Abstract:
This report will be covering the creation of the Realtime-Updated Dashboard, made for Flex Applications. The Dashboard, which could be seen as an interactive pinboard, is a new product which will be implemented in Flex Applications existing system for employee administration. A deep-dive into the subject of information overload was also made during thedevelopment of the application. This was later used to question the design choices made. The results of this showed that there is no one correct way of designing an interface, but rather guidelines to help in certain situations. The application was written in the TypeScript language together with the framework Angular 2. The application was at first developed as a stand-alone project as there was no need for it to be integrated into the existing system from the start. This also gave a more relaxed environment while learning TypeScript and Angular2. The application was later integrated with the existing system. This integration was seen as a success as the handling of the data from the database worked as expected.

This project is about creating a Dashboard with suitable data models containing support ticket statistics for the company Sigma IT Consulting. The work flow used by Sigma today is to manually log in to the system to see the support ticket statistics, which can be a tedious and time consuming process. Furthermore, Sigma do not have any monitoring system for checking the health of their web application services. They have a need for an internal Dashboard containing this information with regularly updates. Our solution is to design suitable data models and implement them within a Dashboard application.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the design and implementation of a dynamic user-definable dashboard. The user will be able to define conditions dynamically, which will filter out and save only the data he needs. The application will support the changing of the condition definitions and the display of the graphs after they were created. The current implementations available on the internet are usually solutions designed to fit only one type of project and are not designed to meet general guidelines for a dashboard. The dashboard is designed for a smooth cooperation with high load databases and therefore not to slow down the whole solution.

Abstract:

Reinking, Jeffrey. "The Diffusion of Digital Dashboards: An Examination of Dashboard Utilization and the Managerial Decision Environment." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2013. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/6018.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation consists of three related studies examining the diffusion of digital dashboard technology throughout today's organizations. Dashboards, once reserved for the executive level, are now available to managers at the lower levels of the organization. For these managers, dashboards have become an integral part of their work life to support their decision environment, to provide consistency in measures, to monitor performance, and to communicate information throughout the organization. Prior research in the practice literature has shown that dashboards improve managerial performance and organizational performance as well as communicate organizational goals and objectives; however, empirical research has not been conducted in this area to confirm this anecdotal evidence. Using three theories, the phenomenon surrounding the diffusion of dashboards to the lower levels of the organization are examined based on 1) dashboards as a source of interactive management control and strategy alignment, 2) the impact of dashboard quality on strategy alignment, decision environment, and performance, and 3) the impacts on dashboard utilization from the antecedents of information content and task uncertainty and the consequences of user satisfaction and managerial performance. The first study investigates why dashboards have been diffused to the lowers levels of today's organizations. The primary focus of this study is to develop an understanding about the extent of dashboard utilization by decision-makers and the antecedents and consequences of utilization that is responsible for the widespread acceptance of this technology. The data for this study is collected and analyzed through an explanatory cross-sectional field study utilizing a semi-structured questionnaire. Using data from interviews with 27 managers, a framework is developed that indicates strategy alignment and dashboards associated with interactive management control are the primary antecedents that drive dashboard diffusion. The dimensions of dashboard system quality and dashboard information quality mediate the relationship between an interactive dashboard and the extent of dashboard utilization, which leads to higher levels of managerial performance and organizational performance. This study contributes to the dashboard, strategy, and MCS literature by revealing that dashboards are not isolated technologies, rather they play an important role in the execution of strategy at the operational levels of an organization. In addition, dashboards can also function as an interactive management control, which leads to high levels of diffusion of dashboards throughout organizations. Prior strategy literature has examined strategy alignment at the higher levels and this study extends this research stream by investigating strategy alignment at the lower operational levels of the organization. The second study utilizes the IS Success Model to explore the impacts of the antecedents of dashboard system quality and dashboard information quality on the managerial decision environment in addition to the resulting consequences or 'net benefit' of managerial performance and organizational performance. A field survey is used to collect data from 391 dashboard using managers to enable the analysis of the relationships predicted in the theoretical model. The theoretical model is analyzed utilizing PLS. The results show that two dimensions of dashboard quality, system flexibility and information currency, have a positive effect the managerial decision environment. The model indicates support for the consequences of managerial performance and organizational performance resulting from higher levels of decision quality in the managerial decision environment. The model also reveals that when the dashboard measures are strategy aligned, lower levels of dashboard system flexibility are associated with improved managerial decision environment. Therefore, when organizations design their dashboard systems to support strategy alignment, managers should not be afforded high levels of system flexibility to maintain their attention on the key performance indicators selected to align with strategy. This result is a primary contribution to the strategy literature that reveals that strategy aligned dashboards are more effective in environments where the dashboard flexibility is lower. Additionally, study two also extends the strategy literature by examining strategy alignment at the lower levels of the organization, since prior research has concentrated on the higher level strategic outcomes. As dashboards become highly diffused and more managers utilize the technology, the likelihood that dashboard designers cannot provide dashboard content that fits the tasks performed by managers is higher. The third study investigates this fit between dashboard information content and task uncertainty to understand if the fit between the technology and task impacts the extent of dashboard utilization by managers based on the theory of task-technology fit (TTF). TTF predicts higher levels of utilization will increase user satisfaction and managerial performance. Data is collected from 391 managers that utilize dashboards in their weekly work life to analyze the relationships predicted in the theoretical model. PLS is utilized to analyze the theoretical model and indicates weak support of TTF impacting the extent of dashboard utilization. The model supports the hypotheses for the links between the extent of dashboard utilization and user satisfaction and managerial performance. Based on the weak findings from this theoretical model, a second model is developed and analyzed. The second model measures TTF through the mediation of task uncertainty between dashboard information content and the extent of dashboard utilization, while the first model measured TTF through interacting task uncertainty and dashboard information content. The results of the second model show strong support that TTF, as measured through mediation, increases the extent of dashboard utilization. This study contributes to the literature by empirically showing that more extensive levels of dashboard utilization are achieved through the antecedent of TTF, resulting in increased managerial satisfaction and managerial performance.

