the primary attitude displayed as elderly people look back on their youth and happy memories of dancing. The dance repertoire was a mix of round dances and African-American-derived dances, and the distinction between the styles did not seem to be important to the dancers.

This chapter examines three works by Danish artist Jeannette Ehlers that involve dance as ritual movement in what I call“museumised space”. Examining these dances as creolised products arising from the enslavement of Africans by European nations, I will argue that Ehlers performs through them an Afropean decolonial praxis of ‘re-edification’ around the silences surrounding Denmark’s colonial past, involving in particular a dialectic between spectrality and material sumptuousness that draws purposely on dance in relation to the materiality of sound.

Le développement des technologies de la reproduction, et notamment de la fécondation in vitro (FIV), permet aujourd’hui à certains couples (hétérosexuels) infertiles africains d’avoir un enfant. L’offre d’assistance médicale à la procréation (AMP) s’inscrit dans un système de soins libéral qui s’adresse prioritairement aux classes moyennes et urbaines. Certains couples ne trouvent pas dans leur pays les conditions ou les techniques recherchées et sont amenés à se déplacer à leurs frais dans des pays limitrophes ou encore en Europe ou aux États-Unis. D’autres couples résident en France où l’AMP est encadrée par les lois de bioéthique. Ce chapitre montre comment l’espace mondialisé de la reproduction renvoie à un rapport inégalitaire aux biotechnologies de la reproduction des couples africains infertiles selon leurs conditions socio-économiques, mais aussi selon leur lieu de résidence. Ce contexte renvoie au cadre théorique de la « reproduction stratifiée ».
