Abstract:
The volume focuses on the transcription of the unpublished letters of Daniello Berlinghieri to Anna Martini during Berlinghieri’s mission to the Congress of Vienna for the Order of Malta. The critical apparatus aims to reconstruct the stages of the journey on a documentary basis, and contextualize characters and events evoked from a biographical, literary and historical-cultural standpoint, including them into the Microhistory and Macrohistory of which they were the protagonists. The epistolary is translated here in French.

Kirschner, Martin, ed. Subversiver Messianismus. Academia – ein Verlag in der Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5771/9783896658623.

Full text
Abstract:
The same world - and yet everything is different. This could be a succinct formula for what the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben seeks to expose in his studies: categories of a new way of thinking, of a different use and form-of-life, in which natural life cannot be separated from social life and in which the logic of exclusion and the violence of domination are suspended. Starting from the last volume of the Homo-Sacer project, the studies in this volume trace Agamben's search for a "destituent potential" that opens a way out of the state of exception we are living in. Such a "subversive messianism" moves between politics and theology, ontology and poetry; it works archaeologically through the Greek and Roman, Jewish and Christian roots of Western culture in order to open them up to a new use in surprising constellations. Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The fight against international terrorism has been a central focus of European security policy for over fifteen years. However, this raises the question of whether the large number of security measures and laws adopted at various political levels meet the required standards of effectiveness and proportionality. This volume offers a critical review of this policy area. In it, Raphael Bossong gives an overview of the strategic trends in EU anti-terrorism policy since 2015, while Oldrich Bures evaluates European measures to control so-called foreign fighters. Martin Kahl develops a fundamental critique of the effectiveness of the EU’s fight against terrorism. Tim Krieger and Daniel Meierrieks condense the economic debate on the cost and impact assessment of terrorism. Anja Jacobi and Janina Kandt analyse transnational governance to curb the financing of terrorism. Abstract:
Chapter 2.3 analyses the English school of Montaigne in the context of the relationship between Renaissance education and the early modern nobility. The Englished Montaigne––translated by John Florio and dramatized by Samuel Daniel, Ben Jonson, John Marston, and others––was introduced as a critic of the tyranny of custom and as a participant in the aristocratic culture of private learning in the late Elizabethan, early Jacobean noble household. Documents discussed range from the paratexts to Florio’s translation and the English text of ‘Of the institution and education of children’ to James Cleland’s work on the same subject and the famous portrait of Lady Anne Clifford. The chapter ends by offering a new perspective on Shakespeare’s use of Florio’s translation in The Tempest: that we should understand it in relation to Samuel Daniel’s use of similar passages in a play staged for the 1605 royal progress to the University of Oxford: The Queenes Arcadia.

Abstract:
Abstract:
The intensively discussed term transformation refers to the comprehensive restructuring of processes and behaviour in order to address societal challenges posed by far-reaching changes in energy, transport, production and agricultural systems. Since such complex transformations are always accompanied by uncertainties about their effects and consequences, the contributions in this volume critically examine the opportunities and risks involved in these processes and discuss the possibilities and limits of technology assessment in the context of societal transformations. The volume brings together the academic contributions to the 8th international conference of the Technology Assessment Network, which took place in Karlsruhe from 7th to 8th November 2018. Full text
Abstract:
The history of hermeneutics is a conversation about knowledge. ‘Hermeneutics: a brief history’ begins with knowledge in the ancient world, where not only mathematics and logic, but also poetry, rhetoric, and philosophy were counted as important sources of objective truth. This view of knowledge changed from the 14th century onwards. The ancients asked how knowledge could enable a virtuous life; moderns focus more on the epistemological question: ‘how we can know that something is true?’ But whose interpretation of truth was the right one? The thinking of René Descartes, Daniel Friedrich Schleiermacher, Wilhelm Dilthey, Edmund Husserl, and Martin Heidegger is explained before considering hermeneutics after Heidegger.