In this paper I present ANCOR Dashboard, a front end web framework that interfaces with ANCOR. ANCOR Dashboard aims to provide ANCORs users with an easy to use front end interface for accomplishing various use-cases against the ANCOR framework. ANCOR Dashboard was developed mainly in AngularJS, a lightweight JavaScript framework. This dashboard is able to accomplish everything that the ANCOR Command Line Interface, or ANCOR-CLI, is able to do. This framework also needed to provide some information about the state of the system through various data gathered from ANCOR in a human readable format. Not only should it be able to inform the user about the state of ANCOR but it needs to be able to perform operations against ANCOR just like the command line interface can do.This report documents the design and implementation of ANCOR Dashboard. It will detail the necessary background of the project, and overview of the framework, and discus- sion of implementation and component breakdown. I will also provide an evaluation of the dashboard and a discussion about future work with ANCOR Dashboard.

Abstract:
AWARE is a mobile instrumentation framework for Android devices that focuses on users, researchers and application developers. In this paper we introduce AWARE’s web services (AWARE-WS), a multipurpose dashboard for science. AWARE-WS allows researchers to manage and interact with longitudinal, largescale and distributed user studies that focus on human behavior. Additionally, developers can manage and share their own plugins or sensors for extending the AWARE framework. AWARE-WS was designed and implemented taking into account AWARE’s secure, private, scalable, and interoperable data exchange requirements and has been thoroughly evaluated for its performance, scalability and usability. We stress-tested AWARE-WS with an increasing amount of generated data streams (e.g., sensor data), from 1000 to 10 Million devices, to improve the overall system’s performance. Using pagination and on-demand data loading, we achieved a reasonable average loading time of 1,9 seconds

Abstract:
This diploma thesis deals with design principles of mobile reporting. In the introduction the difference between report and dashboard is described because these two concepts are usually falsely perceived. Then a compilation of a list of properties follows, which of them a well-designed dashboard should have and this is the main objective of this thesis. In its content the document describes, how to achieve certain properties, what to avoid in the layout and recommended features which can help to end users to simplify and streamline the work. These recommendations are also applied in practice by using some examples. The description is given, including workflow and available options of the selected tools. This thesis offers detailed instructions, how to form mobile dashboards, including comments and opinions provided by end users. I find this as the main benefits of this thesis.

Abstract:
The main task of this diploma paper was to evaluate the product "Microsoft Office Performance Server 2007" in terms of its usability for creating web dashboards. During the work, theoretical bases for the area of creating dashboards have been formed, suitable methodics for evaluating the product have been proposed and last but not least, some exemplary data have also been processed. The work can therefore be divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. In the beginning of the first part, the diploma paper introduces the most important facts from the areas of Business Intelligence a Corporate Performance Management. These facts are the most important starting points when creating dashboards. Following in this part is the dashboard technology itself. The analysis of current evaluating criteria for creating dashboards, and the creation of new criteria are the most important points of this diploma paper. The introduced criteria and their way of use have been designed concerning the various conditions and presumptions in organizations where the application of a dashboard is considered. The last chapter of the theoretical part then introduces the product "Microsoft Office Performance Point Server 2007". In the practical part of the paper, particular data is processed into a dashboard using the mentioned tool. The data used are data of a fictive firm which are used in the teaching subject Business Intelligence at the Economic University in Prague. The process of work with PPS 2007 is described rather in detail. This work can therefore be potentionally put to use also as a case study. In the conclusion, PPS 2007 is evaluated using the proposed criteria, whereas verbal commentary is added to each evaluation. For potential organizations which consider purchasing the product, conditions are added under which the purchase is recommendable.

