Abstract:
In 2006, Daros Latinamerica – one of the most comprehensive collections dedicated to Latin American contemporary art in the world – acquired a building, designed by the architect Francisco Joaquim Bethencourt da Silva (1831-1912) and listed as official historical heritage of the city of Rio de Janeiro. After seven years of refurbishment, Casa Daros and its library opened its doors on 23 March 2013. The library has maintained and improved its collection about contemporary Latin American art – considered unique in the region – ever since, with a view to motivating and increasing the amount of research on the subject in Brazil. At the same time, the library team plays an important role in the preparation of the programming planned in the cultural centre – considered a platform for art, education, and communication – and also during the events at Casa Daros, providing support for the researchers’ needs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
At a time when issues related to Open Access to scientific information are daily discussed, it is considered valid to better understand research data repositories and how they are organized. Thus, this study carried out a mapping of the research data repositories currently active in Portugal, in order to analyze its organization. Were considered issues about the theme of the repository, the type of content stored, the metadata used in documents’ description and under which collections/categories the content is aggregated. Through the consultation of the re3Data and OpenDoar portals, 67 repositories were identified, of which seven were selected for the study: only open access repositories that contained data from scientific research, maintained by Portuguese institutions. The small number of repositories, as well as items stored in the analyzed repositories, points to the fact that the state of the art of research data repositories in Portugal is still at an early stage.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Introduction and objective The authors aimed to collect and summarize all the information they found on the subject, as a starting point for other projects that are considered pertinent in the context of the occupational health of these professionals. The main risks associated with Cadmium are distributed through diverse medical contexts (although with different consensos) in neurology, cardiovascular system, reproduction/ obstetrics, pediatrics, nephrology, oncology, pulmonology, ophthalmology, gastrointestinal tract, endocrinology and orthopedics/ rheumatology. Methodology This scoping review used search engines as PubMed; Web of Science; Science Direct; Academic Search Complete; CINALH; MedLine; Database of Abstracts and Reviews; Central Register of Controlled Trials; Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews; Nursing and Allied Health Collection; MedicLatina and RCAAP. Content or Results In this professional context, one document was found mentioning that in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries pigments associated with cadmium, although toxic, but still used today, were discovered; the most relevant are (in frequency and toxicity) yellow and red cadmium, used since 1820 and 1910, respectively. Another article emphasized that during the 19th century yellow pigments were created with cadmium sulphide, and this color also depended on the addition of elements such as zinc, selenium and barium. Discussion There is so little bibliography on Cadmium’s medical risks in Conservators-Restorers that the authors have chosen to include in this section some data regarding other professionals who may also contact with this agent. Among these, the artists who elaborate (or have elaborated in the past) works of art with pigments with Cadmium, may be the most adequate, although also on these the bibliography is very reduced. It is believed that famous painters were exposed, namely Rubens, Renoir, Duffy and Klee. Limitations The authors made efforts to make their research exhaustive but, once completed, they realized that they did not find relevant data on Cadmium dosing in Conservation and Restoration workplaces in general, nor did they indicate which techniques may be used or which are preferable, such as biological monitoring. No evaluation of the associated risk was found for this professionals. Collective or individual protection measures were not mentioned in the bibliography consulted (even in generic terms, let alone specifying models and/ or materials). Conclusions It has long been known that concrete and serious harm is associated with Cadmium. However, the Conservation and Restoration sector is still very little studied in the context of Occupational Health and the risks of eventual contact with Cadmium are no exception. It would be very pertinent to have motivated teams to study this sector and to fill some of the limitations found, not developed in the international literature.