Abstract:
The Weimar Constitution marked Germany’s first sortie into democracy, with the Republic intended to be democratic, humane and constitutional and based on the principle of popular sovereignty. However, its election system of proportional representation favoured small parties and impeded the formation of a government, with its final governments being presidential cabinets. Constitutions are often analysed by various academic fields. While philosophy and historiography set the framework for this analysis, constitutional law may be regarded as the principal discipline in this regard. The social sciences are first and foremost concerned with constitutional reality, and there is indeed strong evidence that it was the Weimar Republic’s lack of socio-economic foundations that ultimately caused its demise. This volume is divided into twelve parts (perspectives) and will appeal to readers interested in politics, law, (contemporary) history, sociology and philosophy. With contributions by Stefan Bajohr, Wolfgang Bergem, Sabine Berghahn, Ursula Büttner, Norbert Campagna, Wolfgang Elz, Heiner Fechner, Helmut Gebhardt, Michael Geistlinger, Christoph Gusy, Volker Haug, Franz Hederer, Tobias Herbst, Peter Hilpold, Marcus Höreth, Ernst-Ulrich Huster, Eckhard Jesse, Herbert Kalb, Daniel-Erasmus Khan, Franz Kohout, Skadi Siiri Krause, Volker Kruse, Stefan Kutzner, Hans-Joachim Lauth, Oliver Lembcke, Matthias Lemke, Thomas Leuerer, Josef Marko, Reinhard Mehring, Martin H.W. Abstract:
Industry 4.0 and digitalisation are current developments that are having a strong impact on the world of work and our society. However, their consequences are still relatively unclear. A look at four economically strong European countries (Germany, Italy, Sweden and Spain) shows that technological and economic developments as well as expectations are debated differently. This book is separated into four sections. Its first part provides an overview of the scope and effects of digitalisation. Its second and third parts focus on reports and results from the four countries mentioned above. These are based on expert discussions and a Delphi online survey conducted in three waves which asked questions on and developed future scenarios. The book’s final part deals with possible courses of action at the workplace and in politics. The articles this book contains are written in German or English and are complemented with summaries in German, English, Italian and Spanish. With contributions by Krister Andersson, Prof. Dr. Daniel Buhr, Dagmar Bürkardt, Sonia Cattaneo, Massimo Darchini, Laura Diéguez Ferrer, Bernd Dworschak, Dr. Miriam Ferrari, Dan Gabrielsson, Daniel Garrell Ballester, Karl-Ulrich Gscheidle, Anneke Ilsemann, Kent Kling, Dr. Harald Kohler, Norbert Kreuzkamp, Martin Kunzmann, Luis Lageder, Dr. Luca Lombi, Dr. Erika Mezger, Dr. Raphael Menez, Prof. Dr. Josef Schmid, Welf Schröter, Heinrich Tiemann.

Abstract:
This special edition of ‘WSI-Mitteilungen’, the academic journal of the Institute of Economic and Social Research (WSI), focuses on the state of labour relations in Germany. The system of German industrial relations aroused lively interest following the corporatist crisis management of 2009/2010, which was credited with ‘Germany’s jobs miracle’. In 2019, it is apparent that although works councils and multi-employer collective bargaining—the core institutional pillars which shape the dual system of German industrial relations—are still alive, labour relations as a whole are undergoing substantial changes. It is the aim of this special issue to contribute to improving our understanding of these changes, and also to open up new perspectives on both the theory and practice of industrial relations. With contributions by Nadine Absenger, Martin Behrens, Wolfram Brehmer, Heiner Dribbusch, Helge Emmler, Anke Hassel, Wolfgang Schroeder, Thorsten Schulten and Daniel Seikel.

Abstract:
How can the new dynamic in European integration politics during the second half of the 1980’s be explained? What were the driving forces behind the Single European Act, the achievement of the Single Market, the Schengen agreement, the EC’s expansion to the south, and the new steps towards Monetary Union and the Common Foreign and Security Policy? In this book, using numerous discoveries from the archives, historians from 12 countries show how the European Community reacted to the challenges of globalisation and the reform initiatives by Mikhail Gorbachev. In doing so, they write a new chapter in the history of European integration: the emergence of the European Union. Abstract:
Abstract:
Well-being is a core concept for measuring the satisfaction of citizens with and in their social, political and economic situations. In particular, it is local conditions that are decisive for such an evaluation—and thus also for local welfare production. In addition to municipalities as state authorities, initiatives, non-commercial organisations, associations and federations are also decisive as important welfare producers. From a comparative perspective, the contributions in this volume shed light on various aspects and dimensions of local welfare production and their effects on citizens’ satisfaction. They examine examples from Russia and Germany, in particular the two cities Petrozavodsk and Tübingen as well as the Republic of Karelia and Baden-Württemberg: the theoretical foundations and social challenges, their attitudes and populations, participatory projects and measures of welfare production. With contributions by Daniel Buhr, Elena Chernenkova, Ksenija Chumak, Elizaveta Dibtceva, Kirill Fitisov, Rolf Frankenberger, Christopher Gohl, Stewart Gold, Polina Kopteva, Alisa Kruglova, Natalja Lavrushina, Irina Miljukova, Yuliya Petrovskaya, Maria Pitukhina, Denis Sachuk, Anni Schlumberger, Martin Seeleib-Kaiser, Ekaterina Shestakova, Ekaterina Shlapeko, Anna Simakova, Isabel Sinner, Irina Stepus, Carmen Thamm, Anatoly Tsygankov

Abstract:
Abstract:
Constructivist norm research is a lively and growing research programme in the field of international relations. Unsurprisingly, its increasing differentiation over the last three decades has raised questions about the ability to communicate across different academic camps. This edited volume enables dialogue by identifying commonalities and differences among academic camps from a metatheoretical perspective. The authors theoretically and empirically highlight new paths for critical norm research, foregrounding reflexivity and contingency, and critically discussing key concepts such as contestation, intersubjectivity and normativity. In this way, they reveal new paths towards critical norm research in this field. With contributions by Stephan Engelkamp, Sassan Gholiagha, Katharina Glaab, Antonia Graf, Hannes Hansen-Magnusson, Eva Herschinger, Maren Hofius, Daniel Jacobi, Kai Koddenbrock, Friederike Kuntz, Bastian Loges, Holger Niemann, Judith Renner, Frank Sauer, Henrik Schillinger, Linda Wallbott and Lisbeth Zimmermann.