Abstract:
The goal of this investigation has been to answer the questions “Which graphs should be used to display a special type of information?”, “What information does a company need to know that a server has gone down?” and “How should the layout of the developed program look to be called easy to understand and nice to use?”. The investigation was helped by the use of user-interviews and information that was collected during meetings. Part of the work was also the development of a prototype of a so called “dashboard” where functions where tested. These tests were then used to find out if the information was showed in a suitable manner. The information gained from these earlier tests has then been compiled into a result which shows that it is important to use y-over time graphs to show information over time. Fraction based information such as pro- cents are best showed with a filling graph, such as the speedometer graph. The second question was easily answered with a simple questionnaire. The result of this questionnaire showed that it was important for companies to know how much of the servers resources was used and how much data that was sent and received. Regarding the last question, the only notable result was the fact that the UI of the prototype was to light. This resulted in a color change for the UI to the darker spectrum.

Abstract:
Using the internet for watching videos or online shopping keeps growing, along with video advertisement to increase online sales. To know if the video actually increases the online sales, the owner of a video ad wants to do follow ups on how the video is doing, and get statistics. A different solution from the original video ads is Smart Video. It is an interactive video player with a clickable slideshow of products. This video can get even more types of statistics than a normal video, and today that statistic is not accessible for the Smart Video clients, without the help of someone from the Smart Video team that can create a report for them. The purpose of this thesis was to relieve the workload of the Smart Video team and to create a dashboard that shows all information that the clients find relevant about their videos. This paper is about the process of developing a design for a marketing dashboard, that follows the guidelines of information dashboard design by Stephen Few. The process included interviews, multiple designs, prototypes, and evaluations, before ending up with a prototype of a desktop solution that follows the aesthetics of Smart Video and can be realizable with the current technology.

Abstract:
Annually, road accidents cause more than 1.2 million deaths, 50 million injuries, and US$ 518 billion of economic cost globally. About 90% of the accidents occur due to human errors such as bad awareness, distraction, drowsiness, low training, fatigue etc. These human errors can be minimized by using advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) which actively monitors the driving environment and alerts a driver to the forthcoming danger, for example adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, parking assistance, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, driver drowsiness detection, and traffic sign recognition etc. Unfortunately, these systems are provided only with modern luxury cars because they are very expensive due to numerous sensors employed. Therefore, camera-based ADAS are being seen as an alternative because a camera has much lower cost, higher availability, can be used for multiple applications and ability to integrate with other systems. Aiming at developing a camera-based ADAS, we have performed an ethnographic study of drivers in order to find what information about the surroundings could be helpful for drivers to avoid accidents. Our study shows that information on speed, distance, relative position, direction, and size & type of the nearby vehicles & other objects would be useful for drivers, and sufficient for implementing most of the ADAS functions. After considering available technologies such as radar, sonar, lidar, GPS, and video-based analysis, we conclude that video-based analysis is the fittest technology that provides all the essential support required for implementing ADAS functions at very low cost. Finally, we have proposed a Smart-Dashboard system that puts technologies – such as camera, digital image processor, and thin display – into a smart system to offer all advanced driver assistance functions. A basic prototype, demonstrating three functions only, is implemented in order to show that a full-fledged camera-based ADAS can be implemented using MATLAB.

Abstract:
Developers have a tendency to deliver meaningless dashboards to users from different organizations. A dashboard is a visual display that presents the important information on one single screen, for users to make decisions. As it is with the help of dashboards that decisions are to be made, the design is as important as the data is right. Most of the time the developer only throws something up on a dashboard and visualize according to his own experience and feelings, which may cause users not to attempt to work with the dashboard. With a user-friendly dashboard, it becomes easier for the user to make decisions and also becomes more grateful.  2  The results of this study is that there are important areas that developers should focus on in order to be able to achieve a user-friendly dashboard. The study has only focused on user-friendly based on the design principles. Based on the focus areas that have been developed, points have also been established based on what all users themselves have said and share in common. The developed focus areas are the placement of information, colours and choice of graphs. The study´s results make a clear difference from what previous literature has said and what users have in common with the literature.

Abstract:
Big data is a term used to describe large amounts of data. The aim of the work has been to develop an efcient system that analyzes large quantities of data. Which in this case is the transport of wood between forest and industry. By man- aging this amount of data, the user can quickly receive information about the lo- cation of the timber and compare historical data regarding it. This report de- scribes the work of implementing a dashboard that compiles "Big data" in real time and in a comprehensible way. The project uses scrum as a project tool. This means an iterative development where you work towards smaller sub-goals. The report also includes evaluations conducted with a focus on usability and also a compilation of research within the subject of data visualization and BI. The evalu- ation indicated that by using the developed dashboard, it took a standard com- puter user an average of 3.4 seconds to fnd the requested information. Before, programming skills would be required and it would take much longer to obtain corresponding information.