Abstract:
Based on this empirical object, we have tried to identify the challenges related to the creation and maintenance of collections of photographs of works of art in an electronic environment, considering the informational needs of specialized users. In order to deal with these challenges, we aimed at doing an exploratory study regarding the particularities of the creation and maintenance of collections of photographs of works of art in an electronic environment. Starting with the review of the existing literature, it was possible to identify beforehand that the problem is not technological indeed, i.e., it is not about the use of the best software, but it lies instead in the process of creation and maintenance of collections of photographs of works of art. In order to understand this process, it was necessary to study the characteristics of the collection of photographs of works of art of the information service of an institution which offers courses in the field of Visual Arts, as well as the informational behaviour of the potential users of this collection. For this case study, the following data collection techniques were used: unstructured direct observation, unstructured interview and a questionnaire. It was possible to observe: the photographs of works of art are used for educational ends, and online databases constitute an appropriate solution to the demand for photographs; users do weekly research for photographs; the kinds of photographs most sought after are those of paintings and drawings; informants use the photographs for research in artistic creation and in theoretical art. Still, for the creation and maintenance of the database, some challenges need to be overcome, such as the definition of criteria regarding the technical characteristics of the photographs and their content, as well as issues of copyright. Among these challenges, the one that stands out concerns the identification of the visual information needs of specialized users, and of how the photographs of works of art will be used in the educational activities. In the case of the institution where this study was conducted, the main request was the inclusion, in its collection, of photographs of works of art produced by the artists of the institution. The study confirmed that users do not want a collection that is nothing but the mirroring of the collections of museums, galleries, or other information services. It was also possible to observe: how important it is to carry out studies about the use and the users of photographs of works of art, on a more regular basis; the adoption of a policy for the selection and development of collections of physical or digital photographs of works of art is indispensable; and, for the creation of an online database, the adoption of metadata standards and the considering of issues of interoperability are essential, but these measures depend on studies and reflections, such as those indicated in this work.

Abstract:
Bayesian networks are a widely used formalism for data analysis, modelling, and decision support in various domains. Currently, there is a need for techniques and tools that automatically build Bayesian networks from massive text or literature data. Collecting people’s perception of the problems they face in their daily lives generates a great deal of textual information. Textual descriptions increase as new data collections are made. Due to the lexical differences between different regions of a country, it is necessary to constantly update the new modelled data.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the Outsider Art Project. “Outsiders” are highly innovative artists who have been aesthetically and socially marginalized because of their status as psychiatric patients, homeless, recluses, people with disabilities, migrants and ethnic minorities. Because of the need to characterize outsider art on a formal basis, this project is aimed at the automatic discovery of the semantic boundaries of outsider art in the context of digital humanities. From the methodological point of view, the Outsider Art Project is organized around three tasks: collecting a corpus of outsider art, generating a large dataset of digital images about outsider art and building the first ontology of outsider art.

Abstract:
Studies on online purchases abound, but are rarely on social media or social networking service (SNS) to highlight its influence on participants with regards to online purchases. This paper dares to do this. The SNS, although it was envisaged to be a platform for socialisation, has transmuted into a business model that is actually impacting on sales volume of organisations. Predictably, it could be said that the sustainability of this new business phenomenon depends on the continuance patronage of the SNS participants. This study investigated the dynamics impacting on SNS participant to find out whether what makes them purchase through it depends on habit or sheer influence. The study embarked on an online data collection process and performed a structural equation modelling (SEM) with the aid of a partial least square (PLS) program known as PLS-SEM.

EsAC was developed for encoding monophonic music, with some of the particular demands of folk-music research in mind (analysis, printing, sorting, maintenance of related documentation, etc.). The general architecture of the system provides for various data capture/input, manipulation, and output processes. Data can be exchanged with encoding systems such as DARMS, Score, and KERN, as well as TeX, PCX, and MIDI formats. EsAC is used by researchers in Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Italy, and Luxembourg. The repertory of encoded musical works currently numbers about 20,000; the majority of pieces are German and Polish folksongs. The Institute for the Arts would like to build a central database of international data while developing a system for the distribution of software tools, as well as for data collection and distribution.

Abstract:
In this article, a collaborative project to build the first parallel corpus Amuzgo-Spanish is described. The goal of this project is to provide a source with data collected from colloquial speech in Amuzgo (glossed and translated into Spanish) for research, as well as for the development of tools for scarce resources languages. The processes carried out to compile the corpus are described according to the following phases: i) data collection in Amuzgo by means of linguistic fieldwork; ii) data transcription; iii) acoustic data processing with Praat to carry out spectrographic analysis; iv) glossing and translating data into Spanish; v) semiautomatic alignment of translations. Finally, an open access tool is presented because of the corpus release.

Abstract:
Outeiro dos Castelos de Beijós (COCB) is a well-known archaeological site for its Late Bronze Age occupation (Senna-Martinez, 1993, 1994, 1995/1996a, 2000a and 2000b; Senna-Martinez e Nunes, 1993; Senna-Martinez e Ventura, 2008a; Senna-Martinez and Pedro, Eds. 2000). However, another anthropic use of this space, in the Early Neolithic, was still, without adequate dissemination. This happens despite the fact that part of the collections are on display at the Municipal Museum of Carregal do Sal and are part of the respective catalogue (Pinto, 2006; Senna-Martinez, 2006). In the 2004/2005 academic year, two students from FLUL’s Degree in Archeology – and collaborators in this article – proceeded to draw and carry out the typological analysis, within the scope of their final seminar, respectively of the pottery and the lithic industry associated with the Ancient Neolithic occupation. Here we recuperate these academic efforts and integrate their contribution following what has been one of Uniarq’s best traditions. We will also try to integrate the new COCB data in the broader scope of the Neolithisation of the Mondego inland basin and of the Portuguese Centre/North.

