Abstract:
The National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) operates moored data buoys in waters around the United States, providing highly valuable environmental observations in real time from remote marine regions. Key among these observations are wind speed and direction, and, for that purpose, NDBC uses duplicate anemometers on each buoy for reasons of redundancy and data quality. A significant portion of the NDBC buoy array also measures the directional wave spectrum. Buoys so equipped, when also fitted with a fin on the mast, can produce wind speed and direction from the directional wave system output; however

Abstract This article describes a method of kernel regression that can be used to investigate the relationship between a directional explanatory variable and a real-valued response variable. Cross-validation and bootstrap methods for obtaining sensible bandwidths and standard error estimates are also described. The proposed method is applied to wildfire and meteorological data from Los Angeles County, California, with the goal of summarizing and quantifying the impact of wind direction on the total area burned in wildfires ignited on a particular day. The results confirm that winds blowing fro

Due to dispersion, light with different wavelengths, or colors, is refracted at different angles. Our purpose is to determine when is it possible to design a lens made of a single homogeneous material so that it refracts light superposition of two colors into a desired fixed final direction. Two problems are considered: one is when light emanates in a parallel beam and the other is when light emanates from a point source. For the first problem, and when the direction of the parallel beam is different from the final desired direction, we show that such a lens does not exist; otherwise we prove

In an azimuthally anisotropic medium, the principal directions of azimuthal anisotropy are the directions along which the quasi-P- and the quasi-S-waves propagate as pure P and S modes. Circular or Angular data occur in many fields of applied statistics. A common problem of interest in circular data is estimating a preferred direction and its corresponding distribution. This problem is complicated by the so-called wrap-around effect, which exists because there is no minimum or maximum on the circle. The usual statistics employed for linear data are inappropriate for directional data, as they do not account for the circular nature of directional data. Common choices for summarizing the preferred direction are the sample circular mean, and sample circular median. A newly propos

In radio interferometry, observed visibilities are intrinsically sampled at some interval in time and frequency. Modern interferometers are capable of producing data at very high time and frequency resolution; practical limits on storage and computation costs require that some form of data compression be imposed. The traditional form of compression is simple averaging of the visibilities over coarser time and frequency bins. This has an undesired side effect: the resulting averaged visibilities “decorrelate”, and do so differently depending on the baseline length and averaging interval. This t

Smooth pursuit is the movement that occurs when the eyes meticulously follow an object in motion. While smooth pursuit can be achieved with a stationary head, it generally relies on the head following the visual target as well. During smooth pursuit, a coordinating vestibular mechanism, shared by both the head and the eyes, is used. Therefore, smooth pursuit can reveal much about where a person is looking based on only the direction of the head.
