Persson, Björn. "Personality Neuroscience and Dark Values." Thesis, Högskolan i Skövde, Institutionen för biovetenskap, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:his:diva-10480.

Abstract:
Personality neuroscience offers a new theory of the biological basis of personality traits. It involves the use of neuroscientific methodologies to study individual differences in behavior, motivation, emotion, and cognition. Personality psychology has contributed much in identifying the important dimensions of personality, but relatively little to understanding the biological sources of those dimensions. In recent years, personality psychology has become the foundation for the study of personality disorders, and by extension, neuroscience. First, I provide a theoretical foundation for the neuroscience of normal and abnormal personality traits. Second, I conduct two empirical studies on deviant personality traits captured by the Dark Triad (i.e., Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy) and relate them to universal human values. Study I shows that darker personalities endorse values that are self-enhancing, and that justify self-serving behavior. Study II investigates the relationship between the aforementioned constructs and empathy based on the idea that empathy is an important moderating factor of dark traits. In the discussion, suggestions for future studies in neuroscience are presented, as well as some limitations relating to the constructs.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between the Dark Triad (the dark personality traits Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy), Sociosexual orientation (behavior, attitude and desire to participate in uncommited sex) and Religiosity. A correlation analysis was used to investigate the association between variables and a moderating multiple regressionanalysis (MMR) was used to investigate if Religiosity moderated the effect of the Dark Triad on Sociosexual orientation. The participants consisted of US-residents (N = 309) who responded to an online survey through Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) comprising The Dark Triad Dirty Dozen (DTDD) and the Revised Sociosexual Orientation Inventory (SOI-R). In addition participants also stated religious affiliation / no religious affiliation. Dark Triad had a positive relationship with sociosexual orientation, but no relationship with religiosity. Sociosexual orientation had a negative relationship with religiosity. Religiosity did not moderate the effect of Dark Triad on sociosexual orientation. The results partially confirm previous research. Although religiosity failed to moderate the effect of Dark Triad on sociosexual orientation, this relation should be investigated further since no previous research has been done in this field of research.

Crossley, Lisa Nicole. "The influence of the Dark Triad and communication medium on deceptive outcomes." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/59142.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study examined the influence of dark personality traits (i.e., psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism) and communication condition (i.e., face-to-face [FtF] or computer-mediated communication [CMC]) on success in a persuasive deception task. Dark personality traits commonly have been associated with manipulative behaviour in a variety of FtF contexts (e.g., workplace interactions, interpersonal relationships). However, less is known about whether dark personality traits function in the same manner online. Research on negotiation has found that individuals high in Dark Triad traits tend to perform better FtF than through CMC, and that they are outperformed by individuals lacking in dark personality traits in the context of online negotiations (Crossley, Woodworth, Black, & Hare, 2016). The current study utilized a decision-making task in which participants (N = 204) worked in dyads. One participant was randomly assigned as the deceiver and was instructed to attempt to persuade their opponent in order to increase their own chances of winning a $500 raffle. Participants consisted of both psychology and business students. Previous research has found that business students have heightened levels of dark personality traits (e.g., Hassall, Boduszek, & Dhingra, 2015). Further, the language from both the FtF and CMC dyads were recorded and analyzed to assess for differences. Results indicated that certain dark personality traits (i.e., psychopathy and narcissism) were associated with decreased deceptive success in the online context, but only for those individuals who scored the highest on the traits (i.e., typically business students). Additional results emerged in relation to language, indicating that psychopathy and Machiavellianism are related to a more guarded style of discourse.

Black, Pamela Jean. "The Dark Triad and interpersonal assessment of vulnerability : cues used and accuracy." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/43883.

Full text
Abstract:
Observer assessments of the character and emotional features of targets occur subconsciously and inform the nature of interpersonal interactions. Despite the frequency with which people engage in interpersonal perceptions, little is known about how observers come to their conclusions about the characteristics of others and whether these assessments are valid. This thesis examined the role of individual differences in interpersonal perception; specifically, I was interested in whether individuals with “dark” personalities (psychopathy, Machiavellianism, narcissism) who frequently victimize others may be more adept at assessing the traits of others to facilitate the ease of picking vulnerable targets. The purpose of the current thesis was twofold; first to generate a data-driven model of the manner in which individuals, particularly those possessing Dark Triad traits, assess others, including the cues that they use to inform their decisions. Secondly, I examined the accuracy of observers varying in Dark Triad traits in their ability to assess the personality and emotional traits characteristic of vulnerability in others. The results of the first part of the study revealed that high Dark Triad scoring individuals reliably use specific cues to derive their interpersonal assessments, and that there are a number of biases that Dark Triad individuals hold that may hinder their ability to accurately assess others. Specifically, those scoring high on the Dark Triad perceive others as less agreeable, having low self-esteem, and highly neurotic, anxious, and depressed. The results of the second part of the study reveal that indeed these negative perceptions of others hinder the ability of Dark Triad individuals to accurately assess others. There were few significant findings for accuracy, and the relationships that were significant revealed that Dark Triad individuals were worse at assessing others. When broken down by presentation modality, there were no significant Dark Triad by modality interactions, though there were a number of significant main effects of modality type. Specifically, participants were best able to assess target’s traits using the video only modality and were significantly worse at assessing target’s traits when using the transcript modality. The implications of these findings and future directions for research are discussed.

Kabat, Robert. "Dark Triad Personality Traits Prediction of Managers' Mind-set in Business Organizations." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6841.

Full text
Abstract:
Presence of the Dark Triad traits of Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy in the workplace, especially among managers, has received increased attention due to the implications for organizations. One way to influence behavior in business organizations is through controlled interventions to change individual mind-sets. A review of the extant literature indicated that the relationship between Dark Triad traits and mind-set had not been sufficiently examined. A quantitative study was conducted to examine whether a manager's Dark Triad traits predict their mindset. To explore this relationship, a sample of 153 managers' responses was collected online. The Short Dark Triad measure was used to assess participants' Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy and the Implicit Theory Measure was used to assess mind-set. Regression showed that only Machiavellianism predicts mind-set, accounting for 7% of the variance in mind-set as the criterion variable. The findings indicate that the relationship between Dark Triad traits and mind-set is weaker than a review of the extant psychological literature might suggest. Additionally, this study found that the Dark Triad traits are significantly negatively correlated with manager age, which might provide a new direction for further research. Further research on how and why Dark Triad traits tend to decline with age is recommended. The present study suggests that a better understanding of the relationship between the Dark Triad traits and mind-set and the knowledge that controlled interventions aimed at promoting a growth mind-set are most likely not a useful tool to mitigate the level of Dark Triad psychological traits of managers in business organizations.