"Production Micro-Processes Under high collectivism, determination of the division of labour within the productive unit and specification and management of the actual work pro-cesses were handled by the collectives, apparently in a rather democratic fashion. To some extent the collectives still discharge these functions, although now less through a collective democratic process and more by arrangement and supervision of contracts. How the collectives now arrive at a division of labour (on the basis of which to let contracts) is also an area for further research, although the general thrust of policies on planning and management would suggest a drift towards technocratic rather than participatory criteria and methods. Once the division of labour is determined and workers allocated within it, there are still the problems of managing and supervising the work process. Under high collectivism, this was handled by a combination of monitoring by elected local officials, direct mass participatory political processes (at work point meetings, for example), and continuous monitoring by other peasants working on the same job nearby (whose interest in maintaining certain stan-dards of work derived at least partly from the fact that their incomes depended - via the work point - on the economic performance of the collective as a whole). Now, management and supervision of the labour process is the responsibility of the contracting group or household. The peasants have lost control of the capacity to set work standards and monitor work performance for the collective as a whole; hence they have less control over its economic performance. Yet, if they still receive remuneration in work points, their incomes continue to depend on that performance. In this sense, they have been separated from the capacity to control some of the important forces which determine their livelihood. This is a key contradiction of the specialised and production contracting responsibility systems, which may have had something to do with their relatively rapid demise and the corresponding rise of 'con-tracting in a big way' to a predominant position. One major and still unresolved analytical problem revolves around the question of why Chinese peasants, who made high collectivism work satisfactorily for two decades, could abandon it so rapidly and utterly rather than embracing moderate reforms more fully. This analysis suggests that perhaps they preferred depending mainly on them-selves to a situation in which they depended on their neighbours but could not control or monitor them. Production Macro-Processes The state still plays a major role in agricultural planning. It is unclear whether the relationship between the lowest level of collective organisation - the team - and its superior units, and among its superior units, in the planning process has changed. Within the team, the method of implementing plans passed down from above now takes the form of regulation by contract with peasant producers. The scope of production planning and regulation has also been reduced, and restrictions on engaging in many sorts of sidelines have been lifted, so that the collectives and peasants have greater latitude to determine the nature of their production activities." Abstract:
Ordinances are documents issued by federal institutions that contain, among others, information regarding their staff. These documents are accessible through public repositories that usually do not allow any filter or advanced search on documents’ contents. This paper presents ACERPI, an approach which identifies the people mentioned in the ordinances to help the user find the documents of interest. ACERPI combines techniques to discover, obtain, convert and structure documents, extract information, and link employees entities. Experiments were performed on two real datasets and demonstrated a recall of 72.7% for our named entity recognition model trained with only 534 samples and F1 measure of 90% in the efficacy of the entity resolution technique.

Abstract:
Traffic events announcements such as jams and road closures are continuously reported by mobile and Web applications. This collection of spatio-temporal data is an important source of information for urban planning, and can be used to orchestrate a number of actions to mprove the mobility, such as traffic control, traffic lights synchronization and preventive maintenance. Such analysis usually involves computation of spatial relationships among data, and may involve location of landmarks, roads and different types of events. In this paper, we propose a Method for Indexing Traffic Events (MIDET) for querying spatio-temporal data, whose location can be represented as a point or collection of points. MIDET is based on a fixed-grid space-oriented partitioning. In order to tackle the data skew, each grid cell is associated with a set of blocks containing event records. Moreover, a bitmap index is used for filtering out blocks without retrieving the actual data. MIDET provides the following benefits: adoption of a simple bulk loading process to manage dynamic insertion streams, and in-memory spatial joins. We conducted an experimental study using real data obtained from Waze. MIDET’s query performance was compared with Postgis, which adopts an R-tree index structure.

Online reviews are readily available on the Web and widely used for decision-making. However, only a few studies on Portuguese sentiment analysis are reported due to the lack of resources including domain-specific sentiment lexical collections. In this paper, we present an effective methodology using probabilities of the Bayes’ Theorem for building a set of lexicons, called SentiProdBR, for 10 different product categories for the Portuguese language. Experimental results indicate that our methodology significantly outperforms several alternative approaches of building domain-specific sentiment lexicons.

