Tarvet, Ruairidh Thomas. "Re-imagining Sleswig : language and identity in the German-Danish borderlands : understanding the regional, national and transnational dimensions of minority identity." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/33174.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the interplay between regional, national and transnational dimensions of identity and language in the Danish and, to a lesser extent, the German minority communities of Sleswig. It also investigates the relationship between subjective and objective interpretations of minority membership. Obtaining data from a survey study carried out on 208 individuals from the Sleswigian minorities, this thesis maps out the composition of minority identity in the 21st century, whilst also using historical evidence as an explanation for the findings. The study shows that the minorities function as two closely-linked and supplementary groups to the national majorities. German language dominates most spheres in both minorities, yet bilingualism and code-switching are essential to minority life and defining group identity. Furthermore, whilst national identities are of a lesser importance to the minorities today than regional or transnational identities, minority identity is still nonetheless hybridised from its roots in the national cultures and languages of Denmark and Germany. The minorities are thus able to "cherry-pick" social, economic, political and linguistic capital from both nations. I argue that although minority identity and language are constantly under negotiation, legitimising a claim to minority identity by way of subjective will is nevertheless juxtaposed with meeting certain objective criteria expected by members of the communities, such as bilingualism, ancestral and geographical links to the region, an understanding of regional history and shared political beliefs. The study seeks originality by mapping the interaction between the regional, national and transnational dimensions of identity in the Danish and German minorities and by examining the influence of social media on identity expression in Sleswig. It also provides a fresh critical understanding of the impact of language on minority identity formation across recent generations in Sleswig. Finally, the thesis proposes a theoretical framework for the study of hybrid and dual minority identities, rooted in theories from nationalism studies, sociology, anthropology and sociolinguistics.

Abstract:
A metodologia adotada seguirá as análises quantitativas. E para todos os conjuntos de dados gerados será apresentado dois modelos, um modelo de efeitos fixos e um modelo de efeitos mistos, das variáveis estatísticas que melhor explica a variância.<br>This research has as its main goal to observe how do six plosive consonants: (p), (b), (t), (d), (k), (g), and three fricatives: (f), (v) e (r), of the Danish language behave in spontaneous speech data, relating with different kinds of linguistic variables that could have an effect on their variation. Moreover in this work, two main analyzes will be carried out. The first one will compare phonological forms and phonetic forms of occurrence. This first analysis will be divided into three sub parts, the first part will treat the monologue data set, the second part will treat the dialogue data set and the third part will treat the data set of the variable (r) and its deletions. In the second analysis, the treatments will be with strictly phonetic data set, and it will counts only with observations of the behavior of the six plosive consonants. The Danish phonological system, its segmental and suprasegmental characteristics, and the historical and social course of changes in language will be described, to give the reader an introduction to the studies of the Danish language. A description of the concept of lenition will also be presented along with its historical path. This helped to improve the selection of data to be analyzed. The methodology is based on quantitative analyses. Finally, for all the groups generated at the selection step, it will be presented two statistical models; one of fixed effects and one of mixed effects, of variables that could better explain the variance at the data.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates different sorts of repetition in the text ”Watersteps” and the four central lyrical works of the Danish poet Inger Christensen (1935–2009), it, Letter in April, alphabet and Butterfly Valley. The poems are analysed through close reading against a backdrop of the philosophical investigations of repetition by Søren Kierkegaard, Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida as well as the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and the lifeworld philosophy of the late Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. Inger Christensen is known for constructing different systems as framework for her texts. Repetition is a dominant element in these systems, and in her texts repetition is pervading  in her prose as well as in her poetry. The repetitions have important functions structuring the texts and creating new meanings. Using a term of Novalis you could say that they function as tools of a writer who is ”inspired by language” (”ein Sprachbrgeisterter”). The repetitions are literal (or just slightly changed) and thematical. They are nearly always not just a repetition of a former expression or theme. The investigation shows that something new is produced in the process of repeating. While repetition pushes expressions and themes forward in the texts, the signification and meaning of these are changed at the same time. The process often includes displacement and condensation supplying the text with never ending possibilities of creating new relations and new meanings. The combination of system, repetition, and the meaning of the text shows the relationship between subject, world and language. They are independent phenomena at the same time as they are deeply involved in each other. The constant interaction and the tension between them are demonstrated in the texts both formally and semantically. Reality is suspended between them in eternal mobility; identity becomes relative. The living subject is defining and redefining itself by being part of the world mediated to it through language, and these two are in turn constantly redefined in the process of repetition. In this way the subject, and certainly the poet subject, is always expressing the world or, in reversed order, the world expresses itself through the subject.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates how refugees experience their participation in civil society organizations and how such participation affects their social integration. Focusing on the experiences of refugees from a community center in Denmark, this qualitative study explores what resources refugees gain from civil society activities and whether these gains affect their social relationships within the host society. Data collected via seven semi-structured interviews and observations is analyzed using the concepts of social capital, human capital and social integration. The findings demonstrate that resources gained through civil society participation pave the way for socialization opportunities between refugees and communities in the host society, thus, enhance social integration. Social resources such as social networks, mental support and civic values, as well as human capital gains in the form of language skills and information foster refugees’ social integration. The study demonstrates that social capital, human capital and social integration are interconnected, as social and human capital affect each other’s accumulation and eventually contribute to social integration. Another significant finding is that refugees think integration needs to be a mutual process between newcomers and the native population. The study further indicates the importance refugees attach to language as an essential tool for social integration.

