Abstract:
The work presents the possibilities created by the multi-camera 3D image correlation system. The experience is based on non-contact measurement of displacements and deformations. The measurement was used basically to estimate the deflection line of the bending beams and values of strains and displacements at various points of the cross-section. The measurement was carried out by tracking the displacements of the prepared surface of the sample. The results of the numerical analysis were also presented, which were compared with the experience carried out on the measurement stand.

Abstract:
Ascaris lumbricoïdes infection is a cosmopolitan helminthiasis that is endemic in tropical countries of the globe. Often asymptomatic, it is sometimes revealed by complications that make it serious. Biliary ascariasis is one of them. We report 2 cases of ascariasis of the common bile duct in the General Surgery Department of Hospital Le Dantec of Dakar (Senegal). These were two patients with hepatic colic and acute angiocholitis in whom the diagnosis was made by ultrasound. Treatment was surgical in both cases. Through these 2 cases we review the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of this disease rarely described in our regions, which are however ascaridian endemic zones.

Abstract:
The heterogeneous field of posthuman theory allows for an account of community under the convergence of late capitalism and high technology and its spread to a global scale. Spanning bioconservative fears of a potential loss of agency and a human ‘essence’ through advances in technology, ‘transhumanist’ hopes for a biological transformation that would fulfil liberal goals for human development, as well as postmodern, feminist interpretations of the posthuman as instantiating a liberating break with liberal ideology and patriarchal structures, theories of the posthuman offer a productive starting point for exploring the transformations in understandings of human subjectivity and community at the turn of the twenty-first century. Placing the concept of community against a background of past totalitarianism and a possible future of an uncontested globalised neoliberal regime that high technology risks intensifying, the present study enquires into the possibility of a community that would escape the metaphysical logic of mastery subtending both past and present models of community and suggests that problematizing representations of the creation of what a strand in contemporary philosophy terms a non-totalising ‘communauté désoeuvrée’ and implicit proposals not for the revival of community as a teleological ‘oeuvre’, but for its rewriting may be found in works by Maurice G. Dantec, Michel Houellebec, and Antoine Volodine, works which have been labelled posthuman themselves by virtue of their incorporation of posthuman themes or structures that come in the shape of representations and problematisations of high technology and its intersection with late capitalism and narrative structures that mimic or subvert conceptions of subjectivity that can loosely be termed posthuman. These novelists write in a context of an ideological, technological, and commercial constraint that hampers literary and political agency and which is problematized both implicitly and explicitly in the use these writers make of representations of violence and literary strategies such as irony, ambiguity, and hermeticism. These representations and strategies, it will be suggested, could be read as subtle attempts to bypass those constraints and restore the potential of literary production to comment on and even intervene in the creation of community in a posthuman age.

Granger, Remy Maud. "Le roman posthumain." Paris 3, 2006. http://www.theses.fr/2006PA030040.

Full text
Abstract:
Through a comparative analysis of the novels of Houellebecq, Dantec, Ellis and Gibson, this dissertation attempts to define the transnational literary genre that I call The Posthuman Novel. The posthuman novelists are children of the media-age. Their abilities to use and abuse media coverage makes them experts in the orchestration of various scandals, which illustrate the evolution of the status of literature at the mass media age, and the position of the writer, between intellectual engagement and star system. These texts can be defined first ideologically as discourses of the endings: End of the world and apocalyptic aesthetics; end of man and death of the character. The posthuman age is the defeat of the individual. Generally the posthuman writers are testifying to the loss of those modern conceptions of man, space and time inspired by transcendence and ideals. We will also observe the novels endings as they illustrate a problematic relationship with utopia. This pessimistic discourse is elaborated through a highly satirical style, which reveals the provocative and prophetic stance of these writers. The stylistic analysis of the satiric techniques shows that satire functions as a moral position, linked to prophecy, but also as a narrative technique which reveals the mutations of language and makes the global language audible. These linguistic mutations give way to a generic redefinition of the novel. Phenomena such as simulation and massification question the generic limits of the texts. The integration of virtual spaces in the narrative questions the fictional space, the staging of tourism questions the construction of the plot and the gothic pattern contribute to the derealisation of these fictions. In fact, the posthuman writers build the model of a disincarnated novel – a novel which has freed itself of the limits of realism, but has also lost touch with the flesh. Those narratives obsessed by the actual, are loosing sight of the living

