Abstract:
Abstract The mainstream fields of Polish dance research were defined in 1818–1847 by Józef Elsner, Kazimierz Brodziński, Łukasz Gołębiowski and Karol Czerniawski, who broadly characterized some elements of the dances considered as national (the polonaise, mazur, krakowiak and kozak). Oskar Kolberg knew very well the works of all these authors and referred to them many times. However, he was unique in his extensive documentation of dance melodies, information about their geographic origin, and local terminology. He also characterized the dances with regard to their sequence in the traditional context and described the dance technique in an instructive manner. Oskar Kolberg’s documentation for quite a long time remained outside the scope of mainstream research and publications about dance in Poland. In the 1930s Polish representatives of the newly defined field of ethnochoreology were the first to include examples from Kolberg in their works on the ritual dances, regional dances and characteristic dance behaviour types and forms. Kolberg’s works increased in popularity after the World War II. Today the materials left by Oskar Kolberg allow us to establish to a large extent the geographic range and perspective on the changes of dance repertoire, both with regard to choreographic technique and dance types, or a more detailed and critical perspective on the problems of folk terminology in dance phenomena. It may also serve as the point of departure for wider retrospective or comparative studies – which may not be very fashionable today, but which have never been adequately conducted in Poland.

Abstract:
Aim. This paper analyses the inherent paradoxes of Jewish-Polish relations. It portrays the main beliefs that construct the contradicting narratives of the Holocaust, trying to weigh which of them is closer to the historic truth. It seeks for an answer to the question whether the Polish people were brothers-in-fate, victimized like the Jews by the Nazis, or if they were rather a hostile ethnic group. Concept. First, the notion of Poland as a haven for Jews throughout history is conveyed. This historical review shows that the Polish people as a nation have always been most tolerant towards the Jews and that anti-Semitism has existed only on the margins of society. Next, the opposite account is brought, relying on literature that shows that one thousand years of Jewish residence in Poland were also a thousand years of constant friction, with continuous hatred towards the Jews. Consequently, different accounts of World War II are presented – one shows how the Polish people were the victims, and the others deal with Poles as by-standers and as perpetrators. Results and conclusion. Inconsistency remains the strongest consistency of the relations between Jews and Poles. With the unresolved puzzle of whether the Polish people were victims, bystanders or perpetrators, this paper concludes with some comments on Israeli domestic political and educational attitudes towards Poland, that eventually influence collective concepts. Cognitive value. The fact that the issue of the Israeli-Polish relationship has not been deeply inquired, seems to attest to the reluctance of both sides to deal with what seems to form an open wound. At the same time, the revival of Jewish culture in Poland shows that, today more than ever, the Polish people are reaching out to Israelis, and are willing to deal with history at an unprecedented level. As Israelis who wish to promote universal values, a significant encounter with the Polish people may constitute a door to acceptance and understanding of others. Such acceptance can only stem from mutual discourse and physical proximity between the two peoples.

Abstract:
The article addressed the issue of using folk dance as a tool of propaganda by the communist party. It is not uncommon to associate the activity of folk groups with the period of socialist realism and the years that followed in. Folk song and dance ensembles have always been a colorful showcase of the country outside of its borders and have often added splendor to distinguished national events with their performances. Nevertheless, their artistic activity was not motivated solely by the beauty of Polish folklore, for folk ensembles formed after World War II were often created to aid the goals of the communist party. Reaching for folk repertoire and transferring regional songs and dances to the stage was seen as opposition to the elite culture. Cultural reform made performances accessible to the working class, and folk song and dance expressed admiration for the work of people in the countryside. In addition to traditional songs from various regions of Poland, the repertoire of these ensembles also included many songs in honor of Stalin and about the Polish-Soviet friendship. Paweł Pawlikowski’s award-winning film, Cold War, which partially follows a song and dance ensemble (aptly named Mazurek), shows many of the dilemmas and controversies that the artists of this period had to face.

Abstract:
Since at least the fourteenth century the Slavic ethnic minority population known as Polish Lemkos has claimed the northern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains as its homeland. Lemkos are part of a larger east Slavic population of Carpathian Rus' collectively known as Rusyns, who reside in the Lemko region (in Poland), the Prešov region (in Slovakia), and western Subcarpathian Rus' (in Ukraine) (see Figure I). Beyond the Carpathian homeland Rusyns live in Serbia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and outside of Europe in the United States, Canada, and Australia (Magocsi 2005, 433; 2006, II). By the outset of the twentieth century in the Lemko Region, the term “Lemko” was gradually adopted as an ethnonym instead of “Rusyn.” Some Rusyns in lands other than Poland also choose to refer to themselves as Lemkos.