Abstract:
<p>On the annexation of Jämtland by Sweden in 1645, Danish clergymen were allowed to remain on condition that they officiated in the Swedish language.</p><p>This dissertation investigates the changes in the written language of one of these Danish clergymen and is based on the parish register kept by the Rev. Olof Bertilsson between 1636 and 1668. The premise for this study is that individual variations and alterations in written language do not occur arbitrarily, but display systematisation and express social consensus. The analytical basis for this approach is derived from Alexander Zheltukhin’s work on orthographic code theory and employs concepts used in sociolinguistics, but also borrows ideas from theories of mixed languages and second-language learning.</p><p>Between 1636 and 1646 Olof Bertilsson displays a highly stable orthographic code with few variations. Following his attendance at the Riksdag (the Swedish Parlament) in Stockholm in 1647, a distinct change is evident in his orthography. Changes occur quite early in the spelling of some place-names, personal names and important and frequent ecclesiastical terms.</p><p>A decisive factor in determining when and how change occurs is his access to examples of Swedish texts. In the last decade of his life, an influx of Swedish clergy, increased contacts with Swedish officials and help from young clergymen with a Swedish education, contribute to a predominance of Swedish forms in Olof Bertilsson’s individual orthographic code.</p>

Pecikoza, Sanjin. "Are Nordic students prepared foruniversity courses taught in English? : Comparing the Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish pre-university English language syllabuses with international requirements for university entry." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för språk (SPR), 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-53855.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to globalization and the importance of having a single lingua franca in academia, the number of international university courses taught in English—so called English medium instruction (EMI) has been steadily increasing. All students, national and international, are required to pass a certain linguistic threshold in order to be able to apply for a university program. Concerning Nordic universities, international students are required to take one of many international proficiency tests, such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Test System (IELTS) in order to prove their English language competence. On the other hand, for Nordic students there is no such test, instead Nordic pre-university English syllabuses are assumed to meet the demands of English proficiency as set by the universities. There is some research that suggests that Nordic students are able to fully cope with EMI in higher education—in some cases, at the same level of proficiency as native-speakers. However, other research suggests that Nordic students are unable to cope with EMI due to insufficient academic language competence. Given this uncertainty regarding Nordic students' readiness for EMI, this study sets out to investigate the extent to which students are prepared for coping with EMI at a university level. This is achieved by analyzing the Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish pre-university English language syllabuses in terms of Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) skills. By applying the same interpretive method used for Nordic syllabuses to international tests, and comparing the two sets of findings to the Common European Framework, this study is also able to highlight the extent of which Nordic syllabuses are able to prepare its students. Findings suggest that Nordic countries vary in how well they prepare students and what skills are taught in upper secondary school. Also, the study was able to highlight similarities and differences between the language competences referenced by the domestic syllabuses and those expected of international students.

