Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the work of Dario Argento, a filmmaker whose cinematic style and use of technology have helped popularise Italian Horror both domestically and internationally. Specifically, this analysis engages with Argento’s use of an art-historical repertoire within his cinema, namely the appropriation of architectural, pictorial, and sculptural references, and argues for their importance in terms of reading the main films that constitute my primary corpus. Existing research has only sporadically and superficially treated this area and no systematic survey has been undertaken. The purpose of my analysis is twofold. Firstly, I discuss how art-historical references are integrated into Argento’s oeuvre via copying and quotation, and how they function in the film texts in terms of colour, framing, and lighting. Secondly, I explore whether the iconographic and symbolic processes through which this art-historical repertoire is enacted form a strict bond with the film’s narrative texture. In doing so, my research delivers a broad range of analysis, from narrative to stylistic detail, through an intra-artistic methodological approach. My corpus comprises four different films spanning across Argento’s career: Profondo rosso (1975), Suspiria (1977), La sindrome di Stendhal (1996), and Il fantasma dell’Opera (1998). These films have been selected for two specific reasons. On the one hand, they are the ones containing the greatest number of artistic references. On the other hand, they take into consideration a variety of aesthetic qualities and narrative solutions that, combined together, provide an exhaustive overview of the director’s artistic imagination. Other films from Argento’s forty-year-long career are cited in relation to the aesthetic and thematic affinities with the primary corpus. Because of my intra-artistic approach, which takes in both Argento’s attention to aesthetic detail and to the synergy of the aesthetic and the narrative within a film through the art historical repertoire, I highlight a new aspect of the semantic, stylistic, and technical complexity of the director’s cinema in terms of influence, referentiality, and intertextuality.

Abstract:
Melanopsin was discovered in 1998 by Ignacio Provencio and colleagues in Xenopus leavis melanophores. Since its discovery, this photopigment has emerged as a possible candidate to mediate synchronization in vertebrates. In mammals the melanopsin is found in a subset of retinal ganglion cells, known as intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) and their role as the photopigment responsible for photoentrainment in mammals has already been established. Melanopsin is present in the retina of all vertebrate classes studied to date, nevertheless, its structure is more similar to invertebrate than to vertebrates opsins, suggesting that their phototransduction pathway occurs through the phosphoinositide pathway. This hypothesis has been confirmed by several studies in the literature. Later studies showed that melanopsin is encoded by two genes in non-mammalian vertebrates, Opn4m orthologous to mammalian and Opn4x orthologous to X. leavis, raising new questions about the functionality of this opsin. Our group has studied this photopigment in vertebrate peripheral tissues since 2001 and, in Xenopus laevis melanophores, we demonstrated that pigment granule dispersion occurs through photoactivation of melanopsin and triggering of phosphoinositide pathway. More recent studies have put melanopsin as a possible photoreceptor responsible for peripheral clocks entrainment in organisms like fish and amphibians. In this context, the ZEM-2S cell line of the teleost fish Danio rerio is a good model to study the mechanism of phototransduction in peripheral clocks. It has been previously demonstrated that this cell line is responsive to light stimuli, exhibiting a differential proliferation when submitted to different light/dark regimes and activating the expression of clock genes such as clock, per1 and cry1b, known to synchronize the biological rhythms to environmental photoperiod. Our immunocytochemistry experiments detected the presence of two proteins encoded by the melanopsin genes opn4m-1 and opn4m-2, and showed a significant difference in the distribution of proteins Opn4m-1 Opn4m-2. Quantitative PCR analyses showed that a 10-min blue light pulse is able to change the expression of the clock genes per1b, per2, cry1b and cry1a, and that this change occurred through the phosphoinositide cascade in embryonic ZEM-2S cells of D. rerio. In addition we showed that, to promote the change in clock gene expression, the phosphoinositide pathway interacts with other signaling pathways such as the nitric oxide (NO) and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways. These data suggest that melanopsin is a major candidate to mediate the photoentrainment in these cells, because taken together, the detection of melanopsin, stimulation within its absorption spectrum and activation of the phosphoinositide cascade, puts it ahead of other opsins, as the vertebrate ancient opsin (Va-opsin) and teleost multiple tissue opsin (Tmt-opsin), and other candidates, as photosensitive Crys and mechanisms of oxidative stress. In the course of this work, we could also define efficient methods for transfection of interference RNA and plasmidial DNA in ZEM-2S cells of D. rerio, which are fundamental tools in studies of gene expression in this model