Abstract:
The article is concerned with life and creative path of P. Virskyi and the ensemble he leads in the context of cultural diplomacy. The author analyses that the aspiration to create realistic and folk plays by nature has influenced the artist in his exploring and further developing the folk dance. Therefore, applying the experience of folk talents, Virskyi was committed to create characters of Ukrainian stage dance, expanded and enriched its expressiveness. Pavlo Virskyi directed some choreographic performances already in the first days of his activity as choreographer, but his actual work on the formation of the Ukrainian stage dance started in 1936, particularly following successful performance of the outstanding theatrical play “Zaporozhets za Dunaiem” (Eng. A Zaporizhian (Cossack) Beyond the Danube). In 1937, Virskyi and Bolotov organized the first ever in Ukraine folk dance ensemble and quit Taras Shevchenko National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine, where they headed a ballet group. The choreographers involved in the ensemble skilled young people as well as a team of experienced ballet dancers, among whom was M. Ivashchenko − their old friend and companion, brilliant performer of folk dances. Later B. Tairov and I. Kurylov engaged in choreographic process. The ensemble captured people’s attention, successfully performing at the VI World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow in the summer of 1957. The group of youngsters of the ensemble attained the title of winners of the VI World Festival and was awarded gold medals and the first-place diploma (soloists V. Kotliar, L. Zastrozhnova, H. Chapkis, N. Birka, L. Sarafanov, B. Mokrov, V. Holyk). Artists of the dance ensemble of the Ukrainian SSR performed for the audience from many countries of the world: Poland, Czechoslovakia, China, Vietnam, Cuba, Angola, France, Austria, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela. All of the countries equally acknowledged the ensemble. The troupe performances abroad not only were a great success, but also sparked a massive political resonance. The national press continuously wrote about the unsurpassed art created by renowned Ukrainian choreographer P. Virskyi and his invaluable contribution to the development of Ukrainian folk dance choreography. V. Korniichuk, Honoured Journalist of Ukraine, author of the article “To pioneer of Ukrainian folk dance” noticed the festive concert dedicated to the 90-annivarsary of P. Virskyi’s birth. In his speech before the concert, Y. Stanishevskyi, Doctor of Arts, Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine, member of the International Academy of Dance, declared, “P. Virskyi is a distinguished master of choreography, director and pioneer of Ukrainian folk dance, who not only formed a unique dance group, but also glorified Ukraine on all continents by the high art.” Keywords: cultural diplomacy, Ukrainian folk dance, art, artistic view, Virskyi.

Abstract:
Aim: Verification of special and task-oriented fitness test of competitive ballroom dancers carried out among the most qualified contestants by Rokita (2006).Basic procedures: The research material consisted of 76 dancers (38 European couples) of the highest international dance class S, who train ballroom dance in European countries, i.e.: Poland, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Ukraine. The research methodology included carrying out a test constructed by Rokita (2006), consisting of a total of 16 “chaines” turns in 2/4 metre and at a rate of 40 bars per minute. Results: The presented results constitute a proof that the tool proposed by Rokita is not reliable for all competitive ballroom dancers. It is obvious that the most qualified male and female dancers show a higher level of physical fitness due to, for example, training. This however does not mean that there are no significant differences between them. Nevertheless, it is impossible to measure them using this test. Therefore, the conducted research led to considerations on the principles of construction of a motor skills test. Conclusions: The presented results constitute a proof that the tool proposed by Rokita is not reliable for all competitive ballroom dances. This test does not fully meet the criteria for the construction of a motor skills test.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper addresses the problem of the quality of life of elderly people by presenting the energy of Latinos that arouses optimism in European citizens and provides them with joy through Latin dances on a regular basis. The research covered 163 people in the old, so-called third, age, from the European countries with the highest aging rate, namely: Italy, Germany, Greece and Poland. Results shows that physical activity in the form of Latin American dances has a beneficial effect on the functioning of the body. Not only does it allow for maintaining physical fitness and inhibiting the development of many ailments and diseases, but also stimulates the brain to constant activity, which results in improvement of the ability to make associations, concentration and, above all, memory. It is also a way to fill the gap that arises as a consequence of the completion of certain life stages. Through making new social contacts, it is possible to forget about loneliness, stagnation and the monotony of everyday life. However, above all, Latin dance is a source of satisfaction, joy and happiness, i.e., determinants of the quality of life.

Abstract:
George Desnoyer first danced in London in 1721 and 1722, and returned to pursue a successful performing career there between 1731 and 1742. He may have been born around 1700 in Hanover, for he was the son of the dancing master ‘Denoyé’ employed by Georg Ludwig Elector of Hanover (later King George I of England) from at least 1694. 1 Musicians named ‘Desnoyers’ can be found in Paris records from the 1650s. 2 The elder Desnoyer may have been related to Antoine Desnoyers, who was a member of the ‘violons de la Chambre’ at the court of Louis XIV from at least the late 1670s until about 1694. 3 He may also have been the Desnoyers who danced in the 1689 and 1690 revivals at the Paris Opéra of Lully's Atys and Cadmus et Hermione respectively. 4 Whatever his lineage, George Desnoyer was already a skilled exponent of French belle dance style and technique when he first appeared in London, at the Drury Lane Theatre, early in 1721. Desnoyer's father died on 18 April 1721, and he was presumably appointed to succeed him for he left England during the summer of 1722 to become dancing master to George I's grandson Prince Frederick, who had remained in Hanover. His appointment at the electoral court formally ended early in 1730, and the following year Desnoyer returned to London. He was billed as ‘first dancer to the King of Poland’ when he appeared at Drury Lane in late 1731, and for the next few years he divided his time between London, Dresden and Warsaw. Desnoyer's London career lasted until 1742. Over the years, he performed solos, duets and group dances as well as appearing in a variety of afterpieces, and he enjoyed notable partnerships with several leading female dancers. Although virtually all the choreographies he performed are lost, there is much other evidence to shed light on Desnoyer's dancing style and technique. I have documented the lives and careers, as dancing masters, of George Desnoyer and his son Philip elsewhere. 5 In this article I will explore and analyse George Desnoyer's repertoire during his first two periods in London, 1721–1722 and 1731–1733. In a second article, I will look at his repertoire and his dancing partnerships between 1734 and his retirement from the London stage in 1742. 6

Abstract:
Statistical issues regarding music education in the 2nd Republic of Poland have not been discussed thoroughly so far. This article attempts to do so. The source material comprises statistical data from the Ministry of Art and Culture, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Education, as well as articles published in music literature of the interwar period. Presented statistics cover music schools, solo singing schools, schools for organists, schools of eurhythmics and art dance, as well as drama schools. Music was taught in all the aforementioned institutions, therefore reports treated all these schools en bloc. Existing sources enumerate schools, their managerial staff and the establishments’ addresses. Preserved statistical data also enabled a more detailed analysis, such as, for instance, recognition of pupils’ preferences as regards their choice of instruments, as well as music education accessibility in various parts of the country. The preserved statistical source material is probably incomplete, does not show a full picture of the then music education. It presents, however, with great accuracy, the figures regarding this type of education. Statistical information was collected truly meticulously by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Education, particularly in the late 1920s and in the 1930s. Along with primary and secondary education, music education became an important element of the overall education system in the interwar period.

