Abstract:
The optical chaos dynamics are investigated for obtaining the secure transmission of an information message. A detailed numerical analysis of an optical chaotic transmission system, based on the synchronization of two chaotic lasers is presented. At the transmitter, the chaotic waveform is superposed on the information message; at the receiver, the message is recovered by subtracting the synchronized chaotic wave from the received signal. The aim is the investigation of the system performance for various configurations. Original methods are also proposed for improving the performance. Finall

Abstract:
The thesis is concerned with detection, estimation techniques and a method of the adaptive adjustment of the equaliser, for use in a 4800bit/sec synchronous digital transmission system operating over a voice-band time-varying HF channel. Two main impairments are additive Gaussian noise and inter-symbol interference (ISI), which can be very severe at times. All techniques considered here are algorithms or processes that operate on sequences of sample values. Modern digital modems normally operate in this way, and the techniques described are of direct application to practical systems, and could

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of cell loss when transmitting video data over an ATM network. Cell loss causes sections of an image to be lost or discarded in the interconnecting nodes between the transmitting and receiving locations. The method used to combat this problem is to use a technique called Error Concealment, where the lost sections of an image are replaced with approximations derived from the information in the surrounding areas to the error. This technique does not require any additional encoding, as used by Error Correction. Conventional techniques conceal from within the pixe

This dissertation presents a type scheme called UTS. The goal of UTS is to support composition between autonomous systems and programs. Composition is defined to include procedure call and message passing; it also includes command invocation and the use of stored data. The design of UTS and the principles that guided that design are discussed. The UTS type system is intended as an easily-ported pidgin language. It includes the most common scalar types, such as integer, floating point, and string; the common type constructors such as record and array; and it supports a mechanism for reference t

We present a design for a remote database access facility, which uses a message system as its communication medium. Adopting a message-based design offers a number of advantages over more conventional connection-oriented architectures for those remote database applications where the interaction between user and DBMS involves a single query followed by a single result. By complying with the CCITT X.400 Recommendations on Message Handling Systems, the design allows for networkwide access to remote DBMSs that is independent of the nature of DBMSs being accessed, the systems on which they reside a

Abstract:
Priority schemes employing the inherent properties of carrier-sense multiple-access (CSMA) schemes are investigated and then applied to the integrated transmission of voice and data. A priority scheme composed of 1-persistent and non-persistent CSMA protocols is proposed. The throughput and delay characteristics of this protocol are evaluated by mathematical analysis and simulation, respectively. The approach of throughput analysis is further extended to another more general case, p-persistent CSMA with two persistency factors, the throughput performance of which had not been analyzed before.

In this work, an ultrashort optical pulse source, generated through gain-switching of a semiconductor distributed feedback (DFB) laser followed by nonlinear fibre compression scheme, is experimentally demonstrated. Incorporating this with a novel fibre loop mirror, known as the dispersion-imbalanced loop mirror (DILM), simultaneous pulse compression and pedestal suppression are achieved. This generates ultrashort pulses with 350fs full-width half maximum (FWHM) and high quality extinction ratio of 30dB (instrument limited). With such short pulses, timing jitter becomes critical in avoiding sig

The concept of 2D barcodes is of great relevance for use in wireless data transmission between handheld electronic devices. In a typical setup, any file on a cell phone for example can be transferred to a second cell phone through a series of images on the LCD which are then captured and decoded through the camera of the second cell phone. In this research, a new approach for data modulation in 2D barcodes is introduced, and its performance is evaluated in comparison to other standard methods of barcode modulation.
