Abstract:

Abstract:
This study was undertaken to characterize the oxygen consumption and heart rate responses of subjects during laboratory simulated aerobic dance circuit training sessions. Sixteen female subjects performed six randomly assigned 30-minute aerobic dance circuit training protocols. Oxygen consumption and heart rate responses were monitored in response to changes in three independent variables which were: interval duration, leg involvement and fitness level. Results revealed that the different interval durations generated significantly different oxygen costs. Also, it was found that in relative terms (% of max VO$ sb2$), the low fitness group (max VO$ sb2 $ 45 ml/kg.min). Furthermore, it was found that the involvement of deep knee bends during the resistance training segment of the circuit significantly increased the oxygen cost when the resistance training segments were compared. Finally, the results showed that exercise intensity was overestimated when using percentage of max HR.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe the instructional skills demonstrated by 29 aerobic dance-exercise instructors as identified through the Aerobic Dance Observation System (ADOS). A secondary purpose was to describe the instructional skills across demographic and contextual variables such as years of teaching experience, certification, age, gender, facility, and equipment. Twenty-nine aerobic dance-exercise instructors (Male = 5; Female = 24) were observed in a variety of facilities: recreational programs, educational institutions, health clubs and aerobic dance-exercise studios. Each facility had different features and equipment such as floor type (hardwood, concrete or padded), portable or built-in sound system, mirrors and microphones. The exercise classes consisted of low-impact, high-impact, or step classes that varied from 50 to 90 minutes in length. Class sizes ranged from 4 to 150 individuals from all levels of fitness. Data were collected using three different methods: demographic questionnaire, on-site data analysis (Tech Checks and the physical location of the instructor) and videotaped analysis (instructional cues, nonverbal cues, general/specific feedback and choreographed movement patterns). Through descriptive statistical analysis, a profile of the instructional skills used in aerobic dance-exercise teaching environment was compiled. The findings from this study indicate that overall the aerobic dance exercise instructors demonstrated more similarities than differences in their patterns of teaching across demographic and contextual variables. The instructional profile describes instructors leading from the front of the room providing limited instructional information.

Abstract:
The effectiveness of nutrition education on the nutrition knowledge of future aerobic instructors was studied. Forty-seven subjects participated in the study. The experimental group (n=31) chose to and paid for a two-hour per week session of structured nutrition education for four weeks, the control group (n=16) did not. A nutrition knowledge test was completed by all subjects before and after the intervention. Results were analyzed for relationships between subject's nutrition knowledge and age, gender, educational background, income, and body mass index. No significant differences were found between the groups. The results showed that prior to any formal nutrition education, fitness instructors in the experimental and control groups had low nutrition knowledge (8.06%±16.4% and 4.38%±4.12%, respectively). Post-intervention nutrition knowledge significantly improved (p

Angioi, Manuela. "Evaluation of physical fitness in relation to performance and injury severity in contemporary dance." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/110013.

Abstract:
Dance has attracted little scientific interest on the effects of physical fitness improvements on performance and injury severity, particularly with respect to contemporary dance. The main aims of the current work were: a) to observe the physical demands of dance performance; b) to develop a reliable dance-specific performance tool; c) to assess the association between selected physical fitness parameters and performance in contemporary dance by using a new reliable method (AC test); d) to assess selected physical fitness parameters in relation to injury severity in contemporary dance; e) to study the effects of increased fitness parameters on performance through a randomized controlled trial. A total of 50 performances, performed by 20 dancers, were monitored by using a portable accelerometers (SWA armbands) and heart rate monitors while 45 performances in DVDs were video analysed. Six dancers and two dance teachers were recruited to test a newly developed performance tool. A sample made of 41 dancers were recruited and assessed for aerobic fitness (DAFT), lower body muscular power (jump height test), upper body muscular endurance (press-ups test), flexibility (active and passive hip ROM), body composition (skinfolds), performance (n=17) and injury severity (n=16). In order to investigate the effects of the supplementary fitness training on performance, 24 of the total 41 dancers, were randomly assigned to either an intervention (n=12) or control (n=12) group. The intervention group undertook a specifically designed exercise-training programme (circuit and WBV training) lasting six weeks. Both groups were re-tested for physical fitness levels and performance at the end of the intervention period. Results revealed that performance intensities varied from light to moderate while these were observed with the use of pliés and jumps as well as lifting other dancers. Based on the seven most frequently used criteria by selected pre-professional contemporary dance institutions and companies, a novel performance tool (AC tool) was developed with an inter-rater reliability of r=0.96. There was a significant correlation between aesthetic competence (AC) scores and jump ability (r=0.55) and press-ups (r=0.55), respectively. Stepwise backward multiple regression analysis revealed that the best predictor of AC was press-ups (R2=0.30, p=0.03, 95% confidence intervals=0.11–1.34). Univariate analyses also revealed that the interaction of press-ups and jump ability improved the prediction power of AC (R2=0.44, p=0.004, 95% confidence intervals=0.009–0.04). Pearson’s correlation coefficients detected significant negative correlations between the mean score recorded for injury severity (expressed as TDO) and lower body muscular power (r=-0.66; p=0.014); backward regression analysis also revealed that, from all studied parameters, the strongest predictor of TDO was lower body muscular power (p=0.014). For the intervention group repeated measures ANOVA revealed significant increases (pre vs. post) in aerobic fitness (p<0.05), lower body muscular power (p<0.05), upper body muscular endurance (p<0.05) and performance (p<0.05). Linear regression analyses indicated that the only significant predictor of AC was aerobic capacity (F=7.641; p=0.03); the interaction of press-ups and aerobic capacity (F=6.297; p=0.036), and lower body muscular power with aerobic capacity (F=5.543; p=0.05) demonstrated an improved prediction power. These results show that the observed contemporary dance performance is an intermittent type of activity of moderate intensity. Given the reliability of the AC tool, it is concluded that upper body muscular endurance and jump ability best predict AC of contemporary dancers. Reduced lower body muscular power is associated with increased severity of injuries. Finally, supplementary exercise training significantly increases lower body muscular power, upper body muscular endurance and aerobic fitness, which in turn are beneficial to improve AC of contemporary dancers.

