Abstract:
For almost a decade, George Eliot labored at a translation of seventeenth-century Jewish philosopher Baruch Spinoza'sTractatus Theologico-PoliticusandEthics, and although completed, it never saw the light of day; it was the subject of a petty fight between the proposed publisher, Henry Bohn, and her partner, George Henry Lewes. The result was that for more than a century it was tucked away, first, presumably, in a drawer, and eventually, in the Beinecke Library at Yale University. Although critics and scholars have long known that she had completed this work – references abound in letters and journal entries – it wasn't published until 1981, and even then, in an obscure imprint of the Salzburg University press. Copies of this published edition, which is limited to theEthicsand capably annotated by Thomas Deegan, are quite rare and difficult to get ahold of.

Abstract:
Abstract Three verses in the book of Daniel describe the Hellenistic world as divided into four segments (Dan 8:8, 22; 11:4). The history of interpretation of the book of Daniel displays a remarkable readiness, even among critical scholars, to take this scheme literally and to press Hellenistic history into the mold supplied by Daniel’s apocalyptic visions. Daniel commentators agree, for instance, in understanding the four new horns of the goat in Dan 8 as representative of the Diadochi, the successors of Alexander the Great in the late fourth century BCE, but they disagree on precisely which Diadochi the apocalyptic seer had in mind. An examination of our classical sources for early Hellenistic history, particularly the most detailed source, Diodorus Siculus, demonstrates the near futility of trying to identify precisely four parts of the post-Alexander Macedonian Empire. In the present article, I find a symbolic interpretation of the number four to be the most satisfying, but I also make some suggestions for how to understand the number literally as a representation of the Hellenistic world. Nevertheless, commentators taking the number “four” in Dan 8:8, 22; 11:4 as a straightforward and simple reference to a historical reality have underestimated the chaos of the decades following Alexander’s death.

The first edition of Daniel McFarland's Historical dictionary of Upper Volta (Metuchen, N.J. and London, Scarecrow Press, 1978. 217 pp.) was published in 1978. From that time until the early 1990s, McFarland updated many of the entries and collected new materials. Dut to family health considerations he felt unable to complete the second edition. I agreed to undertake that project in 1995 with complete access to his collected material. That volume was published in 1998: Daniel Miles McFarland and Lawrence A. Rupley Historical dictionary of Burkina Faso [fomer Upper Volta (Haute Volta)] 2nd ed. Lanham, MD, Scarecrow Press, 1998. Ixxvii, 279 pp. This article is an outgrowth of that work. Following some general background on the country, this article reviews a sampling of the published literature concerning Upper Volta/Burkina Faso. This reply to the critiques by Daniel Woolf, Cass R. Sunstein and Daniel Nolan of my book Altered Pasts: Counterfactuals in History (Brandeis University Press, 2013), takes each of their contributions in turn, and reasserts the centrality to counterfactual history of positing definite, long term alternative timelines rather than a vague claim that things might have turned out differently to the way they actually did (for example, if the Confederacy had won the Civil War, slavery might still exist in the usa). Such alternate timelines have no claim to either truth or utility since they ignore the many possible contingencies that would most likely have taken place following the initial deviation from the real timeline of history.

Abstract:
Modern UK welfare reforms, such as employment and support allowance (ESA), aim to provide financial support to individuals unable to work due to disability or chronic health conditions. As part of a media framing analysis, which explores the ways in which these welfare reforms have been reported by the UK press, Ken Loach’s 2016 film I, Daniel Blake was identified by the research team as an important discursive resource. Through a novel multimodal discourse analysis (which contains spoilers for the film), we examine the ‘immaculate construction’ of fictional ESA claimant Daniel Blake and consider the implications for ‘real life’ ESA claimants. We suggest that, whilst presenting a compassionate narrative which highlights the dehumanisation experienced by ESA claimants, the film raises questions that may further problematise notions of who (and who is not) able to be considered as ‘genuinely’ deserving of welfare.

This article arose from the author's review of Daniel Albright's recent study Untwisting the Serpent – Modernism in Music, Literature and Other Arts (Chicago and London: The University of Chicago Press). The review, now published in the Spring 2001 Issue of the Kurt Weill Newsletter (vol 19, no. 1), concentrates on Schoenberg and Weill, while the article explores other aspects of Modernism considered by Albright. Tempo's own formal review of Untwisting the Serpent is contributed by Peter Quinn on p. 00 – Ed.).