Abstract:
With rapid growth in technical and social sector, the amount of data produced and retrieved has grown exponentially. Hence, there is a dire need for a management information system (MIS) to manage and structure such data. This study was initiated to learn about the problems and needs of the employees of a truck manufacturer organisation while working for long duration projects. The information about processes and tasks is available but in an unstructured manner through excel spreadsheets which makes it difficult for users to retrieve required information during crucial times. An information system in the form of a dashboard was designed and proposed to overcome the problems faced by users. This study focuses on evaluating the user experience of employees while retrieving desired information about the procedures using both dashboard and excel spreadsheets. To investigate the work structure and problems of employees, interviews were conducted. The results were analysed and a dashboard solution was proposed and developed with real time data. With employees coordination, few usability tests were conducted and the feedback was recorded for future work. According to the study results, the efficiency of employees can be increased and the decision making can be improved using MIS. With better retrieval techniques user experience was also enhanced. The interactive visualisations of dashboard attracted users and was used efficiently for providing tons of information about procedures to be followed.

Abstract:
Extensive solutions of Business Intelligence consist of wide range of projects. One of them is generating of reporting layer whose part is setting of dashboards. This diploma thesis deals with dashboards and tools serving to their formation. In the first part of the thesis there is explained the theory of dashboards in current company informatics. Consequently there is created a set of evaluative criteria helping with mutual comparison of the tool for the forming of dashboards, which is the primary aim of the thesis. In the last part of the thesis there is a presentation and evaluation of one selected tool (Dashboard Designer) according to the criteria stated in the thesis. During the evaluation of the tool it is possible to verify some of the criteria on the basis of practical experience. That is why the demonstrative implementation of Dashboard Designer over the test data is shown. Thus the second aim of the diploma thesis is completed. Aforementioned targets are achieved on account of pieces of knowledge about dashboards coming especially from the literature published by authorities in the line of business and from background research concerned with contemporary approach to the evaluation of tool for the forming of dashboards. In addition to formed criteria this diploma thesis can be instrumental to further discussion about dashboards and their role in current company informatics.

Full text
Abstract:

Veiling glare has always existed in cars, but during the last years it has been brought up as a big problem. One reason is that glossier materials are being used in car interior design. Another reason is that the customers who buy the cars are getting more quality conscious. They demand to get top quality for the high price that they pay for a car, and veiling glare problems could be regarded as “low quality”.

Veiling glare is when light hits the car interior and reflects into the windshield, causing mirror-like images in the windshield (ghost images). This can impair the driving experience in two ways. It can lower the contrast of the road scene and it may be a cluttering for the driver.

This work handles daytime veiling glare from dashboard reflectance. The purpose was to investigate the area and to see if Saab can avoid the problem with veiling glare by using virtual prototyping (see chapter 3.3.1). This has been done by examining if the light

simulation software Speos can be used to simulate and predict veiling glare, and thereby be used as a tool for better design.

Key words: Veiling glare, dashboard, windshield, Speos, virtual prototyping.

Abstract:
Workplaces way of communicating and sharing information has changed trough out the years, and digitalization has given new opportunities to how workplaces can communicate using technology. A popular tool used for presenting information is large digital screens. A company that uses a screen like this to present information to their employees is Xlent in Umeå. This thesis is about investigating how this screen can come to better use at the workplace, by creating a new system that combines office information, currently presented on the screen, with employees’ schedules that previously have been managed on a whiteboard. The new solution was implemented as a web application, allowing a user to access the application on any preferred platform. An administrator can therefore, during a meeting, directly change the content presented on the TV-screen from a cellphone or laptop. Due to the current global pandemic, Covid-19, could the new system not be tested within the workplace, instead, it was tested from an administrative point of view. Usability testing for the sought usage within the workplace is left as future work.

Smuts, Martin Bradley. "A framework for the design of business intelligence dashboard tools." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/12941.