Abstract This study focused on aerobic dance teachers, either graduated from dance department or not, to have a understanding of their psychological processes engaging in their career, their self-perception, dance identity, and motivation and performance in aerobic dance teaching. Research process consisted of focus group and individual interviews. A total of 9 aerobic dance teachers were interviewed. Data were analyzed by way of content analysis and analysts’ triangulation. It was found that dance department graduates had high levels of dance identity due to their dance training. Non-dance department graduates also had high levels of dance identity, but it had developed from their aerobic dance teaching. Interviews also developed various levels of aerobic dance teacher’s identity through the processes of social identity. Problem-solving and seeking social supports were the primary coping strategies. Interviewees with a higher level of aerobic dance teacher’s identity were more likely to stay longer in aerobic dance teaching. This study explored psychological experiences of dancers in aerobic dance teaching from a dancer’s point of view. From this study, I found that the major difference between dance and aerobic dance was the soul of the dancer. Where the soul of the dancer is, where dreams and realities are balanced.

This thesis is aimed at faculty and students in a university in the southern region of Taiwan, and the purpose of major is to understand the body composition including body weight, body fat, body mass index (BMI) and health behavioral self-efficacy, which includes four levels as nutrition, exercise, psychological comfort and health responsibility. Meanwhile, the author explored the effects of aerobic dance exercise on body composition and self-efficacy of healthy behavior. The method used in this study is Quasi-Experimental Design, which is based on 60 faculty members and are assigned to 30 experimental and control groups as their willingness. The experimental group received a total of six weeks, twice a week, one hour of aerobic dance, while the control group maintained normal routine. Both groups received measurements of body weight, body fat, and body mass index (BMI) before and after the experiment, and asked them to fill out the Health Behavior Self-Efficacy Questionnaire. The researchers have collected the questionnaire and conducted descriptive analysis, independent t-test, paired t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson product-moment correlation for the data of the participating members. The results of the data validation indicate that this single strategy, the intervention of the aerobic dance movement, has improved outcomes for university faculty and learners' body weight, body fat, and healthy behavioral self-efficacy. However, there is no significant difference in body mass index between the methods. The results of this study can be integrated as a reference for promoting health programs in related fields and can be compared to the benefits of a composite health promotion strategy to balance the optimal options needed to be selected in each field.

The thesis intends to examine agility and coordination of male basketball team in NTUA Municipal College after applying Hi-Low Impact Aerobic Dance to the training program. This study uses qualitative research method, inclusive of participant observation, data collection technique, interview method, questionnaire method, and induction. I find that Hi-Low Impact Aerobic Dance, especially High-Low Aerobic, can increase coordination and agility of the basketball players. High-Low Aerobic focuses on moving upper and lower limbs, through Cha Cha Dance, Slides, and Jab Steps. The upper-limb movement is a non-inertial but high intensity exercise, when gradually learned, is conducive to better performance of the basketball players in terms of coordination and agility, and can improve their cardiovascular function. For comparative analysis, I use Wilcoxon Singed Ranks Test, with a stress on the nonparametric test. I find the pre-test and post-test differ statistically on shuttle run, SEMO agility and coordination, for basketball players after High-Low Aerobic. Its benefit of enhancing agility and coordination is therefore evident.

The Influences of Aerobic Dance on Physical Self Concept, Self-Esteem of Female University Students and Testing Their Causal Model Abstract Three purposes of this study included to revise the PSDQ (Physical Self-Description Questionnaire), to investigate the influences of participation in a ten weeks aerobic dance session on physical self concept, self-esteem of female university students and to test causal model of physical self and self esteem. The enrolled PE course undergraduate students participated to examine the validity and reliability of PSDQ. The exploratory factor analysis demonstrated the nine components of PSDQ: sports competence, body fat, health, appearance, flexibility, coordination, physical activity, endurance and strength. Their Cronbach α index were from .85 to .95, retesting reliability were from .50 to .89. Confirmatory factor analysis provided the fitness indexes of PSDQ measurement model were acceptable. The female university students volunteered to participate in this study for investigating the influences of aerobic dance on physical self concept. The experimental group ( N=57, Mage= 20.53±1.98 ) participated twice aerobic dance sessions except for PE course per weeks. The control group (N=54, Mage= 19.65±.76) did not participate in any regular exercise program except for PE course. The PSDQ and health physical fitness were administered to participate before and after the ten week treatment for all participants and the experimental group completed PSDQ in middle of the treatment. The result explored participants in the experimental group improved much more in global physical self concept, physical activity, endurance and strength subscales of PSDQ and sit-and-reach of physical fitness than the control group. Used structural equation modeling to test the causal model between physical self concept and self esteem in before, middle and after treatment and to compare two competitive models. The result provided the top-down model was better in model-fit evaluation than other models and also had the horizontal effects cross before, middle, and after treatment on both self concept and self esteem. This research also suggests to future directions and applications in the issue about aerobic dance influence on physical self concept and self esteem.