Lindmark, Carolina. "Nouns on fire in Mainland Scandinavian : A lexico-typological study of selected nouns referring to FIRE in Danish, Norwegian (Bokmål) and Swedish." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Institutionen för lingvistik, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-148449.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study investigates the use of a selected group of nouns in the domain of FIRE in written Mainland Scandinavian languages, i.e. Danish, Norwegian (bokmål) and Swedish. The main goal is to capture the semantic features of the nouns by examining typical situations where they occur, following the frame-method for lexical studies by Rakhilina &amp; Reznikova (2016). The nouns are examined in terms of their combinatorial patterning in compounds with other nouns, in trigrams and in figurative use. The synchronic data is drawn from corpora, lexica and first speaker intuition. Four parameters are formulated, which seem to play a role in the lexical use among the fire words, in the three languages. The nouns are structured according to the parameters and each lexeme displays combinatorial pattern revealing semantic restrictions. The selected ‘fire nouns’ are fairly similar, but differ in terms of semantic load most prominently among the lexemes that refer to controllable fires. The lexemes relevant for the parameter of ‘subcomponents of fire processes’ display an asymmetry, which needs to be studied further. The scope of the current study also includes two lexemes in Swedish that semantically have not been possible to disentangle. On the whole, at least the controllability of the fire is lexically encoded, possibly because that property is crucial for survival.

Hultgren, Anna Kristina. "Linguistic regulation and interactional reality : a sociolinguistic study of call centre service transactions." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2008. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:9ca16ff8-8975-4e25-9193-06016aa2b503.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to contribute to the study of workplace talk, language and gender, and the sociolinguistics of globalization by exploring the phenomenon of ‘linguistic regulation’ in call centres. ‘Linguistic regulation’ refers to the practice, now widespread in the globalized service economy, of codifying and enforcing rules for employees’ use of language in service interactions with customers. Drawing on authentic service interactions from call centres in the UK and Denmark, and interviews and communication material from both those countries as well as Hong Kong and the Philippines, this study shows that linguistic regulation exerts a significant influence on the language used by call centre agents, and suggests that this has implications for all three areas of inquiry. In relation to the study of workplace talk, the findings raise questions about the degree of local management and individual speaker agency that has often been asserted in previous work. In the area of language and gender studies, the finding that female speakers in both countries show a higher degree of compliance with linguistic regulation than male ones is related to ongoing debates about the local variability of gender. It is argued that the field may benefit from supplementing the currently favoured locally-based methods with one which seeks to link linguistic behaviour with supra-local systems of inequality. Finally, in relation to the sociolinguistics of globalization, this thesis documents the existence of a distinct, globally prescribed, call centre style which is culturally marked as North-American. In practice, this style is locally inflected, with British agents exhibiting greater conformity to the prescriptions than their Danish counterparts. It is argued that this may be because the prescribed style conflicts with the Danish cultural preference for ‘getting to the point’. These findings highlight the importance of considering language in the context of a global system. The thesis concludes by considering what the research it is based on may contribute, not only to academic debates in sociolinguistics and the sociology of work, but also to professional discussions within the call centre industry.