Abstract:
Vast amounts of data are collected on a daily basis, making it difficult for humans to derive at valuable information to make effective decisions. In recent years, the field of Business Intelligence (BI) and Information Visualisation (IV) have become a key driver of an organisation’s success. BI tools supporting decision making need to be accessible to a larger audience on different levels of the organisation. The problem is that non-expert users, or novice users, of BI tools do not have the technical knowledge to conduct data analysis and often rely on expert users to assist. For this reason, BI vendors are shifting their focus to self-service BI, a relatively new term where novice users can analyse data without the traditional human mediator. Despite the proliferation of self-service BI tools, limited research is available on their usability and design considerations to assist novice users with decision making and BI analysis. The contribution of this study is a conceptual framework for designing, evaluating or selecting BI tools that support non-expert users to create dashboards (the BI Framework). A dashboard is a particular IV technique that enables users to view critical information at a glance. The main research problem addressed by this study is that non-expert users often have to utilise a number of software tools to conduct data analysis and to develop visualisations, such as BI dashboards. The research problem was further investigated by following a two-step approach. The first approach was to investigate existing problems by using an in-depth literature review in the fields of BI and IV. The second approach was to conduct a field study (Field Study 1) using a development environment consisting of a number of software components of which SAP Xcelsius was the main BI tool used to create a dashboard. The aim of the field study was to compare the identified problems and requirements with those found in literature. The results of the problem analysis revealed a number of problems in terms of BI software. One of the major problems is that BI tools do not adequately guide users through a logical process to conduct data analysis. In addition, the process becomes increasingly difficult when several BI tools are involved that need to be integrated. The results showed positive aspects when the data was mapped to a visualisation, which increased the users’ understanding of data they were analysing. The results were verified in a focus group discussion and were used to establish an initial set of problems and requirements, which were then synthesised with the problems and requirements identified from literature. Once the major problems were verified, a framework was established to guide the design of BI dashboard tools for novice users. The framework includes a set of design guidelines and usability evaluation criteria for BI tools. An extant systems analysis was conducted using BI tools to compare the advantages and disadvantages. The results revealed that a number of tools could be used by non-experts, however, their usability hinders users. All the participants used in all field studies and evaluations were Computer Science (CS) and Information Systems (IS) students. Participants were specially sourced from a higher education institution such as the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). A second field study (Field Study 2) was conducted with participants using another traditional BI tool identified from the extant systems analysis, PowerPivot. The objective of this field study was to verify the design guidelines and related features that served as a BI Scorecard that can be used to select BI tools. Another BI tool, Tableau, was used for the final evaluation. The final evaluation was conducted with a large participant sample consisting of IS students in their second and third year of study. The results for the two groups revealed a significant difference between participants’ education levels and the usability ratings of Tableau. Additionally, the results indicated a significant relationship between the participants’ experience level and the usability ratings of Tableau. The usability ratings of Tableau were mostly positive and the results revealed that participants found the tool easy to use, flexible and efficient. The proposed BI Framework can be used to assist organisations when evaluating BI tools for adoption. Furthermore, designers of BI tools can use the framework to improve the usability of these tools, reduce the workload for users when creating dashboards, and increase the effectiveness and efficiency of decision support.

Abstract:
Medical records are rapidly being digitized to electronic medical records. Although Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) improve administration, billing, and logistics, an open research problem remains as to how doctors can leverage EMRs to enhance patient care. This thesis describes a system that analyzes a patientâ s evolving EMR in context with available biomedical knowledge and the accumulated experience recorded in various text sources including the EMRs of other patients. The aim of the Clinician Decision Support (CDS) Dashboard is to provide interactive, automated, actionable EMR text-mining tools that help improve both the patient and clinical care staff experience. The CDS Dashboard, in a secure network, helps physicians find de-identified electronic medical records similar to their patient's medical record thereby aiding them in diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and outcomes. It is of particular value in cases involving complex disorders, and also allows physicians to explore relevant medical literature, recent research findings, clinical trials and medical cases. A pilot study done with medical students at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute (VTC) showed that 89% of them found the CDS Dashboard to be useful in aiding patient care for doctors and 81% of them found it useful for aiding medical students pedagogically. Additionally, over 81% of the medical students found the tool user friendly. The CDS Dashboard is constructed using a multidisciplinary approach including: computer science, medicine, biomedical research, and human-machine interfacing. Our multidisciplinary approach combined with the high usability scores obtained from VTC indicated the CDS Dashboard has a high potential value to clinicians and medical students.

The present investigation is proposed to operate in the touristic sector, since this one is daily bombarded by a considerable amount of data and information. Nowadays, the use of technology is more significant with the purpose to promote and sell the products/services available in the market. Along with technological evolution, the users/buyers can buy, more and more, with just one click, the touristic products they desire. However, there’s a wide range of applications about tourism which allow to understand the tastes and needs of the tourists, as well as their attitude toward it. Yet, neither entities nor touristic managers enjoy cleverly the data that was been given to them. These usually tend to hold themselves by the tourism in Portugal and in what way their entity is presented, eventually forgetting that data can and should be used to expand the market as well as it helps to understand/know potential markets. Thus, the main foundation of this investigation refers to the creation of an info-communicational platform which analyses, completely, the obtained data as well as provide relevant tools that can do this analysis, namely through an adequate infographic representation and strategies to communicate to stakeholders. For this purpose, it was applied in the context of this dissertation the methodology “investigation/action”, seen as a cyclic process in addition to, simultaneously, include these two strands which goes alternating between action and critical reflection being sustained by theoretical basis. The creation of the prototype of Smart Tourism platform resulted in a modern system that tries to answer to the chosen indicators in the Dashboard and to the infocommunicational problem, trying to create necessary bases so that entities can analyze in a way that is more intregated/systematized and rationally the tourism sector. In this way, it was developed and evaluated qualitatively a base visual infocommunicational prototype (visual dashboard) that beyond what was already mentioned, can provide management of products, customers, staff and partners, raising the value of this sector.