Abstract:
The purpose of the present research is to investigate the presence of Dante in four authors of the twentieth century and to discuss in what ways these authors contribute to our perception of Dante. This study begins with the analysis of Primo Levi’s reaction to Dante, and the first two chapters deal respectively with Levi’s troubled relationship with the monumentality of Dante in Levi’s personal culture and with the modern writer’s attempts at rejecting that very monumentality. In the third and fourth chapters, the focus is on the inclusion of Dante within Edoardo Sanguineti’s poetry, and on the issue of ideologically oriented exploitation of Dante both in Sanguineti’s novels and plays and in his critical analyses of the Comedy. The following chapters are about the presence of Dante in Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney. In Beckett, a network of Dantean inclusions shows how Dante’s presence can be fertile, controversial, and yet apparently discarded. The last chapter discusses Seamus Heaney’s Dantisms and especially the question of translation as both a technical and a cultural issue. The result is the perception of a vital Dantean presence, which generates approaches and revalidations in spite of its apparent distance and of its cultural diversity.

Boldrini, Lucia. "In Dante's wake : the Dantean poetics of 'Finnegans Wake'." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/35090.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigates how the theories of linguistic and literary composition of Dante's treatises and the poetics of ineffability of the Divine Comedy may be seen to provide the basis for (one of) the poetics of Joyce's Finnegans Wake. The polysemy of Joyce's last novel relies on Dante's literary-exegetical model of the four levels of meaning at the same time as it challenges it so as to show both its inadequacy for the modern literary work and, conversely, how its failings can be turned to the writer's advantage in the production of an original text. The multilingual idiom of the Wake draws from, at the same time as it reshapes, Dante's conception of the history of language and his theory of an illustrious poetic language, and the thesis shows how Joyce exploits these two aspects, turning them into a narrative framework for several episodes of the Wake and thematising their features in order to explore the function of character-roles in connection with the processes of artistic creation. Finally, Joyce's reliance on a pliable language for his evocation of the unfathomable dimension of the "nocturnal world" and of the unconscious is shown to be comparable to the poetics of ineffability that informs Dante's "vision" in the Divine Comedy. In this context, the thesis looks at such issues as silence, vowels / vocalisation, and the use of geometry to express the ineffable and / or the unspeakable. Joyce's use of Dante's works thus involves a constant reflection on the processes of writing and of literary composition as well as on the relationship between a modern writer and his sources, and the intertextual practice of the Wake is shown to be part of the "poetics in progress" that Joyce has been elaborating from his earliest to his last publication.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Claude Lefort’s ‘Dante’s Modernity’ presents a detailed and highly original interpretation of Dante’s Monarchia. Lefort casts Dante as the first political thinker with a concept of humanity defined as the whole of the human race, the first to imagine a universal society in political terms, and the first to reveal the formative role of force, of wars and division in the advent of such a political unity. Tracing the career of Dante’s innovations in the political thought and praxis of the succeeding centuries, Lefort then shows how what is ‘new’ in Dante cannot be separated from its later avatars — from the varied realizations, distortions, and misapplications it would inspire at later historical junctures. Any contemporary realization of the potential inherent in Dante’s innovative idea of sovereignty would require the project of ‘disentangling’ the links between universalism, imperialism, and nationalism that have been instituted in its name.

Abstract:
This article analyses the dynamic role of Justice in Dante’s Comedy. As the judge of his Otherworld, Dante establishes harsh punishments for the sinners in his Inferno. Moreover, he attacks their earthly fame in a way similar to what he experienced as an exile condemned to death by his Commune. Dante also defines the lighter penitences which torture the souls of his Purgatorio. Finally, Dante’s Justice shines alive in his Paradiso, first in the sky of Mercury and then, at its apotheosis, in the sky of Jupiter, when the eagle an-wers Dante the Pilgrim’s difficult questions about the salvation of pagan souls. As the eagle points out, even the blessed souls do not know the names of all the saved ones, and this remark should invite mortals to restrain from judging their peers. A similar message seems to be at the very heart of Aquinas’ speech in the sky of the Sun.

