Abstract:

Abstract:
There is an emerging international phenomenon of new drugs that have not previously existed being manufactured and then traded over the Internet. In many cases law enforcement agencies and customs have problems keeping track of all these new drugs causing them to have problem to make appropriate responses to the situation. Because of this measures are now taken to discover these new drugs early as they emerge by developing systems raising warnings when they recognize patterns of new drug trends. This project investigates ways to find these new drugs as they appear and are being discussed on the Web. Techniques able to interpret the semantic meaning of words, such as the technique random indexing, which has the ability to describe the meaning of words in vectors, are investigated and used to process text gathered from appropriate Internet sources. It is shown that this technique has the capacity to find and extract drug names from text and could be an appropriate component of future systems discovering new drugs being discussed on the Internet.

In this article, we propose a reference model to identify the maturity level of the cyber intelligence threat process. This proposal considers the dark web as an important source of cyber threats causing a latent risk that organizations do not consider in their cybersecurity strategies. The proposed model aims to increase the maturity level of the process through a set of proposed controls according to the information found on the dark web. The model consists of three phases: (1) Identification of information assets using cyber threat intelligence tools. (2) Diagnosis of the exposure of information assets. (3) Proposal of controls according to the proposed categories and criteria. The validation of the proposal was carried out in an insurance institution in Lima, Peru, with data obtained by the institution. The measurement was made with artifacts that allowed to obtain an initial value of the current panorama of the company. Preliminary results showed 196 emails and passwords exposed on the dark web of which one corresponded to the technology manager of the company under evaluation. With this identification, it was diagnosed that the institution was at a “Normal” maturity level, and from the implementation of the proposed controls, the “Advanced” level was reached.

Abstract:

Abstract:
There is in the cyberspace a dark and hidden web called Dark Web. With this bias, this study aimed to topograph the Dark Web and its non-places in the Cyberspace, with the following specific objectives: gather briefly visible folds of the cyberspace; characterize the invisible folds of the cyberspace; investigate the specificities of the Dark Web in relation to definition, location , access, content, and search engines; contextualize its non-places according to the precepts by Augé (2012 ) and Bauman (2001 ) and construct a Conceptual Map to show the topography of the Dark Web graphically. As a methodological approach this research was based on the informal inductive method using a form to collect data in the Dark Web. The formal deductive method was used by means of a theoretical corpus from the concept of non-places for the Dark Web. It was a basic-natured study with documentary design and qualitative approach. In the visible folds of cyberspace, the Visible, Indexable or Surface Web, Web 2.0 or Social, Web 3.0 or Semantic were conceptualized. As for the invisible folds, we sought to define the Invisible Web or Deep Web, the Hidden Web, the Private Web and the Truly Invisible Web. The Dark Web was discussed as the deepest, darkest fold of cyberspace and the Darknet was dialogued as representative of a dark internet for networks like Tor, Freenet and I2P. The main results show that the informational content of the Dark Web are mostly related to illicit activities involving crimes belonging to the red pill from the film The Matrix. It is assumed that, with observations of the environment, 80% of the contents of the environment are on the red pill side and 20% on the blue pill side. It was considered that the positive aspects of the Dark Web is the anonymous navigation, free from advertisements and statistical information that generate profitable business, to search engines, and also the fact of ruling out possible espionage. In order to provide privacy in cyberspace, navigating the invisible folds as in the Dark Web are also options that are considered good practices in the environment. Searches carried out through a mechanism that operates both on the surface and in the Dark Web, are also highlighted in this research. It was also possible to observe that, due to lack of identity, relationship and historicity with invisible folds as the Dark Web, this becomes a non -place in essence. The lack of civility and human interaction and the characteristic of being a temporary place once again testified that the Dark Web is a non-place. The Conceptual Map about the Dark Web aimed to demonstrate the topography of the environment, the conceptual discoveries and the relation of the studied object with the other scattered matter mainly in the folds of cyberspace. It is believed that the results obtained from this study may contribute to the Information Science (IS) and broaden horizons for further research on the topic that is unprecedented in Brazil.