Abstract:
This study seeks to analyze the Dark Triad personality traits in the decision to manipulate earnings in order to maximize personal and business earnings. For the theoretical discussion, it was considered the Dark Triad of personality, composed by non-pathological traits of Narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism and also, the opportunistic use of the financial-accounting information, regarding the decision to manipulate earnings, grounded on the Upper Echelon Theory. A theoretical and empirical methodology was employed. Data were collected using survey questionnaire divided into four parts: demographic profile, personality measurement tool - Short Dark Triad (SD3), a Business Simulation with assertive decision-making with a focus on financial maneuvers and a game in the Lottery format. In order to adapt the SD3 for use in Brazil and to test three formulated hypotheses, three studies were carried out. The Study 1 used a sample of 30 accountancy students; Study 2 used a sample of 131 MBA students in the area of Financial Management. Both studies were conducted as a preliminary test to adjust the questionnaire to Study 3. Data for Study 3 were collected from 263 managers, which have had more than six months of experience. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, hypotheses tests and logistical regression evidenced a significant correlation among the three personality traits. The highest correlation was found between Machiavellianism and psychopathy. There was a significant positive relationship between high incidence of Machiavellianism and psychopathy traits and the decision to manipulate earnings. Regarding the levels, the high and moderate traits of Machiavellianism showed greater approximation. On the other hand, moderate and low traits of Psychopathy showed greater approximation, allowing for the inference that the moderate trait indicates a smaller tendency of managers deciding to manipulate the earnings. Narcissism did not reveal differences between the averages, which made it impossible to analyze its levels. The study confirmed the positive relationship between the interaction of the three Dark Triad personality traits and the decision to manipulate earnings. Therefore, the results confirm the proposed thesis that the decision to manipulate earnings to maximize personal and business earnings is associated with the interaction of Machiavellianism, Narcissism and psychopathy and the levels (low, moderate and high) of, at least, one of these Dark Triad traits. This study contributes theoretically, practically and methodologically to the field of Behavioral accounting. It discussed an innovative psychological theme in the national environment. The knowledge of the attributes of these personality traits may offer businesses insights to recognize the benefits and drawbacks of living with these types of managers and following more closely their actions, especially, to avoid organizational damage. Recognizing these traits in the others and in one\'s self may promote a more pleasant coexistence, by learning to deal with exteriorized behavior without the purpose of making these individual characteristics public out of respect for the involved ethical questions.

Abstract:
This submission spans my work undertaken over the course of recent years on sub-clinical narcissism, Machiavellianism, and sub-clinical psychopathy: the Dark Triad of personality. Across this thesis, I present a series of published and unpublished materials that cover these overlapping yet distinct personality traits in relation to their attractiveness to women, short- and long-term mating preferences, broader personality and lifestyle correlates, general and sexual competitiveness (in women), verbal and non-verbal behavioural outcomes in a mate-attraction scenario, and health-related behaviours and longevity. I also apply a form of scale analysis to establish how well these traits are measured across sex and age groups by a short inventory that has seen widespread use in the field. Broadly, I consider these issues against a backdrop of evolutionary psychology, individual differences in personality, sex- and age-related differences, and the perception and measurement of personality traits. Specifically, I consider the need to look beyond self-reports, especially when over-claiming is a serious risk, to simultaneously evaluate sex similarities, as well as sex differences, to develop an understanding of the particular behaviours that are demonstrated by individuals with personalities associated with higher levels of mating success, and the need to subject inventories to rigorous scrutiny, across both classical, and item response testing. In each chapter, I have sought to contribute to the on-going discussions that researchers active in this field are engaged with regarding the future of this rapidly-advancing area of study. Interest in this personality constellation shows no sign of abating – its rise to prominence within evolutionary and personality psychology to date has been swift – and I conclude with thoughts and suggestions as to which areas future research could explore in order to further our understanding of the Dark Triad.

Chung, Kai Li. "The dark triad : examining judgement accuracy, the role of vulnerability, and linguistic style in interpersonal perception." Thesis, Edinburgh Napier University, 2017. http://researchrepository.napier.ac.uk/Output/1031400.

Abstract:
The Dark Triad constructs – Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism – are typically associated with socially aversive behaviours, including insensitivity and exploitation. Despite this, individuals high in Dark Triad traits can be successful and popular outside of clinical and forensic contexts. Research suggests that individuals susceptible to exploitation possess traits signalling vulnerability, and Dark Triad individuals are adept at identifying these when choosing victims. Language is also known to reveal traces of Dark Triad characteristics. This project examined patterns of interpersonal perception among Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism, with the aim to highlight similarities and differences across the three traits. Three studies explored these traits and the ways they manifest in social contexts. Study 1 investigated the extent to which perceptions of individuals high in Dark Triad traits accurately correspond to personality, emotional attributes, and vulnerability within their targets for manipulation. The cues they use for their judgements were considered. Participants who completed Dark Triad measures watched four video clips of dyadic interactions. Results indicated that Dark Triad individuals demonstrated a negative–other bias, whereby they generally perceived all targets as being vulnerable. Study 2 examined the characteristics of individuals who seemingly condone and abet Dark Triad individuals. Results showed that predictors of vulnerability included low extraversion, low conscientiousness, high neuroticism, and high agreeableness. The vignette method was used to elicit perceptions towards Dark Triad behaviours. Response styles on Likert-type statements and open-ended questions between high and low vulnerability groups differed significantly; the less vulnerable were more derogatory whereas the more vulnerable were less harsh. Study 3 qualitatively assessed language as a marker of Dark Triad traits using text analysis. Case studies of individuals high on the Dark Triad scales revealed that their linguistic patterns were consistent with their respective theoretical conceptions. This mixed methods research established that the Dark Triad traits do not uniformly entail the same behavioural outcomes. It also highlighted the importance of the interactive context between the destructive and the susceptible, through which researchers can devise strategies to help organisations better manage such individuals.

Abstract:
One reason why many change initiatives fails is becauseof the employees' resistance to change. Dispositional resistance to change (RTC) is described as individual tendencies to avoid or resist change. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate to which extent an individual's personality explains its resistance to change. A web-based survey consisting of the IPIP30, SD3 and RTC scale instruments was answered by 158 participants (women=70%). Bivariate correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to process the data. The results showed that 41% of the variance in RTC can be explained by the Big Five and the control variables of the study, personality traits extraversion and neuroticism accounted for the significant contributions. The study showed that the Big Five is related to all RTC factors, this has not been reported before. Furthermore, the study showed that Dark Triad together with the control variables accounted for 23% of the variance in RTC, narcissism and Machiavellianism accounted for the most important contributions. The study indicates that there may be further uses for personality testing.

Abstract:
With the help of personality tests and by knowing the individual's personality, research has shown that it's possible to predict behavior and perceived mental health to some extent. The present study aimed to examine whether and how the personality trait agreeableness relates to perceived well-being among leaders. Furnham, Richards and Paulhus (2013) argue that Dark Triad, socially deviant personality traits, is an extension of agreeableness. Therefore Dark Triad was used in this study and in order to possibly obtain more connections for perceived well-being. Instruments used were IPIP-NEO-120 (α=.87), based on the Big Five theory, the most common theory among personality research. To measure Dark Triad traits Dirty Dozen (α=.86) was used. To measure well-being GHQ-12 (General Health Questionnaire) (α=.87) was used. The study was conducted by an online survey that was answered by respondents who have or have had a leader position (N=99). Respondents age ranged from 25-67, the gender distribution was 54% male and 46% female. Insignificant results were found between agreeableness and perceived well-being. Significant results were found between Dark Triad and perceived well-being (r=.22*), which is further interpreted to mean that people tend to feel better if they possess deviant personality traits, and particularly narcissism. A reasonable conclusion from the study is that it's not possible, based on our sample, to predict how well-being is perceived in the role of leader with agreeableness but to some extent with the help of Dark Triad.