Visualization in process-oriented organizations is becoming increasingly more important for better decision making. This case study explores the design process of an IT company's dashboard software and the software requirements of its client. Based on our results and literature review we propose a control chart design module to incorporate in the dashboard that visualizes organizational variation in an interactive way. We found that user participation was considered very important by the developers but not implemented during early stages of development and that fictional clients were developed to when the project had no real clients. This was due to intermittently insufficient resources being put into the project, lack of clients and lead developers moving to other projects. We propose that developers make a preliminary study, market analysis, have an even flow of resources and not develop to fictional customers. Developers developing client specific software attributes also need to have a thorough understanding of the customer's needs before development starts in order to not create unnecessary software features.

Abstract:
This study is a software usability design case about information presentation in a software dashboard. The dashboard is supposed to present system information about an enterprise resource planning system. The study aims to evaluate if the intended users of the dashboard prefer a list-based or an object-based presentation of the information and why. It also investigates if the possibility to get familiar with the prototype affects the evaluation’s result. The study was performed using parallel prototypes and evaluation with users. The use of parallel prototypes is a rather unexplored area. Likewise, little research has been done in the area of how user experience changes over time. Two prototypes were created, presenting the same information in two different design solutions, one list-based, and one object-based. The prototypes were evaluated with ten presumptive users, with respect to usability. The evaluation consisted of two parts, one quantitative and one qualitative. Half of the respondents got a chance to get familiar with the list-based prototype, and half the object-based prototype, after which they evaluated both sequentially. The result of the evaluation showed that seven out of ten respondents preferred the list-based prototype. The two primary reasons were that they are more used to the list-based concept from their work, and that the list-based prototype presented all information about an application at once. In the object-based prototype the user had to make a request for each type of information, which opened up in a new pop-up window. The primary reason that three of the ten respondents preferred the object-based prototype was that it had a more modern look, and gave a cleaner impression since it only presented the information the respondent was interested in at each point in time. The result also implied that the possibility to get familiar with the prototype by testing it for a couple of days affected the result. Eight out of ten respondents preferred the prototype they got familiar to, and the only ones that liked or preferred the object-based prototype were those who had gotten familiar with it.   The results of the study support the results of the existing research done by Dow et al. (2010) on the use of parallel prototypes, i.e. creating several prototypes in parallel, and conform with the results of the research of Karapanos et al. (2009) on how user experience changes over time. Some other interesting information that emerged from the study was that all but one of the respondents thought that the prototype they got familiar with had an acceptable level of usability. The study also validated that all respondents are positive to use a dashboard in their work, and that the presented information was enough for a first version of the dashboard. It also validated that the different groups of users would use the dashboard differently, and therefore are in need of slightly different information.

Abstract:
While the idea of the ‘Smart City’ has attracted increasing attention from academia, industry, and government, this interest has largely had a technical and technological focus. This thesis explores the notion of the smart city in several different but related fashions. I first review and unpack the current research and literature on the smart city, as part of a Foucauldian emphasis on the notion of ‘discourse’. My thesis then charts empirically some of the contours of this current discourse through ethnographic interviews and a form of grounded analysis to ascertain and identify some of the major themes and ideas. I then contribute to the current discussion and debate regarding the smart city by introducing a novel Foucauldian theoretical approach to features of this discourse, as well as considering Foucauldian notions of ‘gaze’ as applied to the smart city; and examining the extent to which the smart city might be considered as a Foucauldian ‘heterotopia’. I conclude the thesis with design implications in terms of knowledge production, civic engagement and policy potentials. Ultimately this is an attempt to identify some of the important political and policy challenges facing the idea, the discourse, of a ‘smart city’ to optimise human computing interaction, computing supported collaborative work and design research input into the ‘smart city’ debate. In order to develop an empirical basis for my research, I conducted ethnographic interviews with both citizens from cities undergoing smart city transformation and experts who are either leading or previously involved in these smart city developments. The citizens were asked about their current experience with the cities they lived in, their understanding and expectations of a smart city and what they envisioned for their cities. The experts were asked questions regarding their prior experience with the “smart city”, their understandings of what it means for a city to be ‘smart’, what policy potentials they’ve recognised in the smart city, the implications smart cities have on democracy and finally the knowledge production, dissemination and sharing in the smart city. The thesis first follows a sociological, ‘grounded’ thematic analysis of these interviews. It analyses and offers a synthesis of the responses collected throughout the research with the current policies concerning various smart city proximity, thereby providing a critical assessment of the values underlying the smart city. I then contrast this with a Foucauldian theoretical approach to analyse the discursive formation of the smart city, conceptualising the smart city as a heterotopia and then develop Foucault’s notion of ‘gaze’ to outline the different elements involved in what might be termed the ‘smart city gaze’. In so doing I bring another critical approach to smart city discussion to demonstrate that the smart city concept is not a new novel approach to urban problems, it is a continuation previous attempt to deploy information communication technology (ICT) in cities with new add-ons such as data gathering, and internet of things features. In so doing I hope to highlight both the inherited issues facing such a technology deployment, such as digital inclusion and piracy ,and relatively newer issues that comes with the new features of the technology in general but of the ‘smart city’ in particular– concerns, for example, of the surveillance features embedded in the data gathering and internet of things approach that may both threaten privacy whilst providing for possibilities such as ‘designing out’ crime, or encouraging civic engagement. The thesis accordingly concludes by exploring the ‘implications for design’ and presents some of the policy possibilities for UK smart cities that are potentially useful for politicians, policy makers, planners, academics, and technology companies. I believe that these perspectives for policy development can be used to inform responsible development, spatially and socially inclusive technologies, and ultimately more resilient and liveable cities. The thesis is structured as follows: I begin by presenting the academic context and political status quo for this research, followed by an overview of the methods I used during the project, highlighting some of the challenges I encountered while applying these methods. This is followed by a discussion of the research results, as well as the implications of the results, and the limitations of the project. The thesis is concluded by outlining questions that were left unanswered for further research.