The Korean wave, the influence and spread of Korean culture in European and American countries The Korean wave, especially over the past few years, has had a significant impact on the world. More and more people have begun to be interested in the culture of South Korea to a greater or lesser extent. Some people are interested only in K-pop or Korean series, but there are many people who expand their interest in Korean culture, start learning the language, history, and customs. Of all aspects of South Korean culture, K-pop is certainly the most popular. Much more artists organize concert tours for the benefit of European countries and America, in 2019, in Poland there were 15 such concerts. More and more often, Korean food festivals, stationary stores selling Korean cosmetics and food products are organized, in some countries, there even appear themed dance schools focusing on learning specific K-pop dance arrangements. The Korean wave also affects the perception of beauty by people – in 2018, on the annual list of the most handsome men, there appeared much more Koreans than in previous years, even members of the BTS group occupy the first places on the list.

Abstract:
Introduction. Injuries of the ankle joint are among the most common injuries of the locomotor system, occurring both among athletes and people involved in amateur sports and other recreational activities. The objective of the study was to assess the incidence of injuries to the ankle joint in a group of professional and amateur dancers representing different dance styles. Material and research method. The research initially covered a group of 98 dancers. Ultimately, 64 dancers qualified for the study, including 28 men (44%) and 36 women (56%) aged between 17 and 23 years. The study was conducted among the registered active dancers from all over Poland. It was based on a survey questionnaire designed by the researchers. The obtained data was subjected to calculations using the Excel 2010 spreadsheet. Results. In the group surveyed, 53 individuals (83%) suffered injury to only one ankle joint. Ankle joint injuries recurred with a variable frequency, usually between 2 and 5 times, in 7 (53%) ballroom dancers, 10 (59%) jazz dancers, 4(16%) dancers in the group of jazz dance, and 7 dancers in the group of modern jazz. Ankle joint injuries usually occurred during the training – 49 (76,6%) of the respondents, 10 individuals (15,6%) suffered injury after the training, and 5 persons (7,8%) – during various recreational activities. Conclusions. Ankle joint injuries affect a wide group of dancers, and their frequency is associated with the lack of professional experience. The majority of injuries occur in the initial period of dancing. The dance style and the type of shoes used, such as ballet shoes or highheeled shoes, have no effect on the incidence of injuries.

Abstract:
The traditional musicological perspective on Chopin's slow, minor-key mazurkas and mazurka sections—that he modeled these episodes on the kujawiak, a Polish folk dance from Kujawy region — is plagued by contradictory statements. Re-evaluation of source material reveals that the kujawiak, as it is understood in relation to Chopin's mazurkas, is largely a creation of Polish nationalism after Chopin's time. In Chopin's own time, the term kujawiak is used only sporadically and appears to be interchangeable with mazur; by the end of the nineteenth century, however, the kujawiak becomes an important marker of Polishness for which authors offer specific but widely diverging musical characterizations. It is around this time that writers also begin to emphasize the kujawiak's impact on Chopin's mazurkas, forging a persistent link between this imagined “national dance” and his compositions. In place of these vague and conflicting constructs, it is proposed that Chopin used the slow mazurka—the kind widely but anachronistically called the kujawiak—to summon nostalgia for the spatially and temporally distant (and mythical) Poland, through musical styles and gestures that include reminiscence and allusion; auditory distancing; disruptions of form and genre; and surface distortions. Nostalgia as a cultural and medical concept also provides a prism through which his contemporaries perceived Chopin's illness, his experience in exile, and his music.

Abstract:
Outdoor and adventure education is an increasingly popular trend in education in Poland – nowadays it is manifested mainly in practical forms and only in non-formal education. In Western Europe and the USA, with developed research methodology and a long tradition, this trend can be called science. Outdoor and adventure education is a heterogeneous sphere, but it has several elements that are at the heart of the adventure education method. One of its main assumptions is working with a specific “adventure medium” through which the intended goals are achieved. The most popular are outdoor sports and tourism, but more and more often new means are used, for example those derived from the arts. It is manifested mostly in practical activities (which is natural, as this field developed out of practice, and its theoretical and research background was created later). The use of arts is two-dimensional. The first dimension is based on visual arts (handicraft, painting), most often linked to outdoor education, and their main goal is to build relationships with nature. The second, less popular dimension, focuses on the use of body expression (theatre, dance, movement). In Poland, this trend is not yet known, whereas in Western countries there have appeared some articles showing the value of using arts in this area of education. The purpose of this article is to show how arts, and body expression in particular, may be used in outdoor and adventure education activities.