Hjalmarsson, Annica.

Abstract:
Emotional intelligence has been defined differently throughout studies for many years in several countries. The trait emotional intelligence consists of four dimensions; emotionality, self-control, well-being and sociability, and is measured by the TEIQue-SF measuring instrument. TEIQue-SF has achieved good validity as a measurement tool in different languages and is now validated in Swedish through this study. Previous research has shown liaisons between the emotional intelligence (EI), personality and work performance. However, these together have not been investigated in Sweden. The purpose of this study was to investigate correlations between Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQ-SF), Mini-International Personality nventory Pool-6 (Mini-IPIP6), Short Dark Triad (SD3) and Individual Work Performance Questionnaire (IWPQ), and to find out which personality traits and dimensions within self-perceived individual work performance best explain the variance within TEIQue-SF dimensions. The study was conducted as a cross-sectional study with 228 Swedish participants (M = 34 years, SD = 12.6, range 16-71 years, 66% women) with an average work experience of 14 years (SD = 11.5). Expected result was that neuroticism would correlate negatively with TEIQue-SF four dimensions, which was also achieved in this study. Positive correlation with Task Performance and Contextual Performance was found between all dimensions of EI. Regression analysis also showed that neuroticism had a negative relation to explanation of variance in all imensions of TEIQue-SF. A preliminary conclusion is that TEIQue-SF has shown theoretical and empirically reasonable relation to relevant variables and can be considered validated among younger people with relatively high educational levels.

A challenge for companies around the world is individual work performance, which has led to extensive research on the subject. Personality has proven to be one of the factors that play a significant role in individual work performance. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between personality and self-perceived individual work performance and to investigate which personality traits can explain most of the variations of the self-perceived individual work performance. A quantitative study was conducted with a web-based questionnaire containing a total of 75 questions. The measuring instruments MiniIPIP6, SD3, and IWPQ were used to measure personality and self-perceived individual work performance based on self-assessment scales. A total of 302 persons participated in the study (M = 44 years, SD = 13.2, range 20 - 74 years, 72% women). The only requirement to participate in the study was that the respondent had some form of professional experience of at least 50% for at least 3 months. The average work experience was M = 22.4 years (SD = 13.2, range 0.7 - 51 years). The results showed that narcissism had the greatest significance for selfperceived contextual performance and task performance while psychopathy proved to be most important for self-perceived counterproductive work behavior. Our conclusion is that personality is a predictor of self-perceived individual work performance.

Abstract:
Entrepreneurs play a vital role in the modern day economy. Knowing what causes an individual to become an entrepreneur has fostered much attention in academic literature, but not enough of the research has looked into individual level variables that could cause an individual to have an entrepreneurial intention. This study addresses this need in research by utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior to investigate entrepreneurial intention. Not all entrepreneurs are alike. Some entrepreneurs are motivated by financial gains while others are motivated by social concerns. The individual characteristics of entrepreneurs may not be identical, but it is believed that there are similarities. This current study uses a self-report survey approach to examine the potential impact that barriers to entry into entrepreneurship will have upon an individual’s commercial and social entrepreneurial intention. This study will also examine the moderating effect of gender identity, grit, and the Dark Triad of personality upon the previously established relationship of the three TPB antecedents to intention and commercial and social entrepreneurial intention.

Abstract:
In this study perceived ethical leadership was examined as a moderator of the relationship between the dark triad personality traits of narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy and counterproductive work behavior (CWB) using a sample of 208 employees recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk. These participants completed measures of personality (Short Dark Triad; Jones & Paulhus, 2014), counterproductive workplace behavior (Counterproductive Work Behavior Checklist; Spector et al., 2006), and employee perception of their direct supervisor’s ethical leadership (Brown, Treviño, & Harrison, 2005). Participants were compensated $0.65 for completing the survey. Correlation and moderation analyses (Hayes, 2012) were used to analyze data. Significant correlations suggest that individuals scoring high on Machiavellianism and psychopathy also reported engaging in more CWB. The relationship between Narcissism and counterproductive workplace behavior approached significance in the predicted direction. Machiavellianism and psychopathy were not negatively related to the employee’s perception of their supervisor’s ethical leadership. Narcissism was significantly positively related to an employee’s perception of their supervisor’s ethical leadership. Finally, ethical leadership did not moderate the relationship between Machiavellianism or psychopathy and CWB. Ethical leadership did not moderate the relationship between Narcissism and CWB, but results were approaching significance in the predicted direction. These results suggest that employees who are manipulative and lack empathy were more likely to engage in harmful behaviors in the workplace such as abuse, production deviance, sabotage, theft, and withdrawal. Further, employees who were more narcissistic and have a grandiose view of themselves were more likely to view their leaders as ethical. Overall, the results of this study indicate that perceived ethical leadership does not affect the frequency in which employees high in narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy reported engaging in counterproductive work behaviors.

Abstract:
The overall purpose of the study is to investigate narcissistic leadership in the Swedish Armed Forces. Since research on narcissism in the Swedish Armed Forces is an unexplored area the research design has an open and unconditional attitude to the research area. This open and explorative approach is achieved through using the method Grounded Theory. The results show that the informants have experienced narcissistic leadership in the Swedish Armed Forces. In addition, the results indicate that such leadership, from a career point of view, can be competitive, but over time is doomed to fail. The empirical data illustrates examples of that military leaders with narcissistic personality traits can advance in the hierarchy and potentially cause harm to the organization. Empirical data also indicates that there are many difficulties associated with identifying narcissists in the Swedish Armed Forces. This can possibly be correlated with the fact that the traits associated with grandiose narcissism substantially overlaps with what we think of as transformational leadership. The aim of the study is relevant since destructive narcissistic leaders annually lead several companies and organizations to ruin, causing great expense and much suffering among their followers.

Abstract:
Dark triad is a group of three dark personality scales consisting of subclinical psychopathy, subclinical narcissism and Machiavellianism (Paulhus & Williams. 2002). The Short Dark Triad (SD3), is the measuring tool and was developed by Jones and Paulhus (2013). The purpose of this thesis was to validate a Swedish translation of the SD3. This was done within an existing research project and included 103 respondents, aged 19-64 years, all being employed. They were assigned to respond to nine different surveys, three of them measuring psychopathy, narcissism and Machiavellianism-related scales. Convergent validation was done by correlation analysis with IPIP-120, measuring the personality of five factor model and Swedish universities Scales of Personality (SSP), measuring personality traits based on biological markers, and how well they measure the SD3. Our results generally confirm earlier research on studies between five factor models personality scales and SD3 (Furnham, Richards, Rangel, & Jones, 2014). One result of particular importance was the negative correlation with the Agreeableness Scale since it is a core for the dark triad personalities. Furthermore, our results followed the expected patterns in the correlations between dark triad personalities and the five factor model. The result of our thesis concludes that the Swedish translation of thPSKe SD3 test is to be considered valid.