Abstract:
In this paper, a three-color dual-beam PDA (Particle Dynamic Analyzer) system (made by DANTEC Measurement Technology) is used to measure the three-dimensional velocity of an axial flow fan. Due to the geometrical limit of fan rotor, non-orthogonal velocity components are measured first, from which the orthogonal three-dimensional components of the velocity field are computed through transformation equations. The detailed flow fields at 15 axial locations upstream, inside and at the exit of the rotor are measured, respectively. On each cross section perpendicular to the rotating axis, the flow field measurement at 15 different radial locations from 50% of the blade span to the region inside the tip clearance (between the tip blade and the casing wall) are taken. The experimental technique is described, and the three dimensional flow fields (including the tip clearance flow) are presented and analyzed.

Abstract:
In the present paper the new wind tunnel located in the Fluid-dynamic Laboratory of the Dipartimento di Ingegneria Meccanica e Gestionale (DIMeG) of the Bari Polytechnic will be shortly described and the first experimental measurements on a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) will be shown. The DIMeG wind tunnel has been designed by the research group on wind energy of the Department. It is a subsonic, closed loop, wind tunnel with a transparent test part where small scale models can be analyzed. A four bladed axial fan is driven by an asynchronous three phase electric motor, which is connected to an inverter in order to change the wind speed. Angular blades have been inserted at the two curves between the fan and the test section in order to increase the uniformity of the velocity profile after the two curves. An optimization fluid-dynamic study has been carried out in order to find the best blade profile. A honeycomb has been also inserted upstream the test section in order to destroy the still existing small vorticity generated by the fan and the curves. A three-axis traversing, called Cartesian robot, has been designed and built above the test section, in order to move the hot wire probe, for wind speed measurements, by means of four step by step electric motors controlled by a personal computer. A data acquisition system has been set up. All the principal commands and controls can be performed by a dedicated personal computer, which has been programmed using LabVIEW® G-programming language. The first experimental activity has been performed on a VAWT model, of the Giromill type with parallel blades. The turbine has been connected to an AC brushless servo, able to control the braking torque. Experimental results of the flow field in two horizontal planes have been set up using a two component hot wire probe (Dantec 55R51) calibrated with the manual system Dantec 54H10. The measurement grid adopted is formed by 20 nodes in the Y direction (main flow direction) and 10 nodes in the X direction.

Abstract:
Swirl with bluff body wake in jets finds application in gas turbine engines, turbo machinery etc. to strengthen the recirculation region, improve combustion efficiency, enhance flame stabilization, improve fuel air mixing and blow off limits and lower pollutant formation. This paper discusses the combined effect of swirl and rotating bluff body wake in circular jets. The flow pattern of the swirl jet has been studied in the near vicinity of the jet exit for different inlet high Reynolds numbers (only for which the recirculation effect is beneficial), critical swirl angle (30 degree-similar to what is employed in industrial furnaces and burners), and a constant blockage ratio of the bluff body at eight different axial positions in the recirculation zone. Reynolds stresses, mean axial and tangential velocities, turbulent intensities, turbulent kinetic energy are measured and compared for the bluff body rotating and non-rotating cases. A DANTEC Dynamics make constant temperature anemometer with X-probe has been used to measure mean and turbulence parameters.

Abstract:
Drop size and velocity measurements were obtained for two nebulizers unique in their asymmetric configuration—a "quarter-moon" liquid exit port, whose axis of symmetry is located nearly co-axially with a circular air exit port. The two devices, a Mira Mist and an LB-30, are commercially available units originally designed for mass-spectrometry applications, but also useful for medicinal/pharmaceutical spray purposes. Sprays were characterized in terms of droplet velocity and size at a number of axial and radial positions. Measurements were performed using a Dantec DualPDA. Air injection pressures of 270 to 410 kPa (25 to 45 psig) and liquid flow rates of 75 to 1200 ml/hr were the operating conditions considered in this study. Water and ethanol were used as test fluids since their physical properties span the range of typical products. The results are useful because they show, for the first time, how sprays formed from such asymmetric devices evolve as they move away from the atomizer.

Duffy, James T., Mark R. D. Davies, and Leona Hamilton. "The Calibration of a Surface Mounted Aerodynamic Wall Shear Stress Gauge in Laminar Flow With a Free-Stream Pressure Gradient." In ASME 1995 International Gas Turbine and Aeroengine Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/95-gt-127.