In 1996 the Polish theatre scholar Juliusz Tyszka was present at the gathering of the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) in Copenhagen. Though already seventy years old and still in recovery from a recent stroke, Fo was incapable of confining himself to a conventional lecture, but (against his doctor's advice) combined his talk with performing the points he was making, whether imitating the curves of a voluptuous girl or enacting a speech in his universal ‘language’ of ‘gramelot’. He was to live on for another twenty years before his death at the age of ninety on 13 October 2016, outliving Franca Rame by just three years. Abstract:
Abstract The sociology of culture and the sociology of valuation and evaluation are closely related (Lamont 2012). In both cases, social hierarchies are the primary, fundamental focal point. Usually, sociologists of culture show what the necessary conditions for building social boundaries in a given historical context are (see e.g. Bourdieu, 1984; Ang, 1985; Ikegami, 2005). The main aim of this paper, however, is to present how lowbrow aesthetics can resist fierce social critique and how social stigma related to “low” tastes can be reversed. I focus on “disco polo” – a genre of simple dance music that became popular in the early 1990s, almost disappeared in 2010s, and recently came back all of the sudden. Disco polo (henceforth: DP) formed an entire aesthetics style, comprising not only music and a kitschy (thus stigmatized and ridiculed) style of videos, but also androcentric values behind the lyrics, a specific way of dressing – with prominent status signifiers such as golden chains or sport cars. Although the empirical material comes from Poland, the core issue is far more generally applicable: the rehabilitation of the lowermost (from the point of view of Bourdieusian dominant classes) kitschy tastes (Kulka 1996; Ward 1996), which is very different from camp sensibility (Sontag 2018). How can lowbrow consumers resist symbolic oppression and derive pleasure from culturally sanctioned “shameful” objects? Focusing on the historical example of this typically Polish music genre, I will show under what circumstances the open rejection of legitimate tastes and admiration of low tastes is possible.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of application of Kinesiology Taping for musculoskeletal system disorders in dancers, in comparison with the standard physiotherapy procedures. Design Cross-sectional study. Methods Examined were 77 dancers of the Dance Theater from Poland, both male and female (58 women and 19 men), 18–25 years old (M=20.03, SD=2.67), who experienced pain in musculoskeletal system and who specialized in jazz dancing. All the examined patients had undergone a three weeks long therapy. In the test group (N=52), Kinesiology Taping was applied to the selected groups of muscles, peripheral joints and spine, with the tapes being replaced 3 times, after each 7 days of therapy. In the control group (N=25), the standard physiotherapy procedures were applied. For the assessment of effectiveness of the therapies, there were used: interviews, measurement of pelvic static, measurement of muscle strength with a dynamometer, measurement of hip joint range of motion with a digital inclinometer and measurement of pain with VAS. Results Kinesiology Taping application has brought significant improvements in recovering proper pelvic static, increasing muscle strength, extending active range of motion of hip joints and lowering level of subjective sensation of pain. Conclusions Effectiveness of the Kinesiology Taping application for musculoskeletal system disorders in dancers is comparable with the standard physiotherapy procedures, which makes it possible to obtain a similar therapeutic effect, using the painless, well accepted by patients method of treatment, which is addition costs less.

Abstract:
The two subfamilies Hemerodromiinae and Clinocerinae, also known as aquatic dance flies, are a group of small predatory insects occurring mainly in mountainous areas and the northern temperate. However, very little is known about distribution patterns for most of the species. Habitat preferences for 40 aquatic empidid species were analysed in the Pieniny Mts., Poland. Forty-six sampling sites from a major part of this relatively low mountain massif (400–770 m) were chosen, for which 17 micro and macrohabitat environmental variables were measured including both abiotic (altitude, stream mean width and depth, and shading) and biotic factors (13 dominant plant communities). Here we show that numerous studied aquatic Empididae were characterized by unique habitat preferences and were restricted to the foothills or the lower montane zone with only a few species characterized by wider elevational distribution. Chelifera pectinicauda, C. flavella, C. subangusta and Phyllodromia melanocephala (Hemerodromiinae), and Clinocera appendiculata, C. fontinalis, C. wesmaeli, Dolichocephala guttata, D. oblongoguttata, Kowarzia plectrum, Wiedemannia jazdzewskii, and W. thienemanni (Clinocerinae) were clearly associated with the highest altitudes and shaded areas while W. bistigma, W. lamellata, W. phantasma, and W. tricuspidata (Clinocerinae) were clearly associated with the lower elevated, wider stream valleys overgrown by willow brakes. Species richness and diversity decreased along elevational gradient with the hump-shaped diversity pattern noted for the subfamily Clinocerinae. The altitude, size of river/stream as well as the type of plant community were found as the most important factors in the distribution of the studied aquatic empidid species. The present study is the first one focused on elevational diversity gradient and habitat preferences of Hemerodromiinae and Clinocerinae of central Europe, and one of only a few in the world.

Abstract:
The presented article is the first study of this kind, where the musical life of Volhynia of the mid 16th - early 17th century is specially considered. In the study, we almost exclusively focused on the secular segment of musical everyday life. On the basis of the analysis of historical acts, fiscal accounting documents and other sources, three thematic sections were formed. The first section is devoted to the study of musicians in Volhynia. In the fiscal accounting documents, initially the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and later the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth (Lesser Poland Province of the Polish Crown), various terms are used to refer to musicians and related professions: "dudari", "skomorokhy", "skrypali", "trubachi", "medwednyky" "muzyky", "hudky". From these and other documents we learn about the number of musicians in different small settlements. Among the nicknames that were given to musicians, the "dudnyk" and "skrypka" prevail, sometimes there is a "hudka". Separately, in the act documents other music specialties are mentioned: "Jews Cantors", "organist", "pyshchyk", "trubach", "bubnist". Also, in the documents of such kind, one could find some episodes from the everyday life of the musicians. Musical instruments are discussed in the second section of the article: "kobza", "turkish kobza", "lute", "quintar lute", "violin", "italian violin", "cithara", "duda", "smyk", "truba", "bubon". The last section deals with two separate phenomena of Volhynia musical culture - music in dance and Volochebnyy ceremonies. The lack of study of Volhynia musical culture in previous years encouraged the emergence of various myths, in particular, about the poverty of the musical culture of the Volhynia autochthonous population. According to the myth, the pipe organs of the Catholic temples were brought to these territories by the Polish colonists after the Union of Lublin. However, as it is shown in the article, the first mention of the Lutsk organist dates back to the time before the Union of Lublin and the name of organist indicates his Ruthenian origin. Thus, the obtained results allow us not only to fill the gaps in Ukrainian historical musicology of the mid 16th - early 17th century, but also to hope for the appearing of similar studies of other Ukrainian lands.