Abstract:
This study proposes that individual personality characteristics and behavioral triggering effects come together to motivate online victimization. It draws from psychology’s current understanding of personality traits, attribution theory, and criminological research. This study combines the current computer deviancy and hacker taxonomies with that of the Dark Triad model of personality mapping. Each computer deviant behavior is identified by its distinct dimensions of cyber-criminal behavior (e.g., unethical hacking, cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and identity theft) and analyzed against the Dark Triad personality factors (i.e., narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy). The goal of this study is to explore whether there are significant relationships among the Dark Triad personality traits and specific cyber-criminal behaviors within social network sites (SNSs). The study targets offensive security engineers and computer deviants from specific hacker conferences and from websites that discuss or promote computer deviant behavior (e.g., hacking). Additional sampling is taken from a general population of SNS users. Using a snowball sampling method, 235 subjects completed an anonymous, self-report survey that includes items measuring computer deviance, personality traits, and demographics. Results yield that there was no significant relationship between Dark Triad and cyber-criminal behaviors defined in the perceived hypotheses. The final chapter of the study summarizes the results and discusses the mechanisms potentially underlying the findings. In the context of achieving the latter objective, exploratory analyses are incorporated and partly relied upon. It also includes a discussion concerning the implications of the findings in terms of providing theoretical insights on the Dark Triad traits and cyber-criminal behaviors more generally.

Abstract:
Purpose – Online environments, such as social networks and online forums, offer new possibilities and a wide variety of identity and social relationship management for the users. However, besides functional contributions like mutual support and easy ways of establishing contacts there are critical perspectives on computer-mediated communication (CMC) regarding detrimental behavior like provoking, overbearing, attacking and insulting other users, especially when anonymity is high. Recent research has shown that these kinds of online behavior are associated with personality traits like sadism, machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy (Buckels, Trapnell & Paulhus, 2014) and can lead to severe trouble, negative affect and dysfunction in online communities (Cheng, Danescu-Niculescu-Mitzil & Leskovec, 2015). As such, in the public perception “trolls“ have become a synonym for counterproductive and dysfunctional behavior (Bishop, 2014a, 2014b). Our research aim was to shed more light on trolling and counterproductive online behavior theoretically as well as empirically. In other words: We wanted to know who is behind the troll? How can he or she be characterized in terms of personality traits and what can be expected from trolls when it comes to the organizational context and job performance? Design/methodology/approach – In a first step, we formulated a theoretical framework on counterproductive online behavior. On that ground, two online surveys (N = 122; N = 133) were conducted. The first study’s goal was to develop and validate a questionnaire on counterproductive online behavior. The second study analyzed counterproductive online behavior and tested for possible interrelations to personality traits and work-related outcomes. Originality/value – Using explanatory factor analyses we developed a 40-item questionnaire with two higher dimensions: Constructiveness and destructiveness. 15 subscales focus on different communication styles and trolling strategies. The second study tested the two dimensions of counterproductive online behavior on work-related outcomes such as work engagement, task-related performance and interpersonal facilitation. As was expected, destructiveness revealed significant negative correlations with all work-related outcomes as well as deviant work behavior. Constructiveness, in contrast, showed positive associations with interpersonal facilitation. Practical implications – So far, research on trolling and counterproductive online behavior has been limited to theoretical or anecdotal approaches in most cases (cf. Bishop, 2013a, 2013b). Our study aimed at a more systematic examination of this CMCspecific phenomenon. However, our study design, acquisition of the samples and the formulation of the questionnaire suggest that the results are valid indeed. On that note, our research is a first step for a deeper understanding on people showing counterproductive online behavior.

Abstract:
Some researchers have argued that narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy (i.e. 'the Dark Triad') may be identical personality traits, especially in normal populations. Three studies were conducted to assess the similarities and differences between the three traits in normal (i.e. university) populations. Study 1 (N = 114) found that (1) the three constructs can be differentiated on the basis of Big Five correlations, (2) narcissists can be distinguished by their self-enhancing tendencies, and (3) Machiavellians and psychopaths possess a higher nonverbal (compared to verbal) intelligence ratio. In Study 2 (N = 130), all three of the Dark Triad constructs correlated positively with interest in casual sex. Finally, Study 3 (N = 356) illustrated that psychopaths have a high penchant for antisocial entertainment activities and delinquent behaviour. Intercorrelations among the Triad constructs ranged from .21 to .57. Overall, these findings suggest that narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy are in fact three separate personality traits.

The present investigation has as its first objective to verify if there is a possible relationship between the personality traits designated by the Dark Triad and the servant leadership practices. The second objective is to seek to define the interaction between a Dark Server Leader and the engagement of its employees. For the study our option was to analyze the 2008 film trilogy, Batman – The Dark Knight by director Christopher Nolan. We suggest that films can serve as a path for development and discussion of the key concepts we set out to investigate. The results obtained allowed us to determine possible lines of investigation. An individual may have a personality with Dark Triad traits and simultaneously have Server Leader practices. It is possible that Servant Leader practices may be mitigating actions derived from the Personality with Dark traits. And finally, to question what is the perception of employees in relation to a Dark Server Leader. It was possible to analyze that narcissistic and Machiavellian traits, when conditioned by Servant Leadership, direct action in favor of the organization. The implications and possible directions for future studies will be discussed.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.A. ( Clinical Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2013
This study investigated the relationship between the ‘dark triad’ personality traits and risky sexual behaviour (sociosexuality), and the effect of gender on the relationship. Participants consisted of two hundred and twenty-two (222) University of Limpopo students. Correlation analysis results indicate that, among males, primary psychopathy is positively associated with overall sociosexuality and secondary psychopathy is negatively associated with the behavioural component of sociosexualiy. Primary, secondary and overall psychopathy was positively related to risky sexual behaviour (sociosexuality). However, Machiavellianism, narcissism and overall psychopathy were not related to all dimensions of sociosexuality. Regression analysis results revealed that very few ‘dark triad’ personality traits have the capacity to predict risky sexual behaviour (sociosexuality). High risk socio-sexual behavioural features were predicted by the ‘dark triad’ personality traits mostly among females than among males. There were comparatively more factors associated with risky sexual behaviour among females than males in this sample. Generally, the ‘dark triad’ personality traits varied in relating with features of risky sexual behaviour. The nature of the relationship of ‘dark triad’ personality traits depends on the particular type of risky sexual behaviour. This is contrary to previous empirical findings that suggest that, when measured in a normal sample, correlates of the ‘dark triad’ personality traits will be the same. Recommendations were made on the basis of the results. Key words: ‘dark triad’, narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism, sociosexuality.