Abstract:
Surveys of the cosmic large-scale structure carry opportunities for building and testing cosmological theories about the origin and evolution of the Universe. This endeavor requires appropriate data assimilation tools, for establishing the contact between survey catalogs and models of structure formation. In this thesis, we present an innovative statistical approach for the ab initio simultaneous analysis of the formation history and morphology of the cosmic web: the BORG algorithm infers the primordial density fluctuations and produces physical reconstructions of the dark matter distribution that underlies observed galaxies, by assimilating the survey data into a cosmological structure formation model. The method, based on Bayesian probability theory, provides accurate means of uncertainty quantification. We demonstrate the application of BORG to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data and describe the primordial and late-time large-scale structure in the observed volume. We show how the approach has led to the first quantitative inference of the cosmological initial conditions and of the formation history of the observed structures. We then use these results for several cosmographic projects aiming at analyzing and classifying the large-scale structure. In particular, we build an enhanced catalog of cosmic voids probed at the level of the dark matter distribution, deeper than with the galaxies. We present detailed probabilistic maps of the dynamic cosmic web, and offer a general solution to the problem of classifying structures in the presence of uncertainty. The results described in this thesis constitute accurate chrono-cosmography of the inhomogeneous cosmic structure

Abstract:
Not all designs have the user's best in mind. Dark patterns are web design whose goal is to exploit, deceive and negatively affect the consumer. Based on this, the purpose of this study is to give consumers an increased understanding of how they can be affected by dark patterns in their everyday lives. The question "How effective are dark patterns in e-commerce in order to negatively affect consumers' decisions?" was investigated through the use of a web-based survey. Through this survey, the respondents answered questions about their habits and experiences regarding situations where dark patterns are common on e-commerce sites. The study has focused on dark patterns called hidden costs, hidden information, countdown timers, limited-time messages and low stock messages. The survey has revealed that hidden costs was the dark pattern that most effectively fulfills its purpose of negatively affecting the consumer. Limited-time messages were also shown to have a clear impact on consumers' decision-making when purchasing online. Countdown timers as well as low stock messages were shown to have low efficiency in affecting consumers, meanwhile, data regarding hidden information could not show reliable results and needs further research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The anisotropic large-scale distribution of matter is made of an extended network of voids delimited by sheets, with filaments at their intersection which together form the cosmic web. Matter that will later form dark matter halos and their galaxies flows towards compact nodes at filaments' intersections and in the process, retains the imprint of the cosmic web. In this thesis, I develop a conditional version of the excursion set theory which, using a model of a large-scale filament, enables me to show that anisotropic environment have an impact on the formation history of dark matter halos. The cosmic web then has a role in the formation of halos and their galaxies. I then build a model that is able to capture the evolution of the cosmic web (halo mergers, but also filament and wall mergers) that can be used to better constrain galaxy formation models. The model predicts that an excess of anisotropic accretion is expected in filaments compared to nodes, so that the formation history of galaxies is biased. The effect of anisotropic accretion on galaxy formation is then studied using hydrodynamical simulations and a novel numerical method tailored to accurately follow the accretion history of the gas. I show that the angular momentum is transported efficiently from the cosmic web down to the inner halo, where gravitational torques redistribute it to the disk and the inner halo

Abstract:
This thesis details the theoretical framework, methods, and results of the design project “Log In or Sign up”. The result of this project is an ebook sharing the same title. It consists of short stories and poems that revolve around digital surveillance and its effects on the self and society. The writings explore how the digital sur- veillance ecosystem affects our behavior and self-image in ways that we might not even realize. The context is our digital lives in a time where we rely more and more on the internet for our daily activities. The writings attempt to portray the emo- tions we go through while using digital platforms that are designed to extract our personal data. The stories and poems are presented in an interactive layout. Along with the aforementioned topics this thesis also addresses the responsibility of design in creating advanced digital surveillance methods created by companies such as Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft. For example, through the gami- fication of social media, deceptive presentation of data protection rights, and cura- tion of content for emotional effect.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The first stars in the Universe are thought to have formed in high dark matter density minihalos about 200 million years after the Big Bang. If these stars were able to contract dark matter into their stellar core while forming, some of them might have turned into dark stars (DSs) powered by the heat from dark matter annihilation. The possibilities for detection of DSs with the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), scheduled for launch in 2021, is investigated in this work. With DS models generated in Spolyar et al. (2009) and atmosphere spectra from Gustafsson et al. (2008), spectral analysis has been carried out in MATLAB to find the unique colors of DSs compared to galaxies generated in Zackrisson et al. (2017) at z ≈ 7 − 11. It was found that lower temperature DSs (Teff ≤ 7800K) are distinguishable from galaxies and that they would be bright enough to be detected with the JWST provided a magnification factor of µ ≈ 160−1000 with the use of gravitational lensing. More recent DS models reveal that the DS of temperature Teff = 7800K is detectable even without the use of gravitational lensing. However, the probability of finding one today is really small due to DSs’ presumably short lifetime. The results of this work are hoped to give a better understanding of the properties of DSs and to increase the probability of finding one in the large imaging survey carried out by the JWST.