Abstract:
Det land vars styrdokument förhåller sig längst ifrån deklarationen är Sverige.<br>Within the Nordic countries, there is a cooperation and a political investment in strengthening the teaching of neighbouring languages in school. This is shown by agreements such as the Declaration on a Nordic Language Policy. How is the declaration carried out within the Nordic countries? This study aims to examine the relations between the Declaration on a Nordic Language Policy and the curriculums in the Scandinavian schools. Do the aims and requirements in the curriculums agree with the aims of the declaration? To examine this, analyses of the documents were carried out as well as qualitative interviews with three experts from the three Scandinavian countries; Anna Hannesdóttir, Heidi Lønne Grønseth and Lis Madsen. The results show a quite considerable discrepancy between the curriculums and the declaration, but also a difference between the countries. The Danish curriculum is the one that mirrors the Declaration on a Nordic Language Policy the closest. The country whose curriculum mirrors the declaration the least, is Sweden.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with what happens linguistically and interactionally in naturally occurring bilingual talk-in-interaction between Danes and Swedes. In the data – collected within the elderly care in a Danish municipality – three Swedish caregivers interact with Danish pensioners and colleagues. Previous research on inter-Scandinavian interaction has mostly been concerned with talk-in-interaction in arranged situations and/or situations where the participants do not interact regularly with other Scandinavians. The talk-in-interaction in the present data, however, has a clear activity context, and the participants are used to talking to people speaking the neighbour language. The aim of this study was to examine how comprehension, understanding and social affiliation were achieved and demonstrated across differences in language, age, nationality and institutional roles. The theoretical and methodological framework includes accommodation theory and conversation analysis. The linguistic aspects of the Swedish speakers’ accommodation to Danish were studied both in a detailed analysis of accommodation on five linguistic levels, and quantitatively in a study of five linguistic variables. One result was that the Swedish caregivers had individual ways of accommodating their language to Danish. The linguistic analyses also indicated that one reason for this accommodation was to make communication flow more efficiently. A CA-study of other-initiated repair showed that four factors in the interactional situation influenced understanding: context, physical distance and orientation, clearness of speech, and neighbour language and accommodation. It could, however, not be shown that the speakers’ use of different linguistic varieties caused a significant number of problems in understanding, or that the participants frequently oriented to such linguistic differences as part of the problem. Compliment sequences and their role in creating social affiliation were studied in another CA-study. They often played the role of introducing a new topic and leading the talk away from the practical chores at hand, thereby reducing the institutional aspect of the situation. The interactional ways of creating comprehension, understanding and social affiliation are likely to be at least as important as linguistic convergence in achieving these goals.

Abstract:

Pelegri, Kristic Andrea Paz. Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/20487.

Full text
Abstract:
The present research complements a Spanish translation of an excerpt of Daniel Danis’ Le Chant du Dire-Dire (Song of the Say-Sayer) for a future production by the theatre company Tiatro in Santiago de Chile. The methodology is based on Vermeer’s skopos theory (1978), a functionalist approach to translation. This theory considers every translation an independent communicational act, different from the one established by the source text since it is destined to a different socio-cultural system and thus, different users. As such, it is necessary to adapt the source text system to these new parameters when defining the translation “project”. This functionalist approach puts into question some of the best known concepts advanced in theatre translation during the past twenty years, such as “playability”, “performability” or “theatricality”. They prove too vague and do not take into considering the aesthetic specificities of each play or the context to which they are destined. The parameters of the skopos, in the present case, that of a translation intended to be performed in front of a Chilean audience, is based on a detailed analysis of Danis’ play. This analysis defines the unique attributes of the text, specifically in regards to the use of language. The research also examines the relationship between the play’s language and the “époque du joual” (1960-1970’s) in québécois theatre, as well as its rapport with québécois vernaculars, insofar as they are key in the articulation of the playwright’s dramaturgical project. The analysis of the play is followed by an annotated translation of the “dire” entitled Les traces du chaos dans la maison Durant (Traces of chaos in the Lasting home). This translation, presented in a bilingual format, provides commentary explaining the different problems encountered during the process as well as the micro-structural adaptations proposed according to the pre-established skopos.