Abstract:

It is intended to analyze whether people with certain dominant Dark Triad traits perceive the leader's effectiveness in the same or different way. For study we chose to assess whether people who identify themselves with certain traits of the Dark Triad also can perceive the characteristics of an effective leadership. With the results obtained we can verify that on average the participants perceive themselves with a slight trait oriented towards narcissism and do not perceive themselves with traits of machiavellianism or psychopathy. In general, the individuals perceive a leader as effective with the set of five practices performed (Challenge, Inspire, Model, Enable and Encourage). No association was found between the narcissism trait and leadership practices. It was also possible to analyze that the traits of machiavellianism and psychopathy have negative associations with practically all leadership practices. The main of this research is to investigate the relationship between moral leadership and organizational citizenship behavior. In terms of value activation theory and expectancy-value model, we’d also like to see motives was used as a mediator between this relationships, and if individual’s dark triad was acting as a moderator between moral leadership and motives. 58 groups (280 participants) took part in this research. Results of this research suggest that moral leadership is positively related to OCB, employee’s altruistic motivation mediates this relationship. This research also proves that employee’s dark triad personality will buffer the positive impact of moral leadership to employee’s altruistic motivation, but strengthen the negative impact of moral leadership to employee’s egoistic motivation.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The Dark Triad consists of three overlapping personality traits: Psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and Narcissism, (Paulhus & Williams, 2002). This investigation examines two main research goals. The first aims to identify the common traits that occupy the core of the Dark Triad of personality. The literature suggests that the Dark Triad Core traits are low agreeableness (e.g., Jakobwitz & Egan, 2006), aggression (e.g., Kerig & Stellwagen, 2010), impulsivity (e.g., Thomaes, Bushman, De Castro, & Stegge, 2009), low emotional intelligence (e.g., Ali, Amorim & Chamorro-Premuzic, 2009), and potentially low neuroticism (Paulhus & Williams, 2002). The second research goal aims to identify a developmental trajectory of how early life risk factors influence each other and the Dark Triad. The literature suggests that being raised in a low SES environment (e.g., Chapple & Johnson, 2007), experiencing trauma (e.g., Tackett et al., 2009), and being the child of poor parenting styles (e.g., De Clercq et al., 2008), are related to the occurrence of the Dark Triad. An anxious or avoidant attachment style (Loeber & Hay, 1997) and low self-control (Gramzow et al., 2004) may also predict the Dark Triad. Using a sample of 546 adults, the first study demonstrated that the proposed Dark Triad Core traits represent a construct that is overlapping, but not equivalent to, the construct represented by the Dark Triad personality traits. Psychopathy, Machiavellianism, Narcissism, low agreeableness, and aggression load one factor, while aggression, impulsivity, low emotional intelligence, neuroticism, Narcissism and Machiavellianism load a second correlated factor. Using Structural Equation Modeling, several models were tested and a final model was generated that provides a preliminary developmental trajectory of the Dark Triad. This model indicates that poor parenting practices tend to increase the expression of anxious attachment in children. Furthermore, fathers’ poor parenting marginally decreases children’s self-control. Experiencing trauma also tends to increase anxious attachment and decrease self-control in victims. Then, anxious attachment and low self-control influence the expression of the Dark Triad. This line of research begins to define the core of the Dark Triad, while also defining the impact of childhood experiences and personal characteristics in the expression of the Dark Triad.

Abstract:
Juvenile delinquency arises as a recurrent problem in the forensic context among younger populations. Its impact on society justifies the interest in the study of various explanatory perspectives and in the characterization of risk (and protective) factors. In this sense, the construct of the Dark Triad has received plenty of attention due to its potential relevance in explaining the delinquency phenomena. In Portugal, there is a scarcity of empirical studies focused on this construct and with forensic samples, particularly with teenagers detained in the Educational Centre. One of the instruments evaluating this construct is the Short Dark Triad (SD3) and this study is, to date, the first to apply it in the context of Portuguese juvenile justice. Thus, the present study aims to analyze the relationships between the personality traits of the Dark Triad and the following risk factors: empathy, impulsivity, aggressiveness and delinquency. For this study was used a forensic sample of 52 young males, aged between 12 and 18 years old (M = 16.15; SD = 1.06), admitted to an Educational Centre. The sample-collection protocol consisted of the application of brief instruments concerning to the above- mentioned variables and a socio-demographic and criminal data collection form. The main results indicate that the psychopathy trait significantly predicts explicit proactive aggressiveness, cognitive empathy, delinquency and the age of the first illegality. In addition, the traits of Machiavellianism and narcissism seem to be associated, in different ways, with the affective, interpersonal, and behavioral dimensions of the remaining subscales. To sum up, these results reinforce the idea that the Dark Triad can help to understand the psychological and emotional factors underlying the development of antisocial behaviors in adolescents. Thus, this construct can contribute to the development of new approaches addressing prevention and psychotherapeutic intervention with youths at-risk.

Garrido, Tamara Álvarez. "Supervisors’ dark triad impact on affective organizational commitment and satisfaction with supervisors." Master's thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/24116.

Abstract:
The study of dark personality traits and their implications still has many unknowns to be solved, especially in the organizational area. Previous research has demonstrated the existence of a negative impact on work outcomes. The proposed study aims to analyze whether the traits of the Dark Triad -Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy- of supervisors are negatively related to Affective Organizational Commitment and Satisfaction with Supervisors. It is expected that this relationship is mediated by Abusive Supervision, and in turn this relationship is conditioned by Moral Identity. In view of the results, Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy are negatively related to Affective Organizational Commitment and to Satisfaction with Supervisors. Abusive Supervision mediated partially the relationship between the three traits of Dark Triad and Satisfaction with Supervisors, not being significant in the case of Affective Organizational Commitment. As far as moderate mediation is concerned, contrary to expectations, only Internal Moral Identity was shown to condition the relationship between supervisors’ Machiavellianism and narcissism respect to Satisfaction with supervisors via Abusive Supervision. Considering the results obtained, it can be affirmed that Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy in supervisors have negative outcomes at work. Likewise, the perception of supervision as abusive shows a negative impact, which makes it essential to encourage ethical behavior on the part of supervisors.

This study explores the effect of Dark Triad of the family business second generation on the success of succession, and investigates whether organizational commitment moderates the aforementioned relationship. In this study, 180 questionnaires were distributed, 143 were collected, 8 invalid questionnaires were deducted, and 135 valid questionnaires were used. The effective questionnaire recovery rate was 75.00%. The results show that the Machiavellianism of second generation has a positive impact on succession success. In addition, family business second generation’ psychopath will negatively affect succession success. Finally, affective commitment and normative commitment will moderate the relationship between Machiavellianism and succession success; normative commitment will moderate the relationship between psychopathy and succession success; affective commitment will moderate the relationship between narcissism and succession success. According to the analysis results, this study suggests that family business should pay attention to the education of second generation and contribute to the sustainable inheritance of family business.

Abstract:
Three studies were undertaken to examine the relationship between the Dark Triad (i.e., psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism) and faking ability. Study 1 examined the relationship between psychopathy and the ability to fake good and fake bad on self-report personality inventories in a sample of 84 male federal offenders. Results showed that when faking good, successful fakers scored significantly higher than unsuccessful fakers on carefree nonplanfulness, and significantly lower on stress immunity. When faking bad, successful and unsuccessful fakers did not differ significantly on psychopathy total or subscale scores. Study 2 examined the effect of the Dark Triad on the ability to fake good and fake bad on self-report personality inventories in a sample of 166 undergraduates. Results indicated that when faking good, total psychopathy significantly predicted successful faking for 1 of 3 methods of evaluation, while Machiavellianism significantly predicted success at faking good for 2 of 3 methods of evaluation. Narcissism was unrelated to success at faking good. In addition, the Dark Triad constructs did not predict success at faking bad. Study 3 examined the relationship between the Dark Triad constructs and the ability to fake good interpersonally. In this study, 32 undergraduates comprising four groups (i.e., controls, and individuals high in psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism) provided videotaped self-presentations. A separate group of 134 university students subsequently rated the veracity of these presentations. Results indicated that when faking good, psychopathy and narcissism groups were rated as more believable than the control group. Conversely, the Machiavellianism group was less successful at faking good than the control group. Contributions of this research to the fields of personality assessment and self-presentation are discussed.