Abstract:
Along with the rise of the Internet human interaction, communication and organisaiton have come to see new opportunities. In this study we will explore the fringes of the internet to explore a forum discussing thaimassage with sexual services also known as Happy Ending. Thanks to netnographic methods and sociological and criminological theory we will put the sex buyer in a social context. Extra focus is given to the first timer. The results of this study shows that criminal or deviant behavior can be learned from a forum online. In particular that the first time sexbuyer gets inspiration from and help to learn how to become a sexbuyer. Other results include the organisational setup surrounding the analyzed forum as well as a brief quantitative calculation on occurences of Happy Endings.

Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA
We Dare Not Say is an anthology of seven interlinked short stories with the general theme of intergenerational trauma among coloured families in Cape Town. The stories are arranged in a montage of internally, variably and externally focalised narratives that span over a century, from 1900 through to 2015, and are fictionalised accounts of real events, categorising them as biographical fiction. Some of the specific topics covered in the stories include incest, molestation, substance abuse, mental illness and humour as a coping mechanism. The body of work is conceived in the context of the twentieth century trauma narrative, the complexities of which run as undercurrents through most of the important English literary works created in South Africa since the 1800s up until John M. Coetzee, but which has often lacked a female perspective, especially women of colour. The stories in this volume aim to depict a group of people, who, through centuries of oppression in the form of serfdom, servitude and segregation, have developed various coping mechanisms to make sense of their own identity in an absurdly cruel social landscape. The stories focus on the inward turning of violence, substance abuse, silence and humour as survival mechanisms after generations of trauma that have been, in a sense, the hallmarks of coloured South Africa. The stories are told using a split narrative method, showing multiple viewpoints of the same story with perspectives ranging from young to old, crossing the gender divide in both time and space. Ultimately, We Dare Not Say, is a depiction of the complexities of lives lived under oppression, and the triumphs and challenges faced in trying to resolve, live through or deny the effects of such oppression on a group and the individuals that make up that group.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Web is constantly evolving, thanks to the 2.0 transition, HTML5 new features and the coming of cloud-computing, the gap between Web and traditional desktop applications is tailing off. Web-apps are more and more widespread and bring several benefits compared to traditional ones. On the other hand reference technologies, JavaScript primarly, are not keeping pace, so a paradim shift is taking place in Web programming, and so many new languages and technologies are coming out. First objective of this thesis is to survey the reference and state-of-art technologies for client-side Web programming focusing in particular on what concerns concurrency and asynchronous programming. Taking into account the problems that affect existing technologies, we finally design simpAL-web, an innovative approach to tackle Web-apps development, based on the Agent-oriented programming abstraction and the simpAL language.

Abstract:

Tens of billions of dollars are spent on manned and unmanned missions probing deeper into space, while 95% of Earth's oceans remain unexplored. The more intensive focus on space exploration is a historically recent phenomenon. For millennia until the mid-20th century, space and ocean exploration proceeded roughly at the same pace, driven by military and commercial interests as well as simple curiosity. Both date back to early civilization when star-gazers scanned the skies, and sailors and free-divers scoured the seas. Since the 1960s, however, the trajectories of exploration diverged dramatically. Cold War-inspired geopolitical-military imperatives propelled government funding of space research to an extraordinary level, while ocean exploration stagnated in comparison. Moreover, although the Cold War ended more than 20 years ago, the disparity in research efforts remains vast despite evidence that accelerating changes in our marine ecosystems directly threatens our wellbeing. This thesis reviews the history of space and ocean exploration through the Cold War to the present. It also dispels persistent misconceptions that led to the disparity in resources allocated between space and ocean exploration and argues for prioritizing ocean research.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this thesis was to gain a better understanding of the relatively new concept of Brand Hate. More specifically, how Brand Hate can occur in people with no to little experience with certain brands, so called non-customers. We want to believe that humans are a rational being that takes decisions based on all the available information and does not jump to conclusions before all options have been exhausted. But upon closer examination theoretical concepts such as brand love can be found. A concept that argues that users of a brand utilize the brand itself in order to internally identify values he or she holds, as well as showcasing those values and personality traits externally to others. With this theory as a basis the relatively new concept of Brand Hate was born. The new concept, posits that there has to be another side of the brand love, where people actually hate or dislike the brand. Up to this point very little research has been done within the area, and that is where the authors of this thesis saw an opportunity to fill a research gap. There has been no previous research attempting to understand WHY these negative feelings comes to present themselves within people. But as soon as the work on the thesis had started another opportunity presented itself, it seemed as though people hate or dislike brands that they themselves does not even use. As a result non-customers became the focal point of investigation of this thesis.  The research itself included three different focus groups, with in total nineteen respondents that discussed a wide variety of topics. During the sessions the discussions touched upon what brands they disliked, why they disliked them and how the respondents identified with other groups of people. This gave the authors the ability to gain a deeper understanding of the psychological reasoning behind why certain brands the respondents did not use were severely hated or disliked.    The findings from the research seem to point in one very specific direction, group identification is an integral reason why non-customers started to hate or dislike brands. No matter how good companies are creating an appealing brand, that same brand will always risk to become distorted, as a result of the different targeted user groups. This research shows that people let their emotions and prejudices come between what they perceive a brand to be, and what companies want them to be. The result is people prematurely judging brands based upon the customers of that brand. If the respondents did not like the user group of a certain brand, that same brand would be inscribed with all the negative connotations with the user groups, thereby distorting the public brand image far from what the companies might intend them to be.

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with the ways in which the contemporary popular culture uses concepts and tools coming from religion and politics in order to exert some influence on our society. The length of American singer Madonna’s career makes her decades-long artistic expression a privileged locus where such concepts can be grasped and analysed, starting in the 1990’s. This provides the opportunity to better understand the means of expression in our contemporary world, together with what is at stake in popular culture

Abstract:
Globally, postpartum care is a neglected area in the continuum of maternal and newborn services. Facilitation interventions focusing on addressing local problems report positive results in improving the health of mothers and newborns in low-resource settings.  The aim of this thesis was to investigate a facilitation intervention to improve postpartum care at government-owned health institutions in a low-resource suburb of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. A before-and-after study design was used to describe and evaluate the intervention in this thesis. Data were collected using mixed methods in the intervention group and the control group, before and after the intervention and were used for making comparisons.   The baseline studies showed that postpartum care practices were next to non-existent at the institutions, that most healthcare providers had high levels of knowledge, positive attitudes towards postpartum care and declared themselves ready to engage in its improvement. Mothers coming with their newborns for immunisation were satisfied with the services.  The intervention to improve postpartum care involved healthcare providers in six geographical clusters, each including 3–6 institutions, with one facilitator for each cluster. Using a participatory approach, they facilitated colleagues in identifying and addressing the provision of postpartum care at institutions. Data were collected among healthcare providers, facilitators and mothers using: focus group discussions; questionnaires; observations; and interviews, and by making field notes, written at each institution.  In the intervention, facilitators and healthcare providers used four strategies to improve postpartum care:increasing awareness and knowledge on postpartum care of healthcare providers and mothers; mobilising professional and material resources; improving care routines, communication and documentation; and promoting an empowering and collaborative work style.  The endline evaluation showed that postpartum care was conducted in the intervention group with some care items performed for 80% of observed mothers. The quality grading, which involved nine experts and was based on national guidelines, showed that none of the healthcare providers reached the level of good quality of care. In the comparison group, postpartum care continued to be next to non-existent. The healthcare providers’ knowledge increased in both groups but to a higher extent in the intervention group. The t-test indicated a significant difference in knowledge between the intervention and comparison groups and between before and after the intervention in both groups. The difference in differences for knowledge was 1.3. The attitudes showed no major difference between baseline and endline in the intervention and comparison groups.  This facilitation intervention was an acceptable and applicable approach and indicates promising results in improving the quality of postpartum care and in increasing mothers’ attendance.