Abstract:
The dissertation investigates definiteness marking in two typologically diverse languages — Lithuanian which is an articleless language and has a partially grammaticalized marking of definiteness and Danish which has a fully developed system of definiteness markers. The aim of the thesis is to compare Lithuanian definiteness markers — definite adjectival forms and emergent articles — to definiteness markers of article languages (Danish, English, etc.). The following methods of analysis were applied in the dissertation: contrastive analysis, L. Hjelmslev’s commutation test and semantic map method. Besides the contrastive perspective, the dissertation also has a typological perspective with the aim of determining the universal usage types of definiteness markers and considering definiteness marking in Lithuanian and Danish in a typological context. The Semantic Map of Lithuanian Definite Adjectivals and the Semantic Map of Definiteness Markers in Danish, which were drawn in the thesis, help to highlight the similarities and differences of definiteness marking in Lithuanian and Danish. In the dissertation, it is argued that the pronominal morpheme –jis, –ji contained in the definite adjectival form can be regarded as a formal marker of definiteness in Lithuanian since in all cases this morpheme marks the definiteness of a noun phrase, whether it is definiteness on the level of individual reference or definiteness on the level of type (taxonomic) reference. Abstract:
Speech technologies such as text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) and automatic speech recognition (ASR) have recently generated much interest in the developed world as a user-interface medium to smartphones [1, 2]. However, it is also recognised that these technologies may potentially have a positive impact on the lives of those in the developing world, especially in Africa, by presenting an important medium for access to information where illiteracy and a lack of infrastructure play a limiting role [3, 4, 5, 6]. While these technologies continually experience important advances that keep extending their applicability to new and under-resourced languages, one particular area in need of further development is speech synthesis of African tone languages [7, 8]. The main objective of this work is acoustic modelling and synthesis of tone for an African tone, language: Yorùbá. We present an empirical investigation to establish the acoustic properties of tone in Yorùbá, and to evaluate resulting models integrated into a Hidden Markov model-based (HMMbased) TTS system. We show that in Yorùbá, which is considered a register tone language, the realisation of tone is not solely determined by pitch levels, but also inter-syllable and intra-syllable pitch dynamics. Furthermore, our experimental results indicate that utterance-wide pitch patterns are not only a result of cumulative local pitch changes (terracing), but do contain a significant gradual declination component. Lastly, models based on inter- and intra-syllable pitch dynamics using underlying linear pitch targets are shown to be relatively efficient and perceptually preferable to the current standard approach in statistical parametric speech synthesis employing HMM pitch models based on context-dependent phones. These findings support the applicability of the proposed models in under-resourced conditions.<br>PhD (Information Technology), North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2014

Abstract:
The study investigates to what extent the Scandinavian translators use the same methods when translating. The Danish, Norwegian and Swedish translations of the French novel L’élégance du hérisson are analyzed using Vinay and Darbelnet’s (1958/1977) methodology. In the present study the translators are also questioned about so called situational factors that might have influenced the translation process and its outcome. There is a major focus on the methods that are characterized by indirect translation, since these in a clear way indicate differences. Results show that the translators use the same methods in 42 % of the cases in the analyzed material. Results also show that the indirect translation methods are widely used in the Danish target text and it hence also distances itself the farthest from the source text, whereas the Norwegian target text is rich in litteral translation and closest to the source text.

Ochsenbauer, Anne-Katharina. "The impact of language-specific factors in first language acquisition : the expression of motion in French and German." Paris 8, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010PA083258.

Abstract:
Typological approaches show striking differences in the morphosyntax and semantics of the language of motion that have implications for language acquisition presently examined in psycholinguistic research. This thesis examines the expression of voluntary and caused motion events by German and French children and adults. The results concerning the adults clearly show the expected typological patterns in these two language types (satellite- vs. Verb-framed). In German, semantic components (CAUSE, MANNER and PATH) are systematically expressed in compact structures. In French, however, lexicalization patterns vary strongly because the simultaneous expression of multiple semantic components requires subordinate elements such as gerunds. From a developmental point of view, children follow the same patterns: German children from six years on use compact syntactic patterns typical of their mother tongue enabling them to encode most of the time all necessary semantic components; in contrast, French children up to ten years express less information because they have difficulties producing the complex structures that are necessary to encode multiple semantic components.