Gough, S. "Exploring the role of the dark tetrad and self-efficacy in emotional manipulation." Thesis, 2016. https://eprints.utas.edu.au/23574/1/Gough_whole_thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Emotional manipulation is the use of high-level emotional skills to manipulate others for self-serving reasons. This study examined individuals’ belief in their emotional manipulation skills (trait emotional manipulation) and the frequency with which they engaged in emotional manipulation (willingness to emotionally manipulate). The influence of emotional intelligence, primary psychopathy, secondary psychopathy, Machiavellianism, grandiose narcissism, vulnerable narcissism, sadism, general self-efficacy, and social self-efficacy on trait emotional manipulation and willingness to emotionally manipulate was examined for the first time. Participants comprised 245 women and 136 men who completed an anonymous online questionnaire within a cross-sectional correlational design. Results from regression analyses indicated that males’ belief about and use of emotional manipulation skills was predicted by antisocial traits such as psychopathy, whereas females’ belief about and use of emotional manipulation skills was predicted by manipulative, power-seeking traits such as narcissism. Limitations from the current study include the use of self-report measures and cross-sectional design. The findings from this study show the differential mechanisms through which emotional manipulation occurs between genders, and the discrepancy between the mechanisms that predict those that believe they can emotionally manipulate others, compared to those who actually do. The variables identified as predictors in this study may be targeted when developing interventions for these individuals.

Tracy, RP. "The dark tetrad and depressive symptoms : exploring the role of rumination." Thesis, 2017. https://eprints.utas.edu.au/23742/1/whole_TracyRP_thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Psychopathy, narcissism, Machiavellianism, and sadism comprise the Dark Tetrad; a group of socially aversive, non-clinical personality traits characterised by callousness, dishonesty, and manipulation. Psychopathy has been further differentiated into primary and secondary psychopathy, while two variants of narcissism, grandiose and vulnerable, have also been identified. Few studies have investigated the mental health correlates of the dark traits, thus the current study examined the relationship between the Dark Tetrad and depression, and explored the role of rumination in this relationship. Two subtypes of rumination were considered: brooding and reflection. The sample comprised 316 individuals aged between 18 and 68 years, 53.8% of whom were members of the community while 46.2% were current university students. Participants completed an anonymous online survey, with a cross-sectional, correlational design. Results largely supported the hypotheses, indicating that the dark traits fall along a continuum of depressive symptoms. Vulnerable narcissism and secondary psychopathy were shown to significantly predict higher depression levels, while grandiose narcissism was significantly connected to lower depression scores. Rumination was found to moderate the relationship between the Dark Tetrad and depression, however this was only the case for the brooding subtype. This research indicated that dark personality traits likely influence the selection and use of coping strategies, such as rumination, and illustrated the impact this can have on depressive symptoms. Further exploration of these connections would offer a greater understanding of socially aversive behaviours and how individuals with these traits function in the world, with implications for existing models of personality and psychopathology.

Hyde, JL. "Emotional manipulation in the workplace." Thesis, 2021. https://eprints.utas.edu.au/37870/1/Hyde_whole_thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Most emotional intelligence research has focused on the positive aspects (the ability to make someone feel better) rather than the darker aspects (the ability to make someone feel worse). Emotional manipulation represents a dark aspect of emotional intelligence and is defined as the ability to influence another’s feelings and behaviours for one’s own self-interest or benefit (Austin, Farrelly, Black, & Moore, 2007). The potential contextual influence of the workplace setting on this nefarious type of emotional intelligence is yet to be explored. Given that one third of Australian employees attribute their levels of stress to issues in the workplace (Australian Psychological Society, 2015), it is imperative that researchers focus on the impacts of emotional manipulation in workplace contexts which may influence employee psychological health, wellbeing and productivity. This thesis includes five studies undertaken to explore the dynamics of emotional manipulation in the workplace. Study 1 was an online survey of Australians’ (N=234) self-reported ability and willingness to emotionally manipulate others, their emotional intelligence and their levels of primary and secondary psychopathy. The results of an exploratory factor analysis revealed that people’s self-reported ability and their self-reported willingness to emotionally manipulate are moderately related, indicating that being able to manipulate others does not necessarily equate to acting on this ability. Higher levels of primary psychopathy positively predicted emotional manipulation ability while secondary psychopathy positively predicted emotional manipulation willingness. The results indicated that the anti-social and impulsive traits central to secondary psychopathy might precipitate engagement in emotionally manipulative behaviours. The results of Study 1 suggested a measure of one’s ability to emotionally manipulate may not necessarily capture enacted behaviours. Therefore, Study 2 compared people’s willingness, rather than their ability, to manipulate others in both non-work and workplace contexts, in an online survey of Australian employees (N=567). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed two distinct forms of emotional manipulation: malicious (overt attempts to induce negative emotions) and disingenuous (items reflecting insincerity and deceit). The Disingenuous factor (unlike the malicious factor) included the work and nonwork emotional manipulation willingness items, indicating that context does not influence these deceptive tactics. The results suggest that manipulating others disingenuously might be more habitual than contextually driven, perhaps because it is easier to conceal self-driven motives by using covert forms of emotional manipulation. The contextual influence of the workplace on malicious emotional manipulation suggested that that follow-up investigations were necessary to examine emotional manipulation in work-specific environments. To expand on the findings in Study 1 which examined the relationship between psychopathy and emotional manipulation in non-work contexts, Study 3 examined how malevolent personality traits, emotional intelligence and gender correlated with one’s willingness to manipulate others in work contexts. In a sample of Australian employees (N=756), emotional intelligence predicted disingenuous forms of emotional manipulation in females only. In females, the magnitude of correlations between the Dark Triad traits and both malicious and disingenuous forms of emotional manipulation was similar. In males, both forms of emotional manipulation most strongly correlated with Machiavellianism, followed by narcissism then psychopathy. Therefore, at work, higher emotional manipulation reflects more general antisocial behaviours in females, and a relentless drive to achieve goals (i.e., Machiavellian traits) in males. To assess the construct of emotional manipulation from a target’s (victim’s) perspective, Study 4 employed a qualitative analysis based on interviews with Australian individuals (N=23) who perceived themselves as targets of emotional manipulation in the workplace. Two pathways representing perceived emotionally manipulative behaviours and underlying motives were identified. In Pathway One, self-gain was perceived as the motive of emotionally manipulative behaviour classified as discrepant and divisive in nature. In Pathway Two, emotional immaturity was perceived as a contributor to behaviours perceived as relationally aggressive in nature (e.g., ostracism and undermining), that commenced following a rupture in a previously good working relationship with the perpetrator. Perpetrators in Pathway One were described as skilful in evading accountability, whilst those in Pathway Two remained steadfast in their opinions of not being at fault. The results suggest that there is a perceived level of sophistication in some emotionally manipulative behaviours compared with others. Potential reasons for a perpetrator’s tendency to be divisive were investigated in Study 5 in a sample of American Mechanical Turks and Microworkers (N=240). The study measured threat reactions to a hypothetical description of a socially cohesive workplace, one’s willingness to emotionally manipulate others, the Dark Triad and contingent self-esteem. Malicious emotional manipulation was a positive predictor of threat to social cohesion for both men and women. For males, higher levels of both psychopathy and contingent self-esteem significantly predicted threat to social cohesion. The results suggest that socially cohesive environments may pose a threat to agency (power and achievement) in males at work. The first unique finding of this thesis was that the construct of the dark side of emotional intelligence could be extended to the workplace. Second, trait psychopathy plays more of a role in emotional manipulation in females than males, suggesting the behaviour is more reflective of impaired interpersonal functioning. Third, a distinction can be made between more calculative uses of emotional manipulation for self-gain, and relationally aggressive behaviours that emerge after an incident between the target and perpetrator. Fourth, socially cohesive environments elicit stronger threat reactions in males with malevolent personality traits than in females, probably because men are more likely to value agentic rather than communal pursuits at work. An understanding that work processes (e.g., interventions, reward structures and organisation culture) are merely platforms for, or can even incentivise or encourage deviant behaviours, will help future victims and organisations manage emotionally manipulative behaviour.