In third-century China, the huge political and intellectual mutations occurring after the collapse of the Han dynasty result in the awakening of a new self-consciousness of man and the emergence of new philosophical trends (the so called Dark Learning), or also an artistic activity breaking off with four centuries of Confucian orthodoxy. Music, which occupies a privileged position in the life of literati, evolves as well, as far as its traditional status and practice are both concerned. No more considered a tool of moralization for the sake of civilized order or social harmony, it becomes a private and free distraction, emancipated from political or any other pragmatic purpose. The conceptions of music appearing in this context of nascent aesthetics provide the subject matter of our research. Focusing on Ruan Ji 阮籍 (210-263) and Ji Kang 嵇康 (223-262), two leading figures of the well-known literati group “the Seven Sages of the bamboo grove” who were also famous poets, thinkers and musicians, we attempt to examine their aesthetic thought throughout their main writings on music, concerning issues such as the origins and nature of music, its moral or social functions, its political or macrobiotic use, its ethical or dietetic virtues, and also its relation to man’s emotions. The textual analysis is completed by the study of musical practices or gestures (Ruan Ji’s whistling, Ji Kang’s playing the zither), that illustrate the effective application of their ideas in concrete life. Therefore, aesthetics does not only consist in a mere discourse, but becomes a kind of ethos, in which the emancipation of music is inseparable from that of the individual himself, through his aesthetic experience

Abstract:
With the appearance of the Internet, open to everyone in 1991, criminals saw a big opportunity in moving their organisations to the World Wide Web, taking advantage of these infrastructures as it allowed higher mobility and scalability. Later on, in the year 2000, the first system appeared, creating what is known today as the Dark Web. This layer of the World Wide Web became quickly the option to go when criminals wanted to sell and deliver content such as match-fixing, children pornography, drugs market, guns market, etc. This obscure side of the Dark Web, makes it a relevant topic to study in order to tackle this huge network and help to identify these malicious activities and actors. In this master thesis, it is shown through the study of two datasets from the Dark Web, that we are surrounded by capable technologies that can be applied to these types of problems in order to increase our knowledge about the data and reveal interesting characteristics in an interactive and useful way. One dataset has 10 000 relations from domains living in the Dark Web, and the other dataset has thousands of data from just 11 specific domains from the Dark Web. We reveal detailed information about each dataset by applying di↵erent analysis and data mining algorithms. For the first dataset we studied domains availability patterns with temporal analysis, we categorised domains with machine learning neural networks and we reveal the network topology and nodes relevance with social networks analysis and core-periphery model. Regarding the second dataset, we created a cross matching information web graph and applied a name entity recognition algorithm which ended in a tool for identifying entities within dark web’s domains. All of these approaches culminated in an interactive web application where we publicly not only display the entire research but also the tools developed along with the project (https://darkor.org).

Abstract:
The fast development of communication technologies, chiefly the internet, led to the need of paying more attention to human factors that go beyond computing sciences. With the evolution of the means of communication of products, companies and institutions, mainly after the beginning of the 21st century, the web is more incorporated in people’s lives. There were significant changes in the way people use and access internet. As a result, the online communication tools had to follow the change, modifying the way web platforms are designed. This paper aims at planning and developing a communication strategy for the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology at the University of Coimbra, through the design of a website and a brochure, based on the transmedia concept. The project consists of a strategically planned action which involves the use of multiple interrelated and synchronized channels, generating several interconnected points. The goal is to produce a means of communication with the outside, providing information about the courses, the teachers, the students’ academic work and news about the department. This work is the result of the integration of the theoretical knowledge acquired during the Master’s Degree in Design and Multimedia and the consolidation of matters such as interface technologies, interaction design and web design. The image of the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology is currently presented through the institutional site of the University of Coimbra. However, this platform seems to be an unsatisfactory way to achieve the concrete objectives of the department. This way, this project tries to answer to a real requirement, as it attempts to offer a proficient, involving and stimulating digital means that allows DARQ to promote its distinctive and unique “brand”.

Abstract:
Technological advances have highly increased the number of companies in the Agricultural, Livestock, and forestry sectors that invest in the use of technology to improve the daily processes and it's competitive in the market. However, the literature lacks data on the productivity and satisfaction of employees after the digital transformation of processes in companies of these sectors. This dissertation describes a digital transformation of the manual processes of a forest company through the Design Science Research methodology. The manual processes were replaced by a web-based solution that included a database developed using Postgress with a special extension to this specific area, Backend developed in JAVA, and Frontend in Angular7. To evaluate if the goals were achieved some tests were carried out: individual tests, tests of the system, integration, and acceptance. In the end, it was assessed if the levels of satisfaction and productivity were changed after the digital transformation, though questionaries and interviews. The results showed improvement in both employee satisfaction and productivity, similar to companies in other sectors. On the other hand, in the future, this study should be replicated in a bigger number of companies in the forest sector.