Full text
Abstract:
A method of calibrating surface mounted thin film gauges to measure aerodynamic wall shear stress in laminar flow is presented. Hot wire measurements from the boundary-layer on a flat plate are used to find the first calibration constant and the shear stress predictions for a cylinder in cross flow are used to find the second. The cylindrical shape incorporates a favourable pressure gradient into the calibration method. Good agreement has been found between aerodynamic experimental results for the two shapes which suggests that a unique calibration exists. All experiments used Dantec 55R47 gauges operated at an overheat of 383 K above a reference temperature of 293 K. A new semi-empirical theory is used for the purpose of calibration. Input of experimental data enables the calculation of the equation parameters so that the new theory may be applied to a gauge mounted on a variety of surface profiles. Finally, calibrated gauges are used to measure the wall shear stress in laminar flow at four chordwise positions on the suction surface of a turbine blade in a two dimensional cascade.

Full text
Abstract:
Impingement heat transfer is considered as heat transfer enhancement technique. Impinging jets are used in many applications where high heat transfer rates are required. An experimental study was conducted to investigate heat transfer under impingement of a multiple circular jet array with longitudinal perforated rib surfaces (LPRS) and longitudinal solid rib surfaces (LSRS). Heat transfer results were obtained using an infrared thermal imaging technique. The equipment for the experiments consist of blower, frequency controller, plenum section, impinging jet plate, Dantec 2D LDA system, 3-D traverse system, an infrared thermal imaging system, and LabVIEW software system. In order to generate the impinging jets, circular sharp-edged holes are used. A 3×5 array of jets is issued from the nozzles through the orifice plate. Fifteen in-line jet-nozzles are equally spaced over the orifice plate with the jet diameter (d) of 5mm. The impingement section is open on all four sides providing free outflow of the spent air. The heat transfer results of the rib surfaces are compared with those of a smooth plate. Best heat transfer performance was obtained with the LPRS arrangements.

Full text
Abstract:
The three-dimensional flow field in the tip region of an isolated axial flow fan rotor with two different tip clearances are investigated using a three-color, dual-beam PDA system (Particle Doppler Anemometer, DANTEC Measurement Technology). The global performance is also obtained, and is compared favorably with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) modeling of this fan flow at a zero tip clearance. The detailed flow field measurements are taken at 15 axial locations upstream, inside and at the exit of the rotor. In the radial direction, 15 measurement locations are arranged from 50% of the blade span to the casing wall, mainly focusing on the tip region from 90% of the blade span location to the casing wall (about 10 measurement locations). The PDA data has provided a quantitative understanding of the flow phenomena in the tip region of the fan rotor. For both tip clearances, it has been observed that the tip leakage flow rolls up into a tip leakage vortex. Due to the rotation of the rotor, this tip leakage vortex moves away from the suction surface of the fan blade. A reverse flow is induced in the main flow passage because of the tip leakage vortex. The depth and extent of the tip leakage vortex grow noticeably with the increase of the tip clearance.

Abstract:
The primary goal of this study was to determine when patternation information derived from Particle Dynamics Analyzer (Dantec Dynamics dual-PDA) measurements of volume flux, velocity and mean drop size agreed with corresponding values measured using an optical patternator (En’Urga, Inc SetScan OP-600). To achieve this, data from each instrument was transformed into spatially resolved absorptances (equivalent to drop surface area per unit volume) and compared. The secondary goal of this study was to explain the cause of any discrepancies in comparison of the two absorptance sets when they occurred. Key conclusions drawn from this study are: absorptance agreement to within 20% can be achieved in many cases; however, the difference between the PDA-calculated and optical patternator-measured absorptances becomes larger as the drop arrival rate increases, as the drop size decreases, and when a significant drop size-velocity correlation is present. These discrepancies are attributed to an underestimation of the volume flux (which becomes more important with increasing droplet arrival rate), an over-reporting of the mean drop diameter (which is the result of the restrictive data acquisition scheme applied when ensuring mass closure), the limited PDA dynamic range (which can preclude simultaneously accounting for both the largest and smallest drops in the spray), and by the optical patternator’s number-density based measurement scheme (which will not yield the same results as the flux-based PDA when a drop size-velocity correlation is present).