Abstract:
Rapid developments in the educational system significantly facilitate the popularisation of education, making education more accessible. The learning process should be systematically analyzed to assist teaching, however, traditional learning systems provide limited support for educators. The learning analytics dashboard is, therefore, becoming a popular tool to provide insights into the learning process by analyzing and interpreting the collected data with effective visualizations. With the purpose of improving pedagogical decision-making, it is of importance to provide a comprehensive overview and informative feedback for the learning process. This study aims to explore the affordances and challenges of designing a comprehensive learning analytics dashboard for educators to support personalized learning and adaptive teaching. A large amount of research on the learning analytics dashboard was reviewed as the theoretical foundation. The prototype of the dashboard was developed based on the obtained theories. To examine the prototype, a user study with user experience designers was conducted to evaluate the clarity of the visualization and the effectiveness of the dashboard. The results summarised from the thematic analysis indicated that the dashboard could serve as a potentially valuable tool with overall clear interaction to support educators, and the visualization was considered intuitive to understand the connection of multiple data points. Suggestions for designing a learning analytics dashboard are discussed in terms of visualization, consistency, conception, navigation, interaction, information via text, visual appearance, functionality, and privacy. To further improve the affordances of the dashboard, future research with educators is of importance to conduct.

Abstract:
Technological advances have led to an influx of affordable hardware that supports sensing, computation and communication. This hardware is increasingly deployed in public and private spaces, tracking and aggregating a wealth of real-time environmental data. Although these technologies are the focus of several research areas, there is a lack of research dealing with the problem of making these capabilities accessible to everyday users. This thesis represents a first step towards developing systems that will allow users to leverage the available infrastructure and create custom tailored solutions. It explores how this notion can be utilized in the context of energy monitoring to improve conventional approaches. The project adopted a user-centered design process to inform the development of a flexible system for real-time data stream composition and visualization. This system features an extensible architecture and defines a unified API for heterogeneous data streams. Rather than displaying the data in a predetermined fashion, it makes this information available as building blocks that can be combined and shared. It is based on the insight that individual users have diverse information needs and presentation preferences. Therefore, it allows users to compose rich information displays, incorporating personally relevant data from an extensive information ecosystem. The prototype was evaluated in an exploratory study to observe its natural use in a real-world setting, gathering empirical usage statistics and conducting semi-structured interviews. The results show that a high degree of customization does not warrant sustained usage. Other factors were identified, yielding recommendations for increasing the impact on energy consumption.

Abstract:
In the upcoming years, industrial enterprises are expected to undergo a major transformation, as the Internet of Things (IoT) reaches widespread adoption. A key enabler behind this transformation, known as Industry 4.0, is the 5th generation of cellular networks (5G). Through privately owned networks, enterprises will be able to utilize the 5G technology to tailor the network to meet their needs in terms of security, reliability, and quality of service. Although much of the technology is currently in place, few efforts have been dedicated to help enterprises understand and optimise the value that this new solution brings. One way of making 5G more accessible is through information visualization of its data. Dashboards are today the widely adopted tool for processing data in organisations. This study aimed at examining the affordances and challenges of information visualization of 5G network data in such a tool, in order to make 5G more accessible. A large number of commercial network management dashboards were reviewed in relation to research on effective dashboard design, and a prototype was developed and evaluated with seven user experience experts. Results from the expert review suggests information visualization clearly aided communication of the five visualized network parameters: throughput, latency, availability, coverage, and devices. However, to fully examine the usefulness of the tool, further research on the tool’s fit in an industry context needs to be conducted.