Abstract:
Diversity has been promoted in image retrieval results using clustering algorithms to tackle queries, which refer to multiple information needs, e.g., due to ambiguity. Despite the effective results of diversity-aware methods, the image wealth of large collections and the subjectivity of human perception bring the semantic gap problem. This paper presents multimodal fusion approaches aimed at reducing the diversity gap with ensemble clustering and dimensionality reduction. The applied methods were evaluated by quantifying the clustering effectiveness in comparison to human decisions. The experimental results demonstrate the potential of these approaches to boost diversity-oriented engines and that they could improve state-of-the-art systems.

Abstract:
Set similarity join, which finds all pairs of similar sets in a collection, plays an important role in data cleaning and integration. Many algorithms have been proposed to efficiently answer set similarity join on single-attribute data. However, real-world data often contain multiple attributes. In this paper, we propose a framework to enhance existing algorithms with additional filters for dealing with multi-attribute data. We then present a simple, yet effective filter based on lightweight indexes, for which exact and probabilistic implementation alternatives are evaluated. Finally, we devise a cost model to identify the best attribute ordering to reduce processing time. Our experimental results show that our approach is effective and significantly outperforms previous work.

Abstract:
Author name ambiguity is one of the most challenging issues that can compromise the information quality in a scholarly digital library. For years, researchers have been searched for solutions to solve such a problem. Despite the many methods already proposed, the question remains open. In this study, we address the issue of producing a more accurate disambiguation function by means of applying data augmentation in the set of data training. We also propose a SyGAR-based data augmentation approach and evaluate our proposal on three collections commonly used in works about author name disambiguation task. The experimental results showed scenarios where improvements are possible in the author name disambiguation task. The proposal of data augmentation outperforms other data augmentation approach, as well as improves some machine learning techniques that were not specifically designed for the author name disambiguation task.

Abstract:
Decision-support systems benefit from hidden patterns extracted from digital information. In the specific domain of gastropod characterization, morphometrical measurements support biologists in the identification of land snail specimens. Although snails can be easily identified by their excretory and reproductive systems, the after-death mollusk body is commonly inaccessible because of either soft material deterioration or fossilization. This study aims at characterizing Brazilian land snails by morphometrical data features manually taken from the shells. In particular, we examined a dataset of shells by using different learning models that labeled snail specimens with a precision up to 97.5% (F1-Score = .975, CKC = .967 and ROC Area = .998). The extracted patterns describe similarities and trends among land snail species and indicates possible outliers physiologies due to climate traits and breeding. Finally, we show some morphometrical characteristics dominate others according to different feature selection biases. Those data-based patterns can be applied to fast land snail identification whenever their bodies are unavailable, as in the recurrent cases of lost shells in nature or private and museum collections.

Abstract:
Diversity-oriented searches retrieve objects not only similar to a reference element but also related to the different types of collections within the queried dataset. While such characterization is flexible enough to include methods originally from information retrieval, data clustering, and similarity searching under the same umbrella, diversity metrics are expected to be much less paradigm-biased in order to discriminate which approaches are more suitable and when they should be applied. Accordingly, we extend and implement a broad set of quality metrics from those distinct realms and experimentally discuss their trends and limitations. In particular, we evaluate the suitability of data clustering indexes, and similarity-driven measures regarding their adherence to diversified similarity searching. Experiments in real-world datasets indicate such measures are capable of distinguishing diversity methods from different paradigms, but they heavily favor the approaches of the same group – especially cluster indexes. As an alternative, we argue diversity is better addressed by a set of measures rather than a single quality value. Therefore, we propose the Diversity Features Model (DFM) that combines the perspectives of the competing approaches into a multidimensional point whose features are calculated based on the distance distribution within both retrieved and queried datasets. Empirical evaluations showed DFM compares different diversity searching approaches by considering multiple criteria, whereas overall winners can be found by ranking aggregation or visualized through parallel coordinates maps.

Currently, the diagnosis and monitoring of people affected by neurodegenerative diseases are made subjectively. Parkinson's disease (PD), for example, is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor part of the individual. The evaluation of PD usually is done through scales based on questionnaires. Thus, this research is dedicated to the study and development of a computational system capable of performing the collection, transmission and visual presentation of data related to the human movement, in order to assist the diagnosis and monitoring of PD.