Abstract:
Among the wealth of German operettas, an important place is occupied by works referring to Polish subjects in their plots, or featuring Polish characters. The moral judgments passed on the persons of the drama frequently reveal generalisations concerning large communities or even entire nations. At the present stage of research, I can confirm the existence of about a dozen German operettas containing Polish motives. For my analysis, I have selected three operettas: Polnische Wirtschaft, Polenblut and Die blaue Mazur, composed in more or less the same period – the 1910s. An analysis of characters and topics recurring in these operettas proves that certain prejudices and stereotypes play a major role in the construction of events and the characterisation of dramatis personae. An important role in the creation of national stereotypes is also played by musical categories associated with Polish culture, mainly national dances – the krakowiak and the mazur. The three stage works discussed in this paper, created in a period of historical transformation associated with Poland’s rebirth as an independent country, appear to offer excellent arguments in the ongoing debate on the role of national stereotypes in communication between neighbouring nations.

Abstract:
The lute tablature CH-Bu F IX 70 was compiled by Emanuel Wurstisen (1572–1616), a Basel University student, who became a physician in Biel toward the end of his life. His biography has been supplemented here so as to include new information concerning, among other things, his collaboration with German surgeon Wilhelm Fabricius Hildanus during the first decade of the seventeenth century. When commencing his tablature, in 1591, Wurstisen planned to divide it into eight books, each devoted to works of a similar genre. The manuscript comprises nearly five hundred works, mostly anonymous, while among those of known attribution, compositions by Orlando di Lasso take pride of place. Composers mentioned by name include Amandus Polanus a Polansdorf, a professor of theology at Basel University, who wrote his Was Gott will most likely after the death of his wife, in 1605, which thus becomes the hypothetical terminus post quem for the completion of the tablature. There are many Polish elements in the manuscript. Piotr Poźniak long since identified the works signed with the initials C.S. as written by Kasper Sielicki, and noted that the two works by Wojciech Długoraj, as well as the Fantasia by Diomedes Cato, differ from the versions published by J. B. Besard (1603). Hence they may have reached Wurstisen not through printed editions, but in some other way. The author studies how these and other pieces from the Polish repertoire (including Polish dances) could have found their way to Basel. Among those who could have played some part in this ‘import’ of music, she points, first and foremost, to students and residents who came to Basel from Poland, such as Marcin Chmielewski, a professor of Basel University, the medical student Orestes Cato, brother of Diomedes, and the poet Daniel Naborowski, who frequently returned to Switzerland. The attributions of works from CH-Bu F IX 70 are complemented by the identification of the composer of works signed in the tablature with the initials F.D.D (F.D.D.D.) as Fridericus de Drusina Dantiscanus, a lutenist from Royal Prussia, son of Benedict de Drusina. The pieces by this composer found in Wurstisen’s manuscript (Exercitium and a pair of dances, Passomezo and Saltarello) are his only known works.

Streszczenie W pracy dokonano prognozy zasobów wód podziemnych do wykorzystania w celu szczelinowania łupków gazonośnych w obszarze Basenu Lubelskiego w 2030 r.

Abstract:
Abstract Henryk Oskar Kolberg (1814–1890), a musician, composer, the greatest Polish ethnographer and one of the fathers of European ethnomusicology, collected over 20,000 folk songs, dances, and instrumental melodies from the territory of today’s Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and other Slavic countries. The musical culture of the Hutsuls was an object of Oskar Kolberg’s interest in the late 1870s and early 1880s. The research material related to this region was collected by Kolberg, similarly as in other regions, from two different types of sources. The core of his work consisted of field notes written down during his few trips to that region. Another way of collecting information for Kolberg’s publication included an extensive study of already published resources – historical and ethnographical works, collections of songs, short articles, etc. Kolberg’s study of the musical culture of the Hutsuls is a very valuable source for the history of the culture of this part of Europe.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of variable and constant thermal conditions on embryonic development of three endangered fish species from the genus Leuciscus. Wild living spawners of dace Leuciscus leuciscus (L.), ide L. idus (L.) and chub L. cephalus (L.) were obtained from rivers belonging to the Pasleka River basin (northeastern Poland) and next transported to a hatchery for the purpose of conducting artificial reproduction. The obtained eggs were fertilized and next incubated under a variety of thermal protocols: slow gradual heating of water (M1), rapid increase in temperature at the end of incubation (M2), fluctuating temperature (M3) and two constant temperatures (optimum and sublethal). Variable thermal changes of water were also continued after hatching, up to the yolk sac resorption by larvae. During the study it was shown that relative to incubation at optimal temperatures (12.3°C for dace, 15.7°C for ide and 19.0°C for chub), thermal modifications had no clear influence on a decrease in survival rates (differences among regimes did not exceed 5%) and increase in developmental deformations (differences below 1.0%) observed among the hatched embryos. The duration of egg incubation and developmental rate increased with increasing temperature. In the systems with modified temperature the embryonic development of dace (from fertilisation to commencement of exogenous food intake) took from 9.5 to 22.5 days, for ide from 6.1 to 12 days and for chub from 5.0 to 10.5 days. The yolk sac resorption stage in the particular species occurred from 11.7 to 23 days for dace, 7.5 to 13.2 days for ide and 5.5 to 12.8 days for chub. Different time of hatching was also reflected in the level of ontogeny of hatched embryos. Among the fish hatched at modified temperatures the largest sizes, similar to those characteristic of fish incubated at optimum temperatures, were observed in individuals originating from variants where the temperature fluctuated. The developmental disproportions among the embryos of studied species originating from different thermal regimes observed at the time of leaving the egg shells were definitely larger than during the following development stages. This study also confirmed that the embryos of studied species can adapt to increasing water temperature due to global warming up to 19.0 (dace), 23.0°C (ide) and 27.5°C (chub). The obtained results are very important not only for practical purposes but also from physiological and ecological aspects.

