Abstract:

This article was inspired by the recent publication of a volume that brings together the Italian translation of Das Heilige and other important writings of Rudolf Otto. It explores in particular the reception of this theologian and philosopher of religion's thought in Italy during the first half of the twentieth century by such important figures as Ernesto Buonaiuti (who translated Das Heilige in 1926), Benedetto Croce, Giovanni Miegge and Piero Martinetti.

Abstract:

A fenomenologia de Husserl motivou uma viragem da filosofia da religião, no século XX, através das obras Das Heilige de Rudolf Otto e O sagrado e o profano de M. Eliade. Ambos partem da experiência religiosa concreta, não de conceitos abstratos de Deus e de religião, para fundamentar a crença religiosa na natureza humana. Otto fala do mysterium tremendum et fascinans na experiência do numinoso e Eliade do homo religiosus e do homo profanus.Abstract: Husserl’s phaenomenology caused a revolution in the philosophy of religion in the twentieth century with the studies Das Heilige of Rudolf Otto and The holy and the profane of M. Eliade. Both authors depart from the concret religious experience, not from the abstract concepts of God and religion, to ground the religious belief in the human nature. Otto speaks about the mysterium tremendum et fascinans in the numinous experience and Eliade about the experience of homo religiosus and the homo profanus.Keywords: Religious experience. Abstract:

Desde el ángulo específico de la psicología de la religión, el presente artículo pretende dar cuenta del aporte de Rudolf Otto en “Das Heilige” a la comprensión de la experiencia religiosa. Tomando como punto de partida el abordaje de las ciencias religiosas en donde Otto ha marcado un hito fundamental, se realiza a continuación un recorrido por autores que se ocuparon en forma positiva de la experiencia religiosa en el ámbito de la psicología. El artículo concluye dejando una puerta abierta hacia la investigación de la experiencia religiosa en el campo de las neurociencias de la religión.

Analisando a concepção de experiência religiosa apresentada por Rudolf Otto emDas Heilige, explicitamos a presença e a função da imaginação na mesma, mediante um aprofundamento dos pressupostos kantianos de Otto e de suas implicações teóricas. Em seguida corroboramos a função prático-existencial da imaginação religiosa tal como aparece no pensamento de Paul Ricoeur.Abstract: Our analysis of the conception of religious experience in Rudolf Otto’s Das Helige aims at explaining the presence of imagination and the role it plays in such an experience, with the intent of furthering Otto’s Kantian assumptions and their theoretical implications. Subsequently, the practical-existential role of religious imagination is corroborated by an examination of Paul Ricoeur’s thought.

Rede en religie lijken elkaar uitsluitende begrippen te zijn. Religieuze tradities verwijzen immers (meestal) naar een als transcendent beleefde werkelijkheid en transcendentie onttrekt zich, minstens voor een deel, aan ons bevattingsvermogen. Als voorwerp van religieuze overtuigingen gaat de transcendente werkelijkheid ons verstand te boven. Deze gedachte is op onnavolgbare wijze verwoord door Rudolf Otto in zijn bekende en populaire boek Das Heilige. Über das Irrationale in der Idee des Göttlichen und Sein Verhältnis zum Rationalen. Volgens Otto is er in het idee van het goddelijke een ‘rationeel deel’ dat door ons verstand gevat kan worden en binnen het gebied van te definiëren begrippen valt. Onder dat gebied ligt echter ‘een donkere diepte’ dat zich aan onze begrippen onttrekt: het Ganz Andere waar religies over spreken is uiteindelijk onzegbaar. Het is het irrationele in engere zin, dat niet gedacht kan worden en ingaat tegen het verstand. Een voorbeeld daarvan noemt Otto de verschijning van God aan Job, die gekenmerkt wordt door een boven elk begrip uitstijgende wonderbaarlijkheid. Toch ontgaat ons het irrationele niet: het onttrekt zich namelijk niet aan ons gevoel. Dankzij het gevoel kan men volgens Otto de irrationele momenten van het goddelijke op ‘een eigensoortige wijze begrijpen’.

Abstract:

En 1923, Rudolf Otto a rassemblé un certain nombre d’annexes à Das Heilige (1917) et, dans l’une de celles-ci, il rapprocha le bouddhisme zen et le mystique médiéval Maître Eckhart. Le point commun était que, tout comme la vie vit sans pourquoi, vit parce qu’elle vit, l’homme juste travaille pour travailler, et ainsi seulement il est véritablement libre. Quand, en 1965, Shizuteru Ueda publia sa thèse de doctorat sur Eckhart, il inclut une comparaison avec le zen reprenant ce thème. À la lumière de la dichotomie action-contemplation dans la tradition occidentale, nous examinons les similitudes et les différences que souligne Ueda entre Eckhart et le zen à cet égard et leur signification pour la pensée contemporaine. Dans les deux cas, la projection au-delà de Dieu se traduit par une nouvelle manière d’être et d’agir dans le monde : celui qui a expérimenté cette vacuité ne demande plus pourquoi, ne cherche plus et, pour cette raison, a trouvé.
