Abstract:
The Chant or music used by the Papal choir, and indeed in most Catholic cathedrals and abbey churches is, excepting in some instances, ancient. Gregory the Great collected it into a body and gave it the form in which it now appears, though not the author of it. The chant of the psalms is simple and affecting, composed of Lydian, Phrygian and other Greek and Roman tunes, without many notes, but with a sufficient inflection to render them soft and plaintive or bold and animating…. This ancient music which has long been known by the name of the Gregorian chant, so well adapted to the gravity of divine service, has been much disfigured in the process of time by the bad taste of the middle and the false refinements of the latter ages. The first encumbered it with an endless succession of dull unnecessary notes, dragging their slow length along, and burthening the ear with a dead weight of sound; the other infected it with the melting airs, the laboured execution, the effeminate graces of the orchestra, useless to say the least even in the theatre, but profane and almost sacrilegious in the church. Some care seems to have been taken to avoid these defects in the papal choir. The general style and spirit of the ancient and primitive music have been retained and some modern compositions of known and acknowledged merit, introduced on stated days and in certain circumstances. Of musical instruments, the organ only is additional in St Peters, or rather in the Papal chapel, and even then not always: voices only are employed in general, and as those voices are numerous, perfect in their kind, and in thorough unison with one another, and as the singers themselves are concealed from view, the effect is enchanting and brings to mind ‘the celestial voices in full harmonic number joined’ that sometimes reached the ears of our first parents in paradise, and ‘lifted their thoughts to heaven’.

Abstract:
Abstract In “The Choice Theory of Contracts,” we explain contractual freedom and celebrate the plurality of contract types. Here, we reply to critics by refining choice theory and showing how it fits and shapes what we term the “Contract Canon”. I. Freedom. (1) Charles Fried challenges our account of Kantian autonomy, but his views, we show, largely converge with choice theory. (2) Nathan Oman argues for a commerce-enhancing account of autonomy. We counter that he arbitrarily slights noncommercial spheres central to human interaction. (3) Yitzhak Benbaji suggests that choice theory’s commitment to autonomy is overly perfectionist. Happily, in response to Benbaji, we can cite with approval Charles Fried’s point that contract types are “enabling our liberties.” II. Choice. (4) Aditi Bagchi criticizes our inattention to impediments to choice. We show how choice theory’s commitments to both multiplicity and relational justice ameliorate these impediments. (5) Gregory Klass explores parol evidence to highlight the mechanisms of choice. We substantially concur with his position, and show how such mechanisms can ensure voluntariness, an essential element of choice. (6) Oren Bar-Gill and Clayton Gillette question the institutional capacity of existing legal actors to implement choice theory. Working from the example of cohabitation, we offer a somewhat more optimistic view. III. Contracts. (7) Peter Benson contends our focus on the rational slights the reasonable. Although we did not use this Rawlsian vocabulary, choice theory complies with its strictures — more so than transfer theory. (8) Daniel Markovits and Alan Schwartz claim provocatively that contract theory must: capitulate before pluralism (as they endorse); leverage it; or fall victim to a so-called “embracing” approach (their charge against us). We reject the charge that choice theory is foundationally value-pluralist. Instead, we cabin pluralism and put it to work. (9) The Contract Canon starts on the next big step for choice theory by explaining existing doctrine (rebutting Benson on lack of fit) and helping adjudicate contract practice (countering Markovits and Schwartz on the vices of our pluralism). Each Article in this Issue advances the field; each prompts us to refine choice theory — all steps, we hope, toward a more just and justified law of contract.

Abstract:
Swan Lake has a central place in the ballet repertoire. Generally seen as the ballerina's ballet, one of the greatest difficulties in presenting Swan Lake as a credible drama has been the historically marginal role played by Siegfried, the Prince. As choreographer-producers have struggled in the challenge to make the ballet work dramatically, his character has been transformed from onlooker to major influence in a series of reinterpretations of this classic work. In this article Gregory Sporton raises questions about what motivates Siegfried and why that is important for our understanding of the ballet, offering an alternative view of Siegfried's character. Gregory Sporton is Director of the Visualisation Research Unit in the Department of Art at Birmingham Institute of Art and Design. His interest in Swan Lake emerges from his background as a dancer and long periods of research in the former Soviet Union during 2004–2006, when he was able to see at first hand most of the Russian productions referenced in this article. His other published work includes ethnographic accounts of dance and its place in the flow of culture.