Abstract:
Introduction: Some dimensions of perfectionism have been associated with traits of the dark triad, and it has recently been found that narcissism mediates the relationship between perfectionism and psychological distress (Araújo et al. 2017). In the context of the research on the relevance of the personality to health, it is important to consider a broad definition of health that, according to WHO, encompasses physical, psychological and social well-being. In this context, social functioning begins to be properly valued (Friedman & Kern 2014).Objectives: To analyze the role of perfectionism and the dark triad in social functioning. Methods: A total of 302 participants from general population (mean age = 31.97 ± 13.25 years old, 65.9% female, 67.5% unmarried) completed a set of self-response questionnaires including the Hewit & Flett's Multidimensional Scale of Perfectionism-13 (Soares et al. 2017), the Dark Triad-12 (Macedo et al. 2017) and the Social Adaptation Self-evaluation Scale (Martins et al. 2019).Results: Both dimensions of perfectionism (Self-oriented Perfectionism and Socially Prescribed Perfectionism) and traits of the dark triad (Psychopathy and Machiavellism) correlated significantly with dimensions of social functioning (Family Relations and Occupation, Resources and Appearance). Mediation analyses revealed that Socially Prescribed Perfectionism potentiates the negative effect of Psychopathy on Family Relationships and on Occupation, Appearance, and Resources.Discussion and Conclusion: The combination of high levels of psychopathy and negative perfectionism constitute a detrimental combination to the quality of interpersonal relationships, confirming the socially aversive and potentially harmful combination of these traits to others.

The purpose of this investigation is to verify if the presence of Dark Triad personality traits in leaders is related to the communication behaviors of collaborators, namely Voice and Silence. It also intended to clarify whether the voice and silence constructs behaved independently or as a simple opposite, as well as to verify whether the participants identified Dark Triad traits in their leaders. In the present study, it will have been verified that only the Machiavellian-Psychopathic leaders related positively with the communication behaviors of the collaborator of negative valence (Silence of Rejection, Submissive Voice and Defensive Voice). As for the relations between the Machiavellian-Psychopathic leaders with the communication behaviors of the collaborator of positive valence, as well as the relations between the leader with a Narcissistic profile with the communication behaviors of the collaborators, either of positive valence or negative valence, they did not obtain significant relations. Regarding the behavior of the two communication variables, the results suggest an autonomous behavior of each other, that is, that the silence does not behave as only absence of voice.

Introduction: Perfectionism is a dimension of personality that has been associated with a variety of psychopathological conditions and is therefore considered a transdiagnostic process. Some studies have begun to show that the traits of the dark triad are related in a distinct way to the dimensions of perfectionism, and to the psychological distress, namely stress and anxiety, but studies that focus on combinations of these traits are still insufficient. Objectives: To investigate the relationship between the dimensions of perfectionism and the dark triad, and, more specifically, to analyze the role of these traits in the levels of stress, depression and anxiety.Materials and Methods: 245 students (69.5% female) from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, mean age 21.30 years (sd= 2.143; range: 17-33); non significantly different by gender: Female=21.38 ± 2.221 vs. Male=21.08 ± 2.005; t=- 968; gl=236; p>.01), completed the Portuguese versions of a set of self-reported questionnaires with good psychometric properties: Dirty Dozen, Multidimensional Perfectionism Scales of Hewitt & Flett-13 (EMP-H&F-13) and of Frost et al. (EMP-F-16), Psychological Entitlement Scale, Perfectionist Self-Presentation Scale and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21.Results: Narcissism was the only dimension of the dark triad to present positive and moderate correlations with several dimensions of perfectionism: Concern with errors (PEr); Personal standards (PP); Perfectionist Concerns (PreocPerf); Perfectionist efforts (EsfPerf); Perfectionist self-presentation (AAP) and Concern for mistakes in public (PEP). Psychopathy and Machiavellianism had few significant correlation coefficients, and these were of low magnitude (with PEr, PP, Doubts about the actions). Only for the Stress dimension were predictors in the final regression models dimensions of perfectionism (PE, DA , EP, PreocPerf and PEP) and the dark triad (narcissism), all of which were partial mediators of the relationship between Narcissism and Stress. Narcissism was also a partial mediator of the relationship between the various dimensions of Perfectionism and Stress. Conclusions: Results suggest that the combination of narcissism and perfectionism may be equivalent to that of narcissistic perfectionism, which seems potentially relevant to further study the role of these dispositions in psychological distress. As the role of perfectionism, perfectionistic self-presentation and narcissism in stress levels has been demonstrated, we suggest that interventions that focus not only on the first, but also on the relationship between this and the other traits can help people regulate their levels of stress.

Abstract:
abstract: There has been an ongoing debate between the relative deterrent power of certainty and severity on deceptive and criminal activity, certainty being the likelihood of capture and severity being the magnitude of the potential punishment. This paper is a review of the current body of research regarding risk assessment and deception in games, specifically regarding certainty and severity. The topics of game theoretical foundations, balance, and design were covered, as were heuristics and individual differences in deceptive behavior. Using this background knowledge, this study implemented a methodology through which the risk assessments of certainty and severity can be compared behaviorally in a repeated conflict context. It was found that certainty had a significant effect on a person’s likelihood to lie, while severity did not. Exploratory data was collected using the dark triad personality quiz, though it did not ultimately show a pattern.

The main goal of this study was to provide further information on the study of the relationship between leaders’ dark triad traits (i.e., machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy) and their subordinates’ job satisfaction, as well as the moderating role of the subordinates’ dark triad traits in this relationship. A total of 312 health and rescue professionals participated in this study. These had to answer an online questionnaire that was made up with the portuguese versions of the Dirty Dozen (DD) and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire – Short Form (MSQ). The results showed that leaders with dark triad traits influence, in a negative way, their subordinates’ job satisfaction. Additionally, the results showed that subordinates with low levels of psychopathic traits have a moderating role in the relationship mentioned previously. This moderating effect does not happen if the subordinates have either machiavellian or narcissistic traits, or high levels of psychopathic traits.