Abstract:
Diel dynamics of species richness and fish abundance were studied in three lowland rivers that differed significantly in size (discharge) in to the upper Vistula River drainage system (Poland). Shallow sandy habitats at point bars were repeatedly sampled with beach seining over 24-h periods. Species richness peaked at dusk and then decreased throughout the 24-h period in all the rivers. Overall fish abundance changed similarly in the smallest and the largest river, whereas in the mid-sized river it increased in the late afternoon hours. Some species (three gudgeon species, golden loach, and chub) were persistently nocturnal, whereas others (dace, bleak, and roach) shifted to diurnal activity in the mid-sized and large rivers. These differences in diel changes in the abundance of certain species might be explained in the context of variation in availability (i.e., proximity) of other, more heterogeneous habitats.

Abstract:
Representation of Female Immigrants from Ukraine in the Polish Press Discourse Public opinion polls in Poland prove that Poles have a reluctant attitude towards Ukrainians. However, these data do not show how these attitudes differentiate according to the respondent’s gender. Official data on mixed marriages indicate that Polish men more often get married to Ukrainians than to other foreigners. It can therefore be assumed that the sex of immigrants is a significant variable affecting the attitude towards foreigners. Considering the significant influence of the media on shaping attitudes towards immigrants and reproducing ethno-stereotypes, we should look more closely at the representation of women immigrants from Ukraine created and maintained in the public discourse. It can be assumed that the image of women represents the male point of view, treating female migrants as sexual objects and caregivers. Other variables are also important (eg. age, level of education) which form an intersectional image. The research is focused on the way in which female Ukrainian immigrants are linguistically represented in selected periodicals in 2007 and 2018. The time intervals will allow us to examine the stability of the discourse. Two methods of analyses are applied: content analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). In the final part of the article, I will compare the representation of Polish migrants (based on studies already published) and migrants from Ukraine in the Polish press. Keywords: female immigrants, Ukraine, press discourse, CDA Streszczenie Badania opinii publicznej w Polsce dowodzą, że Polacy mają niechętny stosunek do Ukraińców.

Abstract:
Background. This article is devoted to the actual issues of musical interpretation in connection with one of the most common genres of modern art – genre of transcription in its various aspects. These questions are considered in aspect of genre specificity of transcription as the work with dual authorship that determines a special methodology of such musical samples study, the need of the comparative analysis of the original and transcription versions, the study of principles of composition and artistic interpretation, the manifestations of the performing characteristics in it. This field of creativity encourages researchers to study the principles of artistic thinking, inter-style communication, and virtual creative dialogue between the authors of the original and the version at all levels of musical content and form using the samples of transcriptions. The example of such approach is the given research, which studies the mechanisms of musical interpretation creation in the genres transcription and arrangement in aspect of the contemporary composing and performing practices. The object of the study is the creativity by a bright representative of the Kharkiv school of the playing on folk instruments, Andrii Strilets, the subject of consideration in this article are his orchestra transcriptions-arrangements. The purpose of the research is to determine the principles of interpretation and inter-style dialogue in the genre of transcription on the example of the musical piece “Jazz-slide” by M. Tovpeco for two accordions in the arrangement by A. Strilets. For the first time in musicology this composition becomes an object for the theoretical analysis in aspect of the artistic interpretation and inter-style dialogue in genre of transcription-arrangement. This determines the relevance and scientific novelty of the study. For the first time also, the research is focused on the multifaceted creative activity of the talented Kharkiv musician A. Strilets, which combines the various directions – composition, conducting, bayan performance and pedagogy. Results of the study. The list of the works by A. Strilets includes dozens of positions, in particular, the orchestral opuses – about 40, the vocal pieces – more than 40, there are also the dance music, vocal-choreographic compositions and others. Composer prepared for publication the author’s collection “Concert works for bayan”, which will be a musical presentation of his work. Pedagogical work of the musician is successfully combined with the performing activity. A. Strilets is a talented accordion / bayan performer (the winner of all-Ukrainian and international competitions, among them, the prestigious international competition “Vogtland Music Days” in Klingenthal, Germany; participant of tours as a bayan player-performer in Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine) and conductor. He worked as a conductor at the Kharkiv City Theater of Folk Music “Oberegi”; he made a significant contribution to the creation of the “Slobozhanskii Big Academic Song and Dance Ensemble” (2011), which he conducts nowadays, and also acts as an author and arranger of a significant part of the musical repertoire of this ensemble. Being the head of the folk instruments orchestra, musician directs his actions, first of all, to improve the performing level of the musicians, to expand the concert repertoire and the genre diversity of the performed compositions, to change and complete the instrumental compositions. The study also highlights several signs of the pedagogy of A. Strilets. As a teacher, he encourages in his class the independent thinking of the performer and the searching of a reasonable interpretation, provides the information about stylistic features of works for fully disclosing of its content, he takes into account the analysis of their dramaturgy and form, carefully relates to the reproduction of author’s remarks, aims from the musicians the task of the most accurate composer’s intention disclosure. These pedagogical principles project onto the compositional features of A. Strilets’ works, which are clearly demonstrated in sphere of his arranger’s work. The study specifies a number of basic composer principles and methods used by A. Strilets in the transcription-arrangement of “Jazz Slide”. 1. First of all, the arranger updates the timbre-texture complex of the original, redistributing certain content and form-building components in the musical “space” and “time”, giving them new configurations, which leads to strengthening or, in opposite, leveling (down to rotation) of their original dramatic functions – general and minor, solo and accompanying, monological and dialogical, ensemble and orchestral, melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and others. 2. The sound-texture aspect demonstrates both smallest and systemic changes of musical and expressive complex of the original – from the separate elements to their cumulative action, which contributes to the genre-style qualities transformation of the work, strengthening the through development in it, up to the presence of signs of symphonization. 3. Hence, the genre concept of the work is updated, and it leads to the emergence of a new genre quality – “concert-ness” – and to the consolidation of the concert status of the work (which becomes similar to a concert for two accordions / bayans with an orchestra). The quality of “concert” is also achieved due to the growing role of soloists, in particular, the strengthening of solo replicas in the orchestra (separation of elements of the original melodic themes and distribution them to orchestral groups), which leads to the polyphonization of the musical facture, emphasizing (new coloring) some features of the melodic lines of the soloists and like other. 4. At the level of harmony, on the one hand, the emphasis of its original content, on the other hand, the search of its melodic potential is observed. 5. The rhythmic parameter of sound-facture complex contributes to the enhancement of genre-style semantics of the original source, taking into account its jazz “filling”. 6. Comparative analysis of the original and version reveals signs of a method of composer interpretation that involves a creative component in arranging, supplementing, and rethinking the content of the original. Conclusion. In course of studying it was found that the arranger, at the preserving of the structure of the original piece – a contrast-composite form, updates the procession-dynamic and dramatic sides of it, primarily due to the action of the timbre-texture complex as the key interpretative factor in creating of the orchestral version of the original. The prospect of the research. The considered issues require, of course, the further research – both from the point of view of the artistic significance of genres, arrangement and transcription, in particular, for orchestras and ensembles of folk instruments, and in the aspect of the action of mechanisms of artistic interpretation and the features of the transcription process, which naturally combines composer and performing arts. The work of the talented Kharkiv musician Andrii Strilets who is one of the most prominent representatives of the Kharkiv school of folk instruments, deserves a separate study.

