Abstract:

Abstract:
Our thesis deals with this issue related to written Press and political power during the 1956 - 1958 events that occurred in Haiti. This period, originating from President Magloire resignation in 1956 to François Duvalier's mandate conslodation in April 1958 is marked by strong political tensions. That begins with the struggles launched by President Magloire's supporters and opponents at the end of his presidential mandate. A period of instability followed Magloire departure with the succession of five governments in ten months. Besides, those two years are relevant to Haitian journalism , in a country where written Press finds its particularity from oldness and great frality. The consolidation of François Duvalier's regime goes with an offensive against written Press that reaches its climax at the end of April 1958, with the closing of Haiti-Miroir, the last journal of opposition. However, in this difficult situation, journals, by interfering with political struggles during this period, from 1956 to 1958, experienced an important downturn. They ceased to be the place of a single gouvernemental thought to reflect the plurality of coexisting trends of thoughts. Moreover, those journals were also used as a fouth power that tended to cling to actuality and gear the events, in a period stressed by confusion

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Journalism))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008.
The media plays a fundamental role in shaping societies’ opinions about topical issues. Most human beings depend upon either the print media (newspapers/magazines), television or radio as their sources of news. The advent of the internet since the 1990s revolutionised the media world and created an immediacy on the impact of news like no other previous medium could provide, as it had a combination of audio and visual material. The most effective demonstration of such immediacy would be that of the impact of the September 11 attacks in the USA in 2001. The aftermath of the media’s impact still resonates throughout the world today, especially its impact on those who follow the Islamic faith. This paper aims to explore the impact of the media on this newly derived concept of Islamophobia, especially post 9/11. It includes a case study of the Islamophobic Danish cartoon controversy that occurred in February 2006. This paper discusses the concept of Islamophobia and anti-Islamism, as well as how the events of 9/11 and its media coverage contributed towards the worsening of this sentiment across the globe. The conclusion reached is that instead of the media acting as a mediator between Western society and the global Muslim community and creating an atmosphere of each understanding the other, it acted negatively against Islam, the world’s fastest growing religion.

Tilbury, Simon John. "The dancer walking the ruins : Laura Riding and dialectical thought." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2019. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/290212.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the origin and expression of dialectical thought in the life and writings of the American modernist Laura Riding. Within a biographical framework, I trace the steps by which it became the defining characteristic of her poetic, literary and critical works. A few have noted Riding's dialectical manner; none have appreciated its centrality. This is the first detailed study. An introductory outline of the origin and definition of dialectic provides a working theoretical context for the study that follows. Riding was born Laura Reichenthal in New York City, 1901. Her father, a Jewish émigré, was a committed activist for the left and included Riding in his campaigning at a very young age, immersing and educating her in the political and philosophical radicalism thriving in New York's Jewish communities of the era. There she internalised the revolutionary dialectics that would inform her aesthetic practice. Breaking with her father in her teens, she abandoned politics for literature. As Laura Riding - the name she adopted in 1927 and with which her literary writings continue to be associated - she moved to London and began collaborating with Robert Graves, relocating with him to Majorca in 1929. Producing poetry, fiction, criticism and experimental philosophico-literary works, she became a formidable presence within European literary modernism. Many aspects of her work are dialectical. Paradox, inversion and negation are perennial textual features. Key events in her life were also experienced as dialectical. Her insistence upon 'death' as an inverted sigil of unmediated vitality points toward a negatively dialectical mode of thought. In this regard, the theories of Theodor W. Adorno prove invaluable. Adorno provides a unique lexicon of terms - 'constitutive subjectivity', 'administered world', 'true object' - with which to draw out Riding's dialectical subtleties. Reading them alongside Adorno's negatively dialectical theory of modernist art and aesthetic praxis, certain aspects of Riding's writings are illuminated and, in some respects, they correspond. After a suicide attempt in 1929, Riding's perspective changed. Before it, her point of view was positioned within institutionally determined 'reality', and 'truth' beyond it was adumbrated by dialectical means. Afterwards, she believed herself transfigured: the embodiment of immediate, consciously apprehended noumenal objectivity. But the written word remained recalcitrant toward her attempts to inscribe this newfound positive 'truth'. This frustration contributed to her abandonment of poetry at the end of the 1930s. Re-emerging in the 1960s as Laura (Riding) Jackson, her disavowal of poetry and exploration of 'truth-potential' in language utilised dialectical approaches derived from her earlier experiences and writings.

Latham, Jamie Marc. "The clergy and print in eighteenth-century England, c. 1714-1750." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/275032.