Abstract:
Introduction: Perfectionism is a trait characterized by striving for flawlessness, for the setting of excessively high standards of performance and for a tendency to be overly critical about one’s behavior. Perfectionism has been conceptualized as a multidimensional construct, with three dimensions being considered: self-oriented/SOP, other-oriented/OOP and socially prescribed perfectionism/SPP. Narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism are widely known as the Dark Triad of personality. Despite being independent, these three personality dark traits share their social undesirability. OOP is currently on the spotlight, with focus being given to its hypothethical relationship with these dark personalities. Objective: To investigate the relationships between Perfecionism and the Dark Triad and their role on emotional intelligence and interpersonal behavior, namely social cognition, emotional competence, emotional regulation, self esteem and psychological well being.Method: Exploratory cross-sectional study. 245 University students [mean age=21.30±2.143] completed the following validated self-report questionnaires: Dirty Dozen; altruism facet of HEXACO-100; 13-item Hewitt & Flett’s Muldimensional Perfectionism Scale; the following dimensions of Frost et al.’s Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale: Concern over mistakes, Doubts about actions, Personal standards and Organization; Psychological Entitlement Scale; Perfectionistic Self-presentation Scale; Psychologycal Well-being Scale; 15-item Emotional Skills and Competence Questionnaire; Reading the Mind in the Eyes test. We also evaluated two composite dimensions of perfectionism: Perfectionistic strivings and Perfectionistic concerns, using both multidimensional perfectionism scales (Hewitt & Flett’s and Frost et al.’s).Results: Dimensions of the Dark Triad were positively correlated with Perfectionism, except for Organization, and negatively correlated with positive outcomes. Perfectionism also showed negative relationships with those outcomes, except for OOP, which was positively associated to self-esteem and psychological well-being. Mediation analyses showed Perfectionism and perfectionistic self-presentation dimensions which mediated the relationship between traits of the Dark triad / altruism and the outcomes had negative effect coefficients.Discussion and Conclusion: Perfectionism and dark personalities were positively correlated and had strong negative relationships with positive outcomes, revealing their maladaptive character. The negative coefficients in the meadiation models shows that low levels of those traits positively influence benefic intra and interpersonal consequences. Results concerning OOP are not in line with previous findings and are somehow surprising as they reveal a positive facet of that trait. Therefore, it would be interesting, in future studies, to investigate this Perfectionism dimension more deeply.

Abstract:
Individuals learn to influence and manipulate others to function as part of society. Machiavellianism captures one’s willingness to orchestrate the behaviour of others against their interests, rights, and well-being. Research focuses primarily on a single Machiavellianism dimension. This thesis, however, contends that Machiavellianism comprises two correlated dimensions: a views dimension that captures one's cynical and distrusting view of humanity and the world, and a tactics dimension that captures one’s willingness to endorse exploitative and amoral behaviours when deemed advantageous. This thesis aimed to develop a stronger understanding of each dimension, and this required developing stronger psychometric instruments. The secondary aim was to test the presupposition of no psychopathological cost to Machiavellianism. After an initial foray into Machiavelli and Machiavellianism in the first two chapters, Chapter 3 identifies a robust Machiavellianism factor-structure and how each dimension relates to psychopathological domains in 1478 US and 218 Australian participants. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that Machiavellianism comprises two robust dimensions which could be reliably captured through a 10-item subset of the Mach-IV scale, named Two-Dimensional Mach-IV (TDM-IV). Further, Machiavellian views associated with all major psychological domains, while Machiavellian tactics related only to the externalising and thought dysfunction domains. Machiavellianism is two-dimensional, with each dimension having distinctive psychopathological implications. The study in Chapter 4 investigates whether these two dimensions are universal, or merely measurement artefacts within Study 1. If universal, this research further aimed to develop a nomological network to better understand the nature of each dimension. International collaborators shared 15 datasets, which comprisedover 17,000 participants. The two-factor structure was reproducible and structurally equivalent across cultures, languages, types of respondent, response category length, age, and gender. Further, each dimension was situated within a different constellation of broad personality traits, developmental pathways, emotionality, and behaviour. Therefore, the two dimensions appear to be core aspects of Machiavellianism and need to be independently captured in future research. The TDM-IV derives from the Mach-IV, inheriting many of its psychometric concerns that reduce the accuracy of its inferences, such as confusing item wording and not accounting for acquiesces appropriately. To overcome these weaknesses, Chapter 5 presents the development and validation of the Two-Dimensional Machiavellianism Scale (TDMS). The TDMS had excellent psychometric properties in six independent samples involving over 3800 participants, based on confirmatory factor analysis, longitudinal structural equation modelling, and item response theory. The scale provided invariant measurement across all samples and a test-retest sample, was internally consistent, and provided most information in the low to high average range. This study demonstrates confirmatory and discriminatory validity with existing measures of Machiavellianism, broader personality taxonomies, socio-political attitudes, psychopathy, narcissism, and morality vignettes. Finally, Chapter 6 explicates this two-dimensional Machiavellianism construct and discusses key areas for future investigation, including latent profiles, longitudinal modelling of each dimension’s development, and cross-cultural equivalence. Together, this research demonstrates that: a) Machiavellianism comprises two distinct dimensions, b) the TDMS, as a psychometrically robust measure of Machiavellianism, should replace current measures of Machiavellianism, and c) the presupposition of psychopathological immunity among Machiavellians is false.

The present research aims to understand (1) the effect of two personality variables (aversive personality traits and personal values) on self-perceived performance of organizational citizenship behaviors and also to question (2) whether personal values can have a mediation / moderation effect in the relation between this type of traits and the organizational citizenship behaviors. Regarding our first question, concerning the dimensions of personality traits, only narcissism has a significant and negative effect on the relationship with organizational citizenship behaviors and both of the dimensions of personal values, openness to change and self-transcendence, have a positive and significant effect on the relationship with organizational citizenship behaviors. Regarding our second question, it was not possible to prove any moderation / mediation effect of personal values in the relationship between dark triad dimensions and organizational citizenship behaviors.

Abstract:

Cybercrime and online scams are rampant in today’s tech-savvy world. In the past, scammers relied heavily on emails to contact potential victims but today, the presence and widespread usage of social networking platforms and e-commerce businesses has increased the availability of potential victims and made them easily accessible. It could be assumed that since unsuspecting users seek various products or services online - rentals, booking trips, seeking jobs, dating, it makes them easy targets for scammers yet, it is not just individual users who suffer from fraud, but organizations and institutions as well. A study at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Research found that cybercrime costs the global economy up to approximately 540 billion euros annually. There is plenty of research on the technical measures that individuals and organizations may take to prevent themselves from falling prey to fraudsters, however, research trends in the recent past have shifted towards analyzing the human element present in the scenarios. Researchers have argued that identifying the underlying psychological and sociological factors used by fraudsters could help tackle the very root cause of such fraudulent attacks. While there exists some research focusing on the experiences and psychology of victims of these attacks as well as the countermeasures that can be taken to protect them from such attacks, there is little research on the psychology and motivation of those who commit online fraud. This study aims to identify the psychological factors that affect the predilection of scammers to commit online fraud.