Abstract:
One Culture or Multiple Cultures? The Diversity of Roma People in PolandThere are no universal criteria which would be useful to describe the diversity of all of the Roma. Their presence in given country is linked to adaptive processes to majority societies. It is the majority that creates condition and space to which minorities need to adapt somehow. The results of the above-mentioned adaptive processes also vary and depend on an external context. The attitude of given populations towards minorities and the current political and economic situation of given country, where the Roma settled had and still has significant influence on mentioned processes. The way of life of different Romani groups has also a great importance, because sedentary way of life (typical for most European Roma) and external influences especially on culture and models of lifestyle also furthered the adaptive processes. The cultural diversity among the Roma is the case not only with the groups living in different countries. It needs to be emphasized that the Roma who have lived in one country for centuries are not a homogenous group in terms of their culture. Previous migration processes and sedentary or nomadic way of life had a great influence on this internal diversity. In Poland with four distinguished Romani groups such diversity occurs between Carpathian Roma (Bergitka Roma, Polish Highlander Roma) and traditionally nomadic groups: Polska Roma, Lovara, Kelderari. This article is mainly based on available sources and dissertations on the subject. However it refers to the field research regarding the use of European Union’s funds for the Roma community in Poland, which was conducted by the author in 2010 and 2011.

Abstract:
Stosunki polsko-żydowskie podczas drugiej wojny światowej – to temat w szczególny sposób złożony i obciążony emocjami. Wiele not opatrzonych jest zdjęciem bohatera.

Abstract:
In this article Anna Porubcansky discusses the work of Song of the Goat Theatre not only in its artistic practice, but as a life practice. Based in Wrocław in Poland, the group continues a Polish tradition of experimental theatre practice as seen in the work of Juliusz Osterwa, Jerzy Grotowski, and Włodzimierz Staniewski. A fundamental influence on Song of the Goat has been the belief in Buddhism of its co-founders Grzegorz Bral and Anna Zubrzycki, which has shaped a performance practice rooted in the principles of interconnection and compassion. The group focuses its work on ‘coordination’, an approach that seeks to create a profound sense of harmony within and between each actor and every element of his or her work through training, improvising, and research on diverse songs, dances, myths, and rituals. Maintaining connection to the world through this material, Bral and Zubrzycki extend the group's artistic work through social projects such as the Brave Festival, which celebrates lost and dying cultural traditions in an attempt to create a performance practice that is actively integrated with the social world. Few academic publications are available on Song of the Goat, and this article draws on three years of extensive fieldwork with the company, utilizing interviews and personal observations of training, rehearsals, expeditions, and performance development for its most recent production, Macbeth. Anna Porubcansky is currently completing her PhD in the Department of Drama at Goldsmiths, University of London.

W marcu 2020 r. WHO wprowadziło stan pandemii.