Full text
Abstract:
In much of the historiography surrounding print culture and the book trade, the worldliness of print remains a point of common emphasis. Indeed, many influential studies either assume or actively present the history of print as part of a broader ‘secularization thesis’. Recently, however, historians have challenged these narratives, recognizing the central role of religious print as a driver of growth within the book trade and discussion within the nascent ‘public sphere’. Yet the scholarship into ‘religion and the book’ remains fragmentary, focused on individual genres or persons, with no unified monograph or standard reference work yet to emerge. This dissertation addresses some of the barriers to synopsis by investigating the long-term print output of the largest social and professional group engaged in evangelizing Christianity to the public: the clergy of the Church of England. By focusing on the clergy, this dissertation evades the usual narrow focus on genre. In the past, book-historical and bibliographic studies have relied heavily on a priori classification schemes to study the market for print. While sufficient in the context of relatively well-defined genre categories, such as printed sermons, the validity of these classification schemes breaks down at the wider level, for example, under the conceptual burden of defining the highly fluid and wide-ranging category of ‘religious works’. This dissertation begins to remedy such problems by modelling the print output of a large population of authors who had the strongest stake in evangelizing Christianity to the public through print. It utilizes the latest techniques in the field of digital humanities and bibliometrics to create a representative sample of the print output of the Anglican clergy over the ‘long’ eighteenth-century (here 1660-1800). Based on statistical trends, the thesis identifies a crucial period in the history of clerical print culture, the first four decades of the Hanoverian regime. The period is explored in detail through three subsequent case studies. By combining both traditional and digital methods, therefore, the dissertation explores clerical publishing as a phenomenon subject to evolution and change at both the macro and micro level. The first chapter provides an overarching statistical study of clerical publishing between 1660 and 1800. By combining data from two bibliographical datasets, The English Short-Title Catalogue (ESTC), and the prosopographical resource, The Clergy of the Church of England Database (CCED), I extract and analyse a dataset of clerical works consisting of almost 35,000 bibliographic records. The remaining chapters approach the thesis topic through primary research-based case studies using both print and manuscript sources. The case studies were selected from the period identified in the preceding statistical analysis as a crucial transitional moment in the history of clerical publishing culture, c.1714 to 1750. These case studies form chapters 2, 3, and 4, each of which explore a different aspect of a network of authors who worked under the direction of the bishop of London, Edmund Gibson (1723-1748), during the era of Whig hegemony under Sir Robert Walpole. Finally, an appendix outlines the methodology used in chapter 1 to extract the sample of clerical printed works from the ESTC. Overall, the thesis demonstrates the profound influence of the clergy on the development of English print in the hand-press period. It thus forms both a historiographic intervention against the secularization thesis still implicit in discussions of print culture and the book trade, as well as providing a cautionary critique of the revisionism which has shaped recent investigations into the Church of England.

Doctoral thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.2/7981.

Abstract:
The frequency and magnitude of river basin floods are critical to the study of hydrological threats; consequently, it is fundamental for sustainable land use. It is common practice for researchers to use rainfall, runoff, and flood event references gathered from journals to reconstruct local history in a watercourse and river basin. This study investigates the historical records of floods in the River Vez basin (BHRVez) between 1900 and 2015. The main sources of information were: data from the Census of the National Statistics Institute; the daily values of the flow measured at the Celeiros Pontilhão hydrometric station, and the precipitation of the Casal Soeiro rain station for the period from 1959 to 1990, both located at BHRVez; the regional periodic press, specifically the journals from the region of Arcos de Valdevez; cartography from the Army Geospatial Information Center for geo-referencing "flood points". The municipality of Arcos de Valdevez occupies 247,16 km2 of a total of 262,03 km2 of BHRVez (the remaining area belongs to municipalities of Paredes de Coura, Ponte de Lima, Ponte da Barca, Monção and Melgago). This study took in account the flood history in the BHRVez. The records were built with information from the regional periodical press and they were validated against the flow (Q) and precipitation (P) data (percentile method P 90 and P 95). The value of the minimum Q calculated according to the P 90 method of the month of greatest flow (February), Q = 43,5 m3/s, was considered to be slightly higher than the P 95 of the whole series of values (40 m3 /s). Precipitation 𝑃 ≥ 38,6 𝑚𝑚 (higher than P 90) was considered as the lowest precipitation value for flooding events. These values were validated against the periodic press. It was applied 67 questionnaires corresponding to 3 % of the population of urban areas of eight parishes. The probability of floods/year for the BHRVez was determined by the Poisson distribution. The same distribution was applied for the urban area of Valeta, the most basin flooded area. Three models were developed to obtain hydrological flooding indicators determined by linear regression and valued by the Chi-square: the flood alert model based on the flow threshold data (Q ≥ 43,5 m3/s); the model of simplified flood physical susceptibility based on the hierarchical order of Strahler (1951) and the order of magnitude Shreve (1966); the model for determining the danger to floods; and the model of hydrological sustainability. It was found that parishes closer to the main channel of the Vez River were more affected according to the simplified susceptibility to floods and less sustainable. The mountain parishes showed the highest value. Flood alert, susceptibility, hazard and sustainability indicators, as well as the flood event database (eBd) are seen as crucial tools for decision-making.