Full text
Abstract:
The author of nine volumes of poetry and numerous other writings, the editor of several literary journals, the recipient of copious awards, including the James Still Award from the Fellowship of Southern Writers, and a longtime teacher and mentor, East Tennessee native Jeff Daniel Marion has come to be known as one of the most significant and beloved voices in Appalachian literature over the past four decades. The twenty-one pieces in this illuminating collection range from examinations of Marion’s poetry to considerations of his teaching career and influence on students, writers, and artists throughout the region and beyond. Acclaimed poet, novelist, and historian Robert Morgan writes about how Marion affected his development as a writer and the key role Marion has played in bringing Appalachian literature into its own. Scholar Randall Wilhelm’s essay, meanwhile, expands our appreciation for Marion not only as a poet but as a visual artist, tracing the connection between his photography and poetic imagery. Also included are essays by John Lang on the ways in which Marion’s poetry “gives voice to a spiritual vision of nature’s sacramental identity,” Gina Herring on how the poet’s father has served as his muse, and George Ella Lyon on the power of story in Marion’s picture book for children, Hello, Crow. Other features include an autobiographical essay by Marion himself, an interview conducted by co-editor Jesse Graves, and a bibliography and timeline that summarize Marion’s life and career. In the book’s introduction, Ernest Lee notes that in the poem “Boundaries,” from his first published collection, the young Marion “dedicated himself to his place, to the land and his heritage . . . welcoming whatever may come with a firm faith that ultimately his life as a poetic laborer will bring him to a true, sharp vision.” The eloquent contributions to this volume reveal just how fully that dedication has paid off.<br>https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/1020/thumbnail.jpg

Abstract:
This thesis examines the efforts necessary to mask and the aftermath in doing so as illustrated in Daniel Black’s Perfect Peace and Obery Hendricks’s Living Water. The focus of this study is to explore how Black and Hendricks demonstration of Dunbar’s concept of masking evolves from societal oppression. The environment and social constructions within the two novels centralizes the cause to wear the mask. The female characters discussed in this paper tacitly agree with their oppressors to at least pretend to submit to their own oppression. Black and Hendricks develop female characters that emerge from their oppression and achieve self-assertion. The female characters redefine and redeem themselves through unconventional concepts of heroism.

Sakakibara, Maki. "Phonological Awareness Development in Bilingual Children : How do Swedish/Danish-Japanese bilingual children develop Japanese phonological awareness in comparison with Japanese children?" Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Centrum för tvåspråkighetsforskning, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-127081.

Full text
Abstract:
The phonological awareness development of bilingual children has been discussed from the viewpoint of whether they have an advantage compared to monolingual children. Some previous studies discovered that there were language pairs where bilingual children could have no advantage in it. However, it has not been clarified yet how bilingual children with such a language pair develop phonological awareness. The purpose of this study was to give an example of such a language pair and analyze bilingual children’s phonological awareness development in comparison with that of monolingual children.      This study examined how 3- to 7-year-old Swedish/Danish-Japanese bilingual children developed Japanese phonological awareness in comparison with the corresponding Japanese children. Forty-five children (26 bilingual children and 19 Japanese children) participated in this study. The bilingual children lived in Sweden or Denmark and had Swedish or Danish as their strong language in general but they also spoke Japanese on a daily basis. On the other hand, the Japanese children used exclusively Japanese at home as their sole first language. The children were individually tested on two types of Japanese syllables (fundamental syllables and special syllables). The fundamental syllable section had three types of tasks (segmentation task, abstraction task and identification task) and the special syllable section had one type of task (segmentation task).      The results showed no advantage for the bilingual children in Japanese phonological awareness development in comparison with the Japanese children. While the bilingual children developed Japanese phonological awareness with age and/or letter knowledge in the same way as the Japanese children, their developmental rate was generally slower than that of the Japanese children. Two factors appear to play a part in this finding: first, the fact that Swedish and Danish are phonologically different from Japanese so knowledge of these languages did not help the children to discover Japanese phonological structure. Second, the amount of exposure to Japanese for bilingual children was significantly less even though they spoke and understood the language well. Thus, this study suggests that bilingual children can have difficulty with regard to phonological awareness development in one of their languages when the other language is not conducive to the discovery of this language’s phonological structure and when exposure to this language is limited, even if they speak and understand the language well.