Balmain, Colette Jane. "Genre, gender, giallo : the disturbed dreams of Dario Argento." Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2004. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/5795/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an examination of the giallo films of Dario Argento from his directorial debut The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970) to The Stendhal Syndrome' (1996). In opposition to the dominant psychoanalytical approaches to the horror film generally and Argento's giallo specifically, this thesis argues that the giallo, both textually and meta-textually, actively resists oedipalisation. Taking up from Deleuze's contention in Cinema 1: The Movement Image that the cinematic-image can be consider the equivalent to a philosophical concept, I suggest that Argento's giallo are examples of what Deleuze calls cinema of the "time-image": provoked and extended "philosophical" acts of imagining the world which opens up a theoretical space of thinking differently about questions of gender and genre in horror film, which takes us beyond the fixed images of thought offered by traditional psychoanalytical and feminist paradigms of horror. In the opening chapters of this thesis, I argue that the cinematic-image has to be thought "historically", and that it is only be understanding the emergence of the "giallo" in the 1960s within the wider picture of Italian national cinema, that we can understand Argento's films as specific cultural expressions of thought, which are not reducible to paradigms based upon analyses of the more puritan and fixed American horror film (via Mulvey et all). In my subsequent discussion of Argento's "Diva" trilogy, I consider an assemblage of Deleuzian becoming and poststructuralist feminist thought (Kristeva I Cixous I Irigaray) as a mechanism through which to explore the increasingly feminised and feminist spaces of his later work. This thesis concludes by assessing Argento's critical and creative legacy in films such as Toshiharu Ikeda's Evil Dead Trap (1988) and Cindy Sherman's Office Killer (1997). In these terms, a Deleuzian "approach", enables a set of readings, which open up the texts to a more productive consideration of their appeal, in a way which other more traditional approaches do not, and cannot, account for. The close textual and historical analysis demanded by Deleuze is both a reconsideration of the [feminist] politics of Argento's work, and a response to criticisms of misogynism.

Abstract:
This PhD project has been mainly focused on the synthesis of novel organic compounds containing heterocyclic and/or carbocyclic scaffold and on the study of stearic acid derivatives and their applications in biological field. The synthesis of novel derivatives of 9-hydroxystearic acid (9-HSA) evidenced how the presence of substituents on C9, able to make hydrogen bonds is of crucial importance for the biological activity. Also the position of the hydroxy group along the chain of hydroxystearic acids was investigated: regioisomers with the hydroxy group bound to odd carbons resulted more active than those bearing the hydroxy group on even carbons. Further, the insertion of (R)-9-HSA in magnetic nanoparticles gave a novel material which characterization remarked its suitability for drug delivery. Structural hybrids between amino aza-heterocycles and azelaic acid have been synthesized and some of them showed a selective activity towards osteosarcoma cell line U2OS. Several Apcin analogues bearing indole, benzothiazole, benzofurazan moieties connected to tryptaminyl-, amino pyridinyl-, pyrimidinyl- and pyrazinyl ring through a 1,1,1-trichloroethyl group were synthesized. Biological tests showed the importance of both the tryptaminyl and the pyrimidinyl moieties, confirming the effectiveness against acute leukemia models. The SNAr between 2-aminothiazole derivatives and 7-chlorodinitrobenzofuroxan revealed different behaviour depending from amino substituent of the thiazole. The reaction with 2-N-piperidinyl-, 2-N-morpholinyl-, or 2-N-pyrrolidinyl thiazole gave two isomeric species derived from the attack on C-5 of thiazole ring. Thiazoles substituted with primary- or not-cyclic secondary amines reacted with the exocyclic amino nitrogen atom giving a series of compounds whose biological activity have highlighted as they might be promising candidates for further development of antitumor agents. A series of 9-fluorenylidene derivatives, of interest in medical and optoelectronic field as organic scintillators, was synthesized through Wittig or Suzuky reaction and will be analyzed to test their potential scintillatory properties.

Dunnett, Jane Deborah. "Sociocultural pertinence in translation: Dario Fo's "Mistero buffo" and its Quebecois transfiguration." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/10357.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to illustrate, through a case-study, the sociohistorical and ideological constraints to which the activity of translation is subject. Underlying the source text that was chosen--Dario Fo's Mistero buffo--there is one particular ideologeme which can be summed up as follows: 'the people have always been exploited'. In Michel Tremblay's 1973 translation, this ideologeme is converted into a different ideologeme: 'the Quebecois have always been exploited'. In order to shed light on this radical transformation, both plays are first situated in their sociocultural contexts and then analysed in terms of the social discourse that prevailed at the time of their reception in Italian and Quebecois society respectively. In this descriptive study the concept of 'pertinence'--as opposed to the translation's aesthetic merit per se--is employed as the chief criterion for interpreting translational shifts; the pattern of these shifts indicates that they are motivated principally by Tremblay's desire to make Mistero buffo correspond to the target audience's horizon of expectations.