Abstract:
The 18th International Conference on Physical Organic Chemistry (ICPOC-18) took place at the Gromada Hotel in Warsaw, Poland on 20-25 August 2006 under the local auspices of Warsaw University and the Polish Chemical Society. It was organized by a local Organizing Committee from the Department of Chemistry of Warsaw University led by Prof. Tadeusz M. Krygowski.Although physical organic chemistry began in the 1930s and at the beginning was concerned mostly with the mechanisms and kinetics of organic reactions and their dependence on structural and medium effects, a great extension of the field toward bioorganic, organic, organometallic, theoretical, catalytic, supramolecular, and photochemistry has been observed for decades now. Representative topics for modern physical organic chemistry include: reaction mechanisms; reactive intermediates; bioprocesses; novel structures; reactivity relationships; solvent, substituent, isotope, and solid-state effects; long-lived charges; sextet or open-shell species; magnetic, nonlinear optical, and conducting molecules; and molecular recognition. Contributions from all of these fields were presented.About 220 researchers, representing 31 countries, participated in the conference. The following eight plenary lectures were presented:R. Huber (Nobel laureate, Germany): "Molecular machines in biology"A. Yonath (Israel): "The spectacular ribosomal architecture: Nascent proteins voyage towards folding via antibiotics binding-pockets"P. Coppens (USA): "Time-resolved diffraction studies of molecular excited states and beyond"K. S. Kim (South Korea): "De novo design based on nano-recognition: Functional molecules/materials and nanosensors/nanodevices"I. P. Beletskaya (Russia): "Mechanistic aspects and synthetic application of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds formation in substitution and addition reactions catalyzed by transition-metal complexes"S. Fukuzumi (Japan): "New development of electron-transfer catalytic systems"D. Braga (Italy): "Making crystals from crystals: A green route to crystal engineering and polymorphism"L. Latos-Grażyński (Poland): "Carbaporphyrinoids: Exploring metal ion-arene interaction in a macrocyclic environment"Additionally, 17 invited talks and, during two parallel sessions, 51 oral communications were presented. There were more than 100 poster presentations.I am pleased to introduce a representative selection of outstanding papers based on plenary and invited lectures delivered at ICPOC-18. In addition to the contributions mentioned above, this volume contains: a discussion of modern understanding of aromaticity (P. Fowler, UK); fascinating studies of new mechanisms focused on reactive intermediates (R. Moss, USA); interpretation of acidity, basicity, and hydride affinity by the trichotomy paradigm (Z. Maksić, Croatia); a quantum approach to proton transfer across hydrogen bond (F. Fillaux, France); a discussion of self-assembly of nickel(II) pseudorotaxene nanostructures on Au surface (R. Bilewicz, Poland); a discussion of synthesis and properties of macrocyclic receptors for anions (J. Jurczak, Poland); a description of novel organic-inorganic frameworks (J. Klinowski, UK); an application of microemulsions as microreactors (J. R. Leis, Spain); a discussion of silicon rehybridization and molecular rearrangements in hypercoordinate silicon dichelates (D. Kost, Israel); and a description of solvation in pure and mixed solvents (O. El Seoud, Brazil). All of these papers exemplify the broad range and diversity of interests of the participants and characterize the present and future challenges in physical organic chemistry. The social program of the conference included: a welcome reception; a Chopin music concert organized in cooperation with the Frederic Chopin Society; conference excursions, including Warsaw Old Town and Żelazowa Wola, the house where Chopin was born; the Warsaw Uprising (1944) Museum and the Heroes of Ghetto Memorial; and folk music dances during the conference dinner.Because ICPOC-18 was attended by quite a number of young chemists from all over the world, it can be expected that the next conference in this series, ICPOC-19, which will be held in July 2008 and is being organized by Profs. J. Ramon Leis from the University of Santiago de Compostela and A. Santaballa from the University of A Coruna (Spain), will not only reflect recent developments and the rich potential of physical organic chemistry, but will also demonstrate the aspirations of younger generations of scientists in this field.Krzysztof WoźniakConference Editor

Abstract:
National and Ethnic Relationships Within the Suwalki and Kaunas Regions During the Times of Poland’s National Rebirth and Shaping Its New Borders This article discusses relationships between various ethnic and national groups that were characteristic for the North-Western part of region called Eastern Borderlands at the turn of XIX century. Vast literature on this subject is available, but it should be noted that the subject itself remains under strong political and ideological influence, it is also surrounded by many myths and common beliefs; and last but not least, there are historical sources that still have never been used in the discussion. One of such sources, not yet being used for research on ethnic divisions within the Polish-Lithuanian borderland at the beginning of XX century, are data gathered by Warsaw Statistical Committee in volume II (Ethnic Statistics for the Congress Poland) of the book Territorial Development of Polish Nationality(1917), by Włodzimierz Wakar. This work includes information on headcount of Polish and Lithuanian populations in years 1910 and 1914, divided by all communes and towns in the Suwalki Governorate. These statistical data are of exceptional scientific value, as they were gathered and aggregated at the commune level, showing detailed characteristics of ethnic transformations. By comparing the information regarding populations’ headcount in 1914 and 1910, it is possible to assess which of the two populations grew within this 4-year period. Thorough knowledge of dynamics and direction of ethnic (nationalistic) transformations taking place within the Suwalki Governorate, might bring us some interesting answers. It might help us find out if just before the World War I other regions inhabited by both Polish and Lithuanian populations, such as Vilnius, Grodno and Kaunas provinces, were under the process of polonization or lithuanization. Zawierają one informacje o liczbie ludności narodowości polskiej i litewskiej w roku 1910 oraz w 1914 we wszystkich gminach i miastach Guberni Suwalskiej.

Soil subject to a three-year pot experiment was analyzed, in which the following factors were considered: (i) soil contamination with nickel (0, 75, 150 and 225 mg Ni kg-1 of soil); (ii) liming (0 Ca and Ca in a dose calculated according to 1 Hh of soil); (iii) organic fertilization (with no organic fertilization, rye straw and brown coal from the Turów coalmine). The test plant was orchardgrass, which was harvested in the amount of four cuts each year of the experiment. The copper and zinc fractions were assessed using the BCR method, whereas the pH was calculated using the potentiometer method. The total content of copper and zinc in the analyzed soil did not exceed the values of the geochemical background of the soils of Poland. No impact of the varied content of nickel in the soil on the total content and distribution of Cu and Zn was found in the investigated fractions. Liming caused an increase in the total content of zinc in the analyzed soil and a decrease in the content of Cu and Zn in the F1 fraction. The straw and brown coal caused an increase in the content of both metals in the soil in the F3 fraction.

Analizowano glebę po trzyletnim doświadczeniu wazonowym, w którym uwzględniono następujące czynniki: 1. zanieczyszczenie gleby niklem (0,75, 150 i 225 mg Ni kg-1 gleby); 2. wapnowanie (0 Ca i Ca w dawce wyliczonej wg 1 Hh gleby); 3. nawożenie organiczne (bez nawożenia organicznego, słoma żytnia i węgiel brunatny pochodzący z kopalni w Turowie). Frakcje miedzi i cynku oznaczono metodą BCR, a pH metodą potencjometryczną.
