Abstract:
This study of the hydraulic properties of a fractured rock mass is based on data from field injection tests and fracture measurements, and on simulations of the fracture system in the bedrock upstream from the Daniel Johnson dam at Manic 5. Analysis of water injection tests indicates that the bedrock can be divided into two zones with respect to the permeability. The more permeable zone, which is the object of this study, shows a log-normal distribution of the hydraulic conductivities.Using several stochastic simulations of fracture networks, the fracture aperture has been adjusted gradually to reproduce the rock mass permeability estimated from injection tests. The results show that the fracture system geometry, as well as the fracture porosity and the fracture lengths and densities, influences widely the hydraulic properties of a fractured medium and particularly the fracture porosity. Also, the estimation of the fracture porosity is sensitive to a number of other factors, including the assumed hydraulic boundary conditions, the field estimation of the hydraulic conductivities, and the orientation of the simulation planes. The issue of the relationship between private property and common property has engaged both legal and economic scholars in a long series of controversies over the meaning, the sequence of development, and the superiority of private vs. common property. The issues debated relate to the efficiency, equity and sustainability of private property as contrasted to common property. Many scholars think of contemporary examples of common property as remnants of the past, likely to disappear during the twenty-first century. Abstract:
Dam safety is always a high priority issue since failures result in severe property damage and loss of life. Many countries require that all existing dams need to be inspected and evaluated regularly. Monitoring instruments have long been an integral part of the dam safety process by providing information for detailed analyses as well as for monitoring the current condition of dams. In this thesis, statistical models are used to infer behavior characteristics of a multiple arch dam. First, a statistical model known as the Hydrostatic-Season-Time (H-S-T) model is fitted to each individual displacement component from pendulum data for the Daniel Johnson Dam, a multiple arch concrete dam located in Northern Quebec. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used with the data from pendulums. A modified PCA analysis was also performed after removing thermal effects. A C++ language program (DASOD) was developed for the estimation of the H-S-T model, visualization of results, and data preparation for the principal component analysis. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