Full text
Abstract:
Dario Castello's Sonate concertate in stil moderno is a collection of 29 trio sonatas in two volumes, with 10 of them employing the sackbut. These works represent a significant repertoire for the sackbut in an era where specific instrumentation was only starting to become a convention. While these pieces are often studied, performed and recorded in Europe, most American trombonists are not aware of their existence. This study seeks to acquaint the American trombonist with the sonatas of Castello and to provide performance suggestions for those less familiar with this genre. Chapter 1 presents a survey of the current literature on Castello. Chapter 2 provides an historical background for music in Venice in the early 17th century, while Chpater 3 focuses on the composer and his music for sackbut. Chapter 4 investigages the sonata in early 17th century Venice. Chapter 5 provides an insight into early baroque performance practice by discussing principles such as affect, tempo, ornamentation, diminution and articulation. Examples from the ten sonatas are used to illustrate these principles, providing the modern trombonist with a framework in which to study Castello's music. The final chapter discusses the implications of this study on the American trombone curriculum.

Forsberg, Rose-Marie. "To Be True to Audience or Author - A Brief Literature Review and Comparison of Linguistic Humour in Two Translations of Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist." Thesis, Högskolan i Halmstad, Sektionen för humaniora (HUM), 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hh:diva-17797.

Full text
Abstract:
In this essay, research is conducted on two different translations of the same comic play by Dario Fo: Accidental Death of an Anarchist. The first translation is by Gillian Hanna – adapted by Gavin Richards, and the other by Simon Nye. As the original text is both satirical and comedic, one of the things investigated is how these satirical and comical features of the original text are translated. Questions asked include whether these comical and satirical features are sometimes omitted or altered for any linguistic reason, or if the “jester-like” satire of the original text is preserved. In order to answer these questions, the context of the text will first be explored, as this context may present linguistic obstacles for a translator. These possible linguistic obstacles will mainly be established through Fitzpatrick & Sawczak’s Cultural Translation Model. Chapter 2 of this essay consists of an explanation of the methodology of gathering data through primary and secondary literature sources, and, eventually a comparison of the two translations to the original text. In Chapter 3, a review of the relevant theories is presented, and the theoretical literature which may offer explanations about the linguistic properties of humour and the “comedic process”. Further, Dario Fo’s particular style of political satire is presented in Chapter 4, together with an investigation of the particular use of satire in theatre performances, and Commedia dell’arte - as background for his particular comedic style. In Chapter 5, linguistic obstacles for translating humour and satire for stage are investigated. In addition, various adaptation strategies of translation are briefly displayed, as well as a short account for Accidental Death of an Anarchist in adaptation. Finally, in Chapter 6, a comparison between some short segments of the two translations and the original text is conducted, in order to establish whether some satirical and comical features have been preserved or altered in the translations. The research will show that there exists a lack of linguistic humour theories which goes beyond linguistic puns. At the same time, various techniques are available to translate and adapt the humorous source text into the target language and culture. Even if there is no linguistic reason for altering the implications and symbolic approach of the original text, the translator may adapt the stage performance into the cultural realm of the native public. Thus, the translator can either exclude the humorous parts in the original text, or adapt the satire into domestically accepted jokes, or add new humorous events into the play. However, due to linguistic obstacles in translating humour, it is not always a matter of choice for the translator to either be true to audience or author.

Dumont-Lewi, Laetitia. Thesis, Paris 10, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA100114.

Full text
Abstract:
Dario Fo is a theatre-man whose work ceaselessly redefines the author as an actor and the actor as an author, in a process that claims his dual position on stage and in public life. He thus creates an approach to theatre that, though not radically new, distinguishes itself in the theatrical landscape of his time, by encroaching on other fields of activity and competency, earning him a global recognition as an actor and intellectual. The first part of this study analyzes the creative process and shows how Dario Fo stages himself as an author through writing, acting and directing. The second part considers how the authorial figure is presented to the public : as part of a larger network of references that lends coherence to his work as a whole, in the fixation of this work through publishing, audio and video-recording and archiving, and through the circulation of his productions in Italy and the world, with or without his presence. The third part analyzes the construction of his intellectual authority, his promotion to the status of political spokesman and mentor

Abstract:

This work aims to develop an interpretation of the symbolist poetry survival in the contemporary poetry, having as basis the poet Dario Vellozo. We intend to read his poetry putting it in relation, taking it out from the province, and showing that the literary performance of Dario in the belle époque of Curitiba it is not so distant from the movements such as the pataphysics and acephalics. The gestures of Dario, feeding a mystic symbolist poetry, building the Muse Temple (#Templo das Musas#) and creating pagan festivities in which he dressed up like a Greek and marched with his followers through the city, are not provincial acts, since these acts are marked by the reading of French symbolists and decadents and by the outbreak of mysticism that invaded Europe in the nineteenth century. From the correlation of times and texts of late nineteenth century, earlier twentieth century with contemporary poems, as well as the reading of scholars such as Walter Benjamin, Aby Warburg and Didi-Huberman, I intend to investigate how poets like Paulo Leminski, Ricardo Corona, among others, develop a clever dialog with the symbolism, reviving it, and extracting from it a strength capable of leverage its own creation.