Abstract:

Global Combat Support System – Marine Corps (GCSS-MC) was created to combine both Logistics and Supply capabilities into one system. The existing systems of Asset Tracking Logistics and Supply System (Atlass) and PC Marine Corps Integrated Maintenance Management System (MIMMS) required external interfaces to merge data. This new system was established to streamline the way the Marine Corps allowed commanders to make logistic and supply decisions. Unfortunately, GCSS-MC was not implemented with any Logistics or Supply Analytics, which required users to manipulate MicroSOFt Office products such as Access and Excel to analyze data. The objective of this thesis was to design, develop, and test a proof-of-concept prototype utilizing Oracle WebCenter to create dashboard analytics that allow commanders at all levels to make informed near-real time decisions. This was achieved by using the following: a modern design approach; the Model-View-Controller; a state-of-the-art development pattern; Oracle Application Development Framework; and powerful development tools such as Oracle JDeveloper and Oracle WebCenter Portal Builder.

Abstract:

This project investigates the way that larger power structures and highly specific site architectures affect voices of contestation through a situated ethnographic study of the #BlackLivesMatter movement on Tumblr. Rather than a comprehensive study, this project looks at how protesters may utilize high media and social network literacy to strategically make their voices heard by seemingly isolated and uninvolved users. Rather than ignorant to the structures around them, the specifics of these choices or e-tactics demonstrate a degree of awareness by protesters of larger cultural forces that may limit or constrain their ability to be heard. Through this lens, this thesis compares the role of Tumblr and other social sites as arenas for democratic dialogue and the insertion of previously marginalized peoples and narratives. The use of blogs by #BlackLivesMatter protesters and other counter-hegemonic movements as a realm for civic journalism and “counter media-errorism” is also analyzed. Ultimately, this project shows a clear need for further ethnographic study on the particulars of Internet and information and communication technology structures and how activists pursue social change within these structures.

Abstract:
The software market sees the appearance of new companies and products every day. This growth translates into the competition, and the survival of companies is reduced to investment in their products. Universities are also interested in improving their product, education. This improvement can be achieved by investing in the learning experience of students. Usability and user experience play an important role and have been a competitive advantage worth investing. Consequently, new methods have emerged to improve the process of evaluating the usability of products. Despite this growth, there is no direct model for assessing the usability of a dashboard. This gap led to the investigation of this dissertation, a proposal for a new model, Dashboard Assessment Usability Model (DATUS), accompanied by an evaluation method, which can be applied to the evaluation of the usability of dashboards. Eight usability dimensions are included in DATUS, each corresponding to a specific usability facet that has been identified in an existing standard or model and decomposed into a total of 20 metrics. In this sense, to verify if the model created is feasible, and as a contribution to Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, a prototype dashboard was designed for the Fénix platform, to which the DATUS model was applied. To test the usability of the dashboards, a behavioural study was conducted with 30 Iscte students. After analysing the results, not only was the feasibility of the proposed model and method confirmed, but positive conclusions were also reached regarding the usability of the prototype.

Abstract:
DevOps stands for development and operations. DevOps is a culture that empowers both development and operations teams to reduce time to market, make incremental improvements in response to changing conditions, and create a more efficient development process. Software development and delivery is a very complex practice, and managing it is even harder. Any kind of system or process needs to gather data and metrics to understand how it is performing. Understandably, measuring is essential in creating valuable software. However, measuring software is not easy and has been a problem for several organizations. There is the notion of utilizing a dashboard to ease the way DevOps teams interact and respond to data collected from systems to aid stakholders measure and monitor. The Design Science Research (DSR) methodology was chosen to build an artefact – the DevOps dashboard - and evaluate its value to the DevOps community. Several versions of the artifact were developed as part of an improvement process, with each iteration validated through interviews. It was identified that the dashboards generally accessible in the DevOps community are extremely specialized and lack a broader perspective of the entire ecosystem to help stakeholders in decision-making. The contribution of this research is the developed dashboard that allows more significant monitoring of a DevOps system employing metric categories that follow visualization best practices to improve user experience and impact the user decision process positively.

Abstract:
The semiconductor manufacturing process is a complex process that can consist of hundreds if not thousands of steps. During this process an enormous amount of data is generated and collected by several different systems. Analyzing this data can be complicated and time consuming. But, in order to optimize the manufacturing process, it is important to be able to process data quickly and provide data consumers an easy, meaningful way to view the data. Data consumers at a management level need to view data differently than someone who works in the semiconductor fabrication plant (FAB) operating the manufacturing equipment or a maintenance technician who fixes and maintains the equipment. So, it is important to provide these different data views to the users in a logical, organized way. This paper will discuss what a dashboard is, an overview of the semiconductor manufacturing process, and one implementation of a dashboard for the semiconductor industry, the Semiconductor Manufacturing Dashboard (SMD). An explanation of the systems involved in collecting and loading the data, the database structures, and the web servers used for development and production will also be discussed.
