Abstract:
The paper describes an evaluation methodology for ship’s Planned Maintenance System database based on the application of a newly created questionnaire and the analysis of the evaluation results received by the questionnaire. The evaluation results of several databases and the analysis of evaluation results are also shown in the paper. The main purpose of the paper is to provide a simple and useful tool for the evaluation of all ships’ Planned Maintenance System databases, which will enable users to examine the data in the database and discover the areas where the database and maintenance can and must be improved. The expected outcome of the described methodology for the evaluation of ship’s Planned Maintenance System database can be described as: - Evaluating ship’s Planned Maintenance System database- Performing ship’s Planned Maintenance System database diagnostics to indicate insufficiencies- Determining the area and mode for ship’s Planned Maintenance System database quality improvement and, consequently, overall improvement of the maintenance and reliability of ships’ systems,- Setting up a standard for the development and evaluation of computerized database for ship’s planned maintenance,- Determining problems which occur during database development and describing complexity of the development process.

Education plays a very important role in molding a person into a good individual by imparting knowledge in all aspects. Globalization has helped the students to go to different countries, attain knowledge and exposure on the culture of that country. Universities receive several hundreds of applications from all over the world to get admission for higher studies. By following the conventional method the faculty of the university and also the applicant will face lot of difficulties in communicating. In conventional method the acceptance or rejection would be generally intimated through post. The applicant will be in complete ignorance during the processing of application. They will be several scenarios where interaction between them is necessary to further process the application. This project is intended to overcome such problems and make the interaction between the staff and applicant smoother. The main objective of the project is to develop a website for Computing and Information Sciences department which manages the data regarding the prospective students as well as students currently enrolled. It can be accessed by prospective students (who wish to join the university), faculty and administrators. Applicant will be notified constantly through email and they can always check their application status online. The role of the administrators is to accept applications sent by prospective students and upload their details such as their GRE, TOEFL scores and their academic records into the database. Once these details are stored in the database, the students will be able to access their application status. Students are also given information about missing documents in the database. There will be a committee to decide the application status whether it will be rejected or accepted. Once the applicant is accepted, the applicant would be added to the current students list. All this process is made easy through this website.

Abstract:
Many clustering algorithms have been developed and improved over the years to cater for large scale data clustering. However, much of this work has been in developing numeric based algorithms that use efficient summarisations to scale to large data sets. There is a growing need for scalable categorical clustering algorithms as, although numeric based algorithms can be adapted to categorical data, they do not always produce good results. This thesis presents a categorical conceptual clustering algorithm that can scale to large data sets using appropriate data summarisations. Data mining is distinguished from machine learning by the use of larger data sets that are often stored in database management systems (DBMSs). Many clustering algorithms require data to be extracted from the DBMS and reformatted for input to the algorithm. This thesis presents an approach that integrates conceptual clustering with a DBMS. The presented approach makes the algorithm main memory independent and supports on-line data mining.

Abstract:
If a single operating system can support multitudes of different programming languages and data structures, a database system can support a variety of data models and data languages. In this thesis, a Kernel Database System (KDS) supporting classical data models and data languages (i.e., hierarchical, network, relational, and functional) is used to support a demonstration object oriented data model and data language. This thesis extends previous research by accommodating an object-oriented-data-model-and-language interface in the KDS. Consequently, the research shows that it is feasible to use the KDS to support modem data models and languages as well as classical ones. This thesis details the KDS design, Insert operation, and Display function. This thesis also details how to implement modifications to the Test-Interface so that the KDS can support the object-oriented database. This thesis proves complex data structures in an object-oriented data model can be realized using an attribute-based data model which is the kernel data model of the KDS. Second, it details how the KDS is designed showing why no changes needed to be made to the KDS to implement the object-oriented toy database. Third, it argues the advantages of using a KDS in the database-system design. The KDS design produces savings in costs from compatability, reduced training, expandability, and software reuse.