While authors have appropriated literary works for centuries, they have also appropriated historical settings and places well outside their own realities, creating new works in historical settings that reflect a new cultural purpose. The Restoration and eighteenth century are frequent subjects of popular formula-fiction romances due to the distinctive, easily replicated atmospheres; but the period has also inspired serious, traditional historical fiction and fictionalized biography as well as productions of novels from the period. Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the characteristics of the theatre of the world metaphor, as they appear in several contemporary french-speaking plays. Seven plays have been selected as images of the world, since they summon various emblematic elements of life on earth: humans, animals and flora, and emphasize their interaction in a universal surroundings. Firstly, the principal academic contributions concerning the historical notion of theatre of the world are gathered and commented. The main part of the research consists of the demonstration of the metaphor's contemporary extensions, through the study of the corpus. The analysis of each play is preceded by a presentation of its author's writing motivations and motives. Then, the play itself is examined carefully with the help of a reading grid which focuses successively on the dramatic categories : characters, space and time, actions, stage directions. Thus, the thesis's body is built as an exploration of seven variations of the theatre of the world, beginning with the most abstract one and leading to the most organic one. A synthesis ends this journey, pointing out that the plays match three composition patterns, which induces many combinations of the dramatic categories. This classification unveils the ambition at the origin of each writing project. In conclusion, it appears that the theatre of the world, generally considered as an old topos which refers to the theatrality of human life, is a framework strong enough to stand up to the poetics of comtemporary drama, and vast enough to house the most singular dramaturgic inventions

Abstract:
This study meets poets who don’t properly write about dance. Immersing ourselves in the works of Henri Michaux, Paul Celan, André du Bouchet and Bernard Noël, we try to perceive beneath the thematic silence of dance, the quest for a more elementary form of convergence. This quest is also a confluence out of which expressive gestures are born, before words are formulated; soulful movements which invite dancers and poets to enjoy a common experience of the inner body, its infra-motile stirrings, its inchoate motion. This gives rise to a new comparatist horizon, paving the way for a different experience of reading poetry. For a poem indeed does not dance, but is supported by a certain « dansité » -dancity-, which alludes to the corporeal movement underlying the poem and which appeals to the reader's own motricity. Following this trajectory at the limbo and origin before movement happens, transports us to the root origin of every act of creation, and enables us to envision a poetics for the arts, one which would have the choreographic experience at its core

Abstract:
La langue devient le lieu d'une interrogation identitaire profonde<br>The purpse of this thesis is to put prword a thematic and representative approache of the fantastic work of quignard and to characterize the running of the question of language. The starting point is the perception of a feeling of defect, ill-definable and not much prone to be on object of theory. This feeling of defect is studied and moved on according to specific approaches : narration, writing and language. The defect definies the mode of meaning in quignard's morks. In a first part entitled +narrative approaches; drawing of quignard, we proposed a concise view on pascal quignard as a novelist. We used a critique based on narratology. In a second part dedicated to the writing style of quignard within the fromework of fragment, we tried to rebuild the writing processes. It is a classification of some figures of the writing of quignard through what one better perceives the links established between the writing, the ancient and the fragment. Such an arbitrary location but not exhaustive and not definitive permits to recognize the defect as a pivot of the novel of quignard. The tird part is essentially characterized and approached from the problematic of the defect of language. An uncommon stress is put on the defaulting use of the language linked to the depression, to the lock of onself and to the desertion of the mather. We have undertahen to show that quignard developpes progressively a comeback to the origine of whick defect hinges move on the ideantity and linguistic questioning. The language becomes the place of a deepe identity questioning