Abstract:
Background:Fibrotic diseases are characterized by excessive extracellular matrix production as a result of immune-mediated permanent fibroblast activation. Innate lymphoid cells type II (ILC2) are an only recently discovered cell type involved in barrier integrity and tissue homeostasis. There is upcoming evidence that ILC2s play a central role in mediating fibrotic diseases. Objectives:The aim of the study was to further elucidate the role of ILC2s in fibrotic tissue remodeling and fibroblast activation. Methods:Skin biopsies of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) or sclerodermatous chronic graft versus host disease (scGvHD) as well as lung biopsies of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) were analyzed by immunofluorescence (IF) staining. Single cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) was performed on ILCs from fibrotic skin and lung of bleomycin-challenged mice. Further characterization of ILC2 phenotypes in fibrosis models was done by flow cytometry. In vitroculture of fibroblasts and ILC2s was used to study cellular interaction and fibrotic activation. Quantitative realtime-PCR, western blot, IF staining and ELISA were used as readouts. Results:Two different subtypes of ILC2s were found in skin of SSc and scGvHD patients as well as in lungs of IPF patients with one subpopulation being particularly increased in fibrotic tissue. Single cell RNA-sequencing confirmed the existence of two major populations of ILC2s in experimental fibrosis. One subtype showed features of immature ILC2 progenitors and was actively recruited from the bone marrow during fibrotic tissue remodeling. The other ILC2 subset was highly activated and expressed pro-fibrotic cytokines. These profibrotic ILC2s directly interacted with fibroblasts in a cell contact dependent manner. Semaphorin 4A (SEMA4A) expressed by ILC2s bound to Plexin D1 (PLXND1) on fibroblasts. This interaction resulted into fibrotic imprinting with high expression levels of the transcription factor PU.1 which was recently described as central regulator of the pro-fibrotic gene expression program (Wohlfahrt et al. 2019). Signaling through Jagged 1 (JAG1) and Notch receptor 2 (NOTCH2) was identified as a second mechanism of interaction between fibroblasts and ILC2s. JAG1 expressed by fibroblasts activated NOTCH2 signaling in ILC2s which emphazised the secretion of pro-fibrotic cytokines. Conclusion:We identified a bidirectional interaction between ILCs and fibroblasts incorporating a vicious circle of fibrotic tissue remodelling. As ILCs are still not accessible as therapeutic targets these results might contribute to the development of new strategies for anti-fibrotic therapies.References:[1]Wohlfahrt, Thomas, Simon Rauber, Steffen Uebe, Markus Luber, Alina Soare, Arif Ekici, Stefanie Weber, Alexandru-Emil Matei, Chih-Wei Chen, Christiane Maier, Emmanuel Karouzakis, Hans P. Hoppu, Petri. "Nordic Folk Dances as Imaginary Geographies." Congress on Research in Dance Conference Proceedings 2012 (2012): 76–80. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/cor.2012.8.

Abstract:
Geography is a feature that typically belongs to the realm of folk dance. Folk dances are often defined as belonging to a certain region, and it is seldom they are considered a result of artistic creativity. In the Nordic countries, folk dancers have co-operated intensively since the early twentieth century, sharing dances with each other. In this presentation, I am arguing that this co-operation has created imaginative geographies of the Nordic region, filled not with landscapes, terrains, or water systems, but with movements, holds, and music. As an example, I will present two Nordic folk dance books from the 1960s. In these books, dances are attached to certain geographical areas, which is not merely contextual information but also entails stylistic features of a specific dance. Most dances are connected to a certain parish, and in some cases the province is mentioned, as well. In practice, for most folk dancers, the names of the areas do not have much significance as material domain, but they are elements of a map of a danced region, and as such the dances are a part of imaginative geographies, performed spaces. Following the British geographer Derek Gregory, I see folk dances as a continuation of performances that necessarily creates novelty, which allows one to experience spaces differently. The books are danced atlases presenting the Nordic region as a series of performed spaces. They address how the Nordic region has been represented in a danced form, emphasizing affiliation and unity, as well as distinction and disjointedness.

Shafer, Byron E., and Raymond J. La Raja. "Governing through the Senate." Forum 9, no. 4 (January 3, 2011). http://dx.doi.org/10.2202/1540-8884.904.

Full text
Abstract:
The Senate is often the institutional pivot for political conflict in the United States, so this issue of The Forum focuses on ‘governing through the Senate’. Charles O. Jones considers its inherent peculiarities as the institution meant to ‘go second’ in a separated system; Sarah Binder argues that the modern Senate is moving away from its constitutional role; Frances Lee considers the role of party competition in shaping senatorial behavior; Barry Burden asks about the influence of senatorial polarization and party balance within the bicameral context; and Daniel DiSalvo contrasts partisan polarization with divided government as influences on senatorial behavior. Randall Strahan observes one particular senator negotiating this complicated framework; Wendy Schiller and Jennifer Cassidy consider the dynamics of cooperation (or not) among same-state senators; and Andrea Hatcher contrasts a majority leader who lost re-election with another who won. Ryan Black, Anthony Madonna, and Ryan Owens examine a very private form of senatorial obstruction, ‘blue slip behavior’; Gregory Koger examines what is surely the best-known form of obstruction, the filibuster; Eric Schickler and Gregory Wawro argue that, whatever its collective impact, senators have multiple reasons to protect this filibuster; and James Wallner closes with a substantive realm, budgeting, where the absence of policy action by the Senate is critical. In book reviews, Joseph Cooper uses Matthew N. Green, The Speaker of the House: A Study in Leadership, to think about the study of Congress more generally, and Matthew Green responds; Amnon Cavari reviews B. Dan Wood, The Myth of Presidential Representation; and Philip Brenner reviews Robert D. Putnam and David E. Campbell, American Grace: How Religion Divides and Unites Us.
