Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of first-time mothers with colic infants. The research design was qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual. Data were collected by means of in-depth, semistructured, phenomenological interviews and a descriptive analysis was done. The results show that the real experience of having a baby did not meet mothers’ expectations. Furthermore, colic babies were anxiety-provoking and mothers struggled with feelings of failure. Deze bijdrage brengt het wetenschappelijke debat over de cultuurkritiek in kaart. Historici blijken over het algemeen striktere omschrijvingen te hanteren dan cultuurwetenschappers, literatuurwetenschappers en sociologen. Hun invulling van het begrip vertoont overlap met wat de geschiedvorsers aanduiden als maatschappij- of tijdkritiek. De historiografie over de door historici nauwgezet gedefinieerde cultuurkritiek blijkt bovendien vooral inzicht te verschaffen in de teksten van een gezelschap van witte, geprivilegieerde, westerse mannen. Deze beperkingen zijn in de afgelopen jaren door andere wetenschappers bevraagd, omdat zij nieuwe, vaak door het werk van Foucault, Said en andere postkoloniale denkers geïnspireerde vormen van cultuurkritiek waarnemen. Zo zijn er nieuwe definities en benaderingen ontstaan, die verhelderen dat cultuurkritiek op uiteenlopende manieren en door verschillende individuen en groepen wordt beoefend.
